You migth notice that I whipe a lot, but I do not whipe often.
You migth notice that I have -4 unhappiness from whipe in my capital (Or I think it was), but some come from happiness buildings.
Lets look on Markets, forges.
Whiping them actially increase your happiness.
I think my market allredy give me + 3 and will give +4 after wales with Optics, which I suspect I will be able to trade soon.
Forge give + 2,
Any other, like temples/theaters/colliseums do not have happiness cost, as they provide + 1, (I have dyes).
On other hand, it is preparation for a future war. This unhappiness will dissicipate soon, but live me happiness to Draft an army. Theatres/colliseums will provide efficient Lucture% in a future war.

On might notice that at this take new happiness resources becaming avalible, making it posible to accumulate unhappiness why have the same population cap. And there only this many tie city can work with good profit.
and we have health problem allready, not mach we can grow anyway.
Yes, I am planing to run specialists after capital whipe/build all basic infrastructure.

About politics. Alex is not actially a backstabber. In my observation he never atatck friendly and you can not bribe him to attack friendly.

Starting from pleased, you can, but who will want to bribe him to attack us? No one whith whom Alex in good terms has reason.
I bribed Alex to stop trading with Gandy and he never had open border with America, so they will not come try Alex to as.

I believe Alex has to mach on his hands rigth now, I suspect he going to attack Gandy and this stak is for this, for that Gandy's ex barbarian city.
Everyone else too far away and I most lickly will see them coming from my religious spying.

About city placement. We do not have mach land and we ned to us emaximum of resources posible.
This +6 food(with lighthouse) special resource is practically + 12 shields (With slavery)
I considered building 2 cities, one on cooper and second south of pigs. This will use max of food resources, but at the end decided on one.
If there will be any whisp of incoming attack I will be settling on cooper.
Additional word about theaters. For my next turn set I am planing to settle 6th city and build all 6 theaters to Use this supper food city to whipe Maces when troving overflow into Globe Theater. I should be able to trade for machinery soon.
Please note, I was swapping ties between Madrid and Barselona all the time, to promote maximum grow in Madrid after big whipe and other time grow Barselona for it's 2 pop whipes.

Ps: Army in No cottages game come from decrease of population and happiness penalty as useal. It is very important to learn to use Overflow.
Whiping food units (Like settlers/workers) let one convers more food to shields, if you whipe whenfor example 31 shiles left (no bonuses). Then next turnyou get 29 overflow from 2 pop whipe, +Food excess into next thin as shields. One can get Axe next turn this way, for example.

About whipping bug:

I use it, when I can. Please note, that this bug work bouth way, in rare cases it help you, in more cases it hurt you. I am glad it was fixed correctly in warlords.

Whipping bug is mostly benefit cotage economies, as it let one to convert a little food excess into a lot of shileds.
For food ritch cities whipping bug actially make it dificult to use whipe and get expected bonus to it.

Most pronounce whipping bug is in case of 25% production bonus.

As you can see, whipping in rundom moment will give you in average expected 25% bonus, but mach more often you will not get any bonus and

If food excess small one has time to manipulate city for max bonus, this making it very beneficial to cottage economies. For higth food cities it is detrimental, as I want to whipe as mach population as posible, resieving no or small bonus. As bonus increase problem reduced.

As you see in average one get it's 50% bonus.

So, fixing this bug in Warlords actially reduce micromanagment of whipe and wil make specialists, food rich cities more efficient.

I have very big beef with HOF mod. There orriginal bug "fix" was complittly idiotic. They remove overflow complittly, making slavery 1/2 as efficient, practically applying 50% at everage penalty to slavery shields.
Which idiot invented this? They just made cootage economy the only valid choice and make Civ extrimelly linear game. Or one has to micromanage eveyr whipe just to get something like his expected 30 shields for 1 unit of population.

What I allways liked about Civ is that it is not linear game.
Civ4, like any other good civ version (1,2) give tools to jump up your civ in sertan way. Way tend to be different in each age/situation.
Getting good in Civ mean to learn to leverage non linear aspects of the game.

PS: All this number are for normal speed.
 
I only crack the whip for axeman, or courthouses once I can get them. On deity, I find the key to success is getting code of laws early, and really nothing else. A strange conclusion, yes, but one I believe in.

Something is wrong with my Vanilla. It doesn't want to save screenshots (Screenshot Failed), maybe it's because I'm playing in "not fullscreen"? Anyway no much happened during my turns either...

Persisted from my save. It's probably doomed but I want to start one last war before I pick up someone else's save.

Researched Civil Service and Paper. Traded Paper for Compass and Calendar (Astronomy path).

Now have 3 axemen 1 spear and a ton of 'pults. Now building galleys for coastal defence. I would declare once I have 3-4 galleys.

EDIT, ADD: Plans other than war? Heading for Liberalism now. Gonna trade Education for Optics when it's all ready, so I can get Astro as free tech.

i was asked to try a deity challange similar to yours. It´s in the strategy forum, named:

deity level challange: standard sized continent map, speed normal

I had quite a good start, but now I´m sort of stuck and dont know how to go on (havent done something similar before, only deity games I played more or less successfully were on large or huge maps with epic speed)


Sorry for posting in your thread, but I thought that maybe one of you cracks can have a look at the last save (in this thread) and suppose what to do now since I absolutely dont know how to go on and I dont want to spoil the good start.


My two cents:

If it was a large map on epic speed I would go on and take Toki (Japan) out completely, then tech to mil. tradition, which i most times manage to get first and take out the next AI with cavallry (maybe Huy, Atztecs), later backuped with grenadiers. Then peace until modern army comes in, maybe marry Vicky (England) inbetween and then go for domination victory.

The main problem is, that I dont knwo if it will be possible to get mil. trad first on normal speed and such a small map, so maybe it is better to take on Huy right now, when i have an advantage (he hasnt macemen so far, i already could upgrade my swordsmen if i wanted and I think that right now I have a bigger army then he has).

Or should i remain in peace with the other after finishing Toki since i will have the most cities by then(about 50% more then the average AI). Will this be enough to compete in tech (on epic speed I need at least twice as much cities then the AI to keep up in tech)?

Again sorry to bother you, but i one (or maby two or maybe even three) could have a look at my last save (and even perhaps play some rounds) that would be great.

All folk that was argue with me in forums drop out with out any resonable explanation and there seems no one left playing.
 
everyone's ego prevented much needed "played another save" rounds.
It was a good idea, I hope there will be a bit more action (meaning more players, playing games from other players) in the next rounds.
 
I decided to go with Mutineer's save. This is most educational for me because it allows for direct comparison (assuming someone else adopts his save ;) ). Techwise my previous save is OK (since I have an unused GS) but Mutineer has much better infrastructure. To top it off he has an excellent candidate for Globe which will be essential for whipping an army when needed.

Spoiler :

Not very eventful round. Spent most time building infrastructure, keeping an eye on whipping bug described by Mutineer in a post above. Built no military and founded city #6 to work deer, but mainly to get 6 cities for Globe.

Research went CS-> Paper-> Education (burning 1 GS)-> Liberalism (in 8 turns). I am basically set to win the LIberalism race as no one has education yet.

I traded for Compass, Optics, Theocracy and Machinery + gold. I also made 270g from selling my WM to other civs.

Relations: Mao asked me to cancel trade with Ghandi. I declined. Later Alex went to war against Ghandi and asked me to cancel deals with him. I agreed to keep Alex friendly, since I am very vulnerable to him. I lost silk but made up for this later with whales.

GPs: I got 1 GS and will get another GP on the next turn (82% chance for GS).

In two turns my 6 theatres will be built and work can begin on Globe. If I had done things differently I would have founded the 6th city earlier to get a head start on the Globe.

There are a number of buildings which can be efficiently whipped this turn. I did not whip them though in case someone wants the save. Also, Alex just got Engineering and will trade. Eng has been available for a while but Vicky wanted an outrageous price.

There are a few resource for gpt trades I can make (e.g. deer for 6gpt with Monte). These have just become available but I will decide whether to do them in the next round.

I am not surprised you are having problems. I tried a similiar type of event in my Civ3 days, and the second run ended with the game incomplete and closed.
 
I had not planned on missing the last round and don't plan on missing this round, but RL has been kicking me in the teeth. I haven't run CIV since my last turnset in RB27. I haven't played an RB event since Epic 8. Anyway, enough whining :blush:. I'll try to play when I can but at this point I can't promise anything.
