EXPANSION OF SPACE RACE. Singapore, United Nations. The United Nations Chairman has congratulated the Asian Alliance and the Brotherhood of Islamic Nations for their efforts into space exploration. Dar-al-Islam launched their first man into space on June 1, 1958, followed by Nippon’s similar launch in September. This has garnered much controversy within Asia as Nippon’s launch was only possible with the technological aid gained from Dar-al-Islam in exchange for several aspects of Nipponese military technology. More information on the unrest in Asia below. Meanwhile, the League of African Nations have launched their first series of satellites from South Africa as has the Islamic nation of Turan Ummah.

AFRO-ASIAN ALLIANCE COLLAPSES. Tokyo, Nippon. Both the nations of Abyssinia and South Africa have announced their withdrawal from the Afro-Asian Alliance. Both nations cited dissatisfaction with the handling of the crisis in Somalia and Nippon’s foreign policies. Meanwhile, the Indochinese members of the newly established Asian Alliance have grown increasingly irritated by Nippon’s unilateral actions without consultation of the alliance. King Rama of Siam has stated “Nippon’s national policy has no consideration for the improvement of Asian democracy and security.”

MUSSOLINI INCAPACITATED. Rome, Italy. The Italian nation mourned when its long time leader, Benito Mussolini, suffered a massive stroke and fell into a coma. Doctors believe that the Italian leader will not emerge from the coma and will likely die within a year. Mussolini, a leader who has led his nation through two world wars and has recaptured the glory of the Roman Empire, has not yet officially appointed an heir and the Fascist Party hopes to find a new ruler before Il Duce dies. Several rallies have called for a republic to be established, while others have called for the return of the monarchy or even the establishment of a communist nation.

UN WITHDRAWS FROM BALKANS. Thrace, Bulgaria. United Nations forces have announced the successful conclusion of international military involvement in the Balkans. A status quo ante bellum peace has been established and order has been restored. Greek unrest has declined to an all time low since the end of the Third World War and trade has been renewed between Serbia and Bulgaria. The United Nations Chairman has declared success in involvement in the region.

ASA FORCES OVERWHELM IRISH REBELS. Dublin, Eire. Responding to President Kennedy’s call for aid, the forces of the United States and Scandinavia have deployed overwhelming numbers to assist Irish governmental forces in restoring order. Using advanced tactics and massive coordinated firepower, the Irish Army of the Republic virtually melted away in front of the Atlantic Security Agreement’s military might. Many of the right-wing leaders have escaped overseas, and several of the right-wingers are believed to have taken refuge in Irish Cherbourg.

JUAN CARLOS DECLARES ABSOLUTE RULE. Burgos, Castile. Following the tragedy of the Iberian War, King Juan Carlos has declared martial law and disbanded Parliament in order to restore order. Juan Carlos has mobilized the reserves and has vowed to prevent the rise of “revolutionary radicals.” King Carlos has promised no threat to his neighbors or to the stability of the European League. The newly elected Conservative Basque government has warned Castile against “Conquistadorian Trickery.”

REFUGEES ARRIVE IN FRANCE. Paris, France. Over a million Somali Islamic refugees have arrived from Abyssinia into France due to assistance from the United Nations and an agreement to house the said refugees. These homeless former denizens of Abyssinia have been given jobs for low wages in emerging French industries, particularly military establishments. This boost of cheap labor has greatly increased French industrial potential as new factories have been built to help employ France’s newest citizens. (+2 Private Enterprise for France)

NEW KING CROWNED IN SCANDINAVIA. Stockholm, Scandinavia. The government of Scandinavia is proud to have at last restored a king to the throne following the disaster at Oslo prior to the Norwegian rebellion. LITHUANIAN CIVIL WAR. Vilinus, Lithuania. The Fascist government of Lithuania has inflicted a major defeat upon the Republican rebels north of Vilinus. Outnumbered and poorly trained, the Lithuanians have been forced back to the Soviet border. FIGHTING CONTINUES IN WEST AFRICA. Sokoto, Sokoto. Mexican forces have made a successful push against the Sokotan capital as an armored spearhead shattered the vanguard forces of the Sokotan Army. Using air cavalry, the Mexicans still have been bogged down by bad roads and partisan activity. Violence has been reported within most Sokotan cities as the Mexican underclass rises against the rulers and reports of tanks quelling the riots have yet to be confirmed.
Casualty List
Mexican Free State: 2 Infantry Divisions
Sokoto: 2 Infantry Divisions

SOMALIA GAINS INDEPENDENCE. Mogadishu, Somalia. Following a behind the scenes agreement and alliance pressure, Abyssinia has acceded the independence of the Islamic state of Somalia. Abyssinian forces quickly moved to destroy or evacuate anything of value from regions being turned over to the Somalis. They were highly successfully, and the influx of returning citizens has helped stabilized Sudan and Abyssinia proper. Both nations have managed to retain and rebuild their standing industry to a limited degree. Despite that success, Somalia faces famine and strife caused by the evacuating Abyssinian forces, and various militia leaders have begun jockeying for position within the new government.

RIOTS AND PROTESTS ROCK ASIAN ALLIANCE. Saigon, Vietnam. In a multitude of cities in Nippon, Guangxi, Vietnam, and Siam people have protested against a recently published trade of technology and the Nipponese accord over Somalia with the Brotherhood of Islamic Nations. Acting without knowledge of the Kokkai or the alliance as a whole, the Nipponese government traded several elements of Asian military technology to the government of Dar-al-Islam in exchange for a boost which allowed for the September space launch. Protestors were allowed to throw rocks at the Nipponese embassy in Guangzhou, while bearing signs claiming the Nipponese betrayed the over 20,000 Chinese casualties from fighting in Somalia. The King of Siam has denounced the Nipponese agreement with Dar-al-Islam as “treason towards the cause of free-thinking people everywhere.” In Vietnam, several anti-Islamic riots broke out as rioters attacked several ghettos of the newly arrived refugees from Somalia. The Vietnamese Congress has demanded an apology from Nippon for the lost lives in Somalia.

UMMAH TURKS AND CHINESE PARTITION MONGOLIA. Ulaan Baatar, PRC Mongolian Occupation Zone. Despite spirited resistance, the overwhelming forces of the People’s Republic of China and the Turan Ummah have conquered and partitioned the nation of Mongolia. The basis for the occupation was insubstantial claims of Mongolian involvement in the 1957 assassination of the King of Turan Ummah. The Mongolian government’s last proclamation vowed to continue the fight from “the hills and mountains of the Khan.”

To: Italy
From: Poland

Poland is saddened to hear the news regarding Benito Mussolini we hope that he is somehow able to get better and that Italy is not disrupted by this most unfortunate event.

Poland will let Italy, France and other EL members decide the fate of Catalonia.

sure you can

Good update, EQ.

To Italy

We mourn the death of Mussolinni ever so dearly and offer the Italians our condolences.

OOC: So apparently my keeping my technology trade secret didn't work somehow....

To: Our Allies
From: Nippon
CC: The World

Nippon is of course sorry over the losses you suffered and riots in your cities. However we all must remember how many lives were saved by avoidance of a potentially nuclear conflict. Nippon will not apologize for being a voice of reason and peace in these trying times.

We also continue to deny that our actions were unilateral. The agreement for peace and trade were completely tied to Resolution 2-58, and none of the other members of our alliance made any attempt to amend this resolution, none of them made any suggestions on what to do, and none of them attempted any negotiating with Dar-al-Islam. We considered this acceptance of the resolution in it's current state and acceptance for the peace agreement.

As for the South Africans, we are troubled to see them leave our alliance, but they left much before our peace talks with Dar-al-Islam even began.

OOC: The Resolution was fatally flawed in its core.

OOC: Still, no better resolution that had a possibility of peace was submitted

The Grand Council of Fascism has been the forefront of political battles ever since the lapse of Mussolini into a coma. The Grand Council was made up of 14 individuals, not counting the Prime Minister, Mussolini: The President of the Senate and the President of Chamber of Fasci and Corporations; the Ministers of Justice, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Forestry, Education, Corporations, and the Minister of Popular Culture; the Presidents of the Royal Academy of Italy, of the special court of state emergency and defence, of the Corporation of Industrialists, and of the Agriculture worker, Industrial worker and Farmers; The Chief of Staff; and The Secretary of the National Fascist Party. These 14 individuals each held their own political power and sway and each held their own beliefs. It was a body specifically crafted to allow Mussolini a way to control every facet of The State, but ironically now it was time for them to decide a new leader. It was a process that needed time, a lot of time.

It was a game about personality as much as it was about politics. For example some of the members didn't wish to become the Prime Minister, but these handful were the spark to the future choices. They rallied behind the individuals who would be the main contenders after even more in-fighting. Eventually, as with all processes such as these, camps began to form. By early January 1959 four individuals were the top candidates to be the next Prime Minister.

The first is Secretary of the National Fascist Party Alessandro Pavolini. Born in 1902 to a scholar in Florence, he was an original participant of the March on Rome, the grand Fascist procession made after their electoral victory in 1922 after the start of World War 2, as the head of a squad of Blackshirts. After the war ended in 1927 he spread his time between finishing earning a degree in law, leading the Fascist party in Florence, and acting as editor in a Fascist magazine. His brilliance in his ability to multi-task and manage allowed him to work up the ranks, becoming Minister of Popular Culture [propaganda] in 1939 during the midst of World War Three. Pavolini was also one of the people to suggest and create the Black Brigades, the military militias now present across the Italian Empire. In 1951 Pavolini was finally replaced as Minister of Popular Culture to become Secretary of the National Fascist Party. Since then Pavolini has worked hard in ensuring Fascist dominance of the political scene across the empire, though recent demonstrations have shown he hasn’t been the most effective. Pavolini believes he can maintain the status quo and ensure the dominance of Fascism in Italian Empire, a big proponent of force of arms and shows of strength.

The second is Minister of Popular Culture Fernando Mezzasoma. Born in 1907 to a middle class family in Perugia (in central Italy), Mezzasoma was a large fan of Mussolini as he rose to power. He entered service in the Second World War, but his aptitude scores placed him in line for more bureaucratic military jobs. After the war he used these skills to study accounting, but he disliked the practice. He became secretary to lawyer Amedeo Fani in 1929, the undersecretary of then Foreign Minister Dino Grandi. As a result Mezzasoma became firmly entrenched in the state bureaucracy. In 1932 Mezzasoma became the head of his local Perugia branch Fascist Party. He too began writing for magazines and papers, going specifically after students and the youth. He became deputy-secretary of the GUF (Fascist student organization) in 1935 and turned down an offer to be included as a leadership position in the Fascist Party in 1937 to join World War Three. After serving in the 7th Artillery Division for 5 years, Mezzasoma became director of the Italian press in 1942. He served the role for the next 9 years until 1951 when he replaced Pavolini as Minister of Popular Culture. His more youth-oriented approach has won over large portion of the newer generations, ensuring future survival of the Fascist doctrine. Mezzasoma believes he can use Fascism as the unifying force in the Italian Empire, long held together by economics and military, by ensuring the future generations believe fully in the tenants of The State and a unified political and national pride be upheld within the minds of every citizen. Unlike Pavolini he does not believe Fascism is necessarily something that can be forced upon by strength, but must be intellectually engaging and ‘proven’ to be the highest order of government possible.

The third contender is Minister of Finance Domenico Pellegrini Giampietro. Born in 1899 in Caserta (southernish Italy). He volunteered for the military between 1919 and 1921, rising to the rank of lieutenant and being involved in the operation to secure the Adriatic Coast after the Austria-Hungary collapsed. He was on the original Fascist members, and also one of the original members elected into office in 1922. Deciding to aid his nation, Giampietro once again joined the military in 1924. Rising to captain, and being twice decorated, Giampietro returned to his political appointment after the war. In 1929 he finished receiving a degree in Law, and decided to become a lawyer. For the next 8 years he worked as a lawyer, mostly for corporations and credit unions. However, he also actively and furiously worked to bring Fascism into mainstream Academia, writing various academic pieces on the subject and regularly lecturing in Naples University. In 1937 at the outbreak of World War Three, Giampietro returned to politics becoming a member of the Chamber of Fasci and Corporations (lower house of government). His knack for finance that he picked up over his 8 years as a corporate lawyer scored him numerous positions regarding the subject, and in 1943 he would be made deputy-secretary in the Ministry of Finance. Giampietro was then one of the first 2 Italian members of the European Commission. He served that role for the next 4 years before returning back to serve as Minister of Finance in 1948. He would then work with Pavolini in creating the Black Brigades. Giampietro has served as Finance minister the past 11 years and has intricate knowledge of finance and economics. As such he feels that as Prime Minister he could execute economic policy superior to any other choice. He also has had experience on the European Commission and is greatly partial to the EEC and EL, believing Italy can not advance alone. And while he was the one who brought Fascism to the light of academia, he is not the largest pusher of the ideology of the 4 candidates and focuses more on the realistic goals of supply and demand and how Fascist corporatism aids it best, rather than some political ideology.

The fourth and final contender is resident of Chamber of Fasci and Corporations Dino Grandi, Conte di Mordano. Born in 1895 in Mordano (north/central, near Bologna). Grandi joined the army at age 18, in 1913. At this time Italy was engaged in The Communist War, (I’m not sure if this or The Great War is considered ww1) with forces engaged against communists in Iberia. He was sent to fight in the Pyrannes Front, a trench style war in the mountains. This is where he would first meet Benito Mussolini, though at the time he didn’t know what it would mean. After his service ended in 1915, he turned to get a degree in law. After graduating from the University of Bologna in 1919 Grandi originally began work as a lawyer. He once again met Mussolini and was attracted to Fascism. He joined the Blackshirts in 1921 and was one of the original members to be elected in 1922. Grandi quickly worked his way up government, no small part due to his long-time connections to Mussolini, but also due to his incredible abilities. In 1923 he was made Deputy Secretary of Interior, then switched gears and became Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1929. In 1932 he was becoming a little too vocal of Mussolini and was sent to become ambassador to the UCS from ’32 until 1939. When he returned in ’39 Grandi was made Minister of Justice. He worked closely with the MVSN (blackshirts) and OVRA (secret police). During this time he also approached King Emmanuel III and successfully was able to get the title of Count, becoming an aristocrat. Perhaps fearing Grandi’s rising power, Mussolini sent him to the Greek front in 1941, where he would fight for the next 3 years. In 1944 Grandi returned, this time with no ministry position. He was however able to secure a spot in the Chamber of Fasci and Corporations. Using his connection, and his now adept diplomatic skills, Grandi rose in the ranks of the Chamber. In 1947 he received the position President of Chamber of Fasci and Corporations, securing him, once again, a place on the Grand Council of Fascists. Desiring not to stir Mussolini’s anxiety’s again Grandi has remained a less public figure since 1944. His skills and personal abilities though have not dimmed and he has remained a powerful behind-the-scenes figure. Grandi now views it is his time to finally rise to prominence now that Mussolini is out of the way. Ironically Grandi is the most Mussolini-like contender when it comes to policies and ideology, the only thing he’s lacking is the former leader’s intense charisma. Where Grandi can charm and individual, or small group, he has never shown himself capable of motivating a mass of people.

Who will be the next Prime Minister, well that’s something we’ll find out next episode in the second season of Il Duce.

Great update EQ. Only one problem with the stats. I only gained 1 jet squadron for my 1 IC. I should have gained 2 and should be at 19 squads.

@luckymoose, jets are normally 2 IC a pop, with Modern Military Production they are 1 IC each. You spent 1 IC.

Although we too support the construction of a new Catalonian nation sympathetic with the European League, we will continue to occupy parts of Catalonia to act as a buffer to prevent another attack.

As a buffer against what? Attack against Castile, or Euskadi? Both nations are non-belligerent. We can understand protecting against Catalonian attack, but a new government shouldn't have this problem.
