civ1 GOTM?

Just who will create such monsters though.
just 3 threads to keep things in ORDER.
ask moderator/admin MATRiX to make them sticky?
...
that's awful SiMPLE.

[sarcasm]No, you just did create a civ.1.dos wikipedia...
(so) it's certainly too hard to imagine 3 more GOTM threads at civ.1 fanatics forum...[/sarcasm]
...? :D

but i anyway just did want to discuss it.
...if there's no interest, why (should i) think about it...?

Hah! Somebody did notice that I have a wiki :) And here was I thinking it was invisible to all but me :P

Serious though, I can't be the wiki guy and the GOTM guy. I've got enough internet commitments (forum games, clans to run, mailing-list discussions to operate etc) that it takes me at least a couple hours before I can just chill out and surf.

But please GoldBerg: Now that you've found my wiki.. at least add your player profile there.. please? :)

That "file modification" is REAL civ. There was just revealed already built-in options and made it available. Nothing "non-gameable" was created. In fact you play there the hardest level possible in that civ.

same here. so many communities i have no spare time - i would have to shut down the whole internet thing to get a 'normal' life.
it's kind of an exception if i am able to play a civ.1.dos game this day and the next (most of the time i play 10-20 hours til ~1750 AD and can't continue after this 'session' for a week... )

... i will see what i can do ... at the moment i am finetuning my last.fm preferences, working at my favorite music community, actualize a link list at one forum
and write a critic at another forum (and that's not all) - i better pull the plug...

Why can't the internet just let us live? :P

Ah, what a find! Count me in your community. I just felt the urge to return to Civ after hearing Civ IV was out and reflecting that they glitz it up but nothing ever beat the original.

I'm totally in on this GOTM idea. However, I have a few thoughts:
1. I'm pretty new. I've been out of Civ for years and just returned after Thanksgiving. I've only played 2 games, so I'm still warming up at the lower difficulties. Don't expect me to contribute challenges for the best of you for a long while.
2. In my hay-day, I could always win at King, but I don't think I ever beat Emperor. Or maybe I did just once. I'm not at your caliber, but I'm just as enthusiastic. Please don't exclude parts of our already tiny community by only having Emperor level competition in GOTM. I propose instead: multiple game of the month challenges. If the submitter is Emperor quality let his be the Emperor challenge, but if the submitter is a Prince-level player, let him submit Prince. I expect at our years of experience most people will be submitting the top end of the spectrum, but let's not arbitrarily exclude people. We could, at your discretion limit to the top 3 or 2 levels. However a good low level game could be a great tutorial/warm up for Civ fanatics who haven't played in ages and want to get back into the swing and participate in this community (like me). Do you get what I'm saying?
3. Don't use any hacks. Save games are fine, but if you ask me to modify or replace any of the files of my Civ directory, I'm going to stop using your stuff. Save games created with a editor are fine. In such cases, I prefer not having the stats and rules changed. If you do any monkeying with the mechanics of the basic game, include A BIG WARNING LABEL UP FRONT so nobody will miss it. I don't want to be playing along with my favorite strategy only to find that some critical unit or improvement was altered and doesn't work for me any more!

A HUGE welcome Alex! I'm in the very same boat :) And totally agree with everything you are saying.

The thing is.. nobody seems to want (or has the time) to *start up* the GOTM :(

I don´t know anything about editing, but is it possible to say start a random emperor games, and edit it to make a second save (with same map and everything) on lower level. Thus make some sort of equalizer, everyone can pick his own strenght.

Welcome Alex. :)

Scenario *EARTH 2* by GoldBerg
>>> EMPEREOR LEVEL
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=147603

i suggest this one
as GOTM ( = Game of the Month December 2005 )

1. goal: survive 'til 1750 AD
2. goal: WiN against the others here
a)
score / percentage at 1750 AD ?
b)
# of 'english' inhabitants at 1750 AD ?

discuss?

I'm a little puzzled why everyone here is so hung up on editting scenarios. For a challenge, wouldn't it be more equal and fair to all if someone used Civ to start a game, saved it right away, and then played through. When he saw it was a good/challenging/interesting scenario, submit the initial save and challenge others to beat his INITIAL playthrough (stating year, condition, score, percentage, etc). Then everyone has ONE chance to fairly compete against the original player. Also, the original player, if he's cracked (like me :crazyeye: ) might require additional constraints he applied to his own game like: may not change governments, may not build wonders, must compete for largest single city production of shields/lightbulbs/coins, etc.

Civ is a great game in that there are so many conditions one can place on play that there are practically an infinite number of competitions we could hold.

im with Alex on the whole easy warm up game idea. i think quite a few people will be put off the GOTM comp if you start at emperor level. AND.. yeah what is with all the editted scenarios? just a random saved game from the very 1st turn is equal for everyone and there are an unending supply of random maps available which could keep a GOTM comp going for a very long time!! this could be a very simple and easy thing to set up - we just need to agree on who will be accepting the GOTM submissions and drawing up a winners chart/table!

Hear hear! Alex and camelman are right, y'all! Somebody, anybody start a random game and post the saved 1st turn game. And THAT will be the first GOTM for civ1.

i've (already) told this:

GoldBerg said:
1. we need a GOTM (Game of the Month) RULES thread.
i never did play Civ.2>4 - in never been in the Civ2>4 forums (why should i?)
and i think it's in need to modify the rules for Civ.1.DOS...(just ask)?

2. it should be a Civ.1.DOS GOTM and nothing else
(NO 'civ for win', 'winciv', 'civnet', 'civnintendo', 'civpalmtop', 'cifwh**th*f***ever')

3. i suggest
a Civ.1.DOS GOTM GAME-release thread
so people can release their scenarios for Gotm,
people may play and vote for the scenario -
or
if they already played the game (after DL'ing)
they may post the results of that game

in a

4. Civ.1.DOS GOTM RESULTS thread
just for result listings

and discuss the game(s) in the

5. Civ.1.DOS GOTM DiSCUSSiON Thread
because i've forseen this:

i disagree.
i did work many hours for the GOTM scenario -

Scenario *EARTH 2* by GoldBerg
>>> EMPEREOR LEVEL
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=147603

it works, it's interesting and i did test it's gameplay (the growth and movements of the AI tribes and so on)

if somebody thinks i have a forth with it
i won't compete with the GOTM players in this contest.

a certain rule?
the *scenario-'creator'* / *savegame-attacher*
may NOT play/compete in the GOTM contest -
i think that would be just FAiR, o.k.?

[cynical mode] Eternal RULE

NEVER accept a result from a scenario-creator
who's playing in a competition based on his scenario.
[/cynical mode]

alex & camelman -

EVERYBODY (here) can create scenarios with
TERRAFORM http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=126921
(re)define them with
CivEd.1.4. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=2329391&postcount=24
and
Civ$ http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=112297
Editor(s)
and PRETEND that they are real
and that he/she is SUCH A GOOD guy/player/whatever.

there is NO difference playing a scenario or a random game -
how can ANYbody tell:
this is a scenario somebody did create and played this scenario 1000 times
(with 474.01 game version shift-56 (OPEN MAP) cheat -
after playing 'OPEN MAP' (you can see all movements and the whole map of the game, you even can do changes within the game in the AI tribe's cities...! )
you remove your tracks (there are some after shift-56) with TERRAFORM or Civ$ editor(s)
and place your fantastic save game results here as forum attachement.
FAKE. LAME. BORiNG.

well - it's possible. :)

deal with the fake - you're in the lion's mouth here:
all 20 >>> 40somethings, all specialists and (con)formalists
and all civ.1.DOS lovers.

have trust
or
forget it. :)

i did work half a day (and did tests/finetunings ~24hrs)
to create
a fine and iNTERESTiNG scenario for the month of december 2005 -
i did it in the first line for myself, yes:
to see something interesting while playing -
no other reason.

so
what level do you want:
chieftain, warlord, prince or king?

i will change it for you.

the BEST
i can do, i guess.
:)

GoldBerg's scenario is very good I must say, Im on 1100 AD now. If you think it's very hard and lose just try again!

It is very different than playing a normal game, much more interesting. Every single enemy civ is big, not puny ones that die in 3260 BC.
This lead to a game where there isn't one dominant civ, but alot of competitive civs. I predict that there will be still competition even in 2000 AD more than one civ.
Will post results at 1750 AD:goodjob:

I'm going to play earth2 today, right now. Let you know how it turns out. :)

thanks.
if it's too hard i will change the difficulty level to king, prince, warlord or chieftain.
and post this seperate as GOTM with an additional attachement at that

thread.

BUT, people, PLEASE -
just try out the scenario
before you judge the scenario.

the best part is that those AI civs develop themselves from just one AI start capital city 'to that point' - so every game it will be a different situation. ;)
in one game one of those AI civs grow dominant, in another an other tribe (tested).
many maps define from the start who will/may win the game, this one is different. ;)
Tenochtitlan said:

exact what i had in mind -
always strong opponents 'in store':
even if you fight down one big player,
there still will be enough big players left
with strong high tech armies and a lot big cities.
this game keeps busy.

Ok. I'm still in 1460 AD and my civ is too big so it takes a while for each turn, and im gettin attacked by the advanced russians with their armors. And i have to strategize to transfer my riflemen to cities where hes attacking.
