What does referrals mean?

I have noticed this when I had a look at someone's profile. I noticed in the Forum info section of the user profile, under the user's status, there was a bit about referrals. What does that mean? I have attached my profile.

I have seen this before. I beleve during the registration process, if the person knows you and you told him about this site. He or she just simply enter the poster's name and the referral counter increaces.

I only enabled it last night...

Here is what it does:

User Referrer
If you enable the User Referrer system, then a user who visits your forum through a link that contains 'referrerid=XXX' will give referral credit to the owner of the referrerid when they register (where XXX is the userid of the referring user).

So for me the link I would use is http://forums.civfanatics.com/index.php?referrerid=1
