ITNES I - Interesting Times

Am working on it.

Awards to come later. For now...

---

The last two decades of the 7th Century BC were already those of not much interesting things happening, but several wars still ended. Great War ended; the Byzantine Empire rose from the Trojans and Thracians being united under the rule of Eram, while Lucans took control of old Trojan land in Anatolia, albeit the naval war with the Cypriots was to end only much later. Parhae resisted bravely, but was crushed by Lucans and Mohenjo-darans; the former took Mesopatamia, the latter put on the throne of Parhae a vassal dynasty of Cyrusids. The Magadhan warlords were mostly subdued by the Kalingans, though Kuru-Pancala grabbed a small slice of land in the west as well, creating ground for future conflict.

But what was much more important then this was the Transpoenic War in the Western Mediterranean.

Carthage, thanks to its riches, was capable to raise a great new army and to prevent the training levels from sinking too low; at the same time, Kartyrians received some assistance from nearby and semi-incorporated Ligurian tribes, as well as managed to arm the entire population of Kartyr itself, even though this "city army" was more of a disorganized mob. Portugal, meanwhile, raised a great fleet manned by sailors who knew basically nothing about sailing (Training sunk to "None", so...).

Portugal? What Portugal? What is it doing here? Well, it basically conquered the Carthaginian colony in Iberia using the Carthaginian distraction, but the attempt to land an army near Carthage failed pathetically due to lack of training; the storms simply dispersed the "Portuguese Armade" (barely sent into the sea), forcing Portugal to abandon its plans of world conquest... for now.

Meanwhile, Carthaginians, completely ignorant of the horrible fate from which their garrison-less homeland was saved, fought on near Kartyr. They received large reinforcements, and started heavily pillaging the countryside, which didn't win them any friends. No assault on Kartyr came, but the Kartyrians were prepared for that. They went on the offensive themselves. Albeit the "city army" was, as said before, a mob, the rest of the Kartyrian force was much better trained then the Carthaginian one. Also, Carthaginians were quite spread-out, so the Kartyrians, attacking succesfully from two sides, managed to crush the Carthaginian forces to the north from Kartyr easily. But not all was well - using this distraction, two other Carthaginian armies nearly took Kartyr in a great assault. But, their separation ultimately allowed both armies to be surrounded and held at bay; eventually, it had to be evacuated by sea, as taking Kartyr proved unfeasable... for now. The rag-tag Kartyrian raft fleet which tried to pursue succesfully destroyed a few ships with incendiary arrows, but mostly proved ineffectual and suffered large casualties to storms and Carthaginians alike.

But anyway, Carthage lost the Transpoenic War, even if not as decisively as some hoped; but what followed were the military and civilian reforms by Hannibal II in the end of the century, what ultimately would allow Cartahge, two centuries and thirty decades later, to start a new great period of expansion...

While I work on the awards, here's something to debate about:

Rule Changes:

Okay, some ideas for rule changes:
- Addition of a few levels here and there. Mostly to slow you people down.
- Change from hundreds to thousands (battalions?), to correspond the historical growth of army size towards this period.
- Creation of Leadership stats (like this: Leadership (Military/Civilian): x/y). I was thinking of this for a lot of time, and recently decided that perhaps this is a reasonable choice. Indeed, creation of two Leadership misc stats (for convenience wrapped up into one stat with two sub-stats) will, if anything else, help me decide a lot of problems more easily. In both cases, good leadership does NOT mean that you get a horde of Napoleons/ministry staff filled with Stolypins. It simply means that your military/civilian leaders are competent. Competent military leaders are reasonably-careful and reasonably-opportunistic, depending on situation, and if given good orders can win great victories; incompetent military leaders will either throw your entire army into suicide attacks, either sit around at the same spot for 20 years and will probably fail horribly in carrying out your plans. Competent civilian leaders will succesfully carry out government programs and will honestly work against corruption, and will make sure that generally life isn't too bad; incompetent civilian leaders will mishandle all of your programs, steal government funds and undermine the population's fate in government.
- Oh, and I think we should now switch to 15-year turns.

P.S. Herr Verructe (?) Pandaren, are you going to play Clusian League? Or will you take something else?

One Last story before i leave in about 2 hours

***

By now Eram was old and gray, he had lived a long life and now wished it to finally rest. His men were around him at the docks of the western shores of Thrace. No one spoke. Before Eram was tall ship. He planned to sail away to death and leave this world in peace. Ten thousand guards stood in respect to the greatest warrior king ever seen. From now on the Trojan Ten Thousand would be the most elite force in the Thracian army to honour the soldiers of Eram.

The sun set in the east as in Eram's heart as he remembered the dead of the great wars. He remembered the great unification and the survival of his people. With these thoughts he stepped into his boat. His grey beard and weathered skin became very apparent as the men watched him open the sails. And yet, with all his age he was still Eram of Troy, the lion, the great war hero who slew a thousand barbarians. That is forever how he shall remain, gods willing. As the ship moved off into the waves, the army shouted the prophesy of Eram, laid down by Thracian prophets...

Hail, great man. Sail to the heavens, sail to the winds. There flies Eram, King of Kings. Protect your brothers. 'Till he returns. For he will, friends, he will

- Addition of a few levels here and there. Mostly to slow you people down.

This is not really necessary, in my opinion.

- Change from hundreds to thousands (battalions?), to correspond the historical growth of army size towards this period.

This has my support.

- Creation of Leadership stats

This sounds like a great idea, supported.

- Oh, and I think we should now switch to 15-year turns.

I'd prefer 10 year turns, but i still support this.

I had a LOT of ships how could ALL of them jsut be blown away??? besudes between Iberia and Morroco not much sea stands :-\ not nice!

This is not really necessary, in my opinion.

But otherwise, you people just blitzkrieg to Elite+1 Training within four turns.
I'd prefer 10 year turns, but i still support this.

One day it will be 10-year. Not yet.
I had a LOT of ships how could ALL of them jsut be blown away??? besudes between Iberia and Morroco not much sea stands :-\ not nice!

a) Your sailors barely knew how to, well, sail. How do you expect them to fare in a sea that isn't known for its stormlessness? A better-trained fleet would probably not have suffered much casualties. That, and far from all of your fleet was actually DESTROYED; a lot of ships damaged, but mostly they were simply dispersed (if with heavy damage), and made it home.

b) If you had ordered to sail to MOROCCO... But you ordered to sail to Carthage, if I recall it correctly.

Awards:

Player Awards:

Winner: Capulet - despite a lot of challenges, the Empire of Luca survived and rose to further greatness.
Best Player: alex994 - starting with the weakest of the three northern powers, through efficient military reforms and quick action he managed to unify northern China.
Most Persistant Player: tossi - even after the destruction of Phoenicea, his people fled west and survived, plotting for revenge... one day.
Most Innovative Player: BananaLee - a lot of innovative decisions, as well as a generally... original nation.
Best Unsung Leader: Dachspmg - albeit most of Roman wars were, when compared to events elsewhere, rather "periphereal", Rome did rise to be a significant regional power.
Most Agressive Player: stalin006 - by a slight margin Sparta started more wars then Luca did.
Least Agressive Player: BananaLee - its a miracle as far as I know, but Hong Kong, despite BananaLee sending in orders for most of the updates, didn't fight ANY wars. Yet.
Best Orders: BananaLee - both innovative and understandable, while detailed enough but not excessively. Jolly good!
Best "New" (i.e. who came after NES2 III) Player: Dachspmg - quite a good player despite the "newness", not to mention a good polar bear storywriter.
Best Storywriter: Communisto - very epic and interesting stories, those about Eram's journeys.

Nation Awards:

Greatest Power: Aramid Luca - exhausted as it is by the war, it did come out victorious and is now virtually-unthreatened.
Greatest American (probably to-be-renamed) Power: Olmecia - not much of a competition, eh?
Greatest European Power: Portugal - despite its... maritime shortcomings, Portugal is, for now, the strongest European power, albeit competition is appearing.
Greatest African Power: Egypt - albeit Carthage, as soon as it recovers, might just top that.
Greatest Middle Eastern Power: Aramid Luca - no real competition, I'd say.
Greatest Indian Power: Mohenjo-daro - it may be somewhat overstretched, but for now at least it is the strongest power in India.
Greatest Far Eastern Power: all things considered, Hong Kong - albeit militarily-weaker then its northern neighbour, its prosperity more then compensates that.
Biggest Rise (i.e. starting out with the least and ending with the most): Sparta - albeit it is now at the brink of complete collapse...
Most Influential Nation: Aramid Luca - well, it did influent pretty much everything in Middle East. Quite good for this time.
Funniest Nation: Kartyria - mostly thanks to tossi's stories.
Most Surprising: Mohenjo-daro - didn't expect it to expand as much, really.
Evilest Empire: Kartyria - very ruthless revenge.
Longest Name: Empire of Wu, Qin and Yan - albeit it was immediately renamed to "Han"
Most Screwed-up Nation (that still exists): Macedonnian Federation - no comment needed...
Strongest Army: Aramid Luca - Elite+1 Scythian horde...
Strongest Navy: Cypriot Rebels - for all their poor training, their Longboat Armade is very formidable.
Strongest Air Force: Hong Kong - I'm sure one of the Hong Kees can fly or something, very smart people they are.
Largest Nation: Mohenjo-daro.
Smallest Nation: Cypriot Rebels, tied with Zapotecia
Strongest Economy: Hong Kong.
Most Technologically Advanced: Sparta, with Hong Kong catching up very very very fast.
Most Patriotic: Han China.
Most Original Nation: Aramid Luca.

Favorite Moment:

Largely for the others to fill, but my favorite moment was the Great War. Trully that war deserved its title!

Strongest Air Force? Wow.
I'm so honoured.. :D

My target for this NES is to have the Strongest Air Force until real powered aircraft appear.. :p

Here's to more fun ITs!

Now alex killed me, do I get an award for most times killed? Ur and Yan. I'm rejoining as the most isolated nation possible, so I don't get killed.

Well if this was IT... I would see I failed by sea and had a chance to come from Morroco...

Darn... Oh well, must play better next time... Maybe I shouldn't ask for a huge NPC to invade me, that way I can do something useful... :p

Writing BT orders as we speak.

hmm... i got an award that actually means something... i'll just take a leaf out of lee's book then :D

bannanalee/hong kong got the same amount of awards as capulet/aramid luca congrats to you and everyone else who got an award.

Yeah I was pretty screwed up for the whole time, every single turn in war.

Just some random babbleing ;) :

...Carthage was capable to raise a great new army and to prevent the training levels from sinking too low...
I thought no influence from outside!? How would Carthage be able to raise an army in Liguria itself?

...to arm the entire population of Kartyr itself...
Hey, I did not know that my people do love me so much! I just wanted volunteers! And if this isn't patriotic, what is? I claim the patriotism award from Hong kong :)!

My
rag-tag Kartyrian raft fleet
was not supposed to purse the enemy ships. It should make them immobile while they were at the coast so that they could be captured.

- Addition of a few levels here and there. Mostly to slow you people down.

Not necessary IMO.

- Change from hundreds to thousands (battalions?), to correspond the historical growth of army size towards this period.

I agree!

- Creation of Leadership stats
how would this be raised? With stories or with economy? I suggest with stories.
- Oh, and I think we should now switch to 15-year turns.

Nah, 10 is easier to count.

Wow, i got the awards for the smallest nation (not a suprise), but with the strongest navy. (This is what i did not expect) :)

Minoa might be gone but i will still, expect Luca to fall some day, those nomad tribes might turn to genocide their original Lucan brothers, who knows. ;)

"Look back over the past, with its changing empires that rose and fell, and you can foresee the future, too." - Marcus Aurelius

I don't expect Luca to last forever; everything that has a beginning, has an end.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun this IT, and I can't wait for the next one! :)

heh, more important than the Most Suprising Nation award...I made NK's quote of the month :p

You mean from Han China ;) who unified northern china :D

Oui, similar to the award I gave to erez for NES2 II.

Hint: you can also start a space-program by launching fireworks to the moon. Or trying to, anyway.
Here's to more fun ITs!

Toast supported. ;)
Now alex killed me, do I get an award for most times killed? Ur and Yan. I'm rejoining as the most isolated nation possible, so I don't get killed.

Okay... and as for the most isolated nation, I don't see any place where there isn't/won't be someone ready to kill you at the first opportunity.
Darn... Oh well, must play better next time... Maybe I shouldn't ask for a huge NPC to invade me, that way I can do something useful...
Or maybe (and that technically goes to everybody as well) you can try to send in orders in a timeframe that is NOT the last ten hours? Sorry if I'm rubbing in anything, but honestly enough I somehow fail to see how I often only receive orders in the last day. Had I received at least some of them earlier it would have been quite easier for me, especially as there's always at least four days to send in orders...

That said, not asking a big NPC to attack you might help as well. :p
Minoa might be gone but i will still, expect Luca to fall some day, those nomad tribes might turn to genocide their original Lucan brothers, who knows.

Oh, Luca WILL have some problems to deal with next IT, I promise. ;)
I thought no influence from outside!? How would Carthage be able to raise an army in Liguria itself?

Huh? Carthage was allowed to raise army in Carthage to reinforce their troops in Liguria. Carthage is hardly "outside" of the conflict.
Hey, I did not know that my people do love me so much! I just wanted volunteers! And if this isn't patriotic, what is? I claim the patriotism award from Hong kong !

Well, lets put it this way, the Carthaginian army was rather scary and killed people in the countryside in a gruesome fashion. So, your city's people had lots of "motivation"... And your nation is second most patriotic, for the refference. Which causes one to shudder at what the Hong Kee people would have done if invaded...

My rag-tag Kartyrian raft fleet was not supposed to purse the enemy ships. It should make them immobile while they were at the coast so that they could be captured.

It tried to immobilize it just as it begun to flee, and got somewhat excited at the sight of the fleeing burning Carthaginian ships.
Not necessary IMO.

Can't agree. I already explained - you people keep bumping stats so fast despite all the nasty stuff I put in to counter-balance it that I think a few more levels should be added.
how would this be raised? With stories or with economy? I suggest with stories.

Why? IMHO it should be, like all other stats, raise-able in both ways. Its called "cadre preparation" here, the education of either officers, either civil officials, that is separate from both the mainstream education and the military training.
Nah, 10 is easier to count.
Either go with ten or five or one. Not fifteen. *shudders*

Well, alright, ten. It IS easier to count.
I don't expect Luca to last forever; everything that has a beginning, has an end.

May its end be most spectacular!

I shall wait till the BT update to see if there are any other nations which peak my interest.

Well, hopefully...

Where's Warman? Anybody saw him on the forum recently?
