Heart of the Republic - A Rome: Total War AAR

Part Thirty-Three
The House of StevieJey IV
211 BC

The Senate Building was not quite filled to capacity, but it had never seen quite as many high-level Romans as it did today. Nor had it ever seen quite the mixing of Senators and Generals, though both were keeping to their respective groups. Several places were left empty, to remember the fallen Generals and Captains or the recent wars.

Consular StevieJey did not enter alone. His personal guards, led by Yurey, were a common sight already, but recently the senators had become used to seeing him alongside Kan’ Sharuminar III, their recent friendship assumed to be some attempt at regaining some power for Sharuminar’s weakened House. Raisinus Branius was all too happy to let such beliefs spread among the Senators.

The return to Rome

With all members present now present, StevieJey took his seat and began.

“The war in Iberia is nearly over. Major resistance has crumbled except in the south at Gades, where our new army has just landed. I have received word that Astorga has fallen, and that the last settlements of Iberia are being marched upon. This war will be over soon, well within the decade it was predicted to take according to my plans.” He finished, triumphantly.

“What of the post-war costs?” asked Subius. “We’ve all heard the rumours of Carthago Nova being in constant uprising, as well as the many bands of rebel forces plaguing our reinforcements in the forests. Can our treasury afford repairing the Iberian provinces, let alone bringing them to Roman standards. Even the Gallic sectors remain underdeveloped.”
“Of course he can’t,” Raisinus responded before the Consular could. “My provinces in Southern Italy are under constant blockade from the Sarmatians, so we have no money coming in from overseas empires. Where is the great Roman Navy to protect our docks?”
“Away defending us from the ‘threat’ of Carthage,” answered Ironmanus, “who haven’t dared attack us for over twenty years. Away fighting false threats while the real enemy has free access to the Roman capital!”

The entire attack had been well rehearsed, of course. Most Senators of the Republic remained angry over the considerable leeway StevieJey and the Generals had in running things, and it was quite easy for Raisinus to gain their support in discrediting the Consular. In addition, himself, Ironmanus and Subius represented the entire Italian peninsula - a powerful trio in the Senate, if they worked together.

They had expected StevieJey to repeat the old arguments that the Roman blockade of Carthage was all that stood between civilization and total destruction. They had even expected him to bring up the problems in the north, where PrinceScamp had been threatened by a massive Sarmatian army time and time again, and how funds were going towards reinforcing the Roman general (no wonder, he was openly supportive of StevieJey’s policies). The Consulars response was quite unusual however. He jumped out of his chair, and quite happily declared “I agree!”

They had not expected that.

“I quite agree,” the Consular repeated, “That there is a major threat of being attacked on multiple fronts, and something must be done about it. Iberia was just the prelude - I wanted to be sure that our western frontiers were well protected. Carthage and Sarmatia are very different from the barbarians on the Spanish peninsula - larger, stronger and with far better experience in open warfare. We will need the best of Rome’s resources, and the Iberian war was designed to remove the weak from the strong. ”
He paused, ready for the outburst that was about to come.
“Carthage has been a blight on the western Mediterranean for too long. I intend to bring them under Roman control, and end the threat once and for all!”

An eruption of voices filled the building. Completely ignoring the rules of the Senate, both Generals and Senators alike cried out, some in opposition and some in support. Nothing could quite be made out above the noise, before General Yurey stepped forward from his seat near StevieJeys, and the room fell silent. Nobody dared cross the chief of the Elite Guard.

“I have seen the Carthaginian Empire myself.” he said, just loud enough for all to hear. “It has returned to its former status, and is preparing for war. All its leaders are waiting for is for the Sarmatian and Gallic navies to break a hole in the blockade, and they can send their foul warriors upon Rome!”
“But we don’t have the gold to fund another war,” shouted Raisinus. “The Gallic frontiers, Iberia - the Sarmatian attacks at Iuvavum?”
“My troops can withstand the Sarmatian hordes,” PrinceScampey responded smugly. “Send the reinforcements south to Carthage.”
“It will not be necessary for you to fight and die as pointlessly as Captainus did,” said StevieJey. “You will get your troops, and we will gain additional funds from the mines of Iberia that are being constructed. It will be more than enough to raise a new army of Rome to invade Carthage.”

A new voice was raised among the Generals, it was from one of the few who opposed the interventionist attitude Rome had been taking. General Tillus III addressed the consular directly.
“What of the contribution my father made? Of the Raid on Carthage that you promised would end their threat to Rome forever? The only reason you sit in that chair is from your promise that we would never need to fight overseas again.”
“With respect, General, your father failed. He refused to destroy all of Carthage as ordered, and he returned before my plan was complete. You shall be glad to know that you will have the chance to atone for his mistake. Now please, sit down.” StevieJey’s tone was cold, and his last statement had not been a request. He waited for the murmuring to die down, and continued.
“The Republic is going through change. We are the dominant power in the Mediterranean, and we must put down any threats to our existence. Carthage is that threat, and we shall finish the war they started thirty-five years ago.” StevieJey rose and began for the door, Yurey close behind. Before he passed through the doors, he suddenly stopped, as if remembering something, then turned and spoke to the Senators.
“I wouldn’t like to think you were getting too comfortable with your positions. I believe that after this war we will need Governors for the far regions of Africa to bring Roman rule to the conquered.”

The Senate did not disband after the Consular left. Debates (probably more fair to call them arguments) flared up between separate groups. Most of the Generals were eager for war, while the Senators continued to argue about the stability of the Republic as it was. The populace of Rome were resistant to any sort of overseas wars - an invasion of Carthage could be a catalyst for disaster!

Between all of it, the conspirators, led by Raisinus, Sharuminar, Subius and Ironmanus realised that the Consulars final threat had been directed at his enemies. Not a threat of death, but of being sent to the farthest frontiers of the Republic - as good as non-existent in the Senate. If they were to end StevieJey’s reign, it would have to be soon, before the Carthaginian war began…

hey you can feel free to update whenever I update :p

anywayyyy... yes I would like to thank the senate for my honourable mention... I'd also like to thank whoever stabbed me.... that was great guys, we did it!

I don't really have anything to do with it, seeing as i'm sitting up in gaul, but destroying carthage sounds good to me.

Some people here are missing the point.

and are also missing on free concubines and wine.

So, if Stevejay is consular for life...

And Raisin will succede him..

And Raisin has concubines...

Raisin, send me a dozen concubines and a campaign against the sarmations you have my support.

If we should campaign ANYWHERE, it should be in BRITAINNIA, we need proper preparation before marching blindly to AFRICA! Down with SteveJay, up with Kan!

Part Thirty-Four
The House of StevieJey V
211 BC

The sun had long since set over Rome, and the streets were remarkably quiet. It had been almost a month since StevieJey had decided to invade Carthage again, though the political fallout continued to be felt in the capital. It had not taken long for word to spread of the upcoming offensive, and dissent among the populace had risen. StevieJey had not taken the harsh measure of introducing a curfew, but the large number of Yurey’s Elite Guards now patrolling did make venturing outside at night an intimidating affair.

Two figures however, were walking through the streets. Senators Raisinus Branius, Kan Sharuminar and Subius moved swiftly towards the mansion of StevieJey, situated on the Palatine Hill. Fearing that they had little time left to act - Ironmanus had already been sent to western Iberia as a governor - they had to put their plans into action immediately.

The guards at the gate had already drawn their weapons by the time the senators arrived.
“Halt, citizen.” the closest one said as the three approached. “The Consular does not wish to see anyone at this time.”
“Quiet, Heriticus.” replied Kan in a hushed voice. “It’s Sharuminar. Let us through.”
“Hullo sir!” The guard’s demeanour completely changed. “You can go through, but your friends-”
“StevieJey requested their presence, they’re fellow senators.”
“Ah, well then. On you go.”

The house of StevieJey

The guard hadn’t seemed quite convinced if this was allowed, but the senators were through. Kan’s friendship with the Consular hadn’t just been spent talking about the latest activities at the races. Acquaintances with the mansion staff, as well as memorising it’s layout, greatly contributed to the trio making their way through the building without meeting many people. Those they did see were easily turned away.

StevieJey had been sitting in one of his many chambers for some time. The work of a Consular was never lazy, and at the moment there was fears of a plague spreading from Greece, rebellion in Iberia and an annoying Gallic presence in their former lands. He was partially annoyed, partially relieved to be interrupted by three guests.
“Kan! Pleasure as always, though I’m not sure I can say the same thing for your friends.”
Raisinus responded before Sharuminar could. “Consular, we believe that you are no longer working for the people of Rome, and are instead fighting for personal-”
“Yes, yes,” interrupted StevieJey. He dropped his quill onto the table and stood up. “I know the accusations and your own thirst for power. However, you do realise that killing me isn’t going to make Rome’s problems just disappear? Not when I have most of the Generals behind me.”
On cue, Yurey stepped up from behind the Consular. Raisinus, for his part, looked shocked.

“Don’t think I don’t know of your plans, Branius.” said StevieJey, smiling, “Yurey is quite the expert in finding out other people’s business. I do believe he had help, though.”
“Senator Subius proved smart enough to realise the direction Rome was taking.” said Yurey. “If it weren’t for him we would never have discovered your game.”
Kan glanced back at Subius, who had withdrawn to the far wall. Raisinus continued to glare at the Consular, but said nothing.

“Ironmanus is now safe in Iberia,” continued StevieJey. “You see, Subius cares for his friends, he makes sure that he joins the side that has the power to take care of him.
“You, of course, care very little of friends. Using Kan to gain access to me, with little regard for his safety, and knowing full well I have little interest in a person who belongs to a fallen House. You would have done so much better on your own, but of course you wouldn’t want to risk yourself in such dangerous games.”

Several troops were now entering the chambers, the purple stripes around their helmets identifying them as Yurey’s Guards. There were six of them, now standing behind Kan, Raisinus and Subius, who had jumped forward. Each had a hand on their sword, still sheathed. Yurey, standing next to the Consular, took no chances, and drew his blade.
Raisinus continued to glare at the Consular, who just smiled back. The game was up, and his plan had failed. There was little he could do, but hope for mercy from StevieJey.

He refused to believe he would get any.

Shocking everyone, Senator Raisinus of Southern Italy hurled himself forward at the Consular, clearing the table and crashing into his enemy. Before Yurey could even react, there was a flash of steel from Branius’ dagger as it was revealed from within his toga, and thrust into the Consulars chest.
In the sudden confusion, Kan revealed his own dagger, and stabbed it into the heart of Subius, the man who had betrayed them. He himself fell as several suddenly drawn swords from the Elite Guards slashed across his body.
Yurey, the closest man to Raisinus, swung for the Senator, who managed to roll out of the way and jump up. The Guards were now moving towards him though, trapping him against the chamber corner.
“Rome cannot be led on the whims of one man,” he said, not pleading, for he knew he was doomed. “StevieJey would have led us to ruin.”
“That is not for you to decide.” said Yurey, “But for the people.”
Raisinus swung at him with the dagger, but failed to strike. Yurey simply stabbed the sword into the Senator’s back, and he fell.

As the Guards dragged out the bodies, Yurey kneeled by the Consular, who was still in shock from Raisinus’ attack.
“I am alright,” said StevieJey, quietly. “Nothing too critical. Are they both dead?”
“Yes, Consular,” said Yurey. “Subius has fallen also.”
“Saves you the bother, then.” StevieJey grinned as Yurey helped him to his feet. “Raisinus’ attempt at power is crushed - it was doomed from the start. I have the Generals, the Senators, and soon all the people of Rome behind me. A new order has risen to rule the Republic!”
He coughed, clutching at the wound in his chest. Yurey held him steady as the last of the Guards left. The plot had failed, and the Republic was to be ruled under a new power…

hmm.... despite my efforts I am still dead... and its not like I can even do the whole Obi Wan thing and provide ghost advice

damn you foreign assassins!
