Get Rid of :pat: !

I've never seen this one before. But it's quite cute. Certainly if there is an emoticon to get rid of more than the others, it's the rolling eyes one.

Better yet, get rid of all emotions.

They are childish.

Yeah, good luck with that.

Emoticons, however, are pointless. Just another device to destroy people's ability to express themselves in words.

Expressing oneself and being understood in words is difficult when no facial expression or vocal intonation can be detected.

That doesn't make it difficult - it just means doing it in a different way.

How exactly do you think mood can be properly registered over the internet without emoticons, graphic ones or otherwise?

I like rolleyes. It's usage tells me a lot about the poster who used it.

I disagree, emoticons are quite useful. A properly used smilie can really augment a post.

An example that comes to mind is here:

Keep it

I don't see it being any worse than :ar15::hammer2::mwaha::rolleyes::coffee:

They help express what text cannot....especially :mwaha::mwaha::mwaha::mwaha:

The same way it can in books, magazines, and all the other kinds of writing that have been around for years, of course - by using words! I never use emoticons and I don't think I've ever had any problems conveying mood.

Still, I don't want to thread jack, so best to leave this argument for another day.

There is nothing wrong with some laziness by using emoticons as another element to incorporate on how to communicate with others by writing.

I inhale. I am laughing out loud at Monty Python. I exhale. Now I am smiling. I inhale. Now I am typing out my actinos wondering if VX350 would prefer everyone to- I exhale- type out what they are donig then instead of using - I inhale- a simple emote taht takes up only a - I exhale- bit of space. I inhale.

(Kind of joking here but I am asking a question still)

Yes. the emoticon is used by very elderly members of the forums (like, say, Padma), towards anyone who is signifantly younger, by at least three decades (which would be all the other 19,999 forum users)

Padma is old?

Why am I always the last to know?
