Council of Nations News Report
NEW CHAIRMAN ELECTIONS AHEAD. Stockholm, Scandinavia. The collapse of the Council of Nations in Switzerland seems to have been only a temporary respite for the diplomats of the Council. With the conclusion of the war several new nominees have emerged for the Chairmanship, all espousing different views for the world after the recent conclusion to the war. Both Germany and Russia have returned to the Council's table to help with the globalization of the organization. The canidates are:
Robert Taft (USA): Anti-alliance system canidate, very vocal against the great alliances he believes caused the war to begin with. Main goal is to restrict the power of large alliances across the globe
Molotov (USSR): Anti-imperialism, pro-communist, wants the world to reform its treatment of the proletariat. Main goal is to reestablish communist reputation globally.
Ayatullah Khan (Afghanistan): Prince of Afghanistan, pro-Islam, but also a hands-off canidate for Council of Nations on domestic affairs of nations. Main goal is to protect Islamic interests within the Council
Fransico Franco (Spain): Ex-military leader, pro-imperialism and heavily pro-European League. Main goal is to support European continental unification.
SPECIAL: End of the War!
NEW NATIONS ESTABLISHED. Victory of the Allies over the Common Front International has led to the recognition of several nationalist groups across Europe. The separate conference between Dar-al-Islam and Serbia led to recognition of some Serbian possessions and Islamic forces moved into other portions of the Balkans to create the fundamentalist states of Albania and Bosnia. Elsewhere in Europe plebscites were held to determine the fates of Austria and the Netherlands. The former remained part of the Second Reich, as shattered Austrian nationalist feelings did not survive the partition of their old Empire. However, Dutch nationalists ran a successful campaign and the nation of Holland has been established under Council of Nations supervision.
SOUTH AFRICA UNITED. Pretoria, South Africa. Having gained the largest amount of territory in the persecution of the war and having established a working democratic government, the Republic of South Africa has experience a minor economic boom in the year following the conclusion of the war. Fuelled by exploitation of new resources and the diamond rush, the South African economy seems to be on the rise. Domestically however, the new government has seen the creation of the Fascist, Liberal, Communist, and Conservative Parties all vying for power. So far the Liberals have the lead in political power, but communist influence grows daily, pushing out more conservative elements. (+1 Private Enterprise)
BRITISH ISLANDS IN RECESSION. Dublin, Eire. The cost of waging the war on Germany and the CFI has become apparent in the British Islands. The cost of mantaining the military apparatus of the British has wieghed upon the economies of the British island nations. Caused by the return of veterans from the field, unemployment has risen as women refuse to leave the jobs they took in the absence of the men at war. (-1 Base IC for Eire, Scotland, and Wales)
NIPPON WAVERING. Tokyo, Nippon. With the end of the war, the Communist Party has gained extensive strength in Nipponese politics. Having gained credit for ending the war and drastically changing the Nipponese economic field, the Communists have become more powerful than ever before. Despite everything, the communists have begun showing open fractures in their field as the party divides into different factions leaning from liberals to the furthest left of the commies. Despite the growth of Nipponese influence in the Indian Ocean, the radical economic shift taken by the communists has drastically reduced the economic productivity of the nation. FRANCE COLLAPSING. Paris, France. The past twenty years have been devastating to France and the French people. First devastated by the effects of the Communist War, then wrecked by its loss of colonies as they were taken by Great Powers, and just as it recovered it entered the devastating Second Global War. With conscription leading to hundreds of thousands of deaths, France has had the largest casualty percentage out of all the warring nations. Exacerbating the situation is the famine which has plagued the nation as its fields were overrun by the opposing armies. It is estimated that 50% of those remaining in France are starving or close to starving. However, this is not as many people as it would sound. Foreign census bureaus estimate that France’s population is now 15% of what it was in 1910. The most extreme example of this population decline are the empty cities of France. Cities like Caen, Brest, and Lyon have become virtual ghost towns as its inhabitants have fled the war and destruction. Despite the heavy damage done to the nation in the war, Marshal Petain retains his absolute control over the French government. The military has so far supported his regime as French tanks level riotous barricades in Paris. (-5 Base IC for France; Global Reputation moves to Disliked)
GERMANY STANDS STRONG. Berlin, Germany. Despite great defeats in battle and the great invasion across the Rhine, Germany has retained much of its pre-war holdings and power. Though German reparations to the Allied powers are high in cost, Germany has retained most of its industrial strength and military capacity. The Kaiser has managed to keep the vital resources of Central Africa and the even more vital industries of Alsace-Lorraine. Though the loss of Amsterdam and Holland did lightly effect the German industrial strength, the effect is minor and without consequence. Finally, since Germany did not fully mobilize until the end of the war and never conscripted like other powers, the nation’s economy has managed to avoid the worst of the recession affecting much of Europe. (-2 Base IC for Germany)
IBERIA RESURGENT. Madrid, Spain. Spain’s first great victory since the conquest of Mexico has resounded through Iberia as the Spanish have gained a resurgence of pride. The annexation of the French Pyrennes has given Spain a vital boost to their resource production and the arrival of masses of French immigrants has given a population boom to man the new industries created by the war. Furthermore the loss of Angola has forced Portugal to rely on Spanish markets and resources to develop Portuguese industries. Portugal has therefore joined the European recession while Spain’s economy has grown. (-2 Base IC for Portugal; +3 Base IC for Spain)
ITALY VICTORIOUS. Rome, Italy. The Treaty of Munich has given Italy the largest amount of reparations of all the victorious nations while gaining only a small amount of territory from France. However, the German Operation Bismarck left most of northern Italy in ruins, devastating Italian industrial strength and the peacetime economy. Population losses have caused immigration from Italian North Africa where a lack of jobs has caused the population to migrate to the factories of Milan, where a lack of people has open many new opportunities for work. Furthermore, the heavy casualties sustained by conscripts in the Alps campaign has greatly effected Italian home life, though victory has prevent a dissent growth like that suffered in France. Through time Italy should be able to recover from the recession to move to greater glories. (-1 Base IC for Italy)
