HistoriCanada Modpack for Civ3: Episode 1

Looks great I can't wait to try it out.

I wonder if I could get a grant from the Scottish Executive for a HistoriScotia game. New Scottish National Party government are likely to be interested in rewriting history.

The map might need to be the whole world though as I don't think the British Isles will be big enough for their ambitions.

Honestly, is this all the government of Canada has to spend the taxpayers' money on? I'm all for modpacks, don't get me wrong, but it's a bit daft for the millions of non-Civ playing Canadians to have to fund this...

Hey, it's better than wars!

I'm sure the intent of using it in schools for teaching Canadian history was the main factor. Plus, I wonder if someone in a Ministry of Education is a big Civ fan?! :)

Indeed, this would have worked much better in CivIV - especially after BtS gives us more events and decisions to make. But of course, it could reach more students as Civ III.

It appears that there was also another reason:

CBC

The game can currently be downloaded for free from the website, provided users already have Civilization III and the popular game's Conquests expansion pack on their computers. But the full game, including Civilization III, will be available early next week.

. . .

There are plans in the works to distribute 100,000 free copies of the game bundled with the Civilization III software.

This is amazing Im still rubbin my Eyes. Imagine A civ3 player an a Canadian to boot, waking up to the news of a "Conquests" expansion featuring the work of favorite mod artists.

These guys are workin with the ones who made the Rise of Rome Scenario, easily considered the best scenario ever packaged in a Civ game. Read any Civ4 Warlords thread where members complain about those sad ingame scenarios like 'Omens' and you got more wishing the 'Conquests' quality 'Breakaway Games' brought would come back. Well it finnaly has!! and thanks to us (Canucks) not a single penny down for ya'll So best be happy, This is the expansion to 'Conquests' conquest scenarios and it featues the only G8 country to not be made a civ. Beauty!

Ya you can't put a price on National unity and the Gov did this one right. If we trimmed corners it would have failed. They did it well and went straight to the strategy game citidel. Breakaway Games holds fast from todays eyecandy thats focus threatens to devour gameplay. Look the way CIv3 held out in the face of forseen 'total annilhilation' and its following 'X pack'
That roaring tech wave that rang the prophacy of the pattern'd mass exidus from the series 'past' has unprecedently not come to pass.

Are goverment isn't the only one who hires Breakaway Games. Besides Fireaxis, who paid to protect its Civ legacy after PtW's fall, :( American taxpayers pay Breakaway to protect are entire continent, in doing so saving Canadians a ton of coin in the defence budget :D IM mean forking out for training Abram operaters on sims with the livest feel money can buy we get the benifit in the future when they swerve to miss driving through our houses when they come up to invade. *cough* I mean protect us, from the next terrorist threat that falls on our doorstep:undecide: .
Serious, Its only fair we Canandains pay back this favour in the same serious game currency we'll call it 'Breakaway bucks' the standard on the strategy front.

SO free Civving for fee living, Its a nice off no? :high5: Thanks and appreciate this great look into my nations past. Also happy to see CIv get a cultural expansion, This is a whole new era of Civving Who knows how far its influence will spread.

I have Conquests on my laptop and I will definitely explore this mod!

I wonder what non-Canadians who study/have studied Canadian history will think of the content of the game in comparison to what they've learned about our country. :) (Assuming of course they play Civilization, lol)

As a Canadian I was initialy surprised this mod gained financial support from the Government of Canada. Government grants are usually unpredictable to get other than those pandering to the political theatre of the day (like huge corporations asking for "assistance"). However, in looking at the intent - to educate youth about Canadian history - and the cleverness of doing this through a popular strategy game, I can see that someone with forethought saw an opportunity to support something creative and positive. There has a been a push in recent years to promote knowledge of Canadian history to all Canadian citizens (the CBC was involved in producing an amazing TV documentary style miniseries just a few years ago); our patriotism seems more pronounced this last decade than for quite some time - not since Expo 1967 (when I was just a wee lad of 5 years!)

I'm looking forward to trying this out :D

PS: I noticed the mod's website main page has a banner for Civ IV! :)

Will keep the MAC idea around, but at this time still no promises.

I was a part of the original development team for the Conquests Expansion pack. While doing that, I learned a great deal, and Breakawaygames was a blast to work for on that project.
Just wanting to make things a little clear however. Breakawaygames was involved in this project during its early development. I was invited along to assist. Later on in the project, Bitcasters of Canada brought me on board to help push this project along.

Giving complete credit, where credit is due :), if it wasnt for the great efforts, and fantastic foresight as well as proper research by the Bitcasters team, this project would not have come to light. The people at Bitcasters have been working on the creation of this sort of project for a long long time. They put together a fantastic team of experts, and historians, as well as gamers, modders and artists. They have developed an almost completely Canadian civilopedia, and have made this mod come to life. Its been a great pleasure working for the Bitcasters team during this creation. I hope to see more of this project come to life soon.

I wish government of my country did this. Any screenshots?

You can see a few shots on the Historica web site listed at the top of this thread.

Well, I had misunderstood. I thought this was for Civ4, but it's Civ3 & C3C. All Mac players would need is access to the files. Zip them up and place where we can d/l them. Then, we'll work our magic. :)

Just got this press release from 2K:

2K Partners with Bitcasters to Create and Donate HistoriCanada: The New World Video Game

Professionally Designed Mod Based on Best-Selling Sid Meier’s Civilization III™ Engine Will Allow 100,000 High School Students to Replay and Rewrite Canada’s History

New York, NY – May 31, 2007 – 2K, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), today announced the completion of HistoriCanada: The New World, the world’s first Canadian history computer game, based on the critically-acclaimed Sid Meier’s Civilization III™ series from Firaxis Games. 2K and Bitcasters, an international media firm that produced the game, have teamed up to create this unique mod of Civilization III to offer Canadian students a fun and interactive way to learn about their history. HistoriCanada: The New World will be packaged with copies of Sid Meier’s Civilization III and donated to 100,000 high school students across Canada.

“2K is proud to be a part of the development and donation of HistoriCanada: The New World, which will provide students across Canada with access to an unprecedented educational experience,” said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. “In addition to learning about their history through simulation scenarios, students can look at original artwork, watch vignettes and read articles about hundreds of topics thanks to the involvement of The Canadian Encyclopedia and Historica Minutes.”

A historically-based strategy game derived from the history of Canada, HistoriCanada: The New World will allow players to explore the parameters of their Canadian past and even alter outcomes of historical events that, at one point, were unresolved or uncertain. Gamers will control one of Canada’s early European or Aboriginal civilizations, making important decisions ranging from planning their settlement and crops, to determining when to wage war or make peace. Additionally, players will ponder questions about specific points in time across 17 civilizations spanning 400 years, including 10 First Nations tribes, European powers and the English and French colonies.

“After two years in development, HistoriCanada: The New World will provide a unique opportunity for students to totally immerse themselves in Canada’s deep history,” said Nathon Gunn, co-creator of HistoriCanada: The New World and CEO of Bitcasters. “This groundbreaking computer game will increase students’ national pride and give them an entirely new outlook on their country.”

HistoriCanada: The New World was created using the Sid Meier’s Civilization III game engine, integrating the sophisticated social, economic and military simulations of the award winning strategy game. In addition to donating 100,000 copies of HistoriCanada: The New World, 2K will also provide each student with a copy of Sid Meier’s Civilization III. HistoriCanada: The New World also comes with a demo version of Sid Meier’s Civilization IV™, cited as the 2005 PC Game of the Year by many leading gaming reviewers.
They forgot to include a link to the HistoriCanada site.

Very nice of 2K to donate 100K copies of Civ3 to Canadian shcools... :)

WOw thanks for the news I was following the story here. As you see, at this time they were just hoping for a break mybe the Gov would sponser a proper launch. THey even had a retired Senator stand up at the nation capital in support. Anyway I'll never say a bad word in public about this company again.
This is all majorly unprecedented Civ news. Usually the same few bits on the latest expansion or what not is all thats majorly newsworthy, but this is more of what this web site stands for. Civs grip on the world tightens!

100 000 new players to the Civ3 arena. Looks like Civ3 is on steriods(cheatin like Ben in the 100). I bet we'll end up giving out advice and dispatching mods to around 500 of so from this bunch, many probably never would taken a brake from VIce city or Gods of War long enough to have know they liked this game. If this idea spreads to other schools....

One thing for sure Civ4 is cut out of this arrangment for years to come. I can see it know, excuses for late assignments rolling with the usual ; Um,... "Its due already?/Sorry Miss jerky I had it finished but the Maf error ate my homework ;)

The real issue is the incompatibility between the PC & Mac versions, not the directory. AlanH, who is on staff here, would be a great resource for you. As he says,[/QUOTE]

The long answer is that the SDK is just a bunch of C++ source code, so theoretically it can be made to compile on a Mac to create a DLL. But the DLL would not know how to interface to the rest of the Mac OS unless the code was modified substantially, and there would be no way for the Mac version of Civ4 to talk to the resulting DLL, as the standard DLL code has been integrated into the Mac Civ4 application. So the necessary hooks have not been created for Mac Civ4 to talk to an external custom DLL.

WTH? I am truly glad that someone out there understood this! lol... I know... am a luddite!

But hopefully this will allow Canandian scientists to get this mod ported onto Mac's so I can repaly my history during the long cold winter!

[dojoboy, did i get you right? (remember, am luddite) if you techies can get the files and do your zipping magic we can have at them? this would be grand as I have Civ III Complete, too.]

This looks interesting but when I hit run I get a dialogue box that says: C:\Users\Owner\Downleads\Canada_NewWorld_civ3complete_dl_v1.2.exe is not a valid Win 32 application.

I have Civ 3 complete and run Windows Vista. Is this a Vista issue or something else?

Bob, do you know when Canadian students will receive their copy (with Civ3 included)?

I am not certain of the timing, I think the production of the cd's is planned for the next week or so, however, I could not answer when the distribution time frame would be.

You may want to pop that question on the Historica site. They may beable to better answer you. :)
