Many Leaders Game 3 - Prince Domination

Nice graphs, Ozzy! :goodjob:
I'm okay with all the schedule stuff. Now that I got into yet another SG (never learn), it'll be good to me.

And this time I'm the last in two important categories: GNP and beakers/turn. In my defense, I have to say I :whipped: the settler on turn 49. This has got to change! :trouble:

I see almost everyone has played except me :mischief: , Ill play this tommorow for sure. Didn't except everyone to play so quickly

I chose Lincoln b/c a) nobody chose him yet, and b) i haven't played him yet. PHI, i think, is good for the SE, which i think complements the endless warring of a Dom game. Hopefully, i can get the hang of it since it's only on Prince. CHA is good, too, both for the PHI trait for bigger cities, and more specialists, but also for the decreased xp requirements for promos which means a more veteran army, which is always good :goodjob:

Spoiler :

first off, i sure didn't get as much luck from my huts as some ~ i agree with (was it kodii?) who said we should've disabled them; it'll certainly skew the results, but oh well ~

okay, so i went 5 turns over b/c i was anxious to get that settler out. Losing that settler was a real blow. I should have 1 city and another on the way, and here I am with uMgung so close. It looks like an awfully ripe target as it has a lone warrior defending it. i wonder if i could take it w/2 warriors?? I maybe would've if i had a 2nd city up already

So here is my turn one report, I will now catch up with turn 2

Spoiler :
So Pacal 2..

Now he is financial with a UB that gives + 3 Happy, so the plan is simply to lervage this by building a big and strong financially healthy empire. I will aim to keep my economy healthy by gradually conquering the AI. It is slower than crushing them quickly (leaving a very weak economy at the end) but it is somehow very dominating as it does literally crush the AI with no risk!
For the chess players out there a nice slow Karpovian crush. Obviously this strategy works very well with expansive which supports cities growing large rapidly.

Well as I am the last report I feel you can be spared another picture of our starting location. Having popped the hut with the scout I could see no compelling reason to move and in those circumstances I always settle in place trusting the map generator to have given me horses or copper.

As my starting techs weren’t great for initial worker actions I started out researching Agriculture -> Animal Husbandry whilst building a Warrior. Post this I was size 2 and ready to start a worker who would have some useful techs to employ when built.

Scout went NE initially then headed W. We had good luck with huts.

We met Isabella and Shaka whilst scouting. Shaka first and if he was close would need some thought. Isabella naturally founded Buddhism

With our scouting root we had found the lovely wheat / gold spot that others had located settling there on turn 43.

So at turn 50 here is what we have

Plan from here.

1. The AI is more resistant to an Axe rushes in BTS so against Shaka it needs to be thought through, but is probably inevitable! Isabella can wait.
2. I am fairly well placed for an Oracle Col slingshot but think Civil Service is probably out of reach but….
3. Copper City will be settled soon and perhaps a clams deer coastal city to the south.

Done. I might decide to post these reports on my webpage from the next round forward, but decided to post it here this round so nobody has to wait more.

Basically, I chose Asoka for 2 reasons.. #1 - I didn't want to take the more popular choices other players might want for this game, and #2 - Spiritual allows for massive versatility, and organized is a great warring trait. The UU, which is Fast worker shines in a start like this, with alot of forest, ofcourse I could not have known that when I chose Asoka :mischief:

Spoiler :

I started off deciding to go for religion, since this is prince level and medium and small probably wont have alot of happiness sources since there is very little land on the map. Went polythiesm while working the forest silk, just to guarantee I wont miss hinduism. The forest silk cut down the research from 12 to 11 turns. I set build to Stonehenge immedietely, putting all extra hammers into it until I want to build my first worker.

On turn 6, met our first neighbor...

UGH. Crap, if I had known she would show her face right next to me, I would have never gone early religion. Not only is she impossible to trade with with difference religions (Izzy always goes buddhism and im going hinduism), but I would have just attacked her and taken her holy city rather than wasting turns going for religion myself.. Sigh. Anyhow, continued exploration with my scout. First hut provided gold, second provided an extra scout, and I was able to grab Hinduism on turn 12, 2 turns after Izzy completed meditation and picked up buddhism. Met Shaka on turn 13, who is apparently even closer than Isabella. Well, 2 of the worst neighbors in the game. Diplomacy is out of question, I had initially planned to get great lighthouse and run a trade route economy on medium and small, but with these guys, Ill be killing them ASAP to take control of the island.

One of my scouts pops a mildly useful tech in 3480 BC.

Well, I really didn't need it here since im probably not going after any of those wonders, but it opens up monotheism and I wont have to waste turns researching this later.

After polytheism, my tech path was agriculture -> Animal Husbandry -> Bronze Working -> Wheel. Basic dotmap I have made

1 first because of corn and gold, to boost my research, 2 for a strong coastal city, and ? has 3 food resources so that can be a possible GP farm later on. I might change 1 to be a little more north, and 2 to be on top of the plains hill (Since I wont be going after Great ligthhouse any longer). Situation on final turn

Spoiler :

One of the good things about this format is the break between rounds, which gives you time to look at other people's saves and actually take a good look at your own game, especially the longview of where you're going.

As I played the last of my turns last week, I was convinced that axe-rushing Shaka was the best play available. Thinking about it, I'm not so sure. Instead I'm going to try for a CS slingshot and mace him instead, after I get Alphabet and hope I can get some trade value out of him (and Izzy for that point).

This may not actually work as neither are the most techy or giving of opponents but will help the long-term goal of getting Astronomy to push that Domination limit.

So lets play!

Settler for copper appears first turn. Luckily I already have a warrior parked on the spot, so don't have to worry about it being eaten :mischief:.

Lalibela founded.

Buddhism spreads and I swap religions to curry up to Izzy.

Oracle BIADL 1240BC  Had only just researched Priesthood myself.

Axe rush it is.

Until I see this.

So I research to Construction and start building catapults.

Shaka has stolen a couple of my selected sites but hopefully will pay next turnset.

This was a pretty poor turnset, as I wasn't expecting Shaka to get his defenses up that quickly. It should work out next time though (he says hopefully). Serves me right for putting him in the game.

Research Path: Writing, Mysticism, Polytheism, Priesthood, Alphabet, Fishing (trade), Mathematics, Masonry, Archery (trade), Iron Working (trade)Construction,

Spoiler :
I had a terrible case of one-more-turn-itis after my first 50 turns so I actually finished all 100 in one sitting. And that was probably a mistake, because of my sloppy play. The RNG was kind though.

Sloppy Play. For whatever reason, my tech path looked something like this:
Archery, Writing, Pottery, Mathematics, Metal Casting (unfinished)

I don't know if it was a good idea, but I did this:

And this:

And along the way I got a GG that I settled in Aachen. My plethora of axemen are spreading around the island as fogbusters.

After playing, I wondered whether my future teching would have been faster if I had not eliminated Izzy and waited until later. I would now have to turtle my way to the other (larger?) continent.

I also wondered why the heck I began Metal Casting when I could have teched to them Rathauses.

All I really know is that I really need to shape up my gameplay and rely less on the RNG if I want to get to domination the fastest. ;)

I should probably play less like a conquest victory too

I won't elaborate on builds etc, because that would be boring and stupid because I would fill up the page with "axeman" and "chopped".

T100
EDIT: Damn you for beating me to first by just seconds, Ozbenno! :p

Pholkhero
Spoiler :

Losing the settler. Ouch.

Do hope it gets better from here.

Really liked Lincoln in the last MLG game - I found him a really good combination to play.

Good luck!

In a stroke of genius i deleted my screenshots from turnset 2

Here's the gist.
Spoiler :

Turnset 2. Want to settle the gold, and grab some land to pressure Shaka before he pressures me. I get these two cities, but He grabs the horse site with food.

Prophet arrives and he'll be settled in the gold city, Hastings.

I want to build libraries and get some specialists going, but I need to spam axeman just because Shaka is there.

He's building up a bit of an attack force in the south so I hold 5 axes there.

He's so predictable.

Plenty of good land to settle while Shaka thinks about attacking, as he surely will.

Well, I can say I made the report earlier than you three, but I didn't post yesterday due to brain fart. Well, nevermind. Here it is.

I'm glad to know that Quack liked my twisted idea of putting the reports on the personal website. ;) Welcome new members!

Not to read yours....

@Ozzy:
Spoiler :
You chicken! you only needed more axes than you thought about! :p

@mice:
Spoiler :
I see you "stole" my Ivory site. Maybe now I can compare it with the AI's choice that I settled with. :mischief:

@Kodii:
Spoiler :
WOW! Nice axing there! I actually think I chickened out by letting Shaka settle the Ivory city, but I blame the Great Wall for it. Well, now you can join the Lonely hearts club!

More from the Mongol Hordes.

Spoiler :
Turn 50 saw me with a settler ready to found another city which i promptly did, Ning-Hsia. i'm now set on axe rushing Shaka so my cities are set to build workers and barracks until the copper is hooked up.

Turn 53 Buddhism spread into Karakorum, i decided to revolt to this religion to curry favour with Izzy for a while

Turn 54 Shaka came calling for Open Borders which i excepted on so i scouted out his remaining unknown lands (Knowledge is Power)

Turn 55 Agriculture was learnt and i set out on the path to Horseriding and Keshiks and copper was hooked up ready for the axes

Turn 70 Horse Riding was learnt and mathmatics was next on my list

Turn 80 finally cancel my open borders with Shaka and Turn 81 saw the declaration of war by this time shaka had four cities but my plan was to walk straight past Nobamba and go straight for Ulundi and Mnung (you know what i mean)

Turn 84 Ulundi was razed

Turn 85 Horses were hooked up and gers and Keshiks were ordered

Turn 87 A GG was born in beshablik which i sent to Karakorum as a MI

Turn 91 Mnung was razed and Shakas copper was gone

Turn 97 Kwad which had been founded on the site of Ulundi was razed.

Turn 99 another GG was born and put to work as an MI in Karakorum

Turn 100 saw Mathematics learnt

My current plan is to finish of Shaka and then decide what to do about Izzy, she still only has two cities so i don't know wether it would be worth letting her live for trade purposes or just get rid of her to get the Buddhist holy city

I have so far Killed 37 Archers and 2 Axes!!!!

Karakorum can now churn out combat III Keshiks....He he he he

@mice-thanks got the images working now

Augustus Caesar reporting for glorious and mighty Rome:

Spoiler :

I knew it was going to be a pretty active session.

Having leveraged the possibility of rushing one of the two, I had, at first, had a strong preference for Izzy. However, I don’t want the Impis on my land anytime soon, so I think about going towards Shaka first.

Plan:
Chop/whip several axes while waiting for IW, rush Ulundi and any other Zulu city standing. Send some Praetorians if necessary. The third city will have to wait ;).

We are third in power, behind Shaka, but my chopping staff seems to indicate that this is likely to change pretty fast.

I have lost one scouting warrior in the north-east, while Rome has been heavily pumping axes for initial wave.

IW revealed iron to the north, on grassland near gold. One settler will be stuck between military to get this spot.

Declare war on Shaka on turn 62. Five axes are on the way for the first wave. Three more to come very soon. Hope to have him pants down. On the first turn, Nobamba is in ruins with no casualties.

In Rome, I settle Cumae next to Iron/Gold on the coast, and have a worker start his mine. I hope to pump Praetorians very soon.

I got the road to the Zulu done at time for my invasion, which allowed me to catch one of his workers. You never can have too many workers ;)
Writing and Iron in 67 turn, started to chop Praetorians with whatever wood left nearby.

I attack Ulundi with six axes and a warrior ( important to notice, see below )vs 2 Impi, Axe and an Archer.
I captured the city losing 3 axes, finally winning with a scouting warrior ;). The Zulu have one city left to the east.

As first Preatorians started leaving Rome and Antium, I got a Great General for my Zulu campaign. I decided to make him Military Instructor in Antium.
My military campaign was coming slowly to an end, I decided to use my new CR2 Praetorians on Izzie, and catch her also pants down ( though, when you look at her, you wonder why you would like to catch her pants down… ).

After Pottery, I started Mysticism.

My last offensive on Zulu started in turn 77, with 1 Praetorian and 4 axes. I lost two of the latter, and the Zulu city was still up, defended by a heavily wounded impi and axe. Next turn Zulu were no more.

I declared war on Izzie in turn 80, going after Madrid with 4 Praetorians ( more on the way ). In the meantime, Oracle and Great Wall were BIDL.

It turned out that Izzy was pants down, running like a mad after I don’t know what. The only force in Madrid were 2 archers.
It was no surprise as on turn 83, Madrid fell.

Barcelona was even funnier, with no archer inside ;)

I have researched Hunting for the deer resource, and now starting Polytheism. Trying to catch up the religion side. Now that we have a holy Buddhist Madrid…

And here I am, in T86, Alone in my island. Well, I don’t count the small barb outpost that I’m going to catch up soon.

Zulu proved to be a worthy warring partner, but Izzy… Nothing, literally nothing. I have chopped too much troops for this target.

On the turn 88 I got, and kept, Gaul. My Asterix culture found it funny to keep it ;)

I have followed Polytheism by Priesthood, on the religious path to Organized Religion. I should be trying Pyramids pretty soon given my Industrious nature ;)

On the build path, I have managed several monuments and libraries. I think disbanding units like warriors, even some axes, my research is really too bad.

A settler was up in Cumae, and I went for a double-gold wheat tile north to Rome. I know my eco is already BAD, but I will try to get it well with all this gold. And so Neapolis saw the daylight in turn 96 ( seventh city so far… too much, my instinct says ).

Masonry was followed by Monotheism.

On several last turns, Confucianism and Christianity were found IDL.
I followed my building libraries/monuments path, setting up granaries where necessary.

Rome started Pyramids, though with no more forests to chop, it will be rather difficult.

Here is a small empire overview on turn 100:

What went ok:
- Zulu invasion, Spain invasion

What went wrong:
- too many units chopped given Izzy’s military…
- too many cities I’m afraid… Going to rush currency as soon as Organized Religion is on

In the next episode we will meet Augustus spreading Buddhism everywhere and trying to get the shrine in Madrid, researching economy knowledge and trying to get an economic wonder like The Great Lighthouse ( though it will be difficult ).

okay, to be like everyone else, I have played

Spoiler :

and let's just say that i think the game is over for me :(

and i can pinpoint it to losing that dang settler!

techwise, i swapped from IW to Myst in order to build Monuments for the extra happy and border pops, then went back to it: IW > Maths > Masonry > Const (not finished)

So, with my next settler finally out and about, i decided to lift an idea i got from others by reading the first turn reports ~ going for that gold city before the copper:

However, look what I found in the next turn or two:

Cripes!! Can't i catch at least ONE break?!?

I put out another settler and went SE with him to the Horse/Deer/Clam spot, but i think i would've been better off sticking a city SW of the copper right outside of the barb city's range.

I got my horses hooked up as soon as possible to crank out some chariots, and maybe take a city or two from someone ~ the barbs at the very least!

Well, i got one:

I hurried to hook up that iron, but i'm just finishing the road there. On turn 101 (why can't i play the right number of turns?? ), i see this ugly mug:

and this small stack

lucky for him, and unlucky for me, i've got nary a warrior and a chariot in my cities ~ good thing Shaka came prepared with plenty of Impi's :D

I *might* be able to whip out a couple axes if i can get that iron hooked up soon, but sheesh! Why didn't I send out that settler with an escort??

@ Ozzie ~ sure, rub it in!

@ Kodii and Pawelo ~ nice playing!

@ TriviAl ~ when you can, read my report; you'll see unfortunate that really was :(

Here's the next round 2000BC > 375BC.

Spoiler :

Turnset 2 = The Zulu Bloodbath

I am 3rd most advanced, it turns out. Shaka is 4th, Izzy is 7th.

Construction
Paris. Axes (1320BC, 1200BC, 1120BC, 1080BC, 1040BC, 975BC, 925BC, 875BC - stopped counting around here.)
Lyons. Axes (1160BC, 1040BC, 925BC, 875BC - stopped counting around here)

I get that building rate out of Paris by doing this to it:

And chopping the crap out of the forests. Not efficient without maths, but I really want to smush Shaka.

After war starts, I just keep building at pace. Feel the best way to lose a war is to slack the pressure off.

In 875 I am in position to have a pop at the zulu. Have maneuvered my stack so it is only 2 squares from Ulundi - will decapitate that first and then mop up. Makes sense to nail the production centre first IMO.

WAR!
850BC - an axe crushes a zulu archer outside ulundi (69%).
825BC - costs 2 axes, but I plow through feeble Zulu defenses:

750BC - take uMungus - or whatever it's called. Without loss. 3 X 75% victories, which pleases me! No more copper for those naughty zulus.
700BC - raze kwaDukza to the South - costs 1 axe.
600BC - Capture Bullywao - costs 1 axe. IBT an impi and axe attacked one of my axe stacks. Along with the city, I now have a pair of CR 3 axes... Adolphus is born - first great general. Save him for later.
475BC - Raze Nobamba at the cost of an axe. Get partisan warriors next to my axe stacks. Poor little guys.
400BC - my scouting axe finds the last city in this state:

Decide to chance it at 63% and things go well! The zulu are destroyed

yielding this rather unfortunate event chain (for them).

Random war stat:
Axes - built 17, lost 7 and have 11. According to my stats page. Perhaps upgraded a warrior and forgot?
Killed 24 Archers, 9 Axes and 10 Warriors (although some of those warriors are Barbs).

Science:
Writing (1920BC) > Pottery (1720BC) > Meditation (1560BC) > Priesthood (1440BC) > Code of Laws (675BC) > Iron Working (500BC) > Sailing (425BC) > Polytheism (unfinished)

Persued CoL vigorously, but lost the race in 800BC. After that, decided to grab IW for jungle clearance/seeing locations, sailing for galleys - then decided to head for monotheism.

Other significant events:
Founded Lyons in 1920BC.
1920BC - sign open borders with Shaka and Izzy. Minor early diplo boost and my scout can go investigate Zulu lands.
1680BC - connect up the copper.

Notice Izzy has built the hindu holy shrine. She also appears to have bugged out?

Sucks to be her.

General remarks:

Boy were the zulus tough. 6 cities spawned by the time I killed them. Think I hit them at the right point or things could have gotten really out of hand.

My plans:

Take Izzy - to put her out of her misery.

Push out some galleys - get out and see what lies beyond this island.

Engage the power of the organised trait. Courthouses everywhere and fill out the island nice and fast. Get a solid economic powerbase.

The economy isn't too bent right now. 6 cities and I can run positive at 60% research.

Intend to spread Hinduism via Organised religion. Switch to caste system and turn Ulundi into a GPP farm - pump out some great scientists.

Here's the nation at the end of the turnset:

Here is the save.

Have updated my front page post. Also added a bit about why I chose napoleon to my first game post.

Pholkhero
Spoiler :

That's some really tough stuff there. :(

Think you're right - that initial settler is so vital and such a big investment. Makes me think how often I do just what you did - no escort. Perhaps a long term revision is in order for my game...

Now Impis against chariots. Wishing you luck again. :(
