Heart of the Republic - A Rome: Total War AAR

Part Twenty-Eight
The War of Iberia

The invasion of Iberia began in the late months of 218 BC with both Killyouallus and Thrawnus attacking their respective regions. It began with Republic assassins killing two high-ranking Iberian Generals on the eve of the attack. It began with a devastating battle at Osca.

Killyouallus had been sieging the city for several months when the expected counter-attack came. Two Iberian armies were marching on him, both 1500 strong against his own 2800 men. Scouts reported that they were mostly weak infantry units, with very few archer or cavalry units. And they were not yet fully formed. Remarkably, the first army was moving to engage Killyouallus’ forces before joining with the second force. Obviously they were hoping to break the Republic Army’s spirit in order to allow the second force to administer a death blow.

To counter this, Killyouallus moved his forces away form his encampment and between the first army and the reinforcements coming from Osca. Not expecting such a bold move by the Roman army, the Iberians were caught off guard, and their reinforcements were destroyed by a well-timed cavalry attack. The remainder of the army had few men brave enough to make it to even the Roman frontline before breaking. The hail of spears and arrows was overwhelming.

Iberian barbarians are no match for the well organised Roman forces

Killyouallus was the sort of general that followed standard Roman tactics, and as such allowed the Iberian army to flee in peace (though only after the killing of their general). He send out messengers that, if Osca was surrendered to the Republic, then he would allow all Iberian troops to leave in peace. His mercy was not reciprocated by the Iberians, who joined the remnants of the defeated army with the oncoming second force, and marched once again on Killyouallus.

The second battle went much like the first, though this time the Iberians attempted a basic pincer attack on the Roman forces. They did not expect for Killyouallus to slam his left flank straight into the attacking army before they were ready, nor did they expect so brutal a slaughter of their troops when on the retreat. They had ignored his offer of peace, and as such they paid with the destruction of their entire army. Killyouallus was that sort of general.

Second Battle of Osca

In the end, the Iberians lost nearly 2300 men in their counter-attack, whereas the Roman force lost little more that 70 men. Osca had fallen, and Killyouallus was quickly preparing to press the invasion. Northern Iberia was open to the Republic…

Er... Yes! I AM that sort of general!

Never mind, it's better then...erm...3 DAYS!

I always know my AAR's are doing well when people start wishing they had/just bought the game for themselves

Well, it did really influence me to buy the series in the first place.
I'm just not at a palce where it can be played :( (I tried to install it here once, RTW worked so freaking slow it was unplayable).

well this AAR inspired me to get Rome....

this AAR has also been going long enough that I cant play it anymore since I accidentally uninstalled it while trying to make some room

Rome wasn't built in one day ...

I'm hoping to get an update done tonight, but if not definitely tomorrow. I need to play several years in advance, as the next part returns us to Rome and the StevieJey/Branius plot.

Civverguy, I almost forgot to put you into the first post, but you're now named Civvergus, and are second General in Killyouallus' Army - the second Iberian force invading southern Spain :)

Edit: e350tb: You have command of the force attempting to take Burdigala in south-western Gaul.

Awesome. With a bit of luck, I'll be able to achieve my life's dream...to conquer BRITAIN! (maybe.)

But for now, time to let my men and the enemy know...I am a very cruel man.

Part Twenty-Nine
The House of StevieJey II
216BC

The opening battles of the Iberian war were over, and StevieJey could be happy with its success. Since the Battle of Osca, Republic armies had been strengthened, giving greater options for the Generals. In addition, the landings at Carthago Nova had proved a success, with Killyouallus easily taking the city, though at the expense of most of his horse units. Cavalry tactics were still an underdeveloped school of warfare in the Republic.

Roman troops don’t need a gates to enter a city

More concerning though, was the increase of naval attrition on the Mediterranean. Attacks continued from the navies of Gaul, Sarmatia, Iberia and an increasingly growing Carthaginian navy (where were they building them from, if their cities were still blockaded by the Roman fleet?) At present, the shipyards of Sicily were on full production, and replacing losses as a fast rate. Rome still ruled the western Mediterranean.

But that wasn’t the only bad news, as the Republic was devastated by the loss of two of her generals. In the north, Captainus II was ambushed and killed while on a standard patrol of the Iuvavum province. His killers were Sarmatian, reminding the Senate that the northern borders were still not secure, even after the recent glorious victories there. As a Hero of Rome, Captainus was returned to the eternal city and placed alongside the other legends of the Republic. Any future heir would have a lot to live up to.

The other casualty was no less of a blow, though it was under more glorious circumstances. General Killyouallus, after conquering Carthago Nova and a large Iberian army at the River Guadiana, was finally halted at the city of Arse. A brave Iberian unit held their ground far better than expected, destroying any enemy that came too near. It took three cavalry charges and a final one on one with an elite Roman infantry division to finally dislodge and destroy them, but the General was among the casualties. Leaderless and seeking retribution, his soldiers burned the city in anger, killing any Iberian citizen they could find.

The new western coast of the Republic

These losses were slightly blunted by the falls of Emporiae by Thrawnus and Burgidala by the new General Tbus, and Killyouall could be easily replaced by his Lieutenant, Civvergus. However, it can’t have escaped even the Consulars attention that the people of Rome were worried at what such deaths meant. Were the Gods angry at the decision to go to war with Iberia, a nation that had never threatened Rome, and had assisted in the Punic War against Carthage? If so, the blame lay directly in the hands of the man who had chosen to defy them! For now such musings could be easily ignored, all it would take to dispel them would be more victories in Iberia, victories that could be easily achieved with the powerful armies already there, and a new one being produced in Italy. What StevieJey failed to see however, was that the threat to his rule was a lot closer to Rome than he thought…

he he he...

ouch I see my replacement didnt last very long....Dont make them like they used to

and yeah, this is obviously work of the gods :p

At least the new Captainus had the pleasure of being featured in one of my Great Battle Reports. The previous one just sort of lingered in northern Italy.

Also, I can't tell what is blockading the port for Palma.

Probably Carthage, but Iberia would be another likely bet.

If the gauls are still giving us trouble mayby we should wipe them out after the spansish are delt with.
