Can somebody provide me with (or point me to) a list of technologies broken into eras for BtS? It helps with random event quests to know when a tech research will void a quest.

Thanks!

The info Pop-up showing when you mouse-over a tech to research will say "Advances to XYZ-Era" if that is the case...

Otherwise...
Spoiler :
Ignore the number, as this is from a spreadsheet i used to re-price the techs for a mod. And just the basic cost, with gets modified in game anyway.
The eras are correct as per unmoded BTS however.

Thanks, Refar! You're a genius! : ) Just what I was looking for, your spreadsheet list there, now cut and paste into my RoboForm CivIV_BTS reference SafeNote, 'it's beautiful man, it's beautiful!' lol - name that classic movie from which that line is taken - hint: it was set and filmed at a historic military school in South East Pennsylvania

Following on from this question - what is the effect of entering a new era?

I think I read somewhere that it effects the speed of something: great person production, teching earlier era techs?

It helps with random event quests to know when a tech research will void a quest.

i like random events, despite others' complaints about them being game breaking, although i would concede that turning them off for a succession game should be mandatory.

@ BigTime: as to your second point, i would have to agree: the player doesn't receive any bonuses for advancing eras.

City and improvement aesthetics change as you go up eras, but that's doesn't effect game play. Also most of the random events are era-specific, as well as many of the quests end once you advanced to a certain era.

Isn't war weariness a function of the era? I.e., moving up from no WW in the Ancient, to potentially crushing WW in Future? Or is that a game date thing?

Otherwise, no, not really much of an effect, except that you get to pause and reflect upon the coolest palindrome ever: Are we not drawn onward, we few, drawn onward to New Era?

The music changes too...

John Addams (shudder) (shudder) (shudder)...

I believe a new era drops your WFYABTA ("We Fear You are Becoming Too Advanced") count by 1. So, non-friendly AIs will trade another tech to you.

Nope. Nothing but the knowledge that you are higher up the tech tree.
Wrong.

There definitely are effects. I am unsure about the random events and such, but the era matters for maintenance and inflation, techs of earlier era's becoming cheaper, and I believe it also matters for things like war weariness -> in more modern era's there are greater happiness penalties for warring.

I am unsure about the exact mechanics behind all this but this is how I understand it. Whatever may be of this and wether it is true or not, you can very well beat deity without troubling yourself with details like this.

Also, recent versions of BUG/BAT/BUFFY color-code the techs in the tree by era.

I think the war weariness is a factor of population and number of units being lost. So while it scales up in ages, it's not because of the ages themselves.

There's a bunch of contradictory answers here, a lot of which seem to be from people who just thought they knew the answer. I'd really like to know the truth on this. Can someone who has the specs confirmed please post on this? Please cover the waterfront. How does going up an era affect diplomacy, tech trading, the advantage to AI (for you going up, or for them going up?), war weariness, maintenance, inflation, etc. Also, I believe it's possible to go up by more than one era at once (Theology, I seem to remember, can do this?), so is that effect different? Thanks in advance.

That's a pretty broad request for such a relatively obscure aspect of the game. Nevertheless, here are some things the era affects.

Which buildings you get for free in advanced start games.

The AI (not the human player(s)) bonuses for the following:

How much it costs to train a unit, build a building or a project.
The unit support and supply (outside of your borders) costs you pay.
The inflation rate.
The war weariness experienced.
How much food is required to grow to the next population in a city
How much it costs to upgrade units

These only kick in for levels of Prince and above and are on top of other bonuses/handicaps for the AI. Things get cheaper as the era advances. So it pays to get to the next era as fast as possible for the AI.
