CTIV-9: The Academians

Looking good guys, am very much enjoying following this SG. However, I'm seriously considering boycotting the CTIV-series considering Chrth's SECOND betrayal of the True Chaos: first in the SGOTM, and now in joining JOE-04 (which, by the way, will NEVER be counted as Chaos 4)!

Could have posted this in the JOE-04 thread, but I wanted to hit Chrth in his heart:mischief:. Besides, JOE's thread has a weird smell.

Turn 0 -- 1900 AD

We need troops. Stat.
Euclid: Research > Infantry
Francis Bacon: Wealth > Infantry
Zu Chongzhi: Wealth > Artillery

We need techs to win the game. Hey, I like the looks of this:
ctiv9vfy1.jpg

Cross off another one. We now have a tech lead (I don't care about Communism).

I find a paired worker with moves left, start working on a well.

Everything else looks good. I hit ENTER.

Turn 1 -- 1902 AD

ctiv9wor1.jpg

Mansa gets silly.

ctiv9xuo7.jpg

This is tempting ... however, I like HC being in a war. Last thing I want to do is get us distracted from our goal.

Galileo: Barracks > Grocer

Turn 2 -- 1904 AD

Euclid: Infantry > Infantry

Mansa adopts Theocracy. :hmm:

Turn 3 -- 1906 AD

ctiv9ydj9.jpg

Industrialism comes in. I go for Plastics (due in 8) next so that there's a time gap between 3 Gorges Build and Space Elevator.

You see this coming, right?
Zu Chongzhi: Artillery > Tank
Francis Bacon: Infantry > Tank
Keppler: Infantry > Artillery (slow builder)

The Bad News first: We lost our Ivory deals.
The Good News: We have Aluminum, and it's hooked up  Apollo due in 9.

Turn 4 -- 1908 AD

Euclid: Infantry > Tank
Galileo: Grocer > Bank

:coffee:

Great Person due next turn in Francis Bacon:
ctiv9zfh3.jpg

Place your bets!

Turn 5 -- 1910 AD

Broadway comes in! Nappy wants to trade for a Hit Musical even before I get the Wonder Movie. :shake:

Ptah: Broadway > Tank

A couple of trades:

ctiv9aaaf7.jpg

ctiv9abzo2.jpg

And we get Thespis in Francis Bacon ... he's a Great Artist. He'll provide research towards Radio. I don't do anything with him yet, although I do send him to Zu Chongzhi in case we want to do a Great Work.

Turn 6 -- 1912 AD

Zu Chongzhi: Tank > Marine

:coffee:

Turn 7 -- 1914 AD

Ptah: Tank > Tank
Francis Bacon: Tank > Destroyer
Euclid: Tank > Tank

I drop science to 90%, Plastics still due in 4.

Turn 8 -- 1916 AD

Keppler: Artillery > Marine

Nappy starts a Golden Age.

Turn 9 -- 1918 AD

ctiv9ackn2.jpg

Nappy demands 230 Gold. I reject it. He runs away with his tail between his legs.

FDR wants us to fight the Incans ... I decide against it.

Ptah: Tank > Marine
Zu Chongzhi: Marine > Tank
Euclid: Tank > Destroyer
Galileo: Bank > Battleship

HC now has Industrialism.

Turn 10 -- 1920 AD

HC captures Seattle!

Ptah: Marine > Coal Plant (should've done this last turn) ... the Coal Plant is due in 2, Plastics is due in 1, Ptah should build 3 Gorges when the Coal Plant is built (the Coal Plant will cause it to Stagnate but won't starve it).

Workers are railing the country, at this point making sure all cities and borders are easily reached.

We're doing better in Power but we still have a ways to go.
ctiv9adjo4.jpg

Apollo is due in 2 turns. Good luck.

Here's the Save:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/CTIV-9_AD-1920.Civ4SavedGame

ROSTER
ChrTh -- Just Went!
Ruff_Hi -- UP!
Maquis -- On Deck!
Scowler
GreyFox
JesusOnEez

Tech Situation:
Combustion
Radio
Industrialism
Plastics (3 Gorges) -- due in 1
Computers > Robotics (Space Elevator)

I would no longer trade with HC either. And don't forget the Great Artist (save for Golden Age, I'm thinking).

got it - might play on train tomorrow morning (or chaos II!)

Also, blame Rex for renaming it to Chaos IV. I never claimed to be official...I just claimed to steal the idea. :p

A fun round of pressing enter, making some pre-defined tech selections and (almost pre-defined) build selections. My building was a collection of military mixed in with space parts.

Question - why are we building the 3G dam if most of our cities all ready have power? I thought that coal plants (and similar) don't provide any hammer multiple, they just provide power to the factories and, thus, up the factories hammer multiple. Is that correct? If so, why all the coal plants when we were planning to build the 3G Dam?

Keeping that artist for a Golden Age is a good idea. We just need one more non-Artist GP to kick one off.

Some (most) cities will have a happiness issue if we swap away from Hed Rule. We should try and correct this prior to swapping civics to cash rush items. I started Nashville (Rock & Roll) but we can also build temples and maybe think about the culture slider.

Things that the log doesn't give you ...
  • 1922 - Roosevelt asks for Open Borders - NO (sure to be someone's worst enemy!)
  • 1926 - Mansa asks us to stop trading with the French - NO
(don't need another -ve re France and can afford the -ve re Mansa)
  • 1927 - Engineer born in Athens
  • 1928 - Napoleon askes me something but my screenshot just has the result "I suppose you know best"
wonder what he actually asked me about?
  • 1928 - Alex askes us to declare war on Malinese - no, not today, thankyou
Pictures from the end of my turn ...

The tech situation - no trading with Huayna OR Mansa!
CTIV-9-sc-020.jpg

The Power Situation - we will never catch Huayna, better keep on his good side
CTIV-9-sc-021.jpg

Our cities ... when Ptah finishes the useless(!) 3G Dam, it should crank up on Engineers so that we pop a Great Engineer so that we can rush the Elevator. It might also pay to swap to Pacifism.

And here is my parting comment and something to dwell on ...
CTIV-9-sc-019.jpg

By the end of my set - he has completed 3 casings (about 1 every two turns!). Also, Mensa has now completed the Appollo Program too.

hmmn - the logger doesn't show starts on space ship parts - something for me to debug!

Why 3 Gorges? 2 reasons:

1) We have health problems. Eliminating the Coal Plant health penalty is a good idea.
2) AI denial. HC can already outproduce us. The last thing we want is for him to get 3 Gorges.

Just an update... still playing. I'm taking this one slow. Lots going on!

War trumpets sounded on turn 2! Nappy declares on us... and it is not a phony war. Thankfully for us he's pretty outdated with his armies...

I will be finishing up later today and will get the full turnset out.

Nappy declared war? :hmm: That's a problem. We don't want the War Weariness, that's for sure, but we don't want to take/raze any of his cities because of the variant rules and because it'd give HC possibly another city site. Maybe a couple destroyers tearing up nets will get him to make peace?

Ugh, do you really want to manage cities halfway around the world? I shudder to think what any cities would do to our maintenance costs. Plus Nappy has a pretty tight continent, any city we take would be flipped easily.

lurker's comment: If I understand war weariness correctly, you will not accumulate any as long as your troops stay within your borders. If all of the fighting stays on your land, the people are happy. :crazyeye: You only get war weariness when the troops leave your borders and start shedding blood in a far away land ...

:hmm: ... does that include sending a destroyer to sink approaching transports?

Sorry, CT, I've told you everything that I know about the subject. :) I assume that you are wondering if you attack the AI in neutral waters rather than your own territorial waters if it will count against you. Frankly, I don't know.

Ok, I've finished my turns. Sorry for the delay again, but today was a busy day in RL. I am going to highlight a few points, and will upload a proper turnset later.

As I said, Nappy declares on us on my second turn. hmmm... so who can I bring in to help?

Mali is at war with Persia... so they "have enough on their hands"
HC is at war with America... hmm... so at this point everyone is at war at this point. Hopefully this will help to slow the AIs down a bit on the spaceship...

Anyways, Nappy comes in with a huge stack of frigates, destroyers, and 5 transports full of troops! Well, thankfully they are outdated troops (mainly Grenaders and Knights).

He manages to land the stack just south of Socrates. I spend a couple turns using our tanks to take out the whole stack. No harm done on the ground.

The seas are a different story. We had 3 Destroyers (plus one frigate I upgraded) which have been decimated by Nappy's navy. I believe he had 6 Destoryers that came, plus the frigates & Transports. I took out a couple, but he's managed to rip up all our sea resources on the west coast. A couple Battleships are being built in west coast towns.

Other notes:

We did build 3 gorges. Not that it seems to be all that important now.
Computers learned, Robotics chose next, as that will allow us to build the elevator. HC now has Flight, but that is all (that I can see). He doesn't have computers yet. Hopefully we'll stay up on him in techs, which shouldn't be coming quite so fast as long as he's at war with Roosey.

Conroe is right, we have no WW right now, as all fighting as been within our cultural borders. We're nowhere near being able to mount any kind of offensive, as we have no navy left to speak of. Perhaps we can find a way to sue for peace in a few turns... Nappy's lost overr 20 units to us, so I imagine WW is hurting him.

Ok, the save. I'll add a little more detail in the morning, including pictures.

I'll wait a few more hours before playing, in case there is anything Maquis (or anybody else) wants to add. Otherwise, consider this a "got it".
