Heart of the Republic - A Rome: Total War AAR
Part Thirty-Four
The House of StevieJey V
211 BC
The sun had long since set over Rome, and the streets were remarkably quiet. It had been almost a month since StevieJey had decided to invade Carthage again, though the political fallout continued to be felt in the capital. It had not taken long for word to spread of the upcoming offensive, and dissent among the populace had risen. StevieJey had not taken the harsh measure of introducing a curfew, but the large number of Yurey’s Elite Guards now patrolling did make venturing outside at night an intimidating affair.
Two figures however, were walking through the streets. Senators Raisinus Branius, Kan Sharuminar and Subius moved swiftly towards the mansion of StevieJey, situated on the Palatine Hill. Fearing that they had little time left to act - Ironmanus had already been sent to western Iberia as a governor - they had to put their plans into action immediately.
The guards at the gate had already drawn their weapons by the time the senators arrived.
“Halt, citizen.” the closest one said as the three approached. “The Consular does not wish to see anyone at this time.”
“Quiet, Heriticus.” replied Kan in a hushed voice. “It’s Sharuminar. Let us through.”
“Hullo sir!” The guard’s demeanour completely changed. “You can go through, but your friends-”
“StevieJey requested their presence, they’re fellow senators.”
“Ah, well then. On you go.”
The house of StevieJey
The guard hadn’t seemed quite convinced if this was allowed, but the senators were through. Kan’s friendship with the Consular hadn’t just been spent talking about the latest activities at the races. Acquaintances with the mansion staff, as well as memorising it’s layout, greatly contributed to the trio making their way through the building without meeting many people. Those they did see were easily turned away.
StevieJey had been sitting in one of his many chambers for some time. The work of a Consular was never lazy, and at the moment there was fears of a plague spreading from Greece, rebellion in Iberia and an annoying Gallic presence in their former lands. He was partially annoyed, partially relieved to be interrupted by three guests.
“Kan! Pleasure as always, though I’m not sure I can say the same thing for your friends.”
Raisinus responded before Sharuminar could. “Consular, we believe that you are no longer working for the people of Rome, and are instead fighting for personal-”
“Yes, yes,” interrupted StevieJey. He dropped his quill onto the table and stood up. “I know the accusations and your own thirst for power. However, you do realise that killing me isn’t going to make Rome’s problems just disappear? Not when I have most of the Generals behind me.”
On cue, Yurey stepped up from behind the Consular. Raisinus, for his part, looked shocked.
“Don’t think I don’t know of your plans, Branius.” said StevieJey, smiling, “Yurey is quite the expert in finding out other people’s business. I do believe he had help, though.”
“Senator Subius proved smart enough to realise the direction Rome was taking.” said Yurey. “If it weren’t for him we would never have discovered your game.”
Kan glanced back at Subius, who had withdrawn to the far wall. Raisinus continued to glare at the Consular, but said nothing.
“Ironmanus is now safe in Iberia,” continued StevieJey. “You see, Subius cares for his friends, he makes sure that he joins the side that has the power to take care of him.
“You, of course, care very little of friends. Using Kan to gain access to me, with little regard for his safety, and knowing full well I have little interest in a person who belongs to a fallen House. You would have done so much better on your own, but of course you wouldn’t want to risk yourself in such dangerous games.”
Several troops were now entering the chambers, the purple stripes around their helmets identifying them as Yurey’s Guards. There were six of them, now standing behind Kan, Raisinus and Subius, who had jumped forward. Each had a hand on their sword, still sheathed. Yurey, standing next to the Consular, took no chances, and drew his blade.
Raisinus continued to glare at the Consular, who just smiled back. The game was up, and his plan had failed. There was little he could do, but hope for mercy from StevieJey.
He refused to believe he would get any.
Shocking everyone, Senator Raisinus of Southern Italy hurled himself forward at the Consular, clearing the table and crashing into his enemy. Before Yurey could even react, there was a flash of steel from Branius’ dagger as it was revealed from within his toga, and thrust into the Consulars chest.
In the sudden confusion, Kan revealed his own dagger, and stabbed it into the heart of Subius, the man who had betrayed them. He himself fell as several suddenly drawn swords from the Elite Guards slashed across his body.
Yurey, the closest man to Raisinus, swung for the Senator, who managed to roll out of the way and jump up. The Guards were now moving towards him though, trapping him against the chamber corner.
“Rome cannot be led on the whims of one man,” he said, not pleading, for he knew he was doomed. “StevieJey would have led us to ruin.”
“That is not for you to decide.” said Yurey, “But for the people.”
Raisinus swung at him with the dagger, but failed to strike. Yurey simply stabbed the sword into the Senator’s back, and he fell.
As the Guards dragged out the bodies, Yurey kneeled by the Consular, who was still in shock from Raisinus’ attack.
“I am alright,” said StevieJey, quietly. “Nothing too critical. Are they both dead?”
“Yes, Consular,” said Yurey. “Subius has fallen also.”
“Saves you the bother, then.” StevieJey grinned as Yurey helped him to his feet. “Raisinus’ attempt at power is crushed - it was doomed from the start. I have the Generals, the Senators, and soon all the people of Rome behind me. A new order has risen to rule the Republic!”
He coughed, clutching at the wound in his chest. Yurey held him steady as the last of the Guards left. The plot had failed, and the Republic was to be ruled under a new power…
