G-Minor I

Bah, that is a nice finish Wastin. I figured that was about the limit for OCC. But you have 2 non-OCC wins below that so yours won't make the win list :P

I just had the best OCC start that I have ever had. 8 flood plains, grassland/river corn, 7 grassland/river, gold plains hill, 3 plains hills, was able to start on a plains hill. I then popped 2 workers + 1 i was building already.

I had explored a lot of the island and hadn't met anyone, thought it was funny but I went ot the opposite corner. I was by myself! Both of the opponents were on the other island.

This killed me. I couldn't trade for any beginning techs and I was like 4 turns from alphabet when I figured it out. Should have just went around it. Managed to get mass media around 285 BC I think (whatever the year closest to that, that is a turn). Had 1 engineer and 4 forest pre-chopped.

When the election came around both voted for HC and I missed getting Sec Gen by a few votes. I then did a run for biology and farmed all my land. Was able to block a diplo victory for the other two forever. Ended with a population of 30 with +12 food still. HC won by 1 vote.

Did a bit better now... 1580AD. Still need to pay more attention to the techs to do better, and use the great people for the right things. One more try tomorrow...

I think i finally learned something. :goodjob:
Not quite a BC finish, but closer. Finally figured out how to use my great people (GE for UN, GS for electricity, GA for mass media) and also used the oracle for physics, and liberalism for ?? (the other late tech). It was cool.
Maybe if i get lucky with getting settlers from huts, i would do much better. in this game i just got a free worker.

Thanks to everybody posting here for all the hints and strategies posted.

As this comes to an end, I have to say I've had way too much fun with this Gauntlet. I just got into Civ4 recently and was preoccupied with Huge/Marathon games that sprawled into almost Sim City nature. So these settings were foreign to me. Never played a diplomatic victory game. Never played a Duel map.

Seems odd to say, but I learned a lot of new stuff from Settler difficulty playing with y'all. Electricity and Radio in B.C. times :crazyeye: Focused tech researching can be soooo much more powerful than my previous scatterbrained method. Finding out that leveraging great people early can reap huge rewards like the Great Scientist ~1700BC showed me a weakness in my game.

I wouldn't have thought a Settler difficulty game could be so much fun, but I've gotten a good two weeks of enjoyment sidetracking myself into "One more try". Thanks for the fun!

I decided to squeeze in a submission of my own at the last moment. Won't be placing too high on the list, 1766ad.

Do we have until midnight tonight? I might be able to squeeze one more game in.
Any games accepted before the update will count. We put the 24th as the closing date to stop you all submitting at the last minute, so we'll have time to verify the games.

Definatley a fun gauntlet. I also learned a lot even though I never got below 1000 AD. Thanks for all the hints and advice. :)

And the Gauntlet is concluded!

Congratulations to the victors:
1) HighDesert
2) Sumorex
3) godotnut

This was definitely our most popular romp yet, as attested to by the full submission list!

Congratulations everyone!

What happened to those people who claimed wins before 100BC? didn't they bother to submit their games?

Would it be possible to publish an intermediate Gauntlet list periodically during the Gauntlet period? This would make it possbile to see how your games compare to the best submitted (and accepted) games at any time. Or is this against the spirit of the Gauntlet contest?

Actually, I was sort of wondering what happened to those really early finishes too. I didn't think I had a chance at the top three! I'm guessing this top three is really a "top three of the compliant."

I guess these games, if ever submitted, are not compliant with the general HOF rules either, since they are also absent from the HOF tables.

They forgot.

It's a shame (and quite some coincidence) if all those outstanding performers forgot to submit their games. I was looking forward to learn from the best by studying their player logs.

Wow, this will teach me to not give up on a game because it didn't beat a posted finish date. The tail end of most of my games were just enter-spam to register an earlier finish than I'd gotten before. Now I know better! Milk that score to win a tie break.

So what did happen with the 350BC finishes?

I'm afraid you won't be finding out from any of us on the staff.;)

I don't believe anyone expect the staff to reveal this kind of information. However, it would be useful if the people claiming wins before 70BC would back up their claims by actually submitting their save files, or alternatively provide an explanation to the forum if there was misinterpretation with the game settings etc. This is a competitive environment, and I believe the Gauntlet winners would be interested in knowing whether there were better games or not.

Previously for Civ3 we've posted an official best date so far. It looked like that was putting player's off if the best date so far was too good, so we stopped doing it.

Had the opposite effect on me! I gave up and coasted thru the end of my 10BC and 70BC games because they weren't in 'contention' so to speak and I was just waiting for the vote years to occur  Lesson learned though, milk that score at the end.

For this particular Gauntlet, the best winning dates were available in various posts anyway. In addition, there were some claims about even earlier winning dates that never made it to the final official list for some reason. In this case an official intermediate list would actually have helped on the problem you describe about putting people off.
