Using a new camera, Sheppard has taking the first pictures of Earth from orbit. American USAF officials have announced further plans for manned orbital operations in the following years.
NEW ATOMIC THREAT DISCOVERED. Singapore, United Nations. A panel of international scientists and nuclear experts have collaborated following the Islamic test in Arabia and the destruction of the Venezuelan Liberation Front. American soldiers who entered the destruction zone in Venezuela were reported to have come down with mysterious illnesses and disease. Following a multitude of protests from the press, the American government has pledged to provide honorable discharge for all afflicted as well as modern health care and comfortable pensions. Similar findings were made in Arabia, following a rash of similar diseases in Oman and Yemen, many miles south of the test site. Radioactivity is believed to spread a long distance and is indubitably a side effect of these powerful new weapons.

REFORM SPURS CONTROVERSY IN CHILE. Santiago, Chile. Chilean government officials have announced a series of new reforms and developments to help decrease crime and secure the nations borders. To help protect the nations large and vulnerable coastline from smuggling, Chile has announced the creation of a Coast Guard, modeled on the United States own organization of that name. Domestically, over ten thousand prisoners were released from jail this year alone with several thousand more up for review through 1955 and 1956, to help ease the jail overcrowding issue in the nation. This has sparked much controversy as many people do not want to see convicted felons once more on the streets.

FRENCH CONTINUE MAJOR MOBILIZATION. Paris, France. Recent riots have occurred throughout Paris as the French industry and economy remain mobilized for war. In the past two years, almost a quarter million Frenchmen have been recruited into the military. Despite liberal protests, many French have begun to support ideas of reclaiming the French Empire and several conservative factions within the Republic have continued to support the military buildup. Many of these fresh divisions have been deployed to the southern border, increasing tensions with the Iberian nations. Euskadi and Catalonia have protested the French mobilization calling it aggression without purpose or reason.
FIGHTING CONTINUES IN THE BALKANS. Sofia, Bulgaria. Though major offensive operations have reached a standstill, heavy fighting has continued throughout the Balkans. Serbian, Romanian, and Bulgarian forces continue clash throughout Bulgaria, devastating the countryside, leaving thousands of civilians dead. Though a resolution to stall the onslaught has advanced to the Leadership Council in the United Nations, it has so far not managed to achieve enough support to pass, particularly with an American abstention and an Italian half-veto. Greek forces have also begun striking with even more force against Serbian forces in Thrace, forcing a virtual second front upon the armies of Serbia. The Greek revolt has even spread into parts of Italian-occupied Greece, though prepared military police have arrested many Greek agitators in the region.

With Islam in disrepute throughout the nation and the rise of anti-fundamentalism, the Socialists have achieved substantial winnings throughout the nation. The new government has pledged to create closer ties with Soviet Union and the Socialist bloc.
