True Multitreaded semi succession game, Immortal or deity.

Ok let's exchange turn reports! I'm in, although I'd only experiment with Immortal Saladin (Deity is just too random for me, YES I have beaten Deity before, but that was on a duel map with a quechua rush. That kind of win doesn't really count, so I'm a Monarch player).

I roll out start, lets games begin!

First round is 50 turns, expected end time 2000 BC.

I'll have a go too. I can win most times on Emperor so its about time to move up a level. But I have never played Immortal so this will be quite a challenge. Looking forward to learning from you all.

One question for those who play at Diety: when can you expect the human barbs to appear and when do they start intruding in your borders?

Wellcome.
Barbs? Not entirelly sure, but useally you can build worker + a bit more befor barbs will show up.

Please, use spoilers Tags in your reports untill we move to next round.

Hmm... just a question, Mutineer, will you roll a single Immortal start for all of us, or do we each start a new Immortal game?

We all start from same game and game was allredy rolled out, Save in first post.
It is deity, not immortal.

Ok I absoultely hate the extremely brutal and challenging starting area. :D
I personally think this is hardly winnable even on Monarch.

Ok, Hemmed in and with Alex as a neighbor!
Unfortunately, Alex took my ideal city spot near his empire.
Extremely poor sites for further cites. Again, I don't like this place.
I founded Buddhism while building initial warriors.
Didn't scout to the right side yet.
I gambled on horses seeing the cows on the west side and I got it.
I have one worker and will be roading up the horses soon for a chariot rush.
Also going for writing early to improve science.

I played save to 2000 BC the same time I roll it out, but I did not have time to post it. Now I forgot what and how I did, lots of it.

So, sorry for short report.

spoiler

Well, We got very advantageous start.

Gold and furs, 2 pre calendar happiness resources. Should be relativally easy Deity game.

Found in place, I like coastal capital.
Research set to Meditation.

As I explained in some other game only 2 leaders research meditation first.
Spain and Azoka. We are spain, so we have buddism practically garanty.

Got buddism - mining-slavery-hunting-well-sailing-currently researching massonry.

I am suker for Great Ligthhouse on higth dificulty level and when I have potentially a lot of coastal cities.

Exploring wize I went north first, meat Washington and Alex.

Alex near by, move warrior back and fortify it on hill, fog busting area near me.

Alex push it backa nd I move it in my second city.

Build wize I went boat-boat- warrior-warrior
(on of my warrior die to barbarian archer, defended warrior in capital win agains archer)
Whiped worker when capital reach size 4, warrior-warrior - settler

whiped setlerr for 2.
Did not get anything remarcable from huts, exept a little gold.

One hut in position to be pop by city we will settle, guarded by barbarian warrior.
WE fog busting all our area.

I found Barselona on hill to have some safety from Alex and to work gold.

Here is the 2000CB save. First attempt on anything above Emperor. Boy I have some learning to do! :p

Summary:

4000 Settled in place. Workboat, Mining. 40g from hut, met Alex's scout.
3480 Size 2, workboat completed, start worker. Researching BW.
3080 BW in, go for Hunting. Two potential copper city sites, one near Alex, the other far off in the trundra. Worker built, start warrior. Revolt to slavery.
2840 Warrior, begin settler. City now size three. Hunting done, research The Wheel. Later met Ghandi
2600 2 Barb warriors and 1 Barb archers arrive on borders. We have one warrior in Madrid so interupt settler build for another warrior.
2560 All 3 barbs enter our borders! Never happens this early in Emperor! Another barb archer also on borders. Rush warrior. Start researching Archery.
2280 Main barbarian onslaught over. Our mine was pillaged and we lost two warriors. 2 chops and a pop rush went into military  . Resume settler build.
2280 Barb city founded near Madrid. Meet Washington.
2160 Stonehenge build in a distant land. Rush settler for 1 pop. I want to get the pigs/gold/copper site near Alex. Pottery being researched.
2000 Barcelona founded, begin obelisk to bring in copper and pigs. Pottery researched, 3 turns of AH done.

Altogether we killed 5 barb warriors and 3 barb archers while losing 2 warriors. I have never encounted this much barb activity so early at Emperor. This is going to be a steep learning curve. I should have build a few warriors for pickets earlier.

Interesting start...

Spoiler :

When playing best ball someone has to go for the home run off the tee, so I'm going to try and pull a Civil Service slingshot with Academy. The starting location is very strong and so this tactic should work out well if successful. We've got happiness in Fur and as Expansive we have health. The Clams with Fishing will allow for a fast growth curve.

Hut pops gold and I settle on spot. I start a Workboat while working the forest Fur. When it completes I switch to the Clams and start a second Workboat. This is interrupted when my wandering Warrior pops this:

civ4screenshot0023pk7.jpg

So that sucked and I had to insert a Warrior in the build queue. My research had gone Mediation (nailed the religion) then Hunting with a detour to Archery due to those Warriors. After the second Workboat completed I built three Archers and a Chariot. Yes Chariot. I followed Archery with Animal Husbandry to open Writing. When Horses popped up I took a detour to The Wheel which I needed anyway to hook up the Fur. After The Wheel I researched Writing and it completed when the Chariot did. The next build was a Library and the next tech was Priesthood, neither of which have completed. Spain:

Here is a zoom in of the capital:

civ4screenshot0026cs7.jpg

Doesn't look good at 2000 B.C. I basically need to finish the Library and The Oracle in the next 500 or so years. On the bright side the next border pop will pull Marble within reach, I might be taking a detour to Masonry (prior to finishing Priesthood) since this looks to be more Hammer limited than Commerce limited. I'll run the numbers before making that decision. I don't see success as likely and I'll probaby be borrowing someone's save for round three ;)

Oh, BTW Alex showed up early he is nearby.

Very interesting start.

Spoiler :

My initial start was workboat first, while working the furs forest tile and researching meditation. I was debating over whether to work the crabs tile while researching meditation to cut 1 turn off it, but decided against it. If I miss religion by 1 turn because of this, I will be pissed :p.

[
Civ4ScreenShot0054-1.jpg

Fur, gold, and if we get religion basically eliminates happiness concerns for the early game. This is a very strong start overall since we are also expansive so dont have to worry abotu health either. First hut gave me 51 gold, then second hut gives me wheel. :goodjob:

Civ4ScreenShot0055.jpg

My luck ran out eventually, because third hut in the east gave me hostile barbarians, and my warrior was killed. 3360, founded buddhism luckily. After meditation, I decided to go after hunting and set Madrid to grow to size 2 and then build a worker. I got hunting in 3360, after which I decided to go archery. I think its always best to play safe on deity instead of straight to one of the techs which has to reveal a strategic resource. I had almost no exploration but alex's and gandhi both meet me around 3280... from the north. Since we had some pretty crap land to our north, I decided that first city is best going in the east even though its alot of tundra, there is a pig/fish city and a cow city, so I set research on Animal Husbandry after archery. AH reveals horses right next to madrid..

Civ4ScreenShot0067.jpg

After AH, I went mining for the gold. Also unfortunately gandhi founds judiasm and converts. The barbarians start thier attack in 2580, sooner then I was expecting, I had 0 military at that point...

Civ4ScreenShot0070.jpg

I had to starve madrid to rush a couple of archers ASAP. I got mining in 2440 BC and stonehenge was build same turn. Met washington in 2360 who founded Hinduism. So either this is a pangeae or all the civs on our continent have founded a religion, which isnt too great for diplomacy... Atleast we have only met 1 aggresive civ so far.. In 2360, I see first sign of alex's border, its looks as if we are going to be trapped in our little peninsula for a while.

Civ4ScreenShot0078.jpg

I decided to make a detour to research bronze working around the time my settler was half-way done so I could whip it. So here is situation in 2000 BC, BW just finished, we have a copper in the east near the pig/fish city. Ive put about 4 turns of research into horseback riding, which might have been a mistake, but Ive decided to go after Horseback riding route instead of iron working because I dont think we have a iron near us, since we already have horses and copper. Heres the dotmap I made

Civ4ScreenShot0082.jpg

Im planning to do a horse archer rush on alex once I found those cities, im also debating whether to found a city to work our gold soon or whether to go military build straight and attack alex. Im leaning towards the latter.

Very interesting start.

Spoiler :
Pretty good start Qwack :goodjob:. I think if I had gotten The Wheel from a hut it would have been enough for me to get the CS slingshot, as it stands now I'd say I'm less than 20%. I'll probably play my save one more round but if it fails and you can get a good rush on Alex (heck, in that case maybe even if the CSS succeeds) your start has a lot of potential. I haven't looked at any of the others yet, hopefully we'll have a good set to choose from going forward.

Are we allowed to post thoughts on other saves yet or do we do that when everyone has played the round?

Uh...I hope so, since I already did :mischief:. I put it inside spoiler tags, of course. Once round 1 is over I will go back and edit my posts to remove the tags, hopefully everyone else does the same.

Darrell

Ok here is my thoughts on other saves so far

Spoiler :
After reading the other reports, I think I am going to stick to my own save, but steal some ideas from mutineer. Im going to swtich research to sailing and go after Great lighthouse, which will probably delay my rush by 25 or so turns, and found my first city near the gold to help maintenance for the pigs-fish whipper in the east. THe gold city can whip for 2 pop easily even with unupgraded floodplains so it will basically produce as much Horse archers as the cow city.

Darrelljs, I think it might have been safer to go oracle prophet slingshot to CS instead of academy route your going, I expect oracle to be built around 1200 BC here with gandhi in the game. I dont think you can get CoL by that time.

Godel, founding barcelona on that spot is quite good, it will be interesting to see if you can get that copper or if alex's culture takes it.

Robo Kai, I like the start area :p. Yeah the land around the capital isnt too good, but the capital itself is a beauty.

re: Qwack and saves...

I know the capital rocks, but I prefer good 2-3 cities than excellent capital.

Now, I don't know what save to pick up! I like Mutineer's second city location and improved tiles. I'm on the way to Writing (but with poorly developed tiles), and Qwack's on the way to Horseback Riding! Maybe I'll wait to check out further save options from others.

Ok have played so now I will look at how other people have done

Thoughts and Plans
Spoiler :
So initial thoughts and strategy. Settling in place is a no-brainer. It’s a strong start with 2 no calendar happy resources available which will tackle the extreme Happy Cap at these high levels.

Build Order is Workboat, Worker, Warrior then pause.

Research. Probably my most controversial as I opt not to chase a religion at all even though we are almost guaranteed Buddhism if we chase it. Reason is

1. Only research what you absolutely need. We have sufficient Happy to not be desperate for a religious happy.
2. At these levels diplomacy is key and having founded and adopted a religion we may unnecessarily irritate neighbours. If we found a religion but don’t adopt it I feel there is a better use for precious research turns at this stage of the game.
3. I want to be first to Alphabet for its trade value so need to not be distracted by Buddhism

So I research Mining, hunting Bronze working to
a) Unlock Furs
b) Get some Hammers from the Hill to the NE
c) Get into slavery quick to utilise our strong food start
d) Find Copper as I only expect to build 2 cities and one of them has to have Copper

What happened
Spoiler :
What happened.

Popped 51 gold from first Hut NW of start and was lucky to pop The Wheel from the Hut to the East and some more gold from the hut on the coast.

So where are we in 2000 BC

Researched.

Hunting, Mining, Bronze working, Animal Husbandry and Archery all of which I still feel I needed more than Buddhism. Writing in 2

Capital is doing well with both fishes, Furs and horses hooked up and gold will be hooked up soon.

A settler is on its way to found copper town in 4 turns.

Militarily we have 2 Archers and 2 Warriors and 1 worker, after next archer build another worker will be whipped in to speed up hooking up of copper then full on Axemen building.

Location of coppertown still not 100% decided as instead of Pinkdot founding on the pigs to work all 3 fish = copper is an option.

What our empire looks like
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0242.jpg

I want to move it alone, but i do want give every willing persona chance to play.

So, my attitude is: So long as you ready to play in resonable time frame and
tell as about that, it's ok.

Border line, round will never go longer then a week, I expect to move it in average in 5 days or so.

So, I give some slack but please, in interest of keeping every one interest and so people actially remember what is go on try to do it as soon as posible.
