Update 7
Year 176 A.R.
Nothing noteworthy happens in the kingdom of Duskmist, but I mention it anyway because their leader has a cool avatar. (Note: the previous sentence was written six months ago.)
The undead overrun Bersia. (-1 Bersia. -2000 undead warriors, +20 000 usable corpses.) A few of the most powerful mages and elite warriors have barricaded themselves in the ex-royal palace. They keep constant vigil and have stayed safe by the simple expedient of smashybreaking and trogdorburninating every skeleton or zombie to step over the threshhold. So far they have held out for two years and show no sign of slacking.
Nearby, a small naval expedition from Iceland arrived, looked for Bersians, found none, and ran screaming away from the undead. One of the Air Elementals with them travelled back with word of the event, but the Icelandic explorers appear to be stuck in the Bersian palace.
Some undead travel east, onto the next continent. (Gladinia, being the only PC nation there now, has the honor of naming it, unless Swiss Bezerker wants to call it a discovery.) Kenyata begins building border fortifications on their western border in anticipation of the undead assault.
With the demise of Rolf Leonhard, may his name live forever, the invasion of the Cammane City-States grinds to halt. With the recent invasion of House Leonhard by The Church, the Speaker for the Union convinces House Leonhard to accept a peace treaty and their vassalage. (Lots of territory, 2 eco points and 1 eco point per turn from CCS to HL.)
The Church's invasion, meanwhile, continues apace. Patriarch Theodore has issued a new form of currency, letters of credit, that he issues to the common people, allowing the army to be paid in treasure. Between this and the healing power of the Bishops, they make substantial inroads against the tired troops returning from the northwest front, and slightly less substantial progress towards the Leonhardic capital. (Church -400 infantry, -1 Bishop, -3 Holy Knights. Leonhard -700 infantry, -4 Beholders, -1 Dark Mage.)
And in the southeast of House Leonhard, a few rebels break away, feeling neglected by the rest of the country. Since it was an unproductive area anyway, the leadership honestly doesn't care, and feels that they can be left to fend for themselves, but probably they should be stopped for the good of national morale. (Leonhard -10000 population)
The Dangal Confluence and Akratia continue their decline. (-1 tech and economy level to both). They appear to be regressing rather rapidly, throwing off all ambition to build an empire.
Iceland expands onto the northern continent, where it gains contact with Kenyata, a peaceful nation of farmers and druids.
The Blood Elves half-heartedly continue building their temple.
Zhiki has finished fortifying its northern border and begins fortifying its coast.
SPOTLIGHT: THE OLYMPIAN WAR
NEPTUNE! bellowed Zeus. IS EVERYTHING PREPARED?
Yes, Almighty Zeus. The weather is quiet, the wind is with us, and the currents go well. We can leave at any time.
GOOD! ARES, HOW ARE THE FORTIFICATIONS?
Barely holding, Zeus! Only a few Titans remain, and our troops are wounded.
DRAW BACK, THEN. LET THE TITANS RAGE. GO YOU WITH THEM. I SUPPOSE THIS WILL BE MY LAST COMMAND TO YOU FOR A WHILE, LOVER OF WAR...
Zeus paused for dramatic effect. Rearing twenty feet tall, he grasped a thunderbolt our of thin air, clenched his fist around it until the air hummed with pent-up power, then...
BURN THE CITY!
With that, he threw the thunderbolt into what had once been the grandest building among all the Fae.
HUMANS, ONTO THE SHIPS! Zeus ordered. ARES, MAKE YOUR WAY TO OLYMPUS ALPHA. I WILL SEE YOU THERE IN A MONTH.
Wounded, groaning, some with limbs severed, some with gaping wounds, but all with grim smiles, the human troops of Olympia staggered onto the fleet that Neptune was guiding. Meanwhile, Ares let out a savage cry of joy and ran into battle. Over the next few weeks, he and the sole surviving Titan hacked their way through Fae lands.
The city of Wildgrove was utterly destroyed, and the holocaust* damaged the land for hundreds of miles around. The Black Fae fight now out of bitterness and hatred, without leadership, and they clearly intend to destroy as many Olympians as they can before dying.
(Olympus -7 Titans (you may make a new unit), -800 infantry, -5 Priests, +1 eco point from pillaging)
(Black Fae -900 infantry, -15 Chanters, -12 Sprites, -30 000 population, +30 000 militia, +1 bleak future)
*The word 'holocaust' originally meant something completely destroyed by fire.
Novoria finishes its secession from the Techno Union, which appears to have stagnated badly. (+1 Novoria. Techno Union -1 Culture.)
New HoweveryouspellthatnationthatClericiscontrolling continues to expand, but the inclusion of so many new territories leads to a lack of national feeling as so many different groups are forced under the rule of New It. (-1 Culture)
Seleucia Novus flourishes as their leader allows his people to begin experimenting with democracy. Their self-governance motivates them to great heights. (+1 eco points.) However, dragons have recently begun to be sighted again on the borders, and the people prefer to argue their own issues than to expand, so the nation is becoming introverted as a whole.
Rolangaregol expands southwards, coming into contact with the Orioch Nomads, who warn the People of Rol (the adjective for Rolangaregol) to stay out of their lands, a decree which will be enforced by magic.
Arkenaar continues the assimilation of Brigland. This process has now reached a phase where violent movements of rioters for independence have given way to conspiratorial plots, hidden scions of kings, and mumbling in dark corners. Meanwhie, the magocracy of Samarra continues to support the Arkenaarian royal family, who has just begun a program of technology exchange with Roddyna.
With the fall of the capital of House Telvanni, the rest of Telvanni surrenders and agrees to become a province of New Rome. The Roman Emperor declares a year of rejoicing and happy people, to be followed by some years of reconstruction and recruitment.
Nothing disastrous happens in Roddyna, but their technological exchange programs with Arkenaar and the construction of several new fortresses provides the military with a lot to learn (from). (Roddyna +1 armal training)
Orcs are once again sighted at the borders, retreating whenever they see humans. Meanwhile the new scientific discoveries of the Roddynans accrue at such a rate that they can only describe it as a new age in the history of their people. In monument to the orcslaying heroes, it is called the Heroic Age. (Roddyna reaches 6 science, enters next age, science counter reset)
However, the large army of the Roddynans is proving unsustainable. While it is certainly causing the Orcs to flee in terror, it also requires more food and upkeep than is being produced, and as such is gnawing at the reserves that have been stored up. (Increase Agriculture to fix the problem)
Map in next post. After the map, you may post complaints and whatnot.
