here is my Vietnam map that i used for my Second Indochina War scenario.

cities are placed as well.

i cleared out all of the custom data (ie civs, units and all of the rules) and set it to the Conquests default data.

a few comments on the map:

as you can see, vietnam is an 'island'. i did this b/c i did not want to include the other nations of SE Asia in my scenario not did i want to include the land tiles.

the mekong river is navigable. control of the river cities is strategic of course.

the cities are set up so that a scenario or epic type game could be played with 2 civs; North and South Vietnam.

2 ways you could go about playing with this map:
play an epic type game and start in the industrial era or
add in your own custom data and gfx

i'd be happy to advise anyone on how to add in custom stuff if they'd want it ;)

either way, have fun!

It's good and detailed, but...doesn't it look kind of "fat"? What map projection are you using?
yeah, it is 'fat'. i did this to zoom in a little to include cities/towns/hamlets of every province of vietnam. for esthetic purposes, it's a little 'chunky' but for game play purposes it's excellent.

I think it might be a good idea if you included Laos, Cambodia, and maybe Thailand and Guam. The north made extensive use of Laos and Cambodia for Logistical support as well as base camps and POW camps. They also trained troops there. Thailand and Guam were important US bases of operation for tactical and strategic aircraft. As soon as I get a good look at your map I'll post any other suggestion that I think might improve this map. At first glance I like it.

As I said before, I think you need to include Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Guam.

Here is my reasoning:

Place all US resouses on Guam with sea link (Harbor to Harbor) with Da Nang, Cam Ranh, and Saigon. BTW, Cam Ranh Bay is the largest deepwater port in the pacific, built by the US. Also major port of entry for US troops.

Place all NVA resourses in the north linked to the south via trails running through Laos and Cambodia.

The topography in the area around Dak To is all wrong. This is the Central Highlands area ( Tri-border area where Laos, Cambodia and Viet Nam join ). This area is dominated by Moutains and valleys that run from west to east diminishing in hight to low foothills in the east. Heavy jungle close to the border. Dak To was a small vil east of the border with a SF camp closer to the border. It is also the name of the mountain that the 173 ABN fought a famous battle on which ended on thanksgiving day.

There is no railroad in south viet nam,I assume that the one you placed there reprsents Hwy 1. I can assure you that Hwy 1 was no super Hwy during the war. On the contrary, traverseing HWY 1 was always an adventure. The Hwy crossed many streams and rivers as it went north. There were a lot of bridges and each one had to be protected.

The railroad in north, should run from Hai Phong, thru Hanoi and on up thru the approx location of Ha Glang on your map. BTW, where do these names come from?

That said, all in all, this is a very good start.

I have some additional ideas if you are planning to make a scenario with this map or if anyone else is interested in working on a Viet Nam scenario please let me know. I spent two years there (1968 - 1970 ) and would be more than happy to work on a scenario of this type.

The Guardian,

thanks for the comments.

as a matter of fact, i'm making a vietnam scenario but not with this map. i'm using a larger Indochina map so as to include all of the regions and cities you spoke of.

check the link in my sig, "TCW MP/PBEM". i have a few screen shots of the map we're using. you may also want to check out the big-daddy TCW scenario, too. the Vietnam scenario will sort of 'piggy back' off of it for units, etc.

we'd also love to have suggestions; especially if you were there!

What? When I looked at it, I thought it was about Vietnam and Laos. :p
