Many Leaders Game 5 - One City Challenge

I tried playing the chinese Qin Shi Huang w/ the start on the wine tile. Gave up at around 1900.

I'm eager to see how you guys fare!

It should be doable. Just need to get to Military Science or Rifling well ahead of the AI.

If you're interested in taking part in a MLG game the next one is taking sign ups at the end of this thread.

As the proud owner of the QSH game ( and as I didn't read the spoiler ) , I'll tell you, what is my plan:
- CS slingshot ( done )
- Massive wonder building ( on course )
- A wat + priests ( best option for prod pre-IW )
- Lib something high ( Steel ( iron depedant... working realations with ragnar for that ) or Rifling.... I think it is feasible )
- Spam rifles and/or cannons ( if necessary draft ) and push in Monty's direction while holding Gilga with forts + CG2 units ( 4 forts are enough to seal us from Gilga )
- Do a counterclockwise movement and sweep all oposition... if necessary build a fort ( 4 workers can build one in 1 turn after steam ) to hold ground

Do not know if you done something similar....

Spoiler :
and push in Monty's direction while holding Gilga with forts + CG2 units ( 4 forts are enough to seal us from Gilga )
This is actually a really good idea. Its just a shame my first war is going to be with Gilgamesh, instead.

Spoiler :
HEOMH last night so short report as I'm holding up the next round. Gilga also HEOHH. I had just discovered IW (BC 350), but not connected the Iron: as he had HAs, I couldn't get it connected in time, so off to Construction and hope to defend Bibracte with Archers...

Held him off thanks to a very weak stack attacking the capital across a river, though I did have to chop forest to get enough troops out. Gilga came at me with an exclusively HA army, so I was able to impale him once Iron was online. Peace in AD 780 for 175 cash from me: I could see WEs heading my way.

During the war I settled a GP, and Raggy DoWd Asoka, Monty went into WHEOOH, I settled a GM, and learnt Calendar, Currency, Aesthetics, Compass & Lit. Had a phony war with Asoka (whom Monty attacked). Traded in Alpha, HBR. HG & Mids BIFAL in 540ad.

My 1st war will be with Gilga too... but I have a cunning and devilish plan :p :
I've good relations with Monty, so when finally war breaks between me and Gilga ( hopefully in time to have 6/7 CG 2 bows fortified in a fort rigth in his way ) I'll ask some help in the war from Monty ( ATM he has a really high power and agg AI only makes him more loony, so it may be not even necessary to bribe him as soon as gilga starts to lose units ), let Monty to do some damage to Gilga and then dow him *devilish laugh* ( just have to find a way of not letting Ragnar to take advantage of that....)

Thanks Ozbenno - I replayed the game focusing on a different strategy. It's 1920 and I just finished the Viking, having killed off the Summeria and Asoka before.

Spoiler city screenshot 1921 - really not much of a spoiler :

General questions for OCC Conquest:
- do you raze all the improvements as you raze the cities? I did and it does slow me down considerably. I didn't need the coin, my reasoning (in theory) was that an empty unimproved land will not invite settlers from other civilizations. Also, I gambled and after razing the land (leaving only roads), I left it undefended. With 1 unit/turn production on OCC, I didn't have the 15+ units to spare. I left captured workers in the hills to keep the land visible, but indefensible.

At what point do you go for the nukes? (if you can get them)
pros: might decimate the oponents armies and slow down their cities
cons: global warming might really mess up my city

At this point I'm forced to DoW the Aztecs as I see their settler coming to take the Viking lands. I made a mistake of thinking I had enough time to research up to MechInf. I think I would have been better off getting the Nukes. His cavs/rifles outnumber me at about 8:1.

^^You did a terrible mistake ( IMHO, of course ;) ): you let loony Monty to the end.... Agg AI Monty really spams units and even a clear tech edge can be not enough to tackle him if you leave him without nothing to destroy and to pile up units. That is exactly why Monty will be the first civ I'll destroy, followed by Gilga and Asoka ( Can put Ragnar somewhere in the middle if i can get to arties before ( to not need iron for siege, like cannons do ) )

Got a break in my tight weekend schedule ( I'm currently in my birthday ( GMT time ,of course ) so I'll not have lots of time to play in the weekend :( )and played to 1400 AD
Spoiler :
Started the turnset by brokering Aesthetics ( left S paya unbuilt just for the tech still be of any value as bargaining chip )
Spoiler :

And started to build my own and personal Maginot line:
Spoiler :

After killing some Indian units ( was in war with them @ Monty request ), I decided to take peace... No need of distractions:
Spoiler :

But peace would not last :
Spoiler :

As I said previously, I'm after Ragnar's iron as a backup plan for cannons.

Some turns latter I decided that it was time to force fate:
Spoiler :

Not much to say... Gilga launched a decent stack on one of my forts and lost almost all of his units against 1 longbow of mine ( as I have SoZ that should hurt.... )

The war with Asoka would not last long though:
Spoiler :

I managed to end the wonder I wanted to snitch out of Gilga's nose ( he founded Tao ) and that was a crucial part of my plan:
Spoiler :

As I'm running only priests and have some GP settled this gives me the equivalent of a mine and a half, a pretty handy help for war times

And as we're talking of wars, I introduce you the state of the art in the warfare business:
Spoiler :

Some more military techs from my friend Raggie The Horned :
Spoiler :

I noticed that Monty was with hands full for a while.... I was chewing my nails until I saw this:
Spoiler :

:woohoo: Monty was going after Gilga ... all was falling in place

But the bitter part of bitter-sweet was coming:
Spoiler :

Ragnar Dowed Monty :gripe: ( most likely to be able of capturing some indian cities ). That puts me in a interesting dillemma: Dow Monty as planned or not?

Got Natio:
Spoiler :

And Monty got a city... 1 turn before of another stone in my shoe:
Spoiler :

Monty stack was reduced to rubble in that city and he was only able to keep it because of my help ( moved a CG 3 musket into town... looks that it scared Gilga enough lift the siege )

Some considerations:

I decided to try a old fashion cav rush... I left Lib @ 1 turn of finishing and will try to climb the stair to Rifling after finishing Mil trad ( that will allow cuiraseers with iron ).

The diplo situation is quite messy ATM and I fear that my fears came true: Monty had a spectacular drop in power and I think that he'll not hold if I join Gilga, Asoka and Ragnar in the pilling. But I don't want Monty as a vassal of no one and maybe I'll finally start a offensive war vs Gilga and maybe even give some help to Monty ( a thing that will ruin my relations with Ragnar :wallbash: ). I might have to bribe ragnar to peace ( I doubt that he'll acept, but... ) *spit on ground* .Well, I'll have some time to think about that , as only I had played so far AFAIK )

Better late than never ... (seems to be my most used statement of late ...).

Now it is just 3 more rounds to catch up.

Spoiler :

The Emergence of England

After some careful consideration on the map, decided to do what one would normally not do in an OCC starting map: settle on a resource.

The pig is the main consideration ... I needed the hammer (being non-industrious and non-aggressive). But I think I will pasture it first, and later convert to mine, and then once drama is done, back to pasture.

I will lose a floodplains here, but given the abundance of flood plains, it doesn't matter. As a matter of fact, it is possible to gain even more floodplains if I settled one more tile east

Anyway, now it is time to go wandering. For the huts and also to see who is out there:

2 techs, 1 map and 38 gold from hut, not bad. The AI (particularly Gilgamesh) are getting sloppy, allowing me to pop 2 huts so close to his borders.

I already had, by helping to popping your huts!

"Pleased" to meet me? Liar! You have "(Annoyed)" besides your name!

Ah ... sorry to disappoint you. England is gonna to have only one city, and it is gonna to be non-coastal, and it is gonna to be well-defended.

Live Long and Prosper to you as well, but you did the hand sign wrong.

Not very encouraging list of opponents for a conquest/domination game. Madman Monty is already annoyed, greedy Gilgamesh seems to be expanding fast, rogue Ragnar yet another agressive leader. The only normal guy is asoka, but he is far away.

So, there you go my first 50 turns.

Stay tuned for the next 50 turns, coming up very shortly.

Win Ivory with a culture war. Have to connect it though.
Trade Currency from Ragnar for Aesthetics and some gold

162
Monty got Ragnar into the war against Gilgi
So much for the 'friendship'

Gilgi has the Paya

165
AWat – Globe

I just love these pics everyone has already seen so many times :)

I would like to say that for all the time I'm in war with Gilgi (who is pretty occupied with Monty minions (who go through the meal hashing machine next to my border - poor buddy )) I haven't build a single military unit :D

Get two priest back to work

IBT
Lost a worker to a Sumerian suicide Chariot (this one was roading toward the Ivory)

166
GSci born and merged
Kill the chariot - pure vengance.

167
Gilgi speaks but doesn’t want to peace for a small tech

168
Monty lost a nice stack on Gigli city (this meat hasher I was speaking of before), I settle for peace and Litterature/Drama.
No need to be at war.

170
German revolt in Zimbur - no, it's not me.

171
Globe – University
Refuse to go HR for Ragnar (you don't expect me to quit Rep for your beutiful horns, do you?)…

Lib in one turn – switch to the Rifle path
Machinery

172
End of the world war – some more GG here and there (there especially, I have none - those will follow pretty soon )

175
Machinery – Guilds

177
University – Aqueduct
Trade Compass from Monty for Drama and some gold ( no need to deny it to him)

178
GSci born and merged

180
Aqueduct – Oxford
Guilds - Banking

181
HG BIDL - I decided not to chase it - I already have +2 health and I need other stuff

183
Gilgi asks for CS – here you are – I want peace until the Rifles
Banking – Printing Press

184
We are two million! In a single city!

188
Oxford – Spy (I’m too much spied by my neighbours)

189
PP – Rep Parts
Spy – Forge

190
Forge – Grocer

191
GA born – no merge, waiting for the first GA

193
Rep Parts – Lib
Grocer – Chitchen Itza
Gigli DoW Monty - up we go again. Good, this will get his stacks toward Monty while I'm going to backstab him with some shiny new Rifles :D

194
Liberalism – free Rifling – Nationalism

Chitchen (unfinished) – (1st)Rifle

195
Monty loses a former Hindu city

197
Rifle – Rifle (gonna say it many many times )
Upgrades from LBows to Rifles

198
Nationalism – Engineering
GA with the Artist
Switch civics to Mercantilism (Prophet)

199
Rifle – Rifle
Gilgi completes Chitchen

200
Engineering – Mil Tradition

So here we are, time to take a small break and rehearse before what seems to be the most long OCC turnset in SG history :)

Our small but POWERFUL country :

5 Rifles ready – 2 more to come then DoW Sumer. Time to have fun

Mil Tradition due in 5, then full Cavalry.
GA – 5 turns to go

And our Bismyville:

 these 5 towns & 2 villages

Globe, NE, Oxford in
Will have to get the IW and maybe the Street, though it’s pretty downhill from now

Happy times to come, some rifle vs bows fun :king:

I am catching up ... Round 2, Turn 51~100.

Spoiler :

Episode 2: The Establishment of England

Very little had happened ... I basically transformed the pasture into a mine, and started a few chops once mathematics is in for the pyramids ... which I netted at 750BC.

Haven't really made use of representation yet, but I did revolt once London grow into unhappiness. I am building the great library now, with the great engineer resulting from Pyramids in mind for Hanging Gardens. Thereafter original plans is to go for early Globe and CS. However, I am now worried with the lack of metals (damned). I think a detour to feudalism is needed else I will be lagging too far behind in power (which will be very unfortunate considering Monty is nearby ...). Good thing abt detouring to Feudalism is I will get monarchy, giving me 1 more happy (don't need to go globe too soon).

What I hated most is the following event:

Geez ... just 1 gold!!!! :gripe: :aargh: :gripe:

Churchill, Prime Minister of Worst Empire, Round 4 (820 AD - 1400 AD)

Spoiler :

Right into the turnset I was stuck in the war with Monty. Time to pay the beast.

This did hurt, but still giving up two techs (Monty was 1 turn from Polytheism anyway) is better than being dead. And I would have been dead, as I tested after the turnset...

I then pulled some trades to get into the tech game again.

I resumed work on TGL after the peace with Monty, as spamming more Archers would not have helped anyway. And I got it !

In this game I'm sure not the first one to bite the grass: Asoka is officially dead. Still he managed to adopt Caste System before and so he was dying in style at least !

Some more trades...

Sure, kick a Civilization when it's down...

And he is in WHEEOH mode again. That's not good...

Luckily he comes for Gilgamesh as his troops move through my land...

I finished the Globe. May my people now prosper !

One of the disadvantages of Slavery. An annoying event !

And finally he declares...

Monty took the border city on the Iron, but didn't raze it. Idiot ! Gilgamesh of course reclaims it immediately...

And as Monty's remnant army flees the field both make peace. Meanwhile I've teched to Gunpowder and hit the Renaissance Era. Also my borders have expanded to the Horses. I could build Curassiers now if only I had Iron...but no one wants to trade that. Stupid AI ! ;)

My realm in 1400 AD.

I've climbed out of the war quite nicely I think. Now I'm on the path to Rifles (Paper route with a possible stop at Liberalism), I already have Guilds and Banking, unlocking my Stock Exchange. With some Muskets and Longbows I will feel safer too. Unfortunately I lost both the Parthenon and the Hanging Gardens by 6 and 8 turns, but you can't have everything. I doubt though that Conquest is possible here - with the annihilation of Asoka Ragnar turns into a monster, owning all of the north...

Turnset 4 - Peter.
Spoiler :

Just wow. That was one of the most exciting gaming experiences I've had in years. Monty DoW'd me in 880AD and it was real seat of the pants stuff fending him off. When the main blow came, I couldn't bear to look at the screen! :)

Well, have a bunch of experienced troops, earned 3 GGs from the war, have rifling and poised to start cleansing the world. This is going to amuse.

Thanks again for arranging all this Mr Oz! :)

Pre flight - ready to rock!

Press enter.

I'm second most cultured. Behind the dogpiled Asoka. Who IBT asks me to cancel deals with Sumeria. No thanks.

820AD - my great artist is born from music. Pop for an insta GA.

880AD - Monty DoWs me. The miserable little goit.

Spoiler :

I slip a cat into my build order. Move some longbows onto a hill near him.

900AD - he has a lot of troops on my border - Catapult > Longbow.

920AD - Longbow > Stables.

940AD - A SoD turns up on my doorstep - experienced troops.

Spoiler :

Stables > Horse Archer. Upgrade my last archer to a longbow. Get a Great Engineer - banked for happier times. My 3 hill longbows are designed to blunt the initial attack - get hill promotions.

960AD - they do terribly. Managing to kill only his 2 catapults. Bah! MM specialists to get gunpowder in 4. Another longbow.

980AD - My wasted GA ends. :) Gilly asks for a DoW on the Indians. Hell, why not. Sacrifice my catapult on the aztec stack and it actually survives. Albeit out in the open - so it's dead now. :)

1000AD - My catapult is alive as the Aztecs stopped to regroup. Horse Archer attacks the stack from over the river - surviving and collateroling the reinforcement Aztec Catapults. Queue up another HA.

1010AD - New HA attacks and dies. Queue another. IBT the azzies shell me down some more.

1020AD - Queue some walls. New HA attacks and retreats.

1030AD - More shelling IBT. Gunpowder is in. Queue a musket. Starve city to get it in 1 turn.

1040AD - My defenses are gone... First musket online. Queue another. Trade Raggy CoL and Priesthood for Currency. My original HA is healed and goes out to fight - dies. With some trepidation I hit enter.

1050AD - The azzies attack - This picture sums the aftermath nicely:

Spoiler :

We killed:
5 catapults.
3 Jaguars
2 Spears
1 Axe
2 Chariots
1 Horse archer

Add the great general to my city as an instructor - I want Level 3 units off the bat and don't have theocracy.

Promote the survivors. Sally forth and kill the 3 remaining Aztecs - A jaguar, chariot and spear. This generates a second great general. In a fit of excitement, I think it's the first great general and accidently add him to my city. Hmmmm. Ah well - it's done now.

Monty still doesn't want to talk - figure I need to burn one of his cities then.

1060AD - There's a 2 turn breather, so blow my GE on the national epic.

1070AD - NE > Musket

1080AD - a small aztec stack moves outside my walls. Costs me a catapult and a chariot, but I kill it. Monty will talk peace, but wants Civil Service. Few more Muskets and I'll blow up a city and see if that shuts him up.

1100AD - running with buls event strikes - pay for the little extra culture - iron 2 turns sooner is good!

Spoiler :

Kill a maurauding catapult. Asoka is a OCC as well - but not doing as well. :)

1150AD - been letting the Oxford Uni finish - completes this turn. Aztecs turn up in spread stacks - kill 5 of them with muskets and a horse archer. Start a treb.

India is dead - this could get 'interesting'! :)

1160AD - kill a maurauding Horse archer. Start one of my own.

1170AD - HA > Treb.

1180AD - Seems gilly has poisoned my water supply. The miserable so and so.

1190AD - destroy another stack - get my 3rd GG - turned into a mega medic horse archer..

1200AD - Monty will now take peace for 60g. Begrudgingly say yes and set about some rebuilding.

1210AD - Great spy born - another settled GP. :)

1230AD - I try to stir up an AI war - but no opportunities. However Raggy has enough on his hands.

1260AD - Globe Theatre.

1290AD - Forge completed.

1320AD - raggy Dows monty. What a champ! :) Trade Gilly Drama and Literature for Theology.

1330AD - Grocer built.

1340AD - Finally - another great prophet - merged.

1370AD - Bank built.

1390AD - Liberalism slingshot is in. Guess what we'll be taking! Promote my first 2 rifles.

Spoiler :

What I discovered: Music(820AD) > Metal Casting (880AD) > Horseback Riding (900AD) > Gunpowder (1030AD) > Currency (1040AD - trade) > Machinery (1080AD) > Engineering (1140AD) > Printing Press (1210AD) > Guilds (1250AD) > Banking (1280AD) > Rep Parts (1340AD) > Liberalism (1390AD) > Rifling (1390AD - sling) > Nationalism (not finished)

Spoiler :
A quick review of the save shows me about to complete my first musket and Gilgamesh brewing for a war.

I've stuck research on Liberalism but change my mind and switch to Feudalism, for Guilds and Banking. Going for Music is also tempting to culture bomb the horses or even settle for the extra culture and coin but I leave of for now.

I alternate military and infrasturcture for the first few turns.

I get bad events.

Followed by good.

My peace deal with Monty expires and he's back to narky.

Music was just 2 turns so get the free Great Artist, I merge him.

The Indians are killed off and I never even met Asoka in this entire game.

I also detour to get the free Great Merchant from Economics and revolt to mercantilism. Free Merchant also merged.

I finally complete Globe Theatre about 1000 years after getting Drama.

I have managed to get to drill IV from barbs, will upgrade to a rifle nicely.

Finally I'm at war with someone. The winner ladies and gentlemen is...

I pound his stack with Hwachas and they suicide against my longbows and muskets. There are no Viking survivors and no Korean casualties.

I get a GG, I attach him to a CR2 warrior I'd been saving, so I can make an uber rifle.

Rifling taken from Liberalism.

I wipe another stack with my spanking new rifles but take peace as war with Ragnar isn't on my agenda. Monty is.

Actually Ragnar I do agree. The end of days has started.

Rifles against longbows is hardly fair.

2 cities are razed by the end of the turns. I will start up another simliar sized stack to swing by Gilgamesh. They can then take Ragnar from either side.

Let the rifles roll....
