Against All Odds: The Struggles of the Noyyau

The Fury promotions give +20/+30% :strength:, but also remove the same -20/-30% when defending (on any terrain), the outcome is that it's an attack-only bonus.

I'll have another look through the Promotions list to see if I can find something else that might fit.
At the moment I'm thinking of giving only Fury III, increasing base cost to 95:hammers:, and maybe reducing :strength: to 10.

I do want to give a free promotion because that's something that will stay even after the unit is upgraded, and I want it to be not easily available, to differentiate later units by their origin, to give them some different "history".

Also, in my opinion the Praetorian is overpowered, and should have been named Legionary since the beginning. I'm looking at the RAND Praetorian though, he gets a whopping 3 free promotions.

Edit: Most UUs in RAND get the possibility to coexist with the normal unit's direct upgrade, i.e. they can be upgraded to the next unit in the upgrade line.
The Heavy Swordsman upgrades to the Musketman, coexisting with the Arquebusier.
I figured that since the Vanguard coexists with the Heavy Sword, he could upgrade to the Arquebusier instead.
They all eventually become Musketmen anyway.

OOC:
Actually no, the first statement is incorrect. Civ is more complex then it seems, and that's the reason why most here hate the RNG god so much (I'll explain this one too, as I've seen your complaints about 80% or 75% odd lost battles)

The combat is actually much more complex then it seems, and here comes the %s influence:

Spoiler :
There are 4 types of modifiers in combat: Strength %, Situational %, First Strikes # and Withdrawal %

Strength % are applied to a unit prior to the combat, so if your unit is a BtS Knight with Combat I, then it has effectively 11:strength: instead of 10

knight.jpg
= 10:strength:

+

promotions0014.gif
= 10 + ( 10% of 10 ) = 10 + 1 = 11:strength:

Situational % are applied during battle, and they are always calculated on the defender. So Imagine I have a Knight with Combat I vs a Longbowman City Garrison II. CGII gives +45% City Defense, together with the Longbow's +25% City Defense, it has a total of +70% defending a city, which he currently is. So my Combat would be between a 11:strength: Knight vs 10.2:strength: Longbowman, yielding 51.89%, which is the combat turn's odds, that small white percentage displayed a little bit under the big green one, that nobody cares about, and that it's the reason most hate the RNG God. I'll talk about it later in this post.
Now imagine I change the Knight for a Maceman with City Raider I, which gives +20% City Attack. Normally you'd think that the Maceman would become 8 + (20% of 8), which is 9.6, vs the 10.2 Longbow, yielding 48.48% of combat turn's odds. That's incorrect. The correct would be the Longbowman get a -20% modifier because of the attacker's +20% modifier bonus. So the Longbowman instead of getting +70%, it'll get 70 - 20 = 50%. Now the combat is 8:strength: Maceman vs 9:strength: Longbowman, which yields 47.05%, not the same as the other way around.

First Strike # are a more complicated and deal with the Combat Turns which I'll explain here. Each combat is made of several combat turns. A dice is rolled in each combat turn to see who hits who. The one who is hit, takes damage from a formula based on the combat turn's odds, and the chance of someone hitting the other is the combat turn's odds themselves, which can be easily calculated as we did on the 2 previous topics. The Combat Odds that most here are used to are actually the proportional sum of every possibility of success in a combat as a whole. So e.g., you have a combat between your unit which by the damage formula may take down the enemy in 3 hits, and this enemy needs to hit you 5 times until you perish, the Combat Odds will account all possibilities that you win, so these

Turn 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Hit or Take hit hit hit
Hit or Take hit hit take hit
Hit or Take hit hit take take hit
Hit or Take hit hit take take take hit
Hit or Take hit hit take take take take hit

vs*

Turn 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Hit or Take take take take take take
Hit or Take take take take take hit take
Hit or Take take take take take hit hit take

*I'm considering this unordered, so each row in a different order is accounted on the percentage of that row

If you hold Shift while looking at the odds (maybe this is only in a BUG mod? I don't know), you can clearly see these odds, and each will leave your unit with a different ending health depending on the number of hits and takes.

So after all of this, First Strikes enter making your unit Immune to Damage in the first # combat turns. This means that if your unit hits, it spends one # of First Strike, and it hits the foe, and if your unit takes, it spends one # of First Strikes and it takes no damage from the take. Want to save health? First Strikes' are for that ;)

If both the attacker and defender have First Strikes, they cancel each other 1 to 1, so if the attacker has 3 and the defender has 2, the attacker actually has 1, and will spend it on the first combat turn. x-y first strikes seem to be decided before the combat takes place, and for each available number in the range, it has the same percentage of being chosen. E.g. 3-6 means 25% chances for each of 3, 4, 5, or 6 First Strikes prior to the combat.

Withdrawal % is pretty simple. Unless otherwise noted, when a combat turn would make your unit die (it took the last hit it could take and would die because of it), it rolls a % to see if it withdrawls from combat. The odds are the unit's total withdrawal modifier. In BtS it could only happen when attacking, I have no idea if RAND lets defender withdrawal, and if so, I also have no idea if it is done the same way as normal withdrawal. On C2C there are promotions that let your unit try to withdrawl before the fatal hit, which is a nice mechanic btw.

So taken all that huge explanation, -20% Terrain Defense doesn't necessarily cancel your Strength %, let's see a good combat between your Vanguard (defending) vs BtS unpromoted Knight.

Vanguard: 11, +20% Strength, -20% Terrain Modifier, +50% city walls, 0-1 First Strikes
Knight: 10, immune to First Strikes

How most would guess: Vanguard = 11 +20% -20% +50% = 16.5; Knight = 10
Combat Turn odds for the Knight: 38% (62% for the Vanguard)
Total Combat Odds: 3.98% for the Knight to win this combat, and 96.02% for the Vanguard to slay the attacking Knight.

Now how it really is: Vanguard = 11 + 20% = 13.2; Knight = 10
Total % in defender: 50% -20% = 30%; New defender value = 13.2 + 30% = 17.16
Combat Turn odds for the Knight: 37% (63% for the Vanguard)
Total Combat Odds: 3.47% for the Knight to win this combat, and 96.53% for the Vanguard to slay the attacking Knight

It's similar, but not equal. And in some situations the discrepancies can be even bigger.

If you may, bring the praetorian so we can compare another UU of this game.

*About the RNG God, check the example of the knight. Imagine that 96.53% is your odds in a combat you're attacking, so you checked it and felt confident. But 96.53% odds of victory mean only 63% odds to hit in a combat turn. In this situation the Knight needs you to fail this 63% 7 times in up to 10 combat turns so you're dead instead of him. Numerically, this actually means only 3.47% chances, but this isn't a single roll, but rather 7 to 10 rolls, each facing a 63% odds that your unit will hit the Knight. And that's the reason. By hiding several percentage rolls in one single roll, the game makes you feel confident, when actually it isn't so safe like it shows you. ;)

Damn, I had no idea.
And I've been playing this game for so long :o

At least now I know that my love for Combat promotions wasn't misplaced :D

Thanks for the detailed explanation!

Author's suggestion: Play this in the background.

The King's feast was a grandiose affair, the entire Palace converted for the day into a massive banquet hall, food and drinks covering endless tables, the Kingdom's best minstrels playing all day long and acrobats and dancers performing amazing choreographies.
At the feast, among the many Nobles and fair ladies, the King's attention was captivated when Lord Felix Friedrich von Caterpillar II introduced his sister, Monika von Caterpillar. The young lady did not seem overly intimidated by the King, answering his questions with unusual directness and... sarcasm? Curiosity grew into genuine interest, and the King invited the Lady von Caterpillar to return the following day, when the Palace would be less crowded and their surroundings not as loud or crowded.

The next day however, their time together was interrupted when a terrified courier was admitted, under heavy guard, to the presence of the King. Unable to stop shaking, the young man opened a box and, without uttering a single word, revealed its contents to his liege: the severed heads of the Noyyau ambassadors to Latvia.
As it became known in the following days, the Latvians had accepted both the Spanish and the Moroccans as their Vassals, under the promise to wage war upon the Noyyau.
Such was the beginning of Turn 300, by many hailed as a Turn that would surely be of historical significance.
The King would rather have had a boring, uneventful Turn to enjoy with Monika, but the Latvians had dared break a peace treaty and murder Noyyau ambassadors. The Noyyau wrath had to descend upon them.

Noyyau eyes followed warily the advancing invaders, but they were the eyes of civilian Workers, not of trained soldiers. Troops had been called from all corners of the Kingdom, but they would take some time to arrive.

In Spain, Lord Greek answered the King's call and regrouped his troops to aid Wark. Madrid and the Spanish could wait, they didn't have anywhere to run to. As if on cue, Zapotec's new garrison disabled a Spanish Galley trying to pass by.
Spoiler :

Wark's garrison advanced towards the looming Latvians, to demolish the old Latvian Fort before the invaders would be able to make use of it. Having to dislodge the Latvians from the forests would be problematic enough.

With perfect timing, new inventions allowed the producition of heavier armor and melee weapons. Lord Greek's troops were the first to test the new weapons, upon their arrival at Wark.

In the west, a pesky Malinese Galley was finally sunk, and fishing could resume. Ringhio's inhabitants stared at the traffic on the Noyyau Road, Kannushi traveling west to Pictish lands, and Noyyau troops hurrying east towards Wark.

The Latvians finally approached Wark. Before the main core of their army had stopped, Lord Greek began leading sorties into their ranks.

The Giacola Misfits unit, having already been created when I modified the Vanguard, seems to have kept the original stats. All other Vanguards will be 10:strength:, start with Fury III, and have an increased :hammers: cost.

The proper Battle of Wark began with a Noyyau mass archery volley, which unfortunately did little to dissuade the Latvians from attacking.

The ground trembled when the Latvian cavalry began moving, riders endlessly emerging from the forest and gathering in uncountable numbers to charge at Wark's fortifications. House Giacola's Misfits volunteered to meet the enemy as the first line of defense, hoping that their Matriarch would approve of their courage in service to the Kingdom.
They held the line, time and again, turning the tide of the battle and saving the city.

The Latvians were given no respite, no chance to rest. As soon as the city walls had been cleared and deemed secure, Lord Greek rallied all the reasonably healthy troops and led them against the enemy.

Despite the massacre of the Latvian invasion at the gates of Wark, the Spanish royal family abdicated and allowed Madrid, their only remaining city, to be absorbed by the Latvians. Once again, the Noyyau were baffled by the strange decisions made by foreigners.
Spoiler :
mMHdwe8.jpg

Scouts from the border reported that a large contingent of Latvian Longbowmen had not advanced into Noyyau territory, sending forward only a small detachment, probably on a scouting mission. It was possible that some survivors of the first invasion force had managed to reach their homeland and report their defeat. Maybe they were now reconsidering the wisdom of invading the Noyyau Kingdom.

Spoiler :

The King is happy to confirm that the immediate danger to Wark has passed, thanks to the courage of Lord Greek, House Giacola's Misfits, and all the other defenders of the city. And also thanks to the gold of the Royal Treasury, spent to purchase upgraded weapons and armor for the troops on such short notice.

Now an important choice must be made to determine our strategy: do we pursue the Latvians and conquer their lands for good, or do we once again secure our borders without advancing further, trying to obtain a new Peace Treaty in due time?

King John is of the strong opinion that such treachery (canceling a Peace Treaty and murdering our Ambassadors) cannot be allowed to go unpunished, and with all the troops still on the move towards Wark, a successful invasion of Latvia could be accomplished.

However, the King needs the collaboration of the Noble Houses in this matter, as the Royal Treasury is almost empty and taxes have already been increased, and an invasion would be an even higher expense, at least until the first Latvian city will fall.

Once again, my father and his brave men have fought well for us. We should crush the Latvians for their audacity and raze their city to the ground!

Kami Yata of House Spirictum will detach a Spiritual Guide to the borders to help coordinating the war efforts. We must crush the Latvians and absorb their lands into the Noyyau Kingdom. Once we secure the North we may fix our economy. If we must increase the taxes even more, I recommend spreading more garrison troops on the cities most likely to suffer from angry subjects.

OOC: If there is a healer unit, I would like that the Spiritual Guide be it. If not, I'll rp being together with Lord Greek giving him the counsel of the kami on the battlefield.
BTW, they seem to lack metals or any metal working tech, and as our Vanguard is still really powerful, I doubt they will be able to resist. We take them and the spanish alike.

The King would not be opposed to passing such a decree, however His Majesty is of the opinion that:
Section 3 should only be valid while the conquered city is under direct military administration, and any House Florentianus agent must be escorted by a military escort.
After normal civilian administration is established, House Florentianus agents will have the right to search for and seize illegal equipment and stores, but only with the permission of the local Lord or City Council.
Section 4 should only be valid after normal civilian administration has been established. It would not be sensible to fault foreigners for not following Noyyau legislation while not under Noyyau rule. Anyone trying to infringe on House Florentianus' monopoly after the establishment of Noyyau rule, however, should be punished as intended.

Of course, the approval of the other Noble Houses would expedit the proclamation of said decree.

There is a Medic I Axeman on the way. Alternatively, I could make an Explorer (or other unit of your choice) and give him Medic I, and/or send a Kannushi along with the military forces. Shinto must be spread to the conquered cities anyway.

Medic I is the only Medic promotion available at this moment. Woodsman III also gives some healing to units on the same tile, but we already have enough of those.

Yes, the Latvians lack metals, luckily for us, or their first invasion would have probably been much worse, and Robertia might have fallen.
For that same reason, I had made peace with the Picts (they had Axemen), but kept raiding the Iranians: the Iranians had no metals (or even Obsidian for Axemen).

For spreading the garrisons... we're spread thin as it is! Except for Wark right now, all cities have 2 or at most 3 garrison units, a mix of Archers and Longbows, some even without any promotion. There simply hasn't been the time to make enough garrison units, even though Fiamma and Tehran will soon start contributing (although they need 3 turns per Longbow, but they give enough xp to get CG3).
