Memory Leak?

Thanks to everyone who sent me some reports!

Still, I am waiting for some 1.2-1.5Gb report (all reports I received so far were about 500-600mb which is my case). If I receive one, it can reveal a great mistery of civ4 allocations. If I understand why it might consume 1.2Gb, I might be able to cut it off even in 600Mb case down to 300-350Mb...

Hark -
I emailed you a zip file that includes a perfmon log - it is 4.8MB - let me know if you did not get it and I will send a smaller one without the perflog.

Well, I've been trying the patch and it seems the same memory/CTD problems I've been having are still there. Once I get to the modern era, its like I hit a wall, and the game just crashes every turn.

I did do a little more experimenting and found that if I start up the game, and don't take any turns, but just pan and scan around, the memory usage increases. I assume that it is this increase, coupled with the already high memory usage that is causing the game to crash.

This is private bytes for Civ 4, sampling every 20 secs. All I did was load my modern-era game, let it sit a few minutes, and then scan around a bit. It only lasted a few minutes before it crashed.

I have the same behavior - simply scrolling around the map leds to a huge increase in mem usage. Worse since the patch. Though at least CTD's now give error messages and write to the Windows event log.

You're right...I hadn't checked the event log, but there is an error there:

Wadda ya know, I get the same error a lot as well. However more often the game just freezes, makes my graphic card not respond and I end up with a black screen. :sad:

I've had something like that happen too, the screen goes black, but kind of toggles between "black" and "blacker"...if that makes sense. I have been able to get back to the desktop and kill civ4 though without reseting when this happened. I was hitting alt+tab, ctrl+alt+del, windows key, etc. Eventually something works, although it takes a while.

Awsome work going on here.
I just thought I would sign up on this forum to let you know that I have all the issues you guys talk about here (With the CTD's during end game). I just want to tell you to keep up the good work and to let you know it is appreciated by so many gamers out here that arn't members and just read the forums.
:thumbsup:

Yead, I'd like to second that.

I'm having CTD problems as well.

It's nice to know that there are some people out there who will take their personal time to work on this stuff.

Many thanks. I hope the developers can somehow collaborate with the people doing independent work and maybe come up with some fixes a little faster.....
:lol:

Hitting the windows key is sufficient. It will take about a minute, but then you can go back into civ4 and keep playing. I have found that, if I'm quick to recognize a slowdown I can avoid crashes and keep playing indefinitly.

I have this problem also, the game runs extremely slowly and then will pause for long periods of time whenever I move.

How long will it take Firaxis to fix this issue?

this is pathetic how we even have to do this with a game that we payed good money for that doesnt even work right.

"we"??? YOU are not doing ANYTHING, except complain.
go whine in a different thread, willya?

AsnoT did you not pay good money?

I am disappointed that there is a problem but it is something that happens, and I am sure Firaxis/2k Games are working very hard to resolve the issue.

I've posted in another thread about this, but my CTD's seem to always come when I scroll accross a large or huge map towards mid- or end-game. I have a 256K GeForce 5700 and 1GB RAM running on a P4 2.53GHz, Win XP Pro SR2, Audigy 2, all current drivers. I ramp down the graphics to low, clear the game cache often before starts. Patch 1.09 seems to help somewhat. But I still get occasional CTD's when I try to move accross the map. It seems like the game stalls when rapidly feeding information to the graphics card, perhaps fetching it from memory or the cache. I'm not a programmer so I can't say for sure but that's what it seems like.

ugh.

im typing this in 800 x 600 at 8 colours because of a Civ Crash. I'm mid game on a big map. I have a fair few cities. After a few turns since loading BAM! down she goes, and i get a "report to microsoft" dialog. yeah, cause MS will fix it!

game had taken up 564mb of RAM, which should be ok because I have 1GB. I have a 256mb graphics card. Nvidia GeForce 5800 or something. ambient temp inside the case is 26 degrees celsius, obviously hotter on the chips.

To fix this low performance bug I have changed the following settings:

Enter your C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\ folder and open "_Civ4Config" (.ini file)

Changing the following settings to the ones below solved my problem, hope it works for others also.

AllowScreenShots = 0
SyncInput = 1
D3D9Query = 1
LoggingEnabled = 1
