staznesIX: The Tides of Tyranny

BTM, keep your mouth shut about things you know nothing about. For your information, my mother, with whom I am much closer than the vast majority of people my age, had an ovarian cancer scare (again) and I was in and out of hospitals for the past couple weeks. At one point I had an emotional breakdown and almost ended up in the ER myself. And at the same time I had two APs (one for which I did only self-study). So please, don't lecture. If Azale is willing to wait and accept my orders, G-d bless him, but if he decides that he needs to go forward and it is simply too late for my orders to be included, then that is fine, he will do what he has to do.

EDIT: Especially keep your mouth shut when talking to people who run Great Powers when you are early 20th century Poland. ;)

First off, I never claimed to be speaking directly about you. I understand you've been having family problems (You've said it plenty of times) and I understand that stuff like that is far more important then this NES. However, Im talking about others who dont exactly have a reason, such as getting drunk. Now, I can understand why people like to get drunk, but its not that hard to give orders if you're only partially hammered.

I wont pretend to know what you people's problems are, so I cant really judge how things are.

However, I know this is just a game, however"

The Factory doesn't shut down because a few workers are late.

OOC: The person getting drunk turned in orders a while ago you know ;) A responsible drunk person I know, I was shocked too

Let us celebrate. Who wants vodka... Not the cheap low shelf kind, but the top shelf expensive kind!

Drink well comrades ;)

What can I say, its better to be happy and annoying rather then miserable and quiet :)

Do not post after this post until I say so.

The Tides of Tyranny Chapter 1, Scene 3 – Uncertainty

Spring/Summer 1933

Europe

De Gaulle, already a beloved man in mainland France, has set about to ensure his immortality in the further regions of France. A fair portion of the budget has been poured into the north African states of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. De Gaulle himself knows that progress will be slow, and some in France’s higher circles are already becoming impatient. The President is always quick to remind them that it has only been six months, and that much more work is left to be done to a land long left neglected.

Europe’s crusade against Communism continues in Italy…(see Spotlight)
(Germany: -2 infantry divisions, -1 artillery division)(France: -5 infantry divisions, -2 artillery division, -1 armor division, -1 S35 Armor division, -2 fighter squadrons)(Austria: -5 infantry divisions, -3 armor divisions, -3 fighter squadrons)(Italy: government dissolved, military disbanded)

After the swift invasion of Italy, a new alliance has been formally announced in Berlin between the invading powers of the French Republic, the German Reich, and the Austrian Empire. This sudden shift in foreign policy ends Erbfeindschaft and places the powers that be in Moscow, London, and even Washington on high alert.

It was the final straw for Germany. Up to this point, the diplomatic maneuvering and backtracking done by the Poles was little more than comedic relief. Then, the Congress deposed the German puppet ruler, King Adelbert, and instated a socialist state…clearly not in the plans for Germany, as could be seen by the invasion of Italy.

The attack began on the first of February, and within the first three days it was clear who had the upper hand. German soldiers stormed through the border, devastating the Polish infantry stationed on the border. This was expected by the Poles, but what was not expected was the sudden fall of Warsaw.

In a massive military oversight, the Polish commanders had completely neglected the German garrison present in Warsaw. As soon as they began to mass infantry to bunker down for a German attack from the outside, the inner garrison seized the middle of the city and pushed the infantry back out of the city. Much of the government was captured alive, and are now being sent to Berlin. With the army in shambles, Poland desperately retreated to the Vistula. German commanders pressed on, but more tentatively as no notice had yet come from Moscow. They got their notice a day later as Polish soldiers supplemented with fresh Russian divisions, pushed the Germans out of the Vistula region and back to Warsaw. The skies could not be secured by either side, with the Russians & Poles outnumbering the Germans by a 5-1 ratio but with the Germans inflicting enough losses to prevent total control of the air.

Of course, all of this was before the German counterattack. Reinforced from the East German garrison, the Russo-Pole armies were forced to fall back as a massive mechanized force fell on them from the north. Shiny new squadrons battle their Russian counterparts over Warsaw, taking 3 Russians for every German. The main cities along the Vistula have been viciously bombarded by both sides, as the targets have gone from being civilian to legitimate military targets. The line has been blurred.

The German Hochesflotte, responding to Russian belligerence against the Scandinavian Union, sailed to meet up with their Scandinavian allies. The Russians once again found themselves outflanked, outgunned, and outmatched and limped back to St. Petersburg, the Imperial Fleet a smoldering wreck.

(Germany: -7 infantry divisions, -3 artillery divisions, -5 mech. armor divisions, -4 mech. infantry divisions, -15 fighter squadrons, -5 fighter-bomber squadrons, -2 medium bomber squadron, -3 picket ships, -3 fleet ships, -2 battle cruisers)(Russia: -10 infantry divisions, -30 fighter squadrons, -10 picket ships, -7 fleet ships, -2 battleships, -2 carriers)(Poland: -6 infantry divisions, -2 mech. infantry divisions, -3 mech. armor divisions, -2 artillery divisions, -5 Red Ace squadrons)(Scandinavia: -5 picket ships, -4 fleet ships, -1 battle cruiser)

Austria has cut off all ties with the Polish state, or what remains of it. Trade has been ceased and the defense pact is now considered null and void.

The last of the German industries left in Russia have been nationalized under order of the Tsar, including the Berlin-Beijing railroad. As Germany has been relying less on this railroad, due to rising Russian agitation against Germany in recent years, the effect is minimal.

The new central government of the Union of Scandinavia has secured many allies within the political arenas of the peninsula with their wide appeasement of Socialists and education reform. Finland is still spurred on by a feeling of nationalism, largely supported by Russia. Fortunately for the UoS, the Russian detachment is small and ill equipped to handle the entrenchment positions offered by the UoS. Finnish guerilla forces are perfectly large in size on their own, however, and there is no end in site of their resistance.

(Scandinavia: +1 government efficiency)

In Sofia the Greater Bulgarian Empire has been formed, a final formality that acknowledges the recent annexations of Romania and Albania. Romania offered only meager resistance (though the occupation is facing a few problems in the “backlands”), while Albania capitulated willingly. The larger issue facing the GBE has been the economic integration of perhaps the poorest countries in the world, and the Bulgar economy has swooned as a byproduct of this.

(Bulgaria: -2 infantry divisions, -1 artillery division, -1 economy level)

New Beneluxian economic policies have resulted in spurred growth this quarter.

Prime Minister Franco continues his crusade against “enemies of the Kingdom”. Thousands have been imprisoned and the military finds itself often in use, making sweeping searches through Madrid and the other larger cities within Iberia. The result has been evident, with separatist attacks reaching an all time low. Franco operates with fear though, and it is a worrying streak for the populace.

Asia

The Indian National Congress has, for the most part, ceased in violent activities against the British. Talks seem to be progressing with London and it appears an independence deal of some sort is imminent.

Under the slogan of “freeing the Arabic people” the Turks have struck at the heart of European middle-eastern presence. Within a week the German defense force was defeated, far too outnumbered versus the Turkish and Russians. Turk progress through Iraq was very methodical despite their clear numerical advantage, and this allowed the true threat to materialize. Iraq is a place of great Muslim diversity and Germany controlled this largely by the threat of a great force. Turkey could not bring the same force to bear that Germany could. In addition to this, the Turks sect of Islam was not very popular too much of the Iraqi population…to them, this invasion was an empirical strike intended to enslave and persecute the Shia Muslims. The introduction of the Orthodox Russians did not help matters in this regard. In any case, the masses have risen up and are making occupying An Najaf, Mosul, and Al Ramidia a chore indeed.

Turkish goodwill in some locations were wiped out by the use of bombing campaigns against resistance positions, which often were inside highly populated civilian regions. The remaining German soldiers have set up defense positions in lower Iraq as the Turks have stopped to consolidate their gains.

In coordination with this, a Turkish air force detachment along with the entirety of their naval forces, has secured the Bosporus Straights. Residents in Constantinople fear a Turkish amphibious attack will follow

The Mohammed Shah University is completed in Tehran, and with it comes the endless parades and patting on the backs by the Shah. Not that the populace mind much. The Shah has reached a point of admiration among his people that they whole heartedly will attend parades in honor of his ego.

Mashhad and Raft are the newest targets of Iranian industrialization. Mashhad conforms to it much easier and needs only a little bit more investment while Raft has a ways to go.

Public outcry has reached the Shah’s ears; the Shiite majority in Iran are clamoring for war with Turkey and even Russia as a response to the invasion and bombing of Iraq. In other news, an incredibly sexy man by the name of Azale Azaleson has been appointed to Minister of Awesomeness by the Shah.

China. China China China. Strife has been common in this land for centuries but with the advent of modern weaponry and the intervention of foreign powers it has reached a level previously unreachable, even for the most mentally unstable of Emperors. The Xuantong Emperor, though proven to be a coward, is far from mentally unstable. With some gentle “persuasion” he returned to Beijing, announcing his total rule of the Qing government. Coupled with this was a thorough purging of every level within the aforementioned Qing government, from the highest generals to the royal garden keepers. The hedges suffered greatly but the overall military efficiency has not been affected and the populace generally seems satisfied with the dismissal of what the Emperor pleads are “evil elements of the Empire”. Infrastructure is improved, though it is negligible within the small area still under control of the Emperor, and with war creeping into every corner of the shrinking empire the affects are short lived and largely shifted towards the war effort. Shandong province was returned within the month to the Qing from their longtime foreign ally, Germany. The effects are still minimal; the army cares little about the return of a province that does not even include the most important city in the region, Qingdao. Besides, their concern is to not be shot, not to care whether they will retreat 10 miles to Beijing or 100 miles.

The Xuontang was not done there however, and followed his frantic new policy with a radical economic plan. First, he confiscated all of the lands owned by the Chinese generals and capitalists who fled the country when the PLA invaded. Second, and most stunningly, he ordered a REDISTRIBUTION of this land to the nearby peasants. The PLA has received wind of this and is using it as grounds that the Emperor has already begun to capitulate to the Communist ideas. General amnesty of all communists and communist sympathizers was enacted, but all this did was encourage Chinese fearful of Qing reprisal to rise up, in the realization that even if they were caught or if the PLA did lose, they would face no consequences.

Preamble: May there be Virtue. The Chinese Nation, desiring to establish peace, order and prosperity, and to promote the well being of all her subjects, in the exercise of its sovereignty, proclaims her will to ensure peace, order and prosperity. The right to own property is paramount to the Nation.

That is the preamble to the proposed new constitution, to be implemented after the “successful Qing overthrow of the false Communist ideals”. Its direct clash with policies recently implemented concerning redistribution of land and the respect of land already redistributed under PLA rule is noticeable and Communist propaganda against the constitution is already rippling through China. Overall, if you were to judge the Xaontong Emperor’s policies over these six months, you would consider them a wide failure. This is an unfair position to take for several reasons. First, the Xaontong essentially lost any credibility with his subjects once he fled China. He is now seen largely as a puppet of the imperialist Russians or even worse, the dirty Japanese, and whether this is true or not…perception is everything. Second, his position is not one of strength. At the very least he has garnered a nice morale boost in his military by his mere presence.

Now, to the battlefield. The opening act of this year would not be a grand land clash as Zhengzhou provided in the fall, but a battle for air supremacy fought over Zhengzhou’s skies. The Qing held the advantage in firepower but were woefully outnumbered in fighter squadrons. The PLA took the Qing air force head on, engaging in hundreds of dogfights. Soon the sky was cleared of Qing fighters, leaving their bombers completely exposed and their reconnaissance ability crippled. The effect of this loss would be felt immediately on the ground as the PLA struck at unexpected angles against the Qing armies, blind to their activities. Communist sympathizing cells bypassed by the Qing armies would assist the PLA in harassing the longer supply lines throughout the spring. The Qing would counterattack in the east with a medium sized battalion, disposing of a small PLA raiding unit. The same problems plague this army as well though, and gains have been slowed after great initial success. As the Qing continue to fall back on most fronts more and more cells have appeared. Scare tactics are being implemented but less and less people are choosing to feign loyalty to the Dynasty as the PLA drives toward Beijing. A Qing defense force has kept the PLA at bay and likely will for months to come, unless the cells continue to grow at their current pace.

If you are sympathizing with the Qing right now, I suggest you save some room for the Republicans. Chiang-Kai Shek has essentially gone MIA, most blaming a stint of insanity that struck at the worst possible time. This would also explain the constitution as well. With no orders being sent to high command, the Republican army has chosen to maintain its defensive positions. The populace has chosen to defect, in large numbers.

china_meatball.jpg

Basically, the only parts that remain under Republican control are those in the defense line garrison, Shanghai and Nanking, and whatever the Japanese can subjugate. The original commands of not occupying any actual Chinese cities is proving impossible as the lack of Republican presence means a Japanese one is necessary to keep supply lines open. The Japanese constitute more of the Republican defense line than the Republicans themselves, and the PLA is not biting on the steely metal death trap the Japanese army promises to supply. A stalemate ensues.

Speaking of stalemates, Russians and PLA soldiers alike stare and at each other across the border this time. Cold, mean stares, and occasionally some rock throwing occurs. Nothing more, however, as if the Russians do not attack…the PLA has no intention of drawing them into the war any further. Insurrection against Russian presence has been slowly negated by a terrorizing campaign of “raze it and think later”. Being a communist is not a fun occupation in Russian occupied China.

In Australia, god misplaces Canberra most likely. Also, the United Australia Party dominates in Parliamentary elections. Joseph Lyons, from the UAP, is voted Prime Minister and goes about kicking the holy living hell out of West Timor. It begins with a polite request, obstinately refused by the Beneluxian governor, and is followed up with a brutal bombing campaign the likes of which the world has never seen. Then, tanks come in to mop up the remaining…err…monkeys and wildlife, just to make sure nothing is actually living in West Timor anymore. Soldiers frequently trip over dead bodies and this is infact the leading cause of casualties in the Bloody War of Timor (rhyme ftw).

The Beneluxian government was not pleased.

Africa

The age of the Concord begins!!! And the age of ripping off American acronyms continues for the new CSA (Concord of South Africa). The new government has quickly reestablished its legitimacy with the South African people, and people abroad are taking a liking to the government, especially immigrants. The new Immigration to Freedom Act has allowed for a massive influx of immigrants from war torn regions such across the globe. While most of these immigrants have been relocated to crappy Griqualand, it is better than Oppressalotsville and the economy of South Africa is feeling a boon from this new core of South African workers. In a fit of joy, the acting Consul, Alexander Beowulf, announces the Haynes Plan which he says will increase the education level of the nation by five to a level previously unknown called “Too Damn Smart for Your Own Good” in a period of 2 years, to which the Ministry of Education says “slow down there skippy”.

(South Africa: +2 extra EP this turn, +lowered expectations for completion of project)

Congressional hearings were held on the application of statehood by several territories in the United States, namely Alaska, Hawaii, Chihuahua, and Mexico City. All failed to pass the requirements but will likely pass at the next hearing.

In perhaps the few instances of what you could call a scientific coup, the renowned world genius Albert Einstein has left Berlin to live in America. The reasoning was, as he said “based on the direction of the respective countries. I feel my work will be more appreciated in America and I feel more secure there.”

(America: +1 education)

The Dominion of Canada has changed its name to the Confederation of Canada, but wishes to stress the respect they still have for His (or her? It’s late, give me a break :p ) Majesty. The referendum in Newfoundland has also finished, with very positive pro-Canadian results. Once again, with no insult to His/Her Majesty.

Colombia is a real pain in the arse, always has been and always will be. The Germans did not think much of it, so when the country erupted into Red Fever, they felt no strong urge to offer their strong medicine. Instead, this task has fallen to America and her allies, Venezuela and Bolivia.

Operation Full Tilt went full tilt (tee hee) early in the spring with a two pronged attack. One of love another of steel. The hearts and minds campaign has seen a very minimal effect against what has become an entrenched way of life for the Colombians. It’s not so much the Communist ideology they love, rather the almost institutionalized power of the families in control of most of these Communista groups. They are armed to the teeth and will not give up their power so easily. The Americans, however, do not come lightly prepared to this battle and like an Australia on West Timor, they strike with ferocity in the Communista’s own backyard. The soldier of choice is the Marine and it is a wise choice indeed, their constitution allowing for extended campaigns in the miserable conditions of jungle warfare. Even as the Americans Bolivians continue to press the Communista’s however, they retreat ever further. Their administrative areas are falling more rapidly but the overall movement is very alive. Still, it has been largely contained. Venezuela has kept a lock on its borders while Peru dares not move with America flexing its muscles so close behind them.

Argentina continues to phail at occupying Paraguay. Seperatists have seized control of the old North Paraguay, declaring it the new Socialist Commune of Northern Paraguay. A charismatic man is leading these declarations, though his name is not yet known.

Spotlight:

The ideal communist country is one that's easy to escape from.- Former General Philippe Petain

Everyone gather around and I will tell you tale. It is as many other tales are. There are heroes and villains, harrowing adventures and excitement. There is also sorrow, death, and shattered dreams. Gather round and you might learn something of the nature of a world soaked in blood.

It all starts on quiet spring day, one of the first days of spring actually. It would not be quite much longer. Remember the Triple Alliance I told you all about? Of course you don’t, so let me refresh your memory. Former jaded enemies, France and Germany, formed an unholy trinity along with the Austrian Empire to become the Triple Alliance of Europe. This Alliance obviously seeks to protect its own goals, its own ideals. The ideology that preached the overthrow of the bourgeoisie and all that oppose Marxist ideals in a worldwide revolution is not one of these ideals. The Iberian Commune had been crushed with relative ease less than a year ago and now Franco orchestrated his iron fisted rule over the Kingdom. Chinese villages that had a hint of red in them were burned wholesale in Russian occupied territories. Being a communist was not a safe occupation.

The Italians knew this. More specifically, the weak Italian Federation government knew this. It did not matter. The Italians were tired of being weak, of being a mere stage to display the puppets they were in the hands of France, Austria, and Germany who pulled the strings. When the Communists revolted and took a sizeable chunk of the population with them, the government did not know whether to gasp in fear or gasp in admiration. Their bitterness soon took its course. The people wanted no conflict with these freedom fighters, as they were seen, and the government had no real way to combat them anyway. Their “masters” had ditched them in their one time of true need. This was the final straw. The Italian government ordered a general cease-fire while they met in secret. In a week’s time, the new Socialist Republic was declared and much rejoicing commenced. They were finally free; Italy was free from the burdens of a past war that had been unfairly dumped at the feet of their citizens and their country. The leaders of this new Italy did not sleep well that night, however, nor did they sleep particularly well after. They new the consequences of what they had done, they knew. The masters were not fond of their puppets disobeying them.

To talk about the military conflict itself almost seems a waste. The Italian Army, having barely been formed and barely having cast off its feeble militia use. They were expecting an invasion, but really only had one tactic to employ on the field of battle. The tactical retreat. This was obviously not going to be enough to halt the unstoppable advance of perhaps the world’s three foremost armies (depending on whom you talked to). The German garrison in Rome forced a pitched battle at the outskirts of the capital, where French reinforcements ensured no Italian division would escape intact. The remainder of the Italian Army dissolved into the countryside, unpursued by the occupiers.

The government disappeared into thin air too, it seemed. Not that it mattered to the Triples much with complete military dominance of the peninsula. Partition plans began to circulate and it was only a matter of time before ideas of Italian independence were a thing of the past.

No one informed the Italians of this. As the occupying forces began to file into various Italian cities, the war after the war began. Italy had long been a breeding ground for seedy groups and shady organizations and now they all brought themselves to bear on the occupiers. They were immensely unpopular to the populace as well, obviously, so it was incredibly difficult to gain information without knocking down doors or shooting up half a town. Two groups have been identified as the main perpetrators of violence.

partisan.jpg

The Communist & Nationalist partisans are your typical separatist movement. They successfully order hundreds of roadside bombs, ambushes, and raids every day. It is speculated with wide belief that every Italian has a favorable connection to the C&N groups within the country. They are extremely widespread but have no real identifiable base of operations yet located.

The Anarchist sect, as it has been identified by the Triples, is far more dangerous. Their tactics include large-scale terrorist attacks, including the destruction of entire hotels, higher rising structures, even churches on occasion. They have been marked for the assassination of dozens of high ranking officers and have waged a secret campaign of terror and subterfuge against the collaborators within Italy, having sent many a collaborators arm or other body part in a box to their family, and the occupiers whom they collaborated with. They share a huge support among the populace as well.

And there it is, another tale of hope destroyed. The worker’s paradise is not an acceptable fantasy to the imperial powers of the world, not even in small scale practice. Italy is not just about Communism or Capitalism, but the spirit of humanity. To be kicked and neglected for decades is no way to foster hope and comradery with their fellow man. Sometimes when you have had enough, you have had enough.

What I find really funny is that the previous turn I ordered the withdrawl of German Soldiers cause, the original agreement was that it was a one turn thing.

*Sigh*

Atleast I'm not dead yet, I've held up far better then either Spain or Italy.

Aw, c'mon, beating up West Timor was pretty cool. I bombed them! I bombed them a LOT! If nothing else, that deserves cool points.

Not to mention, I killed all the damned monkeys. That's pretty awesome, if you ask me.

Good update, comrade!

TO THE WORLD
FROM THE SOCIAL REPUBLIC OF POLAND

What ill fate is it that has befallen our peaceful little republic of Poland.

The German's show their true colors! Poland never meant anyone any harm and yet the German War Machine has done this terrible deed. Why is it that we Pole's are to be prosecuted for our communist beliefs. Why is it we must fall victim to these aggressors.

We call to the world to unite. The Germans have declared war and in their own intrests have thrown much of Europe into war! We must stop them before they strike at others! Taking more lifes!

Even if Poland is doomed we must let the world know of the German wrongs! We ask the world to prepare for war. For if Poland falls today... Who may the German's strike at next?

OOC: While I must say the dismal results of the update was expected due to the rather stupid nature of the previous Qing NPC , I must say that I do not find Nuclear Kid's joining and apparent disappearing act amusing. The man had the intelligent to go mucking around in a situation and then apparently decided not to hang around.

Oh well, won't go down without a fight.
