JNES Civilizations
Update Two
1400 B.C.E.
In Kurugea, a council vote has approved a declaration of war against the people of Gotia in response to a broken marriage and stolen dowry. The Kurugean army, including a detachment of bear riders, invaded along the southern most coast, encountering weak resistance. That is only because at the same time, a Gotian army, first conquering the neighboring German tribes and then reaching the Kurugean border, has invaded Kurugean land in the north. Both armies are within reach of each others capitals, though the Gotian army seems to have dissipated, many warriors deserting their king to return home and protect their families from the Kurugean hordes.
Meanwhile another marriage between Raag the Great of Danmark and Hilde of Kurugean has cemented an alliance between the two kingdoms. Already Danmark is readying its army and positioning its borders to launch an attack in support of their allies. Meanwhile Danish boats make their way to the European mainland, the flatter lands attracting hundreds of settlers, swelling the colony and even establishing a city.
Further north another kingdom has risen to power among the fjords of the jagged coastline of Scandinavia. Nordia is deeply rooted in a seafaring tradition, its boats some of the largest and fastest in Europe. Limited agricultural prospects have prompted great overseas explorations, eventually making contact with the three southern countries.
The kingdom of Taverix has taken on a hobby of plundering nearby tribes, bringing in wealth for its own citizens but creating an ever more difficult endeavor to conquer tribes who are both angry and more prepared for an oncoming invasion. Saxon tribes have taken their toll on expanding Taverix armies, but huge swaths of land are still added to the chiefdom, as well as the founding of a new city in the north.
In Halash, the conquered Silesian population is devastated. Those that are not forced into the army are taken from their land and sold as slaves across the empire. Though these horrific actions have almost annihilated the Silesian tribe, the Halashi economy has benefited greatly with cheap, often times free, labor. Also a large network of roads connecting the empire has facilitated the dispersion of the people and led to a wave of Halashi migration to the new open Silesian lands.
Halashi expansion is also worth noting, its warriors performing very well against the barbaric Saxons, though they were often times outnumbered. Saxon resistance, though, is growing stronger and stronger as tribes fleeing the expanding kingdoms are being pushed into a smaller area. Several great rulers have already risen in many of the tribes, uniting some and preparing to offer stiff resistance, especially to the Halashi.
Like the Halashi, the Canfre have also seen the benefits to well built road system, constructing numerous dirt and sometimes stone paths that connect most major village in the kingdom has helped to unify the deeply divided monarchy. In an attempt to regain the dissident tribes, the Canfre army has attacked the separate rebellions. But when one is conquered, the people flee and join up with the southern ones, and together the Etruscans build a city, fortified with water and earth walls. They are in fact one step away from forming a centralized community. The Apuli, in other news, attempt to expand along the Adriatic coast, encountering a Canfre army. A small skirmish takes place, with no clear victor, and the land is easily split between the two armies.
Meanwhile the Venetian Confederacy takes to the sea, which they promptly name the Rich Sea. Hundreds of commerce galleys have adapted to traveling in these mostly-calm waters, establishing trading points along the eastern coast. The Mycenaean nomads who live here are happy to trade, accepting exquisite clothes and jewelry in return for gold and hides. The Venetians also expand over the Venetian plains to the north, uniting many of their people under the confederacy but also displacing hundreds of Illyrians who now scrounge on the border and prepare to take back what is theirs. The Venetian army is not prepared for an all-out barbarian assault.
As the people of Pylos, along with over half the army, embark on conquering the Greeks to the east, the Spartans see their chance and strike. Fielding an army almost double that left behind to defend the city of Pylos, the citizens and guards take positions inside the city. The Spartans proceed to conquer the rest of the countryside, trapping the Pylosians on the peninsula, and holding back the Pylosian counterattack. As of yet, the Pretsnez have not responded, instead they concentrate on conquering the Mycenaeans to their north, forming for themselves a strong empire (this was a freebie, propagandist).
Cueta is laying the foundations for what looks like to be a very successful nation. Raods are built here as well, but also slave labor is used to build tools for farmers, free of charge, and boats to explore the sea. While the Cuetans have set out further than the Iberians or Numidians, they have yet to reach any other major civilization. Meanwhile a colony is established on the other side of the straight, with Iberians blessings that they will help pacify the Celts. During this time the Iberians have been stranded within their borders as hordes of Celtic barbarians attack at their borders. The Numidians follow the Cuetan example and expand along the coast of Africa.
By using religion as a unifying force, the Supusi have taken better control of their nation. A religion with a set name for each god is enforced in each town, better unifying the Supusi culture. And, following their northern brethren and what seems to be a theme in Africa, the Supusi have also taken to the sea, establishing a trade post near the border with Cueta and conquering some islands along the way. But, because this colony is so far from the Supusi homeland, it is likely to be overrun by Fez or simply abandoned.
Meanwhile further south but not quite to the steamy jungles, a new nation, the Golohm, rise along the banks of the muddy Niger. The army is fierce, since resources are scarce in this area of the world, and every bit of them counts. The Lowani javelin-throwers are among the most feared people on the Niger. A rival civilization, the Ashanti, also rise in the south, cutting the Golohm off from the ocean.
Expansion in the Congo is tantalizingly slow due to the density of the jungle and the fierceness of the tribes. The nations do expand though, mostly along the life-bringing river. Kalambayi also continues to clear more and more land around their cities for the planting of farms, which creates more wealth and more of a reason to reproduce.
As more and more Zulu migrants arrive in their new land, the population of the Zulu Empire soars to be the worlds most populated empire. Good harvests and successful hunts easily feed these numbers, reaching into the tens of thousands. With no real enemy, the Zulu expand across the Rift Valley, creating an empire that is fit for the history books.
Patwaris expands among the plains of the subcontinent. Large groves of trees are cut down to add to the villages wooden structures and even aid in the building of weapons. The wheel, discovered for the first time here during this century, greatly aids in the expansion effort of the Patwaris.
The Phybio-Matchem alliance soon becomes distraught over an Ainu invasion that brings the occupation of Matchem and the subsequent liberation by Phybio. In debt and due to a whole other list of reasons, the Matchem slowly lose their power in the alliance until full legislative power is shifted to Phybio. With the more or less stability now achieved, Phybio set out to establish colonies, which quickly rebelled and were conquered by Nipponese natives. Meanwhile to the north the Ainu organize themselves into a state, threatening the northern border of the former-alliance, and once again looms like a shadow over Matchem. Akadeos, as the region is called by the Phybions and Matchemites, looks like it is on the brink of war.
Now we skip over the entirety of the Pacific and reach the evergreen cliffs of the Chinook and Teronlia. Here it is a common sight to see the amazing canoe hunt of whales off the coast, where elaborate tactics are used to, over a period of weeks, ensnare a whale that feeds an entire village for weeks. On land, the Teronlians construct through the wet forests a system of roads to connect their new holdings along the river. It is out here that the Chinook and Teronlia come across the large tribal-kingdom of Asotin. With the infrastructure already in place for trade, the Teronlia begin to trade to the Asotin whale blubber and fish, and in return receive precious stones and minerals to help in boat making.
In the forested regions of the east coast, the Wampanoag expand the sea coast, and by order of the council of chiefs, a new village is established here in order to conduct trade with the Mohegans and others who wish to venture here. Fishing has also started to become very important because of this village, putting much more authority into the hands of this individual chief. Lobster hunting has also become an industry for the Wampanoag, also adding something in which to trade.
Talomata further refines its written language, turning plain pictures into differentiated marks and circles, creating the Americas first complete writing system. This has helped organization efforts within the nation incredibly, both fueling efficiency in grain storage and taxation, as well as trade and even ship-building. A subsequent population boom has led to rapid expansion into the south where readily available farmland attracts hundreds of Talomatan farmers. Local tribes are ran out of the land, most escaping to either Attalusca (renamed from Seminole) or to the unclaimed western coast. Meanwhile, with a large supply of farmers and settlers, the Talomatans sail northwards, establishing colonies directly managed by the chief council in the homeland, who easily take and defend land from the stone-age natives.
Also to fuel the growing economy, Talomata begins to send its sailing ships south to raid and pillage the sea-side villages of the Attalusca. Unable to match the Talomatan galleys with speed or distance, the Attaluscans are almost incapable of defending themselves.
Meanwhile the warriors of Talomat are stretched thin, inviting hostile nomads from the north to pillage the northern border.
Just south, cooperation between the Curantis and the Attaluscans has spelt doom for the other natives of the island. Combined forces are able to expand their respected dominions. Though Curantis is experiencing a climb in growth, hostile Choctaw boats continue to hassle the northern coasts.
Choctaw continues its slow climb back to superpower. With little expansion, the Choctaw instead concentrate on rebuilding its infrastructure including villages along the Mississippi and the Caribbean coast. A language based almost completely off of the Talomatan language has also been adapted for use here, helping the Choctaw keep up with the rising power of Talomata.
Notes from the Mod:
If it looks like your army didnt grow despite you ordering it, make sure you didnt fight during the update, because if you did it is likely you lost some troops there. Next update I will include how many troops each nation loses in each encounter.
Also I added a population stat. I will update the front page for a rule for that in a few minutes.
