I can capture Colonial workers now for sure, but why not Civil Engineers?
Anyways, I started a new long game (the last was short) and am turn 73 as the US. I quickly absorbed Mexico and Central America, as usual. Rather than turn north to Canada, though, I looked south at Cuba, and the ailing Spanish.
Why ailing? A little before, France declarec on Spain, and took all of their European cities except Madrid, which is landlocked. So they could no longer build ships.
War was declared, and Cuba was quickly taken entirely, along with the natives. I also spawned a leader here. I swiped San Juan easily, without the army. To work it out a bit, I also declared on Hispaniola and wiped them out in 3 turns.
I looked towards the phillipines- I took Guam, and it was completely undefended! As soon as my ships were in sight, it emptied out. (???) Manila fell soon after, and I wiped out the Phillipine Natives on my way to the other Spanish city on that island, also completely undefended. (On a side note, why are the the Native cities always so much better defended than the colonies?)
The spanish island to the immediate north fell quickly, as did that Princess Puerta cuty. And that just about did it for the Spanish, their only city left being the completely surrounded and landlocked Madrid.
I then started gearing up for a big European invasion. I planned to take Azores Island, then the rest of Portugal in Europe, and finish Spain for posteritys sake. But then, the British started to nose around.
The Brits had always sent ships through my territorial waters, and I hadn't really minded. But then, 8 Mounties crossed our borders by Seattle. They had to be invading me- there was no place else to go! I told them to leave, and they declared. Europe will have to wait.
I quickly kill the Calv, and my army and artillery move across the border to Ottowa. I bombard, and kill the remaining soldiers with a mixture of the Army (with Infrantry, btw), regular infantry, and cavs.
Luckily I had just taken the last Spanish city in the Phillipines a few turns before, so my whole army was still there. I have troops right next to a English city there, and when that falls, I will jump across to their city on mainland Asia (the one right below french Saigon). I will maybe take Hong Kong, too, but after that will have to wait for reinforcements because most of my force is guarding citys, and the Phillipines are a bit slow in producing new units.
So, my goal is to take as a lot of Canada, Kingston, New Belize, and some Asia cities from the British to knock them down a notch. A lot to do, but I think I can handle it.
In VP right now, I am second only to France, with GB a close third. Russia has also emerged as a real power so far, and they are currently at war with China, and I have not seen any cities trade hands. Germany and Britian had a war earlier, but I did not see any cities change hands.
Naval Superiority has been a real help so far. I took Latin America, the Carribeans and the Phillipines with solely naval bombardment. I expect artillery to come into more use now, though, because a lot of Canadian cities are landlocked. They already helped with Ottawa.
