I haven't attacked you, at least. We have an alliance, remember? ;)

Sorry JD, but I show all the update at once. That time when I was banned was an exception.

When you get home, you'll have an update.

Or maybe if you wait an hour.

An hour? Forty minutes passed now... Let's see if you're able to post it in time...

The Second Epoch: Closing

"I stood upon the mountain peak, and lo, Strategius began to speak."

-Chronicle of the War of the World's Roof, Sempronius Alatinus

Epilogue:

There were so many of them. Cheering, waving fists in the air. The spearmen were particularly rowdy. The Latismen...not so much. They were no berzerkers, the Latismen. Their fanaticism was in battle alone, and the sages reflected on this. The freedmen were the rowdy ones, but the slaves remained quiet. Former slaves. So many whispers, though. Whispers that they were marching to their deaths.

That is why the freedmen, the archers and the spearmen, cheered. They were afraid. And conversely, that is why the Latismen did not cheer. Their entire lives had been one long travesty of pain and suffering...no Eldranian demon, no fear of torture and death could sway them. They did not cheer because they felt no need to.

It took the whole fleet to move them. Fifty galleys, working in unison, groaning under the strain. But they arrived, the Dome of Kallamas glittering in the distance. It was rising slowly, the dedicated labor of thousands of craftsmen pushing it forward. Even so, it would be years before that great hall was finished.

The new weapons arrived from Lux in the dawn's light, gleaming reddish orange. They had struck a new vein on the eastern peak, one Septilion said. Yes, said a nearby Tactica, but how long would it hold out? As long as the One desired it, replied the Septilion. At any rate, the new copper was forged, and the Latisi were delivered to the Army. The Eldranians would certainly not expect this.

As the Army marched on into Kalmar, they began to notice something odd. Grey and brown clad men, carrying bows or clubs, joined them. They slowly filtered in, walking through the forest outside of the main column. It was dark that night, with no moon, but there were several thousands of them. The Tribes of the Eastern Keran had come to Veritas' aid. "They will not wear grey for long," whispered one Decadion to his Decade. Their real purpose was known to the army...but it would remain secret for now. Everyone knew the demons had spies. Some said that the forest itself aided them. But far more trusted in their leader...in the Stratikrator.

Strategius was Autorex no longer. The Assemblum sat, in it's pride of place in Veritas, the High Elders unanimously declaring the aging former-Autorex the Stratikrator. Few knew that Strategius was now seventy-five years old. Though his hair was silver, he could have been a man in his prime. As all of his soldiers whispered, he carried fifty pounds of armor like it was nothing.

They were approaching the Roof. It was time for the plan to be set in motion, the plan that was devised in the Tower of the Arch, a vast map of the known world set before the Stratikrator and his captains.

And so, Goludani and Strategius parted for the last time in their lives. They knew this. And so the two warriors embraced, and left into the night. The two armies were identical now, in dress and in manner.

One army went downward to the Eastern Plain. And to the Veritasans surprise, their army...went up. A man approached Strategius, melting out of the forest. He was thin, and of pale skin. Not Aneyan...different.

"What is your purpose on this undefiled mountain?"

"I would make revenge for an era of slaughter."

"And in whose name will you wreak such great vengeance?"

"In the name of those called Hathran, those called Gargari, and those called Keran."

"I am called Hathran. I am the last. These mountains were once known by us, but no longer. We died in the place called Duality."

"This, I know. And thence, I go. It will be a holy place, long after the demons are exorcised from this land."

"I speak for the Hathran, and Dula before. We will take you over the mountains. Leave none alive on the other side."

"I do not intend to."

Update 9- Years 820-855: Knives Fall

The Hajanic War has come to an end. General Hajan of Mogulia proved his diplomatic skills by bringing Veritas and Khemri onto their side, forcing a peace offer with the Gerbers, at pre-war borders.

But the Gerbers weren't going to leave quietly. They destroyed every Mogul building in the north, including the fortresses at the border.
(-1 Mogul Rural Economy, No Mogul Economy this turn, -1 Gerber Confidence)

The Eldranian crusade has reached its most violent levels yet. A colossal and well trained force flooded into Nkondi lands, quickly taking all of the former Gargari realm, now an utterly destroyed wasteland.

With a quick succession of battles, the Eldranians gained control of a vast tract of the Nkondi's eastern lands. They then crossed the River Kalmar, and marched southwards, to the beleagured City of Tigot. The city was surrounded, and the occupied Aneyan lands were salted and burned. But Tigot held out, and holds out to this day with the help of Tristarian food shipments up the Kalmar River.

Tristaria, realizing the dire situation of their ally too late, having been focused on maintaining their Eldranian beachhead, were unable to do more than assault the rear of the Eldranian army in a series of indecisive skirmishes.

As war raged over the fields of Aney-Tigot, a smaller conflict erupted to the east of Eldrania. An expeditionary force of 2000 Eldranian Spearmen discovered the young nation of Davar. Instantly declaring these people to be demons, the Eldranians proceeded to kill everyone they saw. The Davarians quickly amassed their army, which was easily twice as large as the Eldranian force, if less well-trained and equipped.

The Eldranians managed to cross the Dava before meeting the whole force of the Davarian army. At the Battle of Boro, the Eldranians fought with a terrible efficiency, but they could not beat the more numerous and motivated forces of Davar. The Eldranian force was annihilated, but at considerable cost to the Davarians.

In Veritas, Autorex Strategius had finally completed his vast reorganizations of the nation. The low ranking, and sometimes enslaved Zibonese and Kalmar were raised to the level of Veritasian citizens. Agricultural and land use reforms swept the lands, probably saving the eroding farmlands. And the administrative center of Veritas was moved to the young city of Kallamas, built at the center of the Veritasian nation. A great complex, the Dome of Light, became the new center of Veritas’ government.

While pleasing many groups of the nation and definitely for the greater good of Veritas, many more were annoyed by the actions of Strategius, and the increasing power of the ‘conquered ones’.
(+ Kallamas Economic Center, -1 Veritasian confidence)

Strategius also began the conversion of Tristarians and Moguls to the Church of the One, with limited success.

With Veritas running strongly once again, Strategius stepped down after nearly a half-century of ruling absolutely, and became the Stratikrator, the position he had desired and deserved so many years earlier. Strategius had now only one unfulfilled goal remaining.

To destroy Eldrania.

Stratikrator Strategius gained many recruits from the recently freed slaves, and from the Keran tribes between Veritas and Eldrania. His smiths had devised great axes called latises for his army. An army nearly 10 000 men strong. Eldrania was finally going to meet its match.

The first move was made by the Keran Tribes, under the leadership of their great Chief Goludani. He led his people in attack against the southernmost Eldranian forts, wearing the uniforms of Veritas. The attacks were not enough to cause serious damage, but enough to distract Eldrania.

As Eldrania’s sophisticated messenger system spread the word of Veritasian invasion, a great force was mustered and sent to deal with the incursion. The Eldranians attacked the Keranese disguised as Veritasians, and drove them off.

It was then that the full force of Veritas fell upon Eldrania.

Under the leadership of Stratikrator Strategius, the grand army of Veritas entered Eldranian lands through lightly-defended passes in the southern Keran range. While this had some cost on his troops, he had good luck with the weather, and lost few men to storms or treacherous slopes.

The Eldranian general immediately sounded an alarm, and flung his badly outclassed and outnumbered force at the Veritasians. The Veritasians defeated them, and surged northwards.

Everywhere they ran into Eldranians, the locals would fight with horrifying zeal and viciousness. Several officers were injured when they captured a young Eldranian boy, but were then attacked by him, armed only with his fingers and teeth.

It was clear that there was to be no surrender.

Strategius led his forces to victory over and over against the Eldranian armies, but the Eldranian people were his biggest concern. For during the capture of the city of Eldraxaros, every common citizen fought to the death, causing unpleasantly high Veritasian casualties.

Veritas continues to push further north into Eldrania, but are bogged down my civilian resistance. Some feel that victory is near, some believe it to be impossible. It will all come down to the will of the Eldranian people, and the skills of Strategius. One will be just slightly stronger, and that may be enough to tip the scales.

Emor’s explorations into surrounding lands continue. South of the new city of Tarenda, a large group of Barbarians have been discovered, but the language barrier has not yet been broken.

Attempts to improve the economic output of former Kehexou have succeeded, but their results are unlikely to have much effect at the moment, as the colony is currently in an unstable state, as the Khemri governor was assassinated by unknown enemies.
(+Soloxau Trade Center, no effect for next turn)

With the quick rise of Otornosiasm to becoming the dominant religion of Nurmafer, the city of Turfar has become the center of pilgrimage for over 100 000 people.
(+Turfar religious center)

Nurmafer’s expeditions into the south have brought some exciting discoveries. An even greater variety of metals have been found in the southern mountain range, though many are too hard or brittle to be worked in Nurmaferi forges.

An even more fascinating discovery was discovered in a later southern exploration. To the southwest, a group of barbarians who ride mighty beasts have been discovered. The beasts, called Ramids, are easily twice as tall as a man, with mighty horns on their heads. While the barbarians use them for agriculture and work, the Nurmaferis quickly realized the beasts’ military potential. Nurmafer’s scouts traded for two, and brought them back to Turfar.
(Note: Ramids are kind of like a cross between Rhinos and Elephants. 2 curved horns on the side of the head, two beneath the mouth pointing down and forwards, and 3 in a triangular pattern on the nose and eyebrows)

As these explorers returned to Nurmafer, their great discovery went fairly unnoticed. For something much more important had just started.

War.

The great army of Khemri flooded over the Nurmaferi border. Chief Mennodius the thirty-second quickly declared the attack to be the beginning of a Holy war in defense of the homeland. He mobilized his forces, and evacuated border towns. Fearing the might of the Khemri Royal Guards, he refused to let his forces directly engage Khemri, preferring low-cost hit and run attacks.

Calling upon all able-bodied men to defend the city of Udar, Mennodius turned the city into a powerful fortress. Khemri quickly surrounded it, and it became painfully apparent that the garrison could not hold out. So when Khemri attacked, the Nurmaferis torched the city as they fought. They were defeated, although they did deal high casualties to Khemri, and the remains of Udar were captured.

From that point on, Nurmafer adopted a guerilla skirmishing strategy. Several pockets of resistance harassed Khemri from behind, and parts of Nurmafer’s main army launched hit-and-run attacks. The advance of Khemri river boats was halted by several obstacles and traps in the River Khim. Logs were often dropped into the river, crashing into the Khemri ships and blocking off smaller sections of the river.

Meanwhile, Khemri’s seemingly inexorable advance continued. One by one, the Nurmaferian cities fell to the might of their invaders, some intact, and others burned under Chief Mennodius’ scorched earth policy. Nurmafer still, however, managed to avoid serious casualties in all of their skirmishes while dealing out considerably larger damage to their enemies, while their guerillas managed to sporadically disrupt Khemri supply lines.

The war continued this way until after the Battles of Nestar and Bataar, where Nurmafer once again razed their own cities and retreated into the mountainous fortifications surrounding their capital. With their backs against the wall, there could now be no skirmishing or retreating. The people of Nurmafer worked desperately to fortify their mountain fastnesses to the maximum, and the Temple Guards prepared themselves for what might have been a final battle.

But it never came. The Khemri army settled itself down, and consolidated its gains. A final, decisive battle has yet to come, but it is only a matter of time.

The Yath’al Shanaal’s Crystalic Church declared that it was going to liberate the Crystalists living to its north. In what was termed ‘The People’s Crusade’, the Crystalist Qua’laen Jal overthrew their Neocrystalic government and pledged allegiance to the Yath al’Shanaal.

With this great change in the makeup of the region and the powers of religion, the Yath’al Shanaal restructured itself into a Theocratic Republic named Shalamari, meaning ‘Crystal Clear’ in their tongue.

The melding of the Qua’laen Jal and Yath’al Shanaal into one race has begun.

Due to strong governmental support, there hasn’t been any backlash from older Crystalic priests, annoyed with those from a former Neocrystalist nation becoming full-fledged Crystalic priests.

The people of Gorin continue to expand the ever-growing borders of their nation. The Rowanthi’Orti has begun a system of education, with the dream of making the Gorin the wisest people on the earth- a goal mocked by many observers.
