The World Turned Upside Down

@fantasmo, I'm sure that your orders will be interesting considering the events of the previous year.

@nukekid, hope he recovers, France will be NPCed now.

To: Turan Ummah
From: Turkey

Any of your forces deployed will be considered an invasion and thrown back through use of arms. Stay out of our country, though we would welcome UN observers.

Update to be begun in 2-3 hours.

IC: Observers dispatched to Turkey, per request.

OOC: I'll tally the UN section, and prepare a mini-update.
Additional information: all nations except turkey and any nations that are introduced this update now have seats on the UN general assembly, as of the upcoming update. could I get a nation total so I can recalculate the votes needed?

ordœures incoming.

EDIT: lost in computer crash, now redone for the most part, and sent off.

I have no time to send orders, just invest everything into the tech I am researching. (Naval based radar I think)

EDITED: Airborne radar. Sorry.

starting update now

Crap. I had to go out all day, more things involving my sister (things I thought were over a long time ago...) so I hope you'll accept my somewhat late orders. If not, such is life.

BIGGEST BOOM-BOOM OF THEM ALL. Johnson Island, United States of America. American physicists detonated a weapon which far exceeded expectations on Johnson Island in the South Pacific Ocean. Demonstrating the firepower of a weapon which could devastate a region of over a thousand square miles in the initial blast, the American military awed even itself. Many liberal papers throughout the world have claimed that these new weapons could end life on earth as we know it.

North/Central American News Report

REPUBLICANS WIN US ELECTIONS. Washington D.C., United States of America. President Brynes lost the 1948 in a surprising landslide which has found the newly reforged Republican Party in complete command of Congress and the Presidency. The only truly disputed election was the primaries which were highly contested between Winston Churchill and Douglas MacArthur. Douglas MacArthur, a general who led his troops to victory against the Bourbons and helped establish the current existing Iberian regimes, won the nomination. With Churchill’s support and his new position as Secretary of State, President-elect MacArthur has vowed to take a tougher line against all of America’s enemies and potential enemies, both in Asia and Europe.

South American News Report

ELECTIONS IN CHILE. Santiago, Chile. Following an embezzlement scandal indicting President Vildera of Chile in the late months of 1948, the Radical Liberal Party won in a landslide. The new President Grove Vallejo has vowed to end some of the more rightist conservative policies and help expand “South American socialism.” In a landmark meeting between President Vallejo and President Duartes of Argentina, the two nations have sealed a permanent nonaggression pact and have vowed to work together to “build a brighter future for South American workers.”

FOOD CRISIS CONTINUES IN VENEZUELA. Caracas, United States of America. Bread riots occurred throughout the former Venezuelan capital of Caracas as food rationing becomes more and more restrictive. However, a significant minority of Venezuelans have begun turning their rage against the Venezuelan Liberation Front which has been tied extensively to the destruction of the food trains through Panama. Reports have also been made that rationing will be lifted upon individuals who turn in members of the VLF, and several notable former officers of the Venezuelan Army have been captured by American military authorities.

European News Report

ZHUKOV PLEDGES “NEW RUSSIA.” Kiev, Ukraine. Following a recent series of Soviet crackdowns on anti-communist parties throughout Russia, several notable generals including the hero of Trotskygrad, General Zhukov, have pledged support to a new organization, termed Novaya Russia. Ukrainian politicians have claimed that in order for Russia to be a progressive state they should once more open up free elections. Even leaders from Mongolia and Transamur have called for free elections in the Soviet Union, supporting the claims of Zhukov.

BATTLE OF TRONDHEIM. Trondheim, Republic of Scandinavia. Following an American attempt to arrest Alexander Oldenburg, leader of the Ledig Norge in Trondheim, the Americans and Norwegians entered into their first open battle. The American force won an easy victory against the local militia in the city, though the forces were nearly overrun until the arrival of fresh troops from Stockholm. Though Alexander remains free, American forces secured the city as the militia retreated into the mountains and countryside. (-1 Militia Division for Ledig Norge)

African/Middle Eastern News Report

ABYSSINIAN ELECTIONS. Addis Abba, Abyssinia. The first Abyssinian elections were held this year, and with astounding support from both the rich and poor, the King threw his lot in with the Conservative Coalition under Prime Minister Josuf Akka and the powerful voting bloc of the Agrarian Political Union has made its voice heard in a major voter turnout. However, the election results were met with riots throughout Somalia, which have been sparked by local Imams, extolling Islamic unity and denouncing the “heathen Christian liberal despotism.”

CRISIS IN TURKEY. Ankara, Turkey. Since the overthrow of the Imams in 1947, Turkey has been hastily preparing for elections by May of 1948. The Sons of Ataturk have won by a significant majority, particularly after absorbing the Turkish Communist Party. Tensions have mounted as Turkey has joined the European Economic Community and the European League. However, it has become apparent that the Sons of Ataturk have quickly made a deal with the Soviet Union. By July 1948, liberal press announced that Soviet forces had established an air base in Turkey. Many reputable government sources across the world have confirmed that the Soviets have deployed a squadron of their feared Bear High Altitude Bombers as well as at least one nuclear weapon to the nation. Islamic leaders have denounced the move as a direct threat at the nations of the Brotherhood.

WAR IN WEST AFRICA. Mexican and Sokoto forces, in a surprising coalition, have launched an invasion of the new nation of New Zion. The governments of both nations have denounced New Zion as an “illegitimate state” and have refused to recognize the country. Jewish military forces have been hard pressed to defend against the massive onslaught and have nearly been pushed into the sea. Neighboring nations have become actively involved with the war, as New Zion earlier entered into the League of African Nations with the CSA and WAU.
Casualty List
New Zion: 2 Infantry Divisions, 1 Jet Fighter Squadron
Mexican Free State: 2 Infantry Divisions, 1 Jet Fighter Squadron, 1 Bomber Squadron

DISSENT IN CHINA. Peking, People’s Republic of China. Students protested at the University of Peking following reports of numerous funds and influence being given to upper members of the Communist Party and Red Army. Hard-line communists within China and the Soviet Union have denounced the move, as over 10% of the Chinese economy falls into the hands of a select few private individuals. Military forces within the Peking area were placed on high alert following the demonstration, which called for maintenance of true socialism. (+5% Dissent for PRC)

OOC: Pro-Commie student demonstrations in China! What delicious irony.

IC: Germany would like to throw in its support for the brave actions of Sokoto and the Mexicans. The greedy Jew has long oppressed, and now they get their comeuppance after the greatest land theft of all: a nation which they stole.

The actions of the Turkish are completely unacceptable. Not only have they become a Soviet satellite, their irresponsibility threatens both Europe and the Middle East.

The Sons of Ataturk signed their own death warrant when they became Communists, and the judgment of Allah will be anything by merciful. We call upon the world to see the Soviet agression, to recognize that they have deployed Nukes within striking distance of Mecca, Rome and Tokyo. The world is now held hostage by these perpetrators of Genocide and War. We warned all of you, but it is too late.

It is now time for action.

We call upon the EEC to eject Turkey, as it is now a communist country that harbors Nuclear Weapons so that it may spread its perverted socialism. We call upon Turkey to eject the Soviets, and we call upon the Soviets to back down.

Or else.

OOC: Great Update

America condemns the Soviet Union for the placement of nuclear weapons in Turkey. Now, no country on the Mediterranean or in the Middle East is safe from the threat of Communist aggression. Apparently Turkey has traded one "oppressor" for another. Congratulations, we're sure Ataturk would be very pleased that your now someone's puppet and by becoming so have endangered your entire region.

To Turkey
From Italy:

You have placed the defense of your nation in the hands of an enemy of all sensible people of the world. We ask why you have made this move when most certainly joining the European League has allowed Turkey to gain part of collective defense. While we support your right to sovereignty and have supported your measures for freedom from puppet control of Baghdad and New Samarkand, you have seemingly given yourselves up to Moscow.

With your actions the entire European League is now at risk for "or else" by the Brotherhood of Islam.

To European League
Until Soviet bombers are removed from Turkish lands Italy will not provide for the defense of Turkey and motions for Turkey to be expelled from the European League until such a time that the Soviet Union no longer has nuclear weapons inside of Turkey's borders.

To Turan:
Do not threaten us. While we disapprove of Turkey's choice, we also disapprove of your continued belligerency towards its now free existence.

Nice update. I think the VLF is done for, really. America is too strong.

To European League

Germany seconds the motion to expel Turkey from the European League, and is rather disappointed that this new nation, which was shown support even in face of great threats, had to so callously turn its back on the Europeans and instead rely on the treacherous Soviets.

OOC @ EQ: well that was an interesting twist. great update though.

From the Consolidated States of Afrika
To Germany

We see no choice but to sever all diplomatic ties with your nation. You encourage nations that are at war with us when we were in a supposed 'commonwealth'. To think we supported you during the civil war, buying large shipments of oil to support you. To all European nations, know that this is the true Germany, who turned their backs on their American allies, and then their African allies. It shall not be long before they turn their backs on you, and when they do, it shall be on your hands if you do not recognize them for who they are. Germany, you have 24 hours to either turn a complete about face and declare war on both Sokoto and Mexican Free State, or face an embargo from CSA, as well as any other nations that may choose to. Your ambassadors will have 25 hours to leave the nation, or be imprisoned, barring certain circumstances.

OOC: when you have secrets you dont want getting out, pissing off the person who knows them isnt a great idea. However, I'll be nice this once.

TO THE WORLD
FROM CSA

We ask for your aid in fighting the two nations who belligerently wish to destroy an independent nation. We implore you to at the very least place an embargo on Sokoto and Mexican Free States. New Zion has every right to exist, and was given its independence without a fight or rebellion. Denounce the Communists and Blacks who think that the Jews are the ones unworthy of a nation. Fight the monarchy and communist dictatorship who are trying to conquer a free democracy.

UN mini Update:
In 1947, one reslution passed the general assembly.
3-45:
Spoiler :
It will be made illegal for any nation to provide funding to a terrorist organization. Those found to be violating this law will face embargo and sanctions by the United Nations.
General Assembly Votes: 24 for and 17 Against, with 1 Abstain
LC members for resolution: Italy, USA, Vietnam, Guangxi, UCS, Eire, WAU, nippon
Vetos: Dar-Al-Islam

the UN chairman is pleased to see this push toward stability, and hopes this situation is resolved quickly and peacefully in turkey.

we are also worried about the lack of IC donations, even though the fund was established last year, and three nations pledged support.

To CSA
From Germany

That Germany's own son would turn and backstab the Fatherland so severely is a truly humbling occurence, and only furthers our belief that the Jews have the world in a stranglehold. Nevertheless, we find ourselves forced to abide by our Commonwealth agreement, for indeed, the superiority of the Germans comes first, and in spite of the Jews being the greater of three evils, nevertheless we must acknowledge the criminalism of the blacks and communists.

So in support of our brethren we withdraw our support of Sokoto and Free Mexico. Howsoever, we cannot see ourselves fighting on the side of the Jews, so to that end, the only support we can offer is to the Consolidated States of Afrika, as per commonwealth agreement.

From CSA
To Germany

We thank you for coming to your senses, and withdraw our ultimatum. You have chosen wisely to relinquish support, even against a hated enemy, to work alongside an ally. You have shown your values to the world, and that you can be trustworthy. It is a pleasure to work alongside the kaiser.

To: whom it may concern
From: Vietnam

On the subject of Turkish cooperation with the Soviets, Vietnam would like to point out that the Bear bombers and their cargoes would likely have both Europe and the Middle East in their fuel ranges even without a base in Turkey. In theory, this move proves no extra threat to the Middle East or Europe. We do protest the move and advise moving the nuclear weapons out of Turkey as security is undoubtedly a bit lax, especially after a coup.

On Venezuela, Vietnam decries the witch-hunt state policy the United States seems to follow. When one's stomach is empty, one's head will be filled with greed. Such incentives will induce certain civilians to start denouncing the innocent for mere food, though to them, it will be survival. This policy perpetuates a kind of cannibalism, denounce your neighbor, innocent or guilty, or starve. As a result, Vietnam, as a neutral party, offers to send food to Venezuelan civilians. Also, per UNLCR 5-45, acknowledging the United States' war against the VLF, Vietnam offers to grant asylum to Venezuelan civilians screened with a US-approved protocol. Of course, the decision remains with the United States government, the question for them being: Do we allow United States civilians to suffer and starve?

On a related note, the civilians displaced by the West African war are also welcome, providing that they have the right approval from their governments etc.

To Vietnam
From Germany

Germany Applauds the Vietnamese on their general neutrality, and furthermore by offering to be an asylum for those citizens whose lives are ruined by the ravages of war. Vietnam shows peacefulness and common sense in a world of terror.
