Heart of the Republic - A Rome: Total War AAR
Part Six
Nearly a year after General Tillus death, Thrawnus stood on the same battlefield near Tarentum. He was not yet used to commanding armies, but he had been the only General in the vicinity with an army large enough to strike back. In the past year the Senate had been outraged at the news of the Greek victory and Tillus death. The consular had even declared General Pyrrhus an Enemy of Rome. His death was to come at all costs - nothing was to stand in the way.
It was because of this that Thrawnus had been given special orders. His army, numbering 2000 strong and vastly outnumbering the Greek forces, had only two primary goals - to kill Pyrrhus and his unit of elephants. Everything else - including victory on the battlefield - was secondary. That said, Thrawnus was not one to so easily throw away a battle for the sake of one man. He had a personal objective - to show that he too could be a General as great as Tillus.
His army then, was stronger and more dug in than Tillus forces the year before. He had also demanded that several veteran units of the previous battle be part of his force. Their memories of the first battle were to aid Thrawnus own battle strategy.
As such, his army was not only more tightly packed, but also designed for each unit - especially the cavalry - to support the other. In addition, he also deployed two infantry divisions into the forests ahead. They were doomed, but it was hoped that they would distract and separate Pyrrhus forces enough to allow the Roman cavalry to attack any straggler units. It worked perfectly.
The Greeks in flight
While losses were light in this early phase, when the dreaded war elephants smashed into the left flank there were many casualties. However many units - especially those who had previously served under Tillus, suddenly sprung into action, focusing what weapons they had on the creatures. Under a hail of spears and being attacked by swords and on horseback, the elephants quickly succumbed to terror and tried to retreat. They were not allowed to.
Pyrrhus meanwhile, flung his own unit into the central lines, hoping to take advantage of the confusion on the left flank. The Roman soldiers held their ground though, and refused to take a step back. Two additional Hastati units surrounded Pyrrhus troops and wiped them out. The great general was dead.
There was now no other course of action for Thrawnus other than to press the attack, and as such all divisions were ordered to push forward towards Tarentum. The cavalry charged ahead, slaughtering all Greeks as they tried to escape. By the end of the day the enemy army had been virtually wiped out. Tillus had been avenged, and the Republic had regained its honour
