G-Major 20

Man - this DOES take a long long time. Although I cannot understand how anyone can possibly get 400 Future Techs. You're suggesting that in a 750 turn game that you start getting future techs by turn 350 at the latest. That is insane. I am only learning Biology around that time and each tech still takes around 5 turns to research.

Ummm... When the screen says "1 Turn Left" that's when you go on the rampage and take all the remaining AI cities (except 1, so you don't trip a Conquest victory), right?

Because that's what I just did, and it's telling me I have a Domination win. I've put 37 hours into this game, and... ummm... I'm a little upset.

Man, that sucks. I don't know what to say... :(

I wonder exactly what other people have done. Pholtz made it sound like he sometimes got a Domination and sometimes got a Time, but it depended on the point that he loaded the save from??

What did you do shyuhe?

Does it matter which version we are playing?

Yikes, not even an accidental domination win, that must be terrible :(

I think this gauntlet has caused lots of people grief, I'd wait a while before doing another time gauntlet or do one at quick speed on a smaller map, my failed game took 50 hours total and even then it was denied as a dom win due to crashing twice (which really should be in the FAQ - so I didn't carry on for another 10 hours). So I still haven't got an epic game win (the only time I won on epic speed was a WOTM game).

I played in bts. I went up to the "1 turn left" and then settler spammed. I got a time victory on my last turn. I last loaded the game 100+ turns before the end of the game, although I don't know if that matters. Can you post a screenshot of your game Igloo? I don't know what to say...

That's an interesting thought. I loaded the game this evening with 4 turns left (I didn't have time to finish it off this morning, when I did turns 13-left to 4-left).

Screenshot of the finish, let me know if any other screens would be helpful:

I think it's the short load before the end of the game. Pholtz had mentioned something to that effect - that if you reload towards the end of the game, it registers the domination first instead of the time but it wasn't clear what caused that problem.

Actually, reading back in the thread...

Pholtz said he got Time victory when he loaded up the game by double-clicking the save file. He got Domination or Conquest when he loaded the game using the in-program menu.

It seems such a bizzare thing to affect the game results??

I just don't know what finale to plan for my game?? Capture every large sized city? Settler spam? Nothing?

I just went in and reloaded the game from 4 turns out, ran through it quick but roughly the same as the original, and got a Time victory this time. Two differences that I can see between this one and the original ending.

- I (accidentally) let both remaining civs live with a single city each, in the original only one civ survived the final turn.
- I loaded up the save that was created automatically on exit of the previous session, in the original I loaded up the save that I created 'manually' immediately prior to exiting.

In both games I launched the game and loaded up the save from the menu without playing any other saves first.

I think it may be the latter that caused the difference. Maybe it's some sort of conflict between the HOF mod and the game's VC check algorithm? Perhaps one of the admins should look into this problem if it can be reproduced.

Now that I recall, I played my final session from my crash recovery so I was not playing off of a "manual" save.

Hmm, sorry to see my weird results somewhat confirmed. I think its a bug and you should see if you can reload a previous save and play the last few turns and get a Time Victory. Any staff want to comment?

I thought if you started up the game by double clicking on the save game, the end would be ok, but I didn't even think about the two different kinds of saves and I did get conflicting results.

I still fail to see how it is possible to get 400 Future Techs...........

Well, if I manage to complete this game and get a Time victory (25 turns to go), I'll have about 350, but I see at least three things I did wrong.

First - I ran a totally specialist economy, scientists for the most part building farms only. But I expanded too slowly thinking I wanted to keep my research level high. I don't think it fell below 70%. But you get most of your beakers from scientists, not your commerce changed to beakers, so its better to expand faster even if you need to go to 20% or so because more scientists will mean faster research.

Second - I miscalculated my use of Great People. For Great Scientists, I looked at how many beakers I would get from settled scientist compared to academies by calculating the number of turns to the end of the game. Instead I should have calculated to a point about 300 - 400 turns from the end, because excess beakers you get after you get 1 FT per turn are wasted. A similar problem with other great people, when trying to decide to bulb or settle. Essentially I created too many academies and bulbed too few Great People.

Third. My position wasn't the best. I was on the smaller continent, so when I expanded to the larger one, I did not get the full effect of the Statue of Liberty. I would recognize that problem now and restart the game hoping for a better continent.

What version are you playing? In bts, they restored the feature where razing their capital destroys their SS. I think this applies even if they have launched but have not yet arrived at alpha centauri.

edit: My game is accepted! :woohoo:

So, since I'm playing BtS, I should be able to periodically drop off a stack of gunships next to an AI capital and raze it if they start threatening me?

(I can't kill too much on the other continent, because I've vassalised Izzy and she loves me too much to split, so she'll just settle the other continent and trigger me an early domination win)

why don't you just sabotage the hell out of them?

I assumed you were in beauro most of the game - did you consider cottaging your capital until you were hitting FT's in 1 turn? You could have farmed it over then for the GS points.

EDIT: @azzaman: can you raze a city with a gunship in BTS, or do you need to bring a ground unit as well?

I'm fairly sure I did raze a city with the gunship, but I'm not 100% sure since I know I had various other units running around.
