Blake posted this on Apolyton a few hours ago: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=168349

Hopefully you can get some use out of it. :)

This is basically what you need to know about the changes to various handicaps and settings in BTS, along with some of the abilities of the AI which changes the way the game plays.

HEALTH AND HAPPY CAPS

Health and Happy caps are now much lower at easier difficulty levels and slightly higher at higher difficulties, now every difficulty level above Chieftain has the same health and happy cap, the same as old Monarch.

REDUCTIONS IN AI BONUSES

The AI no longer receives massive discounts on Unit Supply (units outside territory), Unit Upgrades, Inflation and War-Weariness.

Unit Supply: Used to range from 10% (Deity) to 50% (Settler), now 50% at every difficulty level.
Unit Upgrades: Used to range from 5% (Deity) to 45% (Settler), now 50% at every difficulty.
Inflation: Used to range from 20% (Deity) to 100% (Settler), now 80% at every difficulty above Chieftain.
War-Weariness: Used to range from 20% (Deity) to 100% (Settler), now 80% at every difficultly above Chieftain.

Barb Combat Bonus: Now only +25% vs barbs (was +40%) and +40% vs Animals (was +70%)

Free Units: All difficulty levels receive 1 less free worker (if they got any), Prince has had the free scout taken away.

MAJOR CHANGES IN HOW THE AI PLAYS

The AI can effectively utilize the economic aspects of technologies like Biology, Communism, Assembly Line and Railroad. It no longer suffers an "Industrial Collapse".

The AI can expand effectively on watery maps.

The AI can effectively utilize all of ground, naval and air power in warfare.

The AI will aggressively stockpile and use nuclear weapons.

BARBARIANS AND THE RAGING BARBARIANS SETTING:

Barbarians spawn more aggressively on watery maps, Raging Barbarians is less of a toothless setting on watery maps.

THE AGGRESSIVE AI SETTING:

The Aggressive AI no longer has a relationship penalty with Human players - at higher difficulties humans are still tempting targets due to lower power, but you can use the usual diplomacy tools.

The Aggressive AI takes military seriously, good luck catching it with it's pants down. It will launch attacks which will leave you needing new pants. A player probably wont survive a dogpile by two Aggressive AI's.

Aggressive AI is not a toothless setting on watery maps, it will launch more credible naval invasions.

In general it's easier to win using peaceful strategies against aggressive AI (vs non-Aggressive AI), IF you can stay safe through diplomacy.

Thanks for the post, if all this stuff is true, then the game really has been vastly improved.

So basically, the AI gets growth, production and research rate multipliers above monarch?

This is all very very very good news. Now only to get my hands on a copy!

If I understand the adjustments to difficulty correctly, *assuming you use new features correctly*, the AI has not gotten more difficult -- it has just gotten smarter, and more balanced.

In other words, the AI does play a better game, but it also receives lower handicaps. The two should roughly balance out, so an Emperor game played with solid strategy (rather than purely taking advantage of bad AI), and incorporating the new features of BtS into play smartly, will be about as hard as an Emperor-level Warlords or Vanilla game.

Of course, this is difficult to measure, but that is my understanding for the thoughts behind the AI development.

I would much rather take this smarter AI with lower benefits than the other. YAY!!

Wow.

Simply wow.

The fact that every level starts with same health/happy but the AI plays much better is so great...

No, I won't say any more...

Simply, wow.

Wait, what?!? Players get charged gold for units that are outside of your cultural borders? Or am I interpreting Unit Supply incorrectly?

Yepp, thats unit supply for you. But i dont remember if its only in enemy territory, or just outside your borders.
Check out your financial screen to find out how much you're paying.

OK it makes total sense but I just never knew they did this. Good to know!

It's units outside your culture borders. For the calculation, I'm pretty sure enemy territory is the same expense as neutral territory.

A flat rate on Upgrades, Warwariness and supply is .. simply amazing.

Thanks Blake.

This'll make the game a little more fair.

So, how much better does the AI play? Any specific examples of new tactics that it uses? I thought the flat health/happy over Chieftain level was a great modification, although maybe it should drop one level more for Emperor and up. For old times' sake. :)

Just a simple example, I'm getting bombarded a lot more. my units are wounded by the time I get anywhere and they continue to get bombarded. This and the nerfed siege means you can't steam roll. The AI used catapults, and later airships. Those airships just repeatedly bombed my guys.

Stacks that come at you are bigger, but not silly big. eg. a stack from Cathy was; 2 swords,3 axes,2 catapults. Catapults have melee with them.

When I was fortified on a forest hill they buzzed off in the other direction to regroup and come back with more units in another place on the map.

(This was Noble)

Wow the AI is much harder than it used to be. Normally I play on Noble, to try BTS out I went back to Warlord. And still I have trouble taking over cities. AI is much better at the counterattack, uses stacks effectively and whips when needed. Combine this with nerved catapults and warfare just become so much harder.
The lower happiness and health caps on all levels are also things I wasn't expecting. Combined with the harsh war weariness because of the longer wars makes steamrolling even more of a challenge.

ButSam: Wong, these reductions the AI bonuses, NO NOT completely cancel out the AI's greater intelligence, you will still have to drop a difficulty level or more. If the bonuses hadn't been nerfed it would be even more!

Am I the only one finding it quite a bit easier, since the ai now techs more slowly due to the massive amount of troops it builds? I'd agree its harder to take cities overall though.

I'm glad to hear that! :)

It does seem like Conquest-like victories have become the most difficult, although it has become difficult overall.

I will probably drop down at least to Warlord (just won my first Warlords game on Prince but it was with favorable starting conditions). I may drop to Chieftain to experiment with the new features some, though.

As much as I am excited for the espionage feature, the improved AI is likely to be my favorite!
