How often (if at all) do you get all-out nuclear war between the AI? Or at least pre-emptive strikes? I'm yet to come across this, shall I buy Defcon instead? :D

never have really dealt with AI building nuclear weapons. Once had Kublai Khan build 3 tacticals, launched one. Pissed me off cause it started global warming

The AI usually is not advanced as me, and I end up droping the bomb on them. I am not scared to use nukes.

Sorry to be the party breaker , but as a fan of space wins, I sometimes get some AI taht are determined to get a Dom win... those AI will do the manhattan, will defy the UN ban vote if necessary, and will put a nice fireworks in the sky in the last wars. I've seen 20 ICBM and tactical exchanged in one IBT in inter AI wars in emperor....

the AI doesn't usally get that advanced in my games. In my last game though Louis pissed off cathy so much that she droped a tactical nuke on paris.

try turning off diplomatic victory and playing on monarch + and you will see some very fun nuclear exchanges. Once I exchanged at least 80 ICBMs and Tactical Strikes with Hyuna Capac. When the war was over I had won a Domination Victory but the world was reduced to radioactive ash and the global warming had left the world a barren desert.

Oh, I've had it. As long as the UN hasn't banned it <and it doesn't always> and you're playing at a level where you aren't blowing away the AI early it can happen. I have usually had it when there are many militaristic civs.

Once had a game where Germany and I had the classic nuke show down, German 1st strike then MAD, recovery keep plugging for space race victory -- 2nd nuke war but this time SDI means many less hits. I got off that planet PDQ

Yeah nuclear wars are fun, but the AI tends to not do as well as me because

-They don't build many ICBMs and generally target them at cities only as opposed to troop concentrations
-They build tactical nukes but their targeting can be rather poor, by launching far too many nukes at the same target, using excessive numbers all at once
-They use them all up right away most of the time and that can leave them vulnerable to counter attack

But its still pretty fun, I even removed global warming from the game to make it much better

I had a hilarious game recently with nukes.

I was Frederick going for a Space Race victory, fractal, normal sized map at Noble difficulty and Normal Speed..

I had a relatively small empire but I had around 8 good cities and 4 or so more filler cities. Anyway my research rate was really high, but I was running really low on production. But that's besides the point.

I'm on a continent with Washington and Shaka. We're all Christian brothers and all friendly with each other, however Washington had more land then Shaka and me combined.

I get Astronomy and find the other continent...Muslim Montezuma. Well, there was also Churchhill and Rameses, but Churchill only had London left and Rameses only had three lousy cities I forgot the name of left. Both were Montezyma's vassals. Montezuma has a huge empire, larger then our whole continent.

Gandhi is also on a small tundra-ish continent with only THREE cities, yet he has the Hindu, Buddhist, Judaism, Confucian and Taoism Holy Cities some how...probably because of the 3 gold, 3 furs and 2 silver on the continent, and all the fish...it's really silly that it had that many resources, but then again it was a pretty tiny continent, cramped with 3 cities and MAYBE space for one more.

Tensions are high but no wars. I get to the tech that discovers Uranium...it's EVERYWHERE. Eight sources in the American Empire, two sources in the German empire, three sources in the Zulu Empire, one source in the Indian empire, and about seven sources in Montezuma's land and one source in both England and Egyptian lands!

I hope for the best...but then "Montezuma has completed Manhattan project!"...as head of the U.N. I propose No Nukes but it is defied by Churchill for some bizarre reason.

I keep building my spaceship and worrying, and when I'm about 70% done it finally happens (just needed the five casings, the thing that comes with Ecology and one more engine). "Montezuma DoW's on You!!!" and he also DoW'd on Washington and Shaka, as we all had Defensive Pacts with each other.

What happens next? Well...let's just say it wasn't pretty. A massive nuclear war takes place between me and Washington and Shaka, vs. Montezuma and Churchill. (I had set one city up for solely producing ICBM's and had about 20)

It isn't pretty. Something like 15 nukes are launched within 5 turns of the DoW, 2 of which mine, and 4 of which are Montezuma's which all land in the coastal city of Cologne, utterly destroying it pretty much with nukes and then invading and razing it with ONE UNIT since I had no units left in the city. (I was really upset though...Cologne was one of my major production cities...it had Moai and tons of plains and plains hills, as well as Iron in the BFC)

I lose progress on my space race because I have to quickly build units because of my tiny military, leaving only two very production weak cities to build parts. (Hamburg and Dortmund... both heavy science cities)

The war goes on with a nuclear back and forth, and after about 30 turns of the war around 60 nukes had been launched!

At this point all of the militaries have been devastated and cities are being taken left and right. I also realized here that Churchill's London, had not been hit by one nuke or invasion force and was a super city, inland surrounded by tons of heavily protected Montezuma land, and had two cows and one rice in the BFC, as well as copper and tons of production!

I quickly send my invasion force into Montezuma's land and get them pretty close to the English empire's borders but not that close, and then I used half of my 30 nuke collection on the same turn, utterly destroying London and everything around it. I then moved in my invasion force, taking and razing London, along with it the Spiral Minaret, The Parthenon and University of Sankore.

The entire world was turning into desert and at a ridiculous pace. Hamburg is pretty much the only city making anything at this point as I have relocated the Moai Statues there and it has tons of seafood to run Engineers with. Berlin was nuke bombarded and then razed, along with it the Pyramids, Great Library and Angkor Wat.
It was quite a loss considering how much production it had and how many settled scientists were in it...but only four casings left.

Dortmund is also doing okay but it's a wealth city now, helping keeping the economy afloat with cottages and Merchants. Aside from these two, Munich and Halnol (yes, I made up the name) are the only two really doing any production, with both churning out nukes and military units. (Munich has the IW) There is also Frankfurt with Wall Street pretty much keeping the economy alive.

Research isn't really important, I have researched everything up to Future Tech 3. I could build SDI but I would much rather focus on units and the spaceships. I'm also far above in tech, no one else even has Lasers or Stealth.

Meanwhile I notice peaceful Gandhi and his 3 cities have been living in harmony. I DoW on him and nuke the hell of out him, and then raze most of his cities. I then set up a little trick so that he does not get destroyed. I settle a city in the place of where Delhi was ("New Delhi") and a city where Bombay was ("New Bombay"). I wait for him to capture then, and then I raze Vijaranara. Unfortunately Judaism spread to New Delhi before I could raze Vijaranara. Then I vassaled Gandhi...kind of odd though, that only the 3 monotheistic religions were left. (I also WB'd the name of the city he refounded in the place of Vijaranara to "New Vijanarra" :P)

So anyway, I managed to take a look at my spaceship. Dortmund will finish a casing in 30 turns, and Hamburg will take 12 turns for one casing and then 12 more for the next casing. Pretty much the ENTIRE WORLD is covered in desert right now.

So I try to survive. Washington is fighting very fierce, destroying Rameses as well as the Aztec capital. Shaka is doing pretty darn horrible and war weariness is crippling the entire world (except for Gandhi and the Indians).

Eventually I managed to finish the parts. (Hamburg was being invaded and sieged, it was razed the turn after I finished the casing!) It took a few turns more but finally the hard working people of Dortmund put together the final casing, completing the ship. India was also nuked and destroyed on the same turn, which also eliminated Judaism.

I then used a GE to move the capital to Bremen, some city in the mountains. Mountains to the square NW, N, NE, and west, and Bremen was on a hill, and I had also built walls and a castle in it earlier. I put TONS of units in it and hoped that Montezuma would not be able to reach it.

So I gathered up the 4000 best citizens of Germany, as well as 1000 citizens from the two nations of Zululand (only two cities left at that point) and America and some refugees from the former country of India, and loaded them onto the spaceship, and thus Frederick, Gandhi, Shaka and the 5000 citizens left the horrible nuclear planet for space :nuke: (Washington decided to stay behind and destroy the evil Montezuma...also, he was put in charge of taking care of Germany along with another leader now that Frederick was gone)

I was attacked even more fiercely by Montezuma now, he was nuking me left and right and I was nuking him. The Zulu were destroyed three turns after I launched the SS, clearly because their leader had left them. :D

I sent my forces roaming the seas all at Montezuma, taking and razing SEVEN CITIES before my SoD was destroyed.

I then won the game! :king: It was the wildest game I have ever played.

P.S. I played it for a while after I won. I went into military mode and along with Washington we razed all of Montezuma's cities, eradicating Islam and the evil Aztec and Montezuma! I then quickly backstabbed Washington.

 It was a terrible war that resulted in only one city left for each of us, San Francisco for him and some lousy city on the former island of India for me. Both cities were nuked and size one with no units defending. Fortunately, I had a Modern Armor near San Fran and I took and razed it, leaving Germany the only civ left on the Earth. :p

I then had a lot of time on my hands so I built some units and razed every road and improvement in the world, and stationed units in the continents to leave no fog, insuring no barbs would spawn. I then built two more cities on the Indian sub continent and played for a bit longer. It was rather depressing to be honest. Nothing but a nuclear fall out covered land, with the only remnants of civilization living on a tiny destroyed island.

Because pollution would have taken too long:lol:

If anything, it should cause a nuclear winter

Easy enough, you just replace the turn to desert with turn to tundra. And it makes more sense too.

"Your lush grassland tile at the very centre of a massive grassy continent has turned into an unworkable tile thanks to global warming"

As par se.

I wish the AI was smart enough be a scared of someone with 20 nukes.
