P666-04 : Yet Another Trash Game

Vote coming up in like 10 hours, don't have time to open saves now.
Busy weekend.

Yes, I'm waiting on some more votes. I'm messaging with Cam to keep in touch.

The verdict is one more day then we close voting.

With a lot of people in the thread it could become difficult to move along sometimes, but I think this big roster will make for an interesting thread. Plenty of action.

ok my vote is away now.

OK we have enough votes. Vra hasnt voted yet but the result will not change with these votes.

Winner is..... Cam_H :cool:

It's at post #93

(can anyone tell me how to link to someone else's save?)

OK. Well the group's gone with a 'builderish' round that has basically no military in a conquest game! :)

I must say that I picked three completely different styles of games in this particular round for my votes. One, that was very similar to my own, one that was gearing for war, and one that had already made an aggressive start on the job ahead of Korea. It's a constant surprise how differently these games are played.

Mice - thanks again for doing the votes this round.

So - onwards to 125AD using Cam's game. We will be selecting the least successful game in the roster. Post games by early-morning on Saturday 'American time' if not before. Include 'spoilers' in 'spoiler' tags. Include your handle/name in your saved file. Late entries will not be considered. Cabert's game will not be included in the votes. Cabert will collect the votes after all submissions are received or the deadline is reached (whichever comes first). Etc. Etc.

Pigswill - you're a chicken! Trying to avoid the Trash Round. :nono: (I know the reason, it's OK!).

I am introducing a new player to the roster! Welcome Öjevind Lång! Paddle initiation ... :spank:

Fireworks !!

Spoiler :

I do like a Hwacha.

Boy was that confusing.

Quinn looks like Kubali, Kublai looks like Quinn, Different land colour,India's usual colour, but India's there too next door. Whew. I liked having Toku next door because at least I know who he is. Lotsa fun though.

Oracle in, construction.
Teched to pottery to start a few cottages, then currency.

After currency in, a decision, Alphabet or Monarchy. Decide on Monarchy to boost population and really work the cottages after the war.

War? Yes attack Shanghai with Hwacha Axe stack. Take it for the loss of a couple of hwachas.

Fend off one axe attack on my capital. Quinn seems to be turtling.

Monarchy in, revolt to HR

Plan;
Take Nanjing and Tainjin with existing units
Develop the wine, cottages , put archers in cities to boost population, build some units some markets until CoL, then build/whip courts.

CoL or Metal casting to get an engineer to build the GL? Either way, head for GL

I must say I hate protective archers!
And I must say I love protective archers. It just depends on which side of the battle they are! ;)

Spoiler :

Qin is annoying. RNG is annoying.

Oracle in. Construction slingshot. Rushed a settler to grab marble site.
Qin built a city really next door. I whipped some hwachas/axes and declared when I saw a settler/archer combo near Nanjing. Defeated the archer and snagged a worker. Took the two nearby cities too. Qin sent a galley. I saw myself obliged to trade for sailing and whipping a trireme. No good. The galley sank my trireme at 88% odds. I lost all my seafood at Seoul. I was lucky to have that corn around. When I reached Shangai with 3 hwachas and a medic chariot I saw about 4 archers, 3 spears and 3 axes protecting the city. I kept whipping reinforcements, but that wasn't enough, so in turn 118 I sued for peace. I got all his 110 gold, Meditation and 1 GPT. Better than keep him building units! ;)
Toku founded a city between us and marble site. I think it's a good time to declare on him with our current force (we might just need some protection on marble site) and take that city for us. Literature is 3 turns from now. We may need that marble for the GL.
Warning: Toku has Ivory (good for us) and I think he has Monarchy, so he may be beelining to Feudalism and that nasty longbows (bad for us).

We have monopoly on Alpha, Currency and Construction. I traded Maths around for Sailing + Archery and for Iron Working.

I opened borders with Genghis to get some foreign trade routes. It turns out good!

Spoiler :

Really a round of two parts - gearing up for war while not dropping 'the commerce ball', and then pulling the trigger in the last few turns.

Turn summary in spoiler;
Spoiler :

850BC: Pressed on with The Wheel to hook up resources and as a prerequisite to Pottery.

825BC: Qin settles Tianjin near Seoul.

775BC: Wheel > Pottery, The Oracle > Construction, P'yongyang > Barracks (thius city would spend the rest of the round producing a mix of units).

750BC: Seoul ~ Barracks > Hwacha pump.

I opted to go with Hunting (Spears - chaperone Hwacha stacks) and Archery (Archers - Protective trait, prerequisite for Horse Archers).

700BC: Pottery > Hunting.

650BC: Hunting > Archery.

600BC: Archery > Alphabet, Stonehenge built elsewhere.

350BC: Alphabet > Code of Laws.

175BC: Missed Confucianism by 6 turns.

75BC: Adequate SoD formed, and declare war on Qin Shi Huang.

50BC: Begin eroding the defenses of Nanjing.

25BC: Hwacha takes out a wandering Chinese (Qin) Axeman and gets Accuracy promotion.

1AD: Nanjing is taken with the loss of one Hwacha.

25AD: Begin eroding the defenses of Tianjin.

75AD: Begin eroding the defenses of Shanghai.

100AD: Tianjin is taken without loss. Trade Code of Laws around;

p66604_125ad_kublai.jpg

A very lopsided deal, but nonetheless;

p66604_125ad_asoka.jpg

Iron spotted on the outskirts of Seoul (beyond the fat-X).

125AD: Meet Mao Zedong.

In summary: Two Chinese cities taken for only one lost unit. Troops are mustering at Shanghai.

p66604_125ad_shanghai.jpg

I think that there was reasonably good scientific development, although I held back on the trades somewhat. I opted to build a Cottage on one of the Wine tiles for a super-commerce square, still leaving one for trade once we get Monarchy (already have one because P'yangyong is sitting on it). I farmed the other one, but it can later be converted into a Winery.

I seem unable to shake my Builder habits - when I had built the Oracle, I used it to discover Monarchy instead of Construction. I have made a trade agreement with Asoka, refused a right of passage agreement with Qin (the obvious enemy) twice and started to build up an army of chariots. I have also begun to build the Parthenon - bear with me! I'm still trying to get a feel for how to play this kind of game.

Edit: Started the write-up before that post lol ^

Spoiler :
Take construction with Oracle, start improving our lands and get some Hwachas out. Tech -> the wheel, pottery, alphabet, monarchy. Traded alpha to Asoka for sailing, meditation and war with Qin. Needed sailing to counter galley which was just created in Qins city, though it never actually came to my seas. Declared war of course, cba with southern city so took western one, Nanjing, then headed for Qins capital, Shanghai. Took it on last turn. To sum it up, we now have some City Raider Hwachas and Axes and one chariot, one axe in each city to guard. Qin has one city somewhere north and the southern city, which should be piece of cake to conquer.

Aaaand one bad thing, I accidentally played one extra turn.. I hope it's okay.
Here's some screenies:

civ4screenshot0010hk9.jpg

civ4screenshot0013ys9.jpg

There was 4 axes, 3-4 archers, 2 spears, 2 workers defending. Didn't lose much in attack, I love Hwachas retreat ability! :p
