The civ1 GOTM? thread was going along quite well and then this

Civ1 - Game of the Month
Forum for the Civ1 GOTM

starts and no more post.

Where are you guys?

I admire your dedication to this GOTM Dack but don't expect others to be as dedicated. It's easy to post on an iternet-forum what a great idea you think something is, but to invest time to actually play a game like this is something completely different.
I don't want to sound too negative but I've seen it before in the Civ2 demo game in which I participated. We started with 20-30 players and ended with about 5 after a few months. That's the way it goes with things like this on the internet I'm afraid.

...new 'old DOS worshippers'
of
' sid meier's civilization '
-civfanatic members- are always in need here,
1 'new' 'old'timer/nostalgic the week/month,
this will help.

to go out and spread the word
(at i-net forums, personal websites or wikipedia)
-everywhere out there-
is the key. ;)

I think the key is that the people who already have said that they want to play submit their results!

You are one of the people who can save our GOTM forum, Goldberg. Why don’t you play?

i (did) play (it).
but i refuse to post results because 'i suck'
( 'somebody' wrote this here - i think it was ... uuummm ... oh, yes: YOU ) -
people who suck shouldn't post results -
but what do i know? :D

Haha! There you have it. I *played* the first one and sucked so hard I didn't sutmit. I played the second one.. got half way and then quit I was losing so badly there was no way I could sutmit a result (I would probably have died).

And finally, with this one, I haven't touched civ in weeks. Let alone download a GOTM for it. I'm at year 12 college and it's coming up to my mid-years. Plus, I'm involved as a main character (Oberon) in a Shakespeare play that's only 6 weeks away (yikes!) AND I have two massive papers due in a couple weeks..

I started the May game :goodjob:

 What? Why not post the results anyway?

Is this some kind of pride thing? Do you guys want the GOTMs to be a display window for über-human civ1 skills maybe? Or are you afraid of what people might think about you if they get the chance to know how you play?

Forget it. If only expert players should submit their results, virtually nobody would submit results at all, and the GOTM would die. Actually it is practically dead already thanks to the pride of people like you.

We need all the submissions we can get, and people who suck should definitely submit their results. Dack’s GOTMs have secondary goals, so you can submit if you loose the game too.

Nobody should be embarrassed about their civ1 skills. Come on everybody: Step out of the closet and expose your abilities to the world!

Pikachu
You hit the nail on the head. Truly a concise review of the situation.
We need posts and comments negative and positive. If you come here to just look there will soon be nothing to look at.

we're different human beings with (for sure!) different reasons. :D

i did first a cheat 475.01 version 'open map' game to see how the game (the AI civs) moving/running here...
(just my personal interest first because i like to design landscapes and situations too and i had a hard time the last tries with scenarios i did
that refused to work properly - see terraform thread
)
it took me many hours and after that
i didn't start a new one
(normally i play ~1 game of civDOS a month now, not more)

that's all.

...
just to show
i don't try to look like a 'super'
or 'uber' player here:

i did post my result into the SPACE RACE thread
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=113563

although i never will do as good as kirilov or carniflex
with development, science speeds and logistic strategies like those both players do
and
nobody (of YOU people - for example) ever did try the SPACE RACE contest
or (better) did post his/her result(s) there
although ~60 people did download the contest files in the 2 periods of time
they were available here at server.

I play Civ I only during holydays, when I have not other computer than an old slow one !
I'll download the GOTM to play later, so I cannot participate to the forum.:(
BTW, DOS version is not the only Civ i :p
... I play on an old mac (68k) on which civ I turns well but Civ II is too slow !
:badcomp:

Wow. I see fire.

Nope. Not a 'pride thing'. I'm not afraid of what people might think of me. I merely didn't post my saves because the whole point of a GOTM is comparing and compition. Now.. I think I may still have my saves. But it would be pointless them up because I didn't even win them. Maybe you can use your imagination.. *uses the force making everybody see trada has posted his saves* There. It makes no difference, my friend. My saves are nothing to look at. *shrugs*

Again with the pride? Heck, let me repeat something too.. I don't give what people think of me Really. I try to give a good impression and cheer peoples lives up all the time. But if they refuse to see me in a postive way.. That's their prob, mate.

Heck, why am I arguing this? Everybody here knows I don't have time for a GOTM anyway. Exams in three weeks.. I shouldn't even be bothering answering this wack accusation. *flies out the door*

If I would read this thread and wouldn't know that it is about civ 1, then I would think it is about a matter of life and death. Can't everyone just enjoy the game?

trada said:

Huh? Of course they are something to look at. At least they must be better than having nothing to look at at all. And we sure could need a few more names in the result lists. Well, if we one day get result lists, that is.

Anyway, all contributions will be appreciated, no matter how you play. A hopeless result is always better than no result at all, so come on and submit whatever you got!

How did your exams go, trada? It looks like you must have finished them successfully by now, judging by your posting in the civ1 forum. Maybe that means that you have time to play the GOTM too? I have extended the deadline for the May GOTM, so you still have the chance to play it.

So come on everybody: Play the GOTM! After all you must know that the best way to spend the summer is to sit indoors and play a good game of civ1 :p

They are :) It's now the Saturday after my week of exams. And they went pretty well. Yup, I'll give the GOTM a go now. I spent Friday afternoon playing civ. I saved the game and turned off my laptop at 3. 8 hours of civ isn't a bad way to start my addiction again :)
