New unit: Roman Pikeman (22nd May 2005)

hmmm, I still need to get on that whole picture (I was expecting to do it whilst board in class one day, but it never came about; that is the oppertunity &insperation to draw such a unit, not the boredom ;))

Very cool :D And a wonderful design on that shield.

That looks awesome! Like others have said, i love the shield! Great work! :D

Great :) - we cannot have enough unit-makers :)

Good looking pike(?)man. Maybe it's just me, but I thought that pike is something you wield with two hands (did medieval pikemen have shields? I dunno?).
Comments :)
- shield looks great, altough the round shape seems a bit too ancient.
- the body of the unit would look a bit more interesting, if there was added something else (belt, scarf) not in civ-colour. Now it looks a bit dull, but it doesn't bother much :)
- as someone else stated, the victory (in firaxis-units atleast) tend to start from fortified position, and end on default position. This is not a biggie though.
- the tip of the pike is out of the frame in some frames in attack animation, but it's not a biggie either.

Overall, good job there, Zulu

as a side note, a good name for this unit would "Lanciarius", or "Lanciarii" for th eplural form

You are correct. In my mod, this unit is the early medieval spearman upgrade. It actually comes before the real pikes, but I call them Pike Block. Pikeman in this case is just to differentiate from spearman. If anyone has any alternate generic name (rather than Xen's latin name, which i do like, but a generic name would also help me out for other units) I'd be happy to call it that.

Well, I picked a round shield for 2 reasons. Firstly, because it was different from the rectangular one. Secondly, I thought that the Romans would have picked up the idea of a round shield after facing the Saxon Shield Wall (which used round shields). As ever, if anyone has any suggestions for different shield shapes, I'd be happy to consider it. But rather than just say a shape (e.g. kite) it'd be great if whoever's doing the suggesting could historically back it up as well.

I did think about this, but since at that scale and with that large shield, I didn't think that a belt or scarf would be all that noticeable. I suppose I could give it a try.

The funny thing is, this unit in civ style could be a fine medieval Infantry for the Byzantines (they looked similar). Could you do one variation without plate (just cloth) and a plain red shield? This would make a wonderful saxon fyrdsman (ca. 1000 AD).

A great unit! I did my senior thesis on the various shield emblems portrayed in the Notitia Dignitatum (a list of all the units in the Roman army in the late 4th century AD). The Romans did indeed use round/oval shields in the late Empire. This is a very good unit. It would also be a good unit for the Byzantines (who are really just late Romans anyway).

I'll certainly be using the unit as a Late Roman Infantry Unit in Anno Domini. Great looking unit, Zulu9812!!

Please do it eventually Xen...I want to see your art..

done; heres my take of what a Roman soldire from the era that woudl technologically equivilent to the era between the U.S Civil War, and the British Zulu wars woudl look like; I say that, as it is U.S SOldires, and Zulu War Scottish Highlanders, from which I drew most of the insperation for this guy, whom I suppose represents an officer in the Roman army

here the orgional one:

heres one with the buttons over laid, to give an idea of what it might look like in "Cuirassier armor"

the greaves are essentially decoration; since was on officer I was depicting (hence the sword, and the pistol) I decided i might as well give him the traditional Roman symbol of being an officer; two greaves for leg protection (which is also why they are decorated)

the sword is a take on the Roman spatha, which Rome adopted in the third century, and i doubt would actually stop using afterwards, had it survived; its got a curved tip, because I was influnced by the Union/Confederate swords thier officers held, which were cavalry sabres; over all, the soldire is rather conventional, and realistic

Wow...you aren't bad Xen..not at all. Actually it doesn't look that different to something Kal-el would draw.

This entire "What if Rome survived" stuff reminds me of an old commerical I once saw a few years ago, in which it had a bunch of news journalists on a bridge taking pictures of their leader, a modern-day Roman Emperior(with traditional dress too). The bridge looked like the Brooklynn bridge, and the Emperior was saying: "The Empire is strong, stronger than it has ever been", amidst camera flashes from the journalists.

I remember that commercial as well; it was a "State of the Empire address" and the statue, a take of the statue of Liberity, was a statue of a Roman emperor as well ;)

Funky! It looks totally different from the one I did. I'll scan it in in the next day or two and then people can choose...

cant wait to see it :D

What on earth was that an ad for? The mind boggles...

[EDIT] I've put my sketch in the main thread for this unit idea. You'll notice that I was thinking of a slightly earlier era than Xen, so perhaps they could *both* be made - oh, what a thought...
