Many Leaders Game 5 - One City Challenge

@Conroe:
Spoiler :
Ah, first time I see an AI stealing tech. Did you station a spy in Thebes for counter-espoinage? A good decision to turn around and declare on Monty after he declared on Gilgamesh. Good luck. But meanwhile, what is Ragnar doing?
Spoiler :
Ragnar got a bit behind the pack with his long war with Asoka. Now that Asoka is dead, he is trying to play catchup. I've done some tech deals with him, and so has Monty. I presume he is building infrastructure in his cities, now that he is at peace. I check every couple of turns to make sure he doesn't have his hands full.

@Conroe -
Spoiler :
The next IBT will be interesting. That's one hell of a stack Monty has. If he attacks your fort you should be OK but 6 trebs might cause a bit of collateral. I found in my game the AI couldn't resist the fort (mine is in the same position). If it does get hairy at least he'll talk peace and you can wait until you get infantry and trample him again.
Spoiler :
That's good news about the fort. If his stack bypasses the fort, it will definitely be game over for me. It may be game over anyway, as Monty has still more troops sitting in that city on the iron tile.

I'm hoping to avoid making peace with him. I'd rather not wait the 10 turns with him just recently acquiring PP. My guess is he is teching hard towards Rifling.

@Oz

Spoiler :

Monty's on his way back from Sumer war... I think he will join Ragnar for a one of a hell great war against me... Still, it will be some nice XPs for my infantry stack - always a fine thing before going out to war :)

The confused buddy was scouting around, but I fear he will be a toast soon enough :suicide:

@Oz:

Spoiler :
Impressive play, as always ! Congrats on that win !

I think I'll drop here.

Do you think it's still doable guys?

Spoiler :

I have smashed Sumer, smacked several Ragnar cities and managed to keep him behind. He only gets rifles, while I hop here and there with Infantry.

What upsets me is Monty.
He just got Infantry (stolen me Sci Meth in the process, the b@$tard).
With rifles and cavs, I was able to compete with my infantry & artillery, now that he has infantry, I don't think it's winnable. Especially there is no oil on our horizon :sad:

Attached the save so that you can judge by yourself.

Btw, my wars were on a stop & go mode due to the AP resolutions :mad:

If you ask nicely, I'll post a more detailed report ;)

@Oz

Spoiler :

I do have Marines - I got Industrialism a few turns earlier.
Still, I though Infantry were getting a nice vs Gpowder units bonus.

I think I'll drop here.

Spoiler :
Oz is right...Arties smash everything, if you have enough of them. Bombers can do a good job too, but in BtS airpower is hader to manage and almost useless in OCC, unless you spam forts in the countryside

A question: ATM I don't recall ,but don't you have Globe?... If you have why don't you defy the AP ad nauseam? Defying only gives :mad: ( and only if sucessful ), and that is hardly a issue in a Globe OCC empire ;)

I'm not sure if this'll work, but what if you get a stack of paratroopers and drop them deep in monty territory where big stacks won't be as common as in the border cities? And if Monty brings in Tanks, can't u use Anti-Tank Infantry? Just some ideas, enless i'm missing something...

@r_rolo

Spoiler :

I definitely misplayed my last turnset, and it's not the spirit of the online game to go back and restart from 1700AD... You're perfectly right.
I may go back to the beginning of the current turn though - before my desperate suicide of the inf stack on Aztec infantry guarded city :please:
I will give it a try tomorrow heading huge artillery stack & marines.

@tlo

Spoiler :

Thanks for the advise mate. I think I was heavily pi$$ed off with my recent 95% prob losses Combat3 Infantry vs Lbow... :mad:
I should have stopped a few turns earlier and think a little bit about steps to take. Are there any ressource-less units better then Marines, somewhere in the future ?

@pawelo
Spoiler :
About your question to TLO: Mechs are resourceless units as well ;)

And spit arties.... really, they can make wonders... just see the last turnsets of Fox 9 ( +98% chances of a CR III artie to smash a gren from a ship :eek: )

Spoiler Pawelo :
Yap, Paratroopers(same str as marines), AND Mechanized Infantry (req's robotics though) If you want to pull off a victory you still can, but i think it might be pretty late game.

Of course Ricardo ;) beat me to it.

Spoiler pawelo :
Civlopedia's defenition of paratrooper:

The Paratrooper is a late game Gunpowder unit that is able to Paradrop to any visible tile unoccupied by enemy units within it's range. Watch for enemy aircraft as paratroopers Paradrop can be intercepted.

Think you can get an explorer or some unit there and get the paratroopers to paradrop and take monty's inner cities?

Spoiler :
You can use recon from airships or planes for making tiles visible and you can paradrop from forts. Looks a interesting idea ( drop, raze, build fort,... ) ,but Paras come so late....

@tlo, r_rolo

Spoiler :

Should I continue, I hope the game will be finished before I hit the paras :lol:
Anyway, thanks for what looks like a very interesting idea :goodjob:

My late wars $uck big time - I'm so used to peaceful victories that I have a great pain to go through a solid war :blush:

Spoiler for Pawelo to :
Paratroopers only require Facism, Rifling and Flight. Flight requires Fission and Combustion. Can't be to hard.

Don't Airships and Planes require Oil, which Pawelo doesn't have access to. That's why i suggested Explorer or some troop. How about a Spy?

edit: yah Pawelo you should continue. I'd play to the end. War isn't my faverite thing in the world of civ aswell.

It's starting to be a long debate :lol:

Spoiler :

I can build airships so I don't think this one require oil. I already can research flight and radio, so I'm not that far away :salute:

Shaka--->The Final Countdown
I decided to finish to get this SG off my plate. I said it would be 40 turns till i was done....it was 38
Spoiler :

302--->Ragnar has another monster stack.
Civ4ScreenShotsk20.jpg

I hit his SOD with every arty and unit from both my stacks....not much left.

Civ4ScreenShotsk26.jpg

You see where the ruins are under my workers feet, thats where his last city was. You can see in this screenshot in the upper right where it was.
Civ4ScreenShotsk25.jpg

333--->Internet is done and because Monty is dead, i dont get any techs...arrgghh. Raze Ragnars capitol.

Civ4ScreenShotsk29.jpg

Civ4ScreenShotsk31.jpg

Not counting scouts and workers, I lost 12 units.
Civ4ScreenShotsk30.jpg

I got 19 Great people and 7GG. Id like to see what others got to compare that. I never got the parthenon nor went into pacifism, so im sure im on the low end of getting GP's

I was able to run 19 specialist at the end and still get a Mech in 1 turn.
Civ4ScreenShotsk33.jpg
.

I decide to punish my GG and Great Spy. They arrived too late to do any good so the workers and spies are stoning them to death.

PS...all my rounds can be found on Post #69

Spoiler :
I wanted to put this puppy to bed before starting up MLG6, so I sat for a while to finish it off. I ended up sitting for a lot longer than I wanted to.

- I built Angkor Wat and began working priests
- Grabbed Rifling with Liberalism
- Began to build up an army when this happened:

Civ4ScreenShot0039.jpg

And before that, and for the 7th or 8th time:

Civ4ScreenShot0037.jpg

After whittling down his massive stack of "obsolete" units, I took peace and only began to take the offensive at this opportunity:

Civ4ScreenShot0055.jpg

The entire world against Monty. No better opportunity. :)

Unfortunately, by this time, Monty already had rifles. Using trebs and infantry, I plowed my way through and slowly, but surely, removed Monty from the planet.

Civ4ScreenShot0090.jpg

In an attempt to wrap things up faster, I declared war on both Ragnar and Gilgamesh. Things ran smoothly until I ran into infantry. I hit a brick wall and had to wait until Artillery before I could advance anymore. But at this point, while producing units every single turn with an automatic four promotions, I was just cleaning up.

Unfortunately, the clean up took a really long time, so I didn't get a very impressive end date:

I was happy that I won, and it was fun. Thanks to Ozbenno again for hosting this and time to get on with MLG6!

De Gaulle 1400-1700

Spoiler :

203: a good event
degaulle07.jpg

204-207: After having bled Monty I think it is time to cut Gilgamesh down to size before he gets too advanced, so I move my troops, sign a temporary peace agreement with Monty, and declare war.
209: The war starts well with two cities razed, but unfortunately my cultural border won't expand to the iron tile. Researching steel for cannons seems to have been a waste of time that should have been used to research rifling instead :(
degaulle08.jpg

210: Steel -> Rifling
223: Larsa razed
229: Uruk razed
230: GA born and settled in Paris to help expanding the border to get iron faster.
232: Monty declares war on me, but he seems to be out of troops since the latest bloodbath.
237: Lagash razed
242: Finally I see some Aztec troops, but such a small stack is easily defeated.
249: Zimbir razed
250: My troops are ready to attack the new Sumerian capital

Here is the map of the destroyed Sumerian cities:
degaulle09.jpg

Progress is somewhat slow because I still use trebs, and the cities have huge cultural defenses that take many turns to reduce. I sure wish I had cannons. Once I get the last big Sumerian cities I will move the army to Monty and try to break him once and for all. Luckily Ragnar is still fighting with Asoka, and they are both far behind and should be easy to deal with later.
