LINESII- Into the Darkness

Congrats with post #1800, Thlayli! :D

"Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege. "
"Fools rush in where fools have been before. "

Anyway it was Thlayli's idea for the war to continue. I'd be happy with peace. ::sigh:: Why can't we be friends?

Indeed, why can't we? :p

Anyway, on a completely different note, I want you all to vote on my poll. :) Yeah, this is OT, but we need something to do while we wait for Iggy.

Thlayli said:

lurker's comment: Not quite the spectacular job in applying this one elsewhere, eh? ;) Hope to see the update soon. I've no clue what's going on but watching the bickering is fun, so...

so you guys are still fighting? Arnt you just playing into the citadels hands?

Oh and I like this quote

"The brave hide behind technology. The stupid hide from it. But the clever have technology, and hide it."

its thlayli who is continuing the war from what i gather, which sucks

and what does the citadel have to do with this?

Japalona Dude (cant be bothered to look back to find out the spelling) is getting the people all riled up, he might make them revolt and stuff, thats what his religion is all about controlling everyone else.

Look, if the war hadn't continued, the update would have been done on Friday night.

Now it's late at night, I'm back home, and I'm resuming the update.

Kal wrote quite confusing orders, so that's delaying me.

I really hope I don't have to stay up late to finish this, I have school tomorrow.

I'm probably screwing myself in a couple of NESes by spending all of my weekend working on this NES, but I know you'll appreciate it.

Resuming update.

Update 15- Years 1100-1138: Storm from the North

A storm has struck from the north. And that storm was the Lengels.

Little was known of these people until very recently. It is speculated that they may share ancestry with the Gamorreans, for they share their skill in horsemanship and, in some cases, appearance.

From what can be pieced together from unreliable barbarian reports, the Lengels first appeared in their north a few decades ago. They assaulted and quickly conquered many northern villages. Before engaging in battle, they will demand that the village surrender to the might of the Lengels. If their enemy does so, they are given horses and integrated into the War-Host. If the enemy fights- no word of them is ever heard again.

Because of this, the Lengel War-Host is multiracial. What holds them together is a desire to expand their nation, to cover all of the world in Lengel hoofprints, and the iron will of the Lengel Warlords.

Frightened barbarians tell of the Greatest of the Lengels, Mightiest of the Warlords, Cleverest of the Tacticians, most Brutal of the Warriors- the Lengelzai.

After conquering the northern tribes, the Lengelzai, as he is called, heard word of the rich and vast nations to the south. He heard of wars, and division. He would sweep southwards, and unite them under his rule.

The Lengelzai moves south…

The Maugotians had heard of this threat. And they prepared themselves. Sending out their army, they began the slow and difficult process of uniting the tribes under their rule, using the mounting threat of the Lengel ‘madmen’ to the north as their means and reason.

The Citadelers were also preparing. They were sending aid to tribes, to help them unite against the Lengel menace.

But despite the urgency of their situation, the Lengelzai moved faster.

In a lightning strike, Lengel cavalry crossed the Wardash and began the conquest of the northern darkskinned tribes. Many surrendered without a fight, the Lengel repuatation having preceded the invaders. But on first contact with a large Maugotian force the Lengels retreated, apparently unwilling to fight a larger force.

Celebrating that their enemies had been frightened off, their reputation proven false, the Maugotians pursued.

Then, the Lengels struck.

From three directions, Lengel forces far larger than the one the Maugotians had seen earlier struck. The Maugotians desperately improvised defenses, but the rumours of Lengel speed were proven. With deadly efficiency, they destroyed the ranks of spearmen who had recently joined Maugot, and then struck down thousands of Maugotian archers.

But the Lengels did not press their advantage. As Maugot reeled and their prestige among the barbarians took a serious hit, the Lengels struck out at the rest of the locals. Their conquering led them to the foothills of Ikki.

The salvation of these people was their mountainous home. The Lengelzai knew that he could not assault them with cavalry.

So he has made nonstandard demands to them. Aid the Lengels, give them tribute, or be besieged and die slow, painful deaths.

The Ikki have yet to respond.

Expanding further south into the mountains, the monastery of Shugyoku has joined the growing Ikki nation.

The Lengel War-Host then continued southwards, coming into contact with possibly their biggest challenge yet, the united barbarians aided by the Citadel.

But again with their trademark speed, the Lengels struck down enemy armies as they were assembled. The united barbarian states quickly fell apart into their original divisions, and were conquered.

The few remaining independent barbarian tribes then sought the protection of the Nkondi. The Lengels’ easy conquests are over. Now, they must lay their full force down on one of their more advanced and organized neighbours. But which one will it be who feels the rumble of the Lengel cavalry?

The Gamorreans have ceased their attacks. They have, inexplicably, turned to expansion and exploration, though many suspect this to be merely a means to the end of continuing military actions later.

Thula Zam has declared that all the unclaimed lands between Malkavia, Gamorrea and the Citadel are under his jurisdiction, and many of these lands have been settled.

Attempts were made to contact the ‘Lentels’ the Gamorreans had heard of, but emissaries didn’t make it further than Ikki.

The Malkavians’ ancient religion of Dualism, the struggle of Bane and Ignatia, and their myriad interpretations is beginning to meld with the Citadel’s religion of New Eldism.

Along with the Citadelers, civilizing overtures are being made to the barbarians to the north. Malkavia has offered trade, giving metals in exchange for horses. This has been well received. The Citadel brings centralized government and sciences, which has been somewhat less well received.

The Citadel has been regularly sending out naval explorations. And after years of mere coastal mapping, a breakthrough has been made.

The Citadel’s ships Penseive and Prophet discovered a new landmass. And what was on it was something no one would have expected.

Veritasian culture.

The people there spoke a rather twisted and archaic version of Valin, and called themselves Exilsium, the exiles. After much research and query, the Citadelers learned these people’s history.

In the great earthquake of 912, many ships had been lost. But on one tsunami, a number of ships had been carried far away from Veritas, and landed on this island. They had started off as survivalists, and gradually developed into a self-sufficient culture. Their religion was similar to the Church of the One, but a few steps beyond it. The first cataclysm was the banishment of Veritas from Tellus, the second was their banishment from Veritas to the lands of Exilsium. The third, and those beyond are still unknown, but will continue to separate the devout from the damned, until only the purest remain.

These people take great pride in their religious purity and peacefulness. Although this peacefulness has an edge. They are often quite angered at mention of Veritasians, who they often refer to as a ‘damned nation’. As the pure were taken to Exilsium, the impure who survived remained in Veritas.

Soon after the Citadelers arrived, a Davarian sloop landed on the same island. The Exiles were significantly less kindly to these people, declaring them to be ‘puppets of the damned’.

After spending several months in Exilsium, the Citadelers and Davarians returned to their homeports and reported their finds. The news had reached through most of the cradle within a few years.

After years of bureaucratic stalling and oversights, bronze technology has been gifted to Davar by Veritas. Davarian forces were all upgraded soon after.

Bronze has also been given to the Kehexou.
(Davar and Kehexou enter Bronze Age)

Following encounters with the archaic Oneists living to the north of former Eldrania, the man who would later become known as St. Pire was enlightened on omissions and possible errors in traditional Oneism.

He returned to Davar and preached his new views on the faith. He quickly gained support, and by the end of his life a significant part of Davar was converted to what became known as Pirian Oneism. A great Cathedral to Pire is being built in Ardan, his coastal home city.

Davar has pulled out of its holdings west of the Kalmar River in occupied Gerber, returning them to the Cecilid throne. Despite some confusion from high Gerber government, believed to be due to mild mental illness in Cecil XXXI, a truce has been made. Peace has reached this region, a rare island of stability surrounded by a sea of war.

Croyodon has expanded over the mountains and towards the sea, cutting possible Skilv’so expansion to the north. Masra Crystalism is beginning to take a firm hold on them.

The northern Gorinese city of Dasht, being a critical trade link between north and south, has become a center of economic exchange between all of the nations of the Upper Wardash.
(+Dasht Economic Center)

After more working with iron, the Gorinese have managed to make a strong iron alloy. But the man who succeeded in learning this secret perished very soon after, along with his notes, when his blacksmith shop caught fire and burned down a quarter of the city of Gorin.

The Temple of Heaven in Guanzhong has been completed. Many nearby lands have been convinced to join Guangfei as the overpowering culture of the nation settles upon them.

Competitions to discover and refine the strongest metals in Guangfei have been popular competitions, but have yet to produce significant results.

Numerous innovations have been made by the people of Guangfei, such as currency, the Han Code of Laws, military reforms, Astronomy and Astrology.

But at the time, only of the effects of Guangfei’s actions was given much attention. The marriage of Xi Shi to an Oligarch of the Shangei league. Xi Shi was a woman of beauty unparalleled by anyone known to Guangfei, and, depending on your opinions, of beauty simply unparalleled by anyone.

She was a ‘gift’ of good will from Guangfei to Shangei, but as it would turn out was more damaging to Shangei than any weapon.

Her marriage to the Oligarch of Shysang sparked intense envy from the other Oligarchs. Playing to their aspirations and desires, Xi Shi turned many of the Oligarchs against each other. Many a court intrigue took place, and many more covert assassinations. Several Oligarchs would kill for her affection, and a few did. By the time Xi Shi passed away of natural causes, the government of the Shangei League was a mess, after years of subtle manipulation by Xi Shi. Whether the results of her actions were intentional or not is still a mystery.

In this time of instability, much of Guangfei’s society managed to take seed in the Shangei league. Once the dust had settled and Shangei had returned to its previous level of stability, it was a considerably closer culture to Guangfei, and comparatively weaker as well.

Trinlin has expanded, assimilating nearby minor tribes. They have lengthened their borders in all directions, but some worry that they are growing too fast, and may be torn apart as the nation may become incohesive as it spreads.

The religion of Trinlinism which has been developing in Trinlin revolves around the belief in 5 gods. Zester is for the sky, Terrium is of the earth, Wiviter is the god of the water, Ouvunter is the god of the wind, and Cinnav is the god of the fire. The people of Trinlin have begun the construction of a first great temple, to the god Zester.

The Nurmaferi exodus is continuing, but people begin to tire of moving. The exodus should stop soon, or the Nurmaferi nation may be literally torn apart.

Galleys exploring in the south have made contact with strange ships and people. There hasn’t been a breakthrough in the language barrier yet, but apparently the people there are called ‘Kwong Fay’. ;)

Shalamari has made many domestic innovations, which has made life easier for parts of the population and encouraged a population boom.
(+20 000 Shalamari Population)

The trade and working of glass has also created a major business, with trade goods going as far as Maugot in the north and Myocaca in the south.

The people of the Crystal Ridge Alliance and the Oneists were finally at peace. They could lick their war wounds, and prosper again.

But it was not to be.

For from the second that a false peace was signed, both sides had no plans of standing by their signatures. Khemri still was convinced that victory for the Crystal Ridge Alliance was inevitable, and Veritas still clung to what could no be described as nothing other than imperialistic ambitions.

The peace lasted a few years. Khemri set up a new capital at Khi, and began to expand southwards. The Shalamari glass trade started up. Gorin began to expand towards the western mountains.

Then everything went wrong.

A Khemri man managed to break into a banquet hall in Veritas where High Elder Dominius was making a toast to peace. Screaming ‘Alexander will Conquer!’ he loosed an arrow, slaying the leader of Veritas’ Assemblum.

War was redeclared immediately. Khemri sent several letters of protest, claiming how ridiculous it would have been for them to attack Veritas so blatantly, even if they did wish to attack Veritas.

But this attack was, in someways, a blessing in disguise. Alexander Khemr had not trusted Veritas completely, and had prepared for this possibility. Now that Veritas had declared war, in Khemri’s eyes he held the moral high ground. Peace protests would not be a problem.

In Veritas, however, there was some doubt as to the validity of Veritas’ declaration of war. The attack was, admittedly, overly blatant. But the vast majority of Veritas was willing to trust their Assemblum.

Shortly before these events unfolded, chaos broke out in Kehexou. Terias Gayanax, son of the late Maryas Gayanax, arrived in Kehexou with the goal of overthrowing Deras Mayanas. Gayanax quickly gained support in rural areas and in the south, but Mayanas had great support in the cities.

But Gayanax, for all his positive traits, was disliked by many Kehex. He was seen as nothing more than a Veritasian puppet, intent on throwing Kehexou back into the War again. At worst, Mayanas was neutral in foreign politics and stable domestically.

So Kehexou again fell into warfare, divided again between the families Gayanax and Mayanas. Neither side has yet gained an upper hand before the Great War resumed.

Veritas made the first move. A large force crossed the Wardash, into Khemri territory.

Simultaneously, a Veritasian naval force approached Tekrehexou. The Khemri navy was quick to react. A large force of Tridents confronted the Veritasian fleet, which had received little support from its allies. Davar’s ships were exploring, Kehexou’s were involved in civil war, and Emor’s were AWOL. Veritas put up a brief fight, then was forced to retreat by overwhelming enemy numbers, despite the new line of Trimarines the Veritasian shipwrights had produced.
(-10 Veritasian Bimarines, -5 Khemri Tridents)

Khemri would remain dominant at sea.

The land force, however, quickly pushed Khemri back. The Khemri border army, while large, was apparently taken by surprise and without a leader. They retreated in disorganized fashion, putting up little fight other than a few random skirmishes. The warning beacons were lit, but the the second beacon was not lit, possibly due to wet conditions, a missing beacon lighter, or something else. Whatever the reason, the signal didn’t make it out of sight. So the Khemri force began racing towards the Crystal Ridge Mountains and its allies to raise the alarm, through the Crystal Ridge mountains. Stratikrator Delgani considered the situation.

He could take Netsihasko and risk a siege after taking it, as the Khemri force could easily return and cut off their retreat. Also, other Crystal Ridge Alliance nations could have been warned by the Khemri fleet, and were likely sending aid.

Or he could charge and destroy the disorganized Khemri border force as it entered the Crystal Ridge mountains, ‘crushing Khemri like a hammer on an anvil’ as his predecessor Cendrian, had attempted. The Khemri force was in chaos, and had a good chance of getting cornered. And he had excellent maps of the mountain passes due to Cendrian’s expedition a few years earlier.

Delgani opted for the latter, leaving a small force at Netsihasko.

His army pursued the Khemri force, which was beginning to finally show signs of control. As Delgani had hoped, the Khemri force was chased into a dead-end valley.

It was perfect.

Too perfect.

The massive ambush came from all directions. To his horror, Delgani realized some mistakes he had made. In his enthusiasm and focus on destroying the Khemri force, he had become overeager. And he had expected to have a good element of surprise. He had expected small Khemri ambushes.

But nothing like this.

It seemed that half of the entire Crystal Ridge Alliance had been hiding high up in the mountains around the valley.

A deadly new weapon was also unleashed upon them. The Shalamari and Gorin had coordinated to create a catapult that flung deadly spheres filled with shards and powdered glass. Dozens of these fell on the Veritasian force,.

Specially treated arrows from ambushing archers created heavy smoke, disrupting communication among the Veritasians. Though Veritas didn’t notice, a new force arrived to cut off their only possible retreat.

In the smoky, shard filled chaos, a wild melee broke out between the Crystalic forces and Veritas. Much of the battle was unseen, but the end result was very clear.

The Veritasian army was annihilated to the last man. In the confusion of the battle, no one had even the chance to surrender.

Meanwhile, Khemri’s navy and forces not involved with Veritas were deployed to deal with Kehexou. Quickly meeting up with the forces of Deras Mayanas, Khemri began to strike out at the rebel Kehex led by Terias Gayanax. With the fleet loyal to him destroyed, Gayanax’ rebellion was disconnected. Khemri and Mayanas’ force stomped down on the rebellion one island at a time, until it was totally crushed. But Gayanax was not found. It is assumed that he fled, in the same guise he arrived in.

The people of Kehexou, now firmly under Mayanas’ control, reaffirmed their neutrality, and officially thanked Khemri for its aid.

Kehexou was once again officially out of the war.
(-20 Kehex Biremes, -3000 Kehex Spearmen, -1000 Khemri Swordsmen)

Things were now looking quite bad for Veritas. Its primary force was destroyed, and news of this, while the government tried to keep it quiet, was a rallying point for Veritasian Pacifists and even neutral Veritasians who were both sick of the war and afraid for their nation’s safety.

Meanwhile, the Crystal Ridge Alliance forces (CRA from now on) retook Netsihasko in a quick battle.
(-1000 Khemri Swordsmen, -1000 Urban Militia, -2 War Towers)

They now began to push their counteroffensive. Naval and land bombardment of Delhi began. Things were now looking very bad for Veritas.

But the harshest strike to fall upon Veritas did not come from the CRA. It was later thought of by some as the greatest treachery of the war, by others as a servant slaying its master to stop his evil, by some as a small nation doing what it thought was right. It was totally unexpected.

It was from Emor.

For years, ever since the Emoran war, these people had been angry at Veritas. They believed, probably correctly, that it was Veritas’ poorly-considered missionary efforts that had angered the Bladeists to attacking. Some say this anger even goes back as far as the peaceful invasion of their country by Veritas shortly after the Zibonese conquest.

When peace was made, it was the Bladeists who showed them mercy. So they began to, strangely enough, bond to and befriend its former enemies.

For this and many other reasons, Emor had been drifting further and further away from Veritas recently. This was officially recognized when the Emoran government officially recognized the Path of the One, a Oneist sect, as its religion.

And when the war resumed and Emor was called upon to send its men to faraway lands to fight and die, Emor had had enough. It sent no fleet or forces, and Veritas left without them.

While Veritas and Khemri fought, Emor and the Bladeists acted. A large Emoran naval force was sent into Veritas. They were let into the harbour, the people there assuming that this was the allied Emoran force, simply arrived late.

History would prove them incorrect.

A major force of Emorans and Bladeists took the Veritasian guards at the harbour by surprise, and quickly stormed the governmental buildings there, capturing the entirety of the Assemblum Popularum Veritasum. Here, Lord Aramus the Thirteenth, who personally led the force, made his speech.

Note: I’m too lazy to fix TerrisH’s typos. I did not write this.

TerrisH said:
Lord Armus The Thirteenths's Speech To The Assumable Of Vertis.
Transcribed And Sent To Every Nation Involved In The War.
THESE ARE THE WORDS OF LORD AMARUS XIII, OF THE HOUSE OF AMARUS!

Today, I stand before those of you who live. I have abandoned my mantle of leadership, and have tossed it from my line. No longer shall the House of Armus rule Emor, instead the House of Alaice, which diverged from our House five generations ago, will rule.

And they play no part in the path we took today. Place no blame. For this act, this betrayal, is the final act of the House of Armus. For today, when I die, right after I behead the last of you cursed souls, my House dies along with you. for I have no children, no sons, nor no daughters.

For today, the City of Vertis has fallen to me. With my allies the Swade and the Myocaca, I have betrayed you. My army sailed into this City, and captured this Assumable, so I can tell you of your sins. And of the words that the One delivered to Lady Alaice the Fifth.

Vertis has Sinned. It has abandoned the Three Maximums of the One. Order. Light. TRUTH.

It has abandoned the path to Order, only the Chaos of war. While war, when it is just, can bring order to chaos. But when Order fights Order, only chaos can result. It seeks power, land, and vengeance for slights imagined. It seeks war for the sake of war. Even when it's people cry out for peace, it invents a cause in an attempt to enrage them.

It has abbandoned the Light, and it has abandoned the Truth. I have in my hand, a letter from the Speaker of this Assumable, concerning it's attempt to enrage its poulous. BY KILLING A HIGH ELDER. They attempt to frame Khemr for this action. This was what decided. And this is what condemned you. Rulers of the other nations. Deciders of this world. Do not blame the people of Vertis. Spare them. Shelter them from this corrupt mockery of a government. Do not punish them for faithfully serving the One. They did not know the betrayal their government laid upon them. They did not know of their LIES. People of Vertis, rebel. For your government no longer trust you. They only seek to control you through fear, lies, and your own anger. Seek shelter in the nations that march to topple this corruption, and bring peace to you. For you government has abandoned the Light of the One, and seek to lead you into the One's shadow, ELDOS. They seek to impose their message, THEIR view, not the One's, upon their follower, and ignores the messages of the other Paths Of The One.

I now you will condemn me for what I do today, for I to have sinned. I abandoned the Truth myself in order to behead this beast. I brought my ship to Vertis, the armies of the Swade and the Myocaca hidden in our holds. Together with them, I put my fleet into port here at Vertis, to resupply. Or so I said. Instead, the moment the last ship was docked, the invasion was launched. Supprissed, the gaurds still fought a noble battle. But in the end, Vertis was taken. And now I stand before you, ready to die with you. Each of you with Myocaca or Swade sword to your neck. MOREN itself to my own, weilded by the last decendent of it's forger, Lutineit Korta Harkin De Quim.

As I prepare to die, I ask the people of Vertis to not blame my troops, nor Lutineit Quim. Once I am dead, they will defend the city of Vertis, form the Vengeance of other nations, and the Vengeance of the Stratikrator. For he is the Heart of this Darkness. Until this war is over, they will stand. Then you may rebuild from this city. You may chose to join Emor, or you may chose to recreate Vertis.

But remember this. Emor will not stand for this corruption of the Path Of The One again. Listen to him, and worship him, and remember he bears many names. For his faith is not prove true through words, but through actions.

Halios Order.
Halios Truth.
Halios Light.

The Assemblum was then slaughtered.

Rioting broke out in the streets of Veritas. All those who could bear arms fought their occupiers. But they were defeated. To Aramus’ surprise, he was not killed. While people were terrified and infuriated by occupation, the Pacifists calmed them, knowing that violent resistance could do nothing but harm the people and the city.

Myocaca and Swade forces were then sent onto the mainland, making beachheads and advancing them. CRA forces captured Delhi and plunged into Veritas proper.

As Veritas collapsed, Davarian aid came. But it was not enough. The tidal wave that was the CRA, and the unexpected betrayal by Emor were too much for the overstretched nation. Parts of it collapsed into chaos, and although a new assemblum was set up in Kallamas, it was too late. All of Veritas was occupied south of the Kalmar river. It’s people have fought back, but not enough to stop the might of the occupiers.

Davarian aid, and some from Tristaria, is all that keeps the remenants of Veritas unoccupied. But the CRA has not pressed on to wipe out the last northern territories of Veritas. It is stretched almost too far, and should not risk more.

In the end, Veritas’ defeat came from primarily one thing. Overoptimism. They were overoptimistic on the support the militarist Terias Gayanax would have among the relatively peaceful Kehexou, overoptimistic in the final size of their combined army, overoptimistic on the effects a Nurmaferi rebellion would have (None), overoptimistic in their belief that the Khemri populace would welcome them and a republican government, overoptimistic in the gullibility of Khemri and overoptimistic in believing that no seeds of treachery existed within their alliance.

With much of the nation occupied, what will the future hold? Will Khemri attempt to destroy Veritas utterly, or will it reinstate the nation, in a weakened state? It is impossible to predict.

Oh, and the Swades completed the Bronze God, a statue coated with bronze representing the Blademaster. This colossal construct is yet unmatched in size and grandeur. But nobody other than the Bladeists really noticed.
