Part Four
With the Senate’s decision to deal with the northern barbarian threat, Consular Kan immediately assigned Captainus the duty of taking Arretium. The general had already received his first taste of battle four years previously, and Kan was sure he desired to take the fight further.
Arretium was hardly a challenge though. Just one weak unit of barbarian spearmen defended the city - the walls provided more of a challenge to Captainus’s forces! Breaking through these meant that one Hastati unit was all that it took to wipe out enemy resistance.
Battering down the walls of Arretium
Despite the protests of Senator Ironman, who did not wish to push out beyond Arretium, Consular Kan decided to break from his traditionalist values and press the attack. There was one other barbarian city to Rome’s north - Ariminum - and it too was weakly defended. He sent General Killyouallus to take some of Captain’s forces, and launch an assault on the city. After all, bringing such barbarous tribes under Roman control could only be good for the Republic.
To the south, General Tillus maintained the siege of Paestum, hoping to starve the defenders into surrender. In 274 BC then, both his siege and Killyouallus’ assault brought two city’s under Rome’s control. Central Italy was united, and Kan was confident that he could declare the Roman Republic a true power.
The Republic
Domestically, things remained as healthy as ever. New trading posts were being constructed along the Adriatic, while maps were bought from Illyria. Gaul remained a friend, while the Greeks - while technically Rome’s enemy - were doing nothing to threaten the fledgling nation. It had been a glorious six years…
