Many Leaders Game 2 - Sword Training

Feedback, why don't you try Pericles? Greek, (Edit)and he's also Philosophical

@FB, if you want to change to Pericles (good suggestion mice), it is no big deal to change your save.

Oh! I see. And mice sees my playing style... I love Philosophical. ;)
So, please, change my save to Pericles. You should keep that... Saramaoiuhafioaunsoauirqhnpwiubaifoaguy save for someone else. I'll need a bunch of time to get used to these names.

And, as ChrTh, I should need a delay on the first round. It'll be tough not to read spoilers... Thanks, guys!

A note to our noble leader, Ozbenno (warning contains spoilers):

Spoiler :
I played and didn't meet anyone in the 50 turns. Are we sure this isn't an isolated start? In my experience the big-small maps have one civ starting alone on a smaller continent. Maybe we should have a neutral party check the saves to see whether we're heading for mass failure. :(

@azaris:
Spoiler :
I had contact in my first 50.

OK, plenty of things to catch up on here.

@mice, try again please. I had issues with yours and Conroe's saves, which I thought I'd sorted out.

@Conroe, can you let me know that yours is all right (I think so)

@ChrTh, no problems. Either play 100 in one report or do two, your choice.

@FB, I'll change you to Pericles and post when its done.

@TriviAl, Welcome. I'll post a save tomorrow.

@Azaris
Spoiler :
I played 50 as well and met 3 civs. Your going to love our closest neighbour whose land I walked around ;)

@r rolo, deadlines are very flexible. As long as its still Friday anywhere, you're fine.

@tlo, your problem is with BtS, not the posted save?

OK, I think that covers everyone. Phew!

Yah.. Appearently 3 GB isn't enough space to run bts.... >.<

I'm just gonna get some more RAM. I think it'll be good tomorow or the day after tomorow.
Spoiler :

I played 50 as well and met 3 civs. Your going to love our closest neighbour whose and I walked around

Lemme guess.
Spoiler :
Genghis khan is our nieghbor?

well it's not like it was game-changining info anyway. I mean you might aswell put that start picture in the OP in spoilers as well.

Anyway, what's the limit on how long we have to complete the game again?

Anyway, what's the limit on how long we have to complete the game again?

50 turns (up to 2000BC) by next Friday.

If you can't start (like ChrTh and FB) by then don't worry, just catch up in subsequent weeks.

Whatever happens, DON'T post anything beyond 2000BC until the week after.

50 turns, Sir!
//Heavy spoilers!

civ4screenshot0003gb3.jpg

Welcome to the world of Civ BTS :king:

Just to make sure you've seen our start:
civ4screenshot0004hj1.jpg

2 clams, river and some plains hills, couldn't have hope a better capital! This shall be our production city atleast for a while. Let's hope there's some copper or iron on those plains hill to boost it! I settle one north to grab the second clam into city radious.

We start with fishing so no need to research it, therefore we start to research mining, after that bronze working. Threw in animal husbandry at some point to give our worker something to do. I have something in mind which I'll tell later, just to let you know this is my 2nd bts game and I've never even tried this strategy so if it blows... :lol:

City production order: Work Boat - Work Boat.
Look, now great people tech pop order is actually in the tech screen like this:
civ4screenshot0005pw4.jpg

Cool, huh? You still can't plan to the future with it but it beats nothing :p

Our scout pops a few huts of gold and The Wheel tech, which don't really help us at all, I'd rather take Mysticsm! (why? you'll see soon!)

Here's Native Americans unique unit, Dog Soldier:
civ4screenshot0009jh9.jpg

That 8 basic strength against melee units sounds fancy yes, but I had something else in mind.. Look, Native Americans unique building is a totem pole, which replaces monument. It gives archery units free +3 experience. With a totem pole, protective trait (free lvl1 drill and city garrison promotion), barracks (+3 experience) and theocracy (+2 experience) we are bond to crank out some pretty good archery units. I wasn't exactly thinking about archers, but crossbowmen! They also get 1 first strike and +50 against melee units, but axes/maces don't get a bonus against our crossbowmen. Sounds like a plan, huh?

In order to get these early, we need 1) Iron (if we dont have iron its goodbye for this tactic) 2) Research Metal Casting and few other small techs 3) Build the oracle to get Machinery 4) Use great prophet from oracle to grab theology and theocracy. And between all that grab some land and locate enemies :rolleyes:

Back to the game!
We meet Churchill who seems to be choking on his tea or just woke up on the wrong foot. :p
civ4screenshot0010ky5.jpg

Here is the explored land so far:
civ4screenshot0011jx7.jpg

We meet Gandhi. I had a choice to either first research Iron Working to locate iron or mysticism/meditation for a free religion as buddhism has not yet been researched. I choosed IW and 2 turns later Gandhi founds buddhism :lol:

As we finish Iron Working and start mysticism, the first random events came! A hurricane had hit our capitol city reducing 1 population and crushing buildings (we didn't have any buildings! :cool: Take that, hurricane!). Oh and I guess we found our iron haha.. If I'd known where the iron will come I would have settled on the plains hill, but too late now! Also, India is flooding already! How am I getting the impression that this is somehow related to real life, america getting hurricanes and india flooding :clap:

civ4screenshot0015ra0.jpg

We also met Gandhi and Alexander before the whole random event rumble. With Alex and Gandhi borders being extremely close, I have a feeling there won't be no Gandhi when we get our units ready :scan:

We finish our settler, the lands east look yummy but not before Monarchy, so I choose the southern spot with copper, rice and pigs, very basic stuff but it will be up and running fast. As our capital has to be working on oracle to secure it, the second city can make some more cities and defence. We still don't have a worker by the way!

We found Powerty Point in the southern spot. It will start a totem pole for culture and we'll need it anyway later. We revolt to slavery to whip worker now that the 2nd dog soldier is finished.

Our tech order for the whole turnset:
Mining - The Wheel* - Bronze Working - Animal Husbandry - Iron Working - Mysticism - Meditation(2 turns till)
* = Hut
Our production order for the whole turnset:
Capitol: Work boat - Work boat - Dog Soldier - Settler - Dog Soldier - Worker
2nd city: Totem Pole

Hail our kingdom of gods!! See those few pixels of land in the bottom? Yep, there are islands.
civ4screenshot0016is0.jpg

Notice the espionage mark behind Alexanders name? It means we have used more EPs (espionage points) to spy Alex than he has to us. It don't matter much yet, we'll get to it later.

And that, as they say, is that. Now I have to wait a week.. gosh :coffee: :badcomp:

mice has Zara already. Choices left are (Boudicea, Hammurabi, Lincoln, Pericles and Suleiman).

Mind if I play Boudica with Aggressive AI turned on?
I'd be willing to take one for the team like that. :mischief:

Hi!

A returning player here - cured of World of Wowcrack, so thought I'd pick up an old and equally hefty addiction :)

Not sure if there are still any spaces left, but I'd like to give this one a try.

Had my copy a few days and been tinkering with things a bit.

I'd really like to tryout Lincoln, aim being to experiment with the newly adjusted golden ages. Very likely heading for a late game win of some sort.

Assuming neither of lincoln or that goal is taken.

It seems that Hammy, Sury, and Suley are left, right?

I'll take Hammy, then. I wonder if a chariot/bowman rush can be effective?

Just a small unrelated question, Let's say you finish your turnset in one week, but then finish the rest of the game aswell.

Can you do that? and just report a seperate turnset each week?

Charles de Gaulle, 4000 BC - 2000 BC:

Spoiler :
Wonderrs! Zat is what we want, zat is what we're going to get. Lots of zem. Being Industrious, we have an edzg-ee in zat department. Being Monsieur de Gaulle, we alrready possess one wonderr - ze greatest noose in all of Western Civilization.

(switch on Clouseausque-to-English translator)

One new (national) wonder are the Moai Statues. They grant +1 :hammers: on all water tiles for that city. Pretty good if we have a coastal capital with Bureaucracy. Lucky thing this start will have exactly that. With the added hammers the capital should be able to grab a whole host of the other wonders as well, making it an ideal GP farm.

Moving on from the GP farm we get naturally to the subject of Golden Ages and the Mausoleum of Mausollos. I've fallen in love with this wonder. If adds 50% to all GAs, and since they are now both more powerful and easier to start, this gets seriously useful. It's also pretty affordable.

The Shwedagon Paya unlocks all religious civics. This is mainly used to run Free Religion early on, which is a useful strategy on pangaea maps with many competing state religions spreading around the continent. The result is lots of happiness, good diplomatic situation and a modest boost in research. It's boosted by gold so is often cheaper to build than wonders that depend on stone or marble.

The Statue of Zeus gives any enemy civs +100% war weariness against the player. An interesting concept, but mostly works against the player if a rival ever builds this wonder. For a warmonger getting this wonder is possibly desired to facilitate conquest, but otherwise I'd give it a miss. Still, we'll build it anyway just for sheer megalomania.

The Cristo Redentor instantly grants a form of the Spiritual trait on steroids. It has great synergy with corporations - more about this later if I get that far without having my clock cleaned.

National Park is a national wonder which removes unhealthiness for population and grants a free specialist for each forest reserve in the BFC. In the right place this could make for a massive city, but of course that means leaving some forests unchopped for turning into forest reserves. Forest reserves to help spread forests and jungles, but I found the effect rather small so it remains to be seen how useful this wonder is.

The Apostolic Palace is the new wonder with the most impact. I'll try to get it, but since others are going to demonstrate its power I'll probably not prioritize it.

Turn 0: Take the hut, it grants 31 gold. Paris founded 1N. France starts with Agriculture and The Wheel. That means in the 15 turns it takes to build the first worker, we can just finish Fishing and Animal Husbandry. So research starts with Fishing, due in 5.

Turn 4: Hut gives 58 gold.

Turn 5: Fishing is in, Paris pops borders.

Turn 8: Hut pops for 22 gold.

Turn 11: Hunting is popped from a hut.

Turn 15: We have our first worker. Paris -> work boat. AH is in, start Mining.

Turn 16: Buddhism FIADL in 3360. We don't have Choose Religions on, it seems.

Turn 17: The scout survives a wolf attack and pops another hut for 87 gold. Hinduism FIADL.

Turn 19: Another hut, this time for 33 gold.

Turn 21: Mining in, start Bronze Working.

Turn 27: Paris grows to size 3 and completes a work boat. Paris -> warrior.

Turn 31: Paris is size 4 and the warrior completes, Paris -> settler.

Turn 32: BW is in, start Pottery. Revolt to Slavery.

Turn 35: Scout pops XP from a hut.

Turn 37: Pottery is done, start Mysticism.

Turn 38: Discover a source of truffles in one of BFC tiles of Paris, +1 :food: +1 :commerce: for that tile.

Turn 39: Settler done, Paris -> warrior. The choice of 2nd city is difficult. Copper is only situated at an awkward coastal site. We have discovered no neighbours, so an early axe rush is out. That makes me think a better site is 7E1N from the capital. This is going to be a massive commerce city with gold, two ivory, three wines, and sheep all in the BFC. But it does mean that I need to defend without axemen for a while, and that means teching Archery. Research switched accordingly. The settler heads out to found the mother of all commerce cities.

Turn 40: Paris -> warrior.

Turn 41: Paris -> work boat for 1 turn, then settler.

Turn 44: Archery ready, continue with Mysticism.

Turn 46: Mysticism in, start Iron Working. Orleans founded in 2160 BC. Orleans -> archer.

Turn 49:
Settler completes, Paris -> archer.

civ4screenshot0014ii9.jpg

Techs: Fishing, The Wheel, Agriculture, Hunting, Mysticism, Mining, Pottery, Animal Husbandry, Archery, Bronze Working.

Plans: Found 3rd city on flood plains 4 SE of Paris. Build road between Paris and Orleans. Complete work boat and send it exploring to find trading partners. Find iron and hook it up. Maybe grab Oracle in the meanwhile. Hook up the gold and build Shwedagon Paya.

Notes: A very good start, but all the AIs start far away it seems. This could have negative effects on the tech rate so priority is to find them. Barbs will manifest themselves soon, so we'll see how well my "no copper" gambit works. Hopefully iron is plentiful and nearby. I'm kind of betting the farm there is some in those hills next to where my 3rd city will be. Wish me luck!

I defer to Ozbenno on this, but I would imagine the whole point of us playing simultaneously is to foment discussion, etc. Playing through removes you from the discussion as there's nothing you can do with your game. I'd recommed sticking to 50 turns a week.

EDIT: Ozbenno, that reminds me. Are we going to have 'no play' periods between turns to discuss? Like, "Turn 50 due August 3rd, do not start Turn 51 until August 6th so we can discuss the turns so far" or is discussion just going to be ongoing?

One thing i forgot to mention, if we're all going to start on the same place, just with differint saves, we're all going to have the same opponents, we're all going to get the same things from the huts etc.

Judging from my and azaris games, huts don't give the same rewards.
Random events and such are of course random, but we do have same opponents. (we find them sooner or later than others though)

1. I got my PC Working so i'm going to start my game. (so i also took the pleasure to read the games)
2. Reading yours and Azaris, You got the Wheel Tech. He starts with the Wheel so it got switched over to Hunting.

TheLastone, I think the general idea is to ; play 50 turns , then read spoilers of other people's games , then have a lively discussion about the differences in approach to the same bit of land because of play style,traits,UU,UB etc.

Ozbenno, the save works fine.

To move of to stay put? I'm wondering if a move to the east might give a big Levee city on the river ? I probably wont take the risk to lose the sea access.

Hammurabi will have to do I suppose. The others seem to be even worse.

And please do send the RNGod. It'll likely make me feel better.
