The Rood and the Dragon - the Anglo-Saxon scenario

It doesn't when I try it. Of course, there is no Palace screen in any scenario, so there's no need to press it, but pressing it should have no effect. Try it with another scenario - I don't think it's caused by this one...

No problems like that with me...

I posted here once to say that I didn't get a date (it only says november) and neither did the victory conditions screen display properly. This has happened in other scenarios for C3C so I am now convinced it has something to do with the fact that I can't get the latest patch to work. So no problem with your specific scenario then.

I haven't played it for a couple of weeks due to other obligations, but I must say it is one of the best scenarios I know! :goodjob: Last time I played I was playing with Wessex on Emperor level and had already conquered Sussex. I had an early war with Dumnonia, they declared on me but I gained two cities. I had just reached the second age, and I am way behind on techs but have a huge army and the third largest territory overall. I declared war on Hwicce but they had an MPP with Essex who already have the unit that comes with the Stirrup, can't remember the name right now. So they galloped into my territory and that kind of discouraged me from playing on for the moment. But I'm sure I'll finish the game later on, I quite enjoyed playing it. I also liked it because of my interest in that particular historical period.

Just wanted to say what a great time I've had playing this scenario; if I didn't know better I'd swear this was one of the Firaxis conquests. I'm currently playing as Wessex on Regent, just switched to Christianity (the "I'm losing my religion" option on the Revolution menu is truly inspired! :goodjob: ) and have been trying to take on Dumnonia with mixed results. It's weird getting used to having no artillery support; I had to scale back my earlier war with Kent because casualties were a lot higher than I'm used to. I suppose it turned out for the best because Bertha is quite the hottie and it would have been a shame to wipe her off the face of the planet. :) Anyway, kudos again for a great mod, and I'm really looking forward to the Desert and the Mountain.

Glad you like it, White Knight! I could never bring myself to wipe out Kent either.

[Ciceronian] Yes, the "Nov" problem is to do with the version you have of Conquests. I always find that rather than returning to an old game it's invariably more fun just to start a new one... This time, make a beeline for the Stirrup!

Also, the new version of this will be out at some point, with some extra techs, buildings and units, though it may take a little while. This is partly because I'm trying to improve the AI, which takes lots of testing, and partly because I want to finish The Desert... first. Fortunately, the proposed changes are really just polishing, as by luck or good management The Rood... seems to play pretty well anyway...

Id just like to say again how impressed i am with this scenario!
No problems with loading times at all, and with so many vieing powers.. well its nail biting throughout.

I did love one game tho where i managed to get vikings loving me, and quite happy to pay ME gold to go to war with the Irish! oh joy!

Would it take much work it open up some of the other civs as playable and post it up on the first page?
The picts maybe if it wouldn'd leave the human player at too much of an advantage, or some other civ,..or all?

It looks like a good scenario and I love this era,.. but I'd like to be able to kick ango/saxon butt too. :king:

Edit: I'm downloading it now for playing anyway, I'm just wondering. :)

Gael! He *is* still around after all!

The idea of making some of the other civs playable has been suggested before, but I decided not to do this. There are two main reasons. First, the tech tree is specifically Anglo-Saxon. I could do a "mirror" tech tree for one or some of the other civ groupings, though it would be a big job. But the second reason is more important, really, which is that it would unbalance the game. I wanted to create a challenge specifically for the Anglo-Saxons: see off the cultural challenge of the Irish, cope with the greater power of the Romano-British, ward off the Vikings. It wouldn't be possible to do that if the other civs were playable: for example, the Romano-British would all have to be much weaker. It's a shame, of course, but I think one of the strengths of this scenario is that it's quite nicely balanced as a game for the Anglo-Saxon civs, so there's not much wriggle room for such tweaking.

Of course, there's nothing stopping you from making other civs playable in the Editor if you like. I reckon a human player with the Picts could really cause some problems...

Hope you like it, anyway, especially after your work on similar things in the past... Let us know!

Amazing scenario, man. I just won (VP) as the East Anglians on Regent just as the Vikings were starting to attack everything. I have a question (for anyone to answer) related to something that Alcamer said a couple of pages ago.

I also saw the Irish approach and PASS 5000 CP fairly early in the game (around turn 75-80 or so), and presumably the Vikings were keeping me alive. But when I went to the victory page and clicked on Culture points, the Irish and the Vikings only had 1200 CPs or so. My culture was listed at around 1000 (on the graph page, on the initial one it was somewhere around 5-6000). Why would the initial victory page be different from the graph one? Was I not actually in danger of being passed (I was biting my nails every turn, heheh), even if Vikings somehow died off?

Excellent scenario. Very well made with nice attention to detail. I never once felt frustrated or lost, all the info was there and everything runs smoothly.
No need for patches (I don't even bother with unfinished/half finished scenarios that get released bit by bit ).

If i have any criticisms of it, (not criticism, more wishs), it would be to expand the scenario playablity by splitting the Irish kingdoms in the same why as the anglo/saxons, although it is an anglo-saxon based scenario and I may be a little bias..so I'll shut up. ;) (I'd love to see a part 2/expansion, but your probably sick of looking at it by now. :) )

Highly recommended to anyone who wants a good scenerio on this period.

9/10.

I would even say 10/10, the scenario is perfect in every aspect. As gael said, no need for patches, I could only suggest an expansion pack, if you feel like changing it a bit, Plotinus.
I found supporting my military hard, as my commerce was very limited. This was due to my reluctance to build slave markets, as I would not be able to cope with the unhappiness. Wessex has access to only one luxury, and even by expanding, it is hard to get more as there isn't so much in the vicinity. But that only makes up for the fact that Wessex is quite strong besides that.

It's very pleasing to get such feedback. Thank you!

[Balam] Personally I'm always wary of the numbers that appear on the right of the screen on the graph screen. They never seem to match what appears on the initial Victory Condition screen, which I think is accurate. It's all very confusing...

[gael] Of course, I had to gloss the Irish and make them a single civ in order to make them a cultural threat. I liked that part of the game, and in any case it would have really made things complicated... However, a scenario set in Dark Ages Ireland, with much more detail and warring factions, could be fabulous. I don't know if I'm the one to attempt it, though!

Thanks Plotinus. BTW, I also agree that its a 10/10. No need for patches as far as I can tell. At all. In fact, its so detailed I actually found myself reading all of the descriptions of everything for fun (of course, this was after I finished my first game) :)

This scenario deserved to be bumped a little ;)

Quite a nice mod, very well done, no bugs, and extreme fun :goodjob:

Wow, I just tried this scenario out this weekend. Its amazing, much higher quality than the official conquests scenarios. I'm playing a game as Wessex and think I'm doing fairly well, about halfway through the second age.

Its really ironic that this thread stays on the second page, because there are no bugs to report. This one truly deserves to be in the "completed" scenario forum.

Huh?
It is in the completed scenario forum...
