Monarchist Cookbook Game II

Skimming over the thread again, I'm not quite sure what I was thinking in stopping at 1100BC instead of 1000BC.

Oh, and, out of curiousity, Vale,
Spoiler :
Did Monte found a religion in your game?

(Very nice work, BTW.)

Autosave is your best friend ;-).
Autosave on posts? I dont think that would work, because I was writing it in the thread itself. Now if I was doing my report in another program like Word or something, maybe that would work, but I would never turn on any form of autosave on document work.

What I really needed was a battery back-up that gives you a few minutes of power if your machines power is interrupted. I have used them at work, and they are really invaluable, especially when you have spent an hour repairing a document or adjusting a photo (I worked in the pre-press department of a print shop).

I've played the first round very casually, so no save from me, but here are a few screenshots and random comments (turn 113):
Spoiler :
Early tech path was standard, got two techs from goody huts (I think Agriculture and Mysticism). I built a scout and a few warriors, when I saw copper in the BFC started barracks immediately in prepare for the rush. Then a couple of Phalanxes assisted by chopping, squeezing in a settler somewhere. Nothing special at all, and could have been optimized for sure -- I just went ahead without a lot of pondering about details. Revolted to Slavery fairly late and whipped only twice so far (once on a Phalanx and once on a Settler). I don't like early whipping in the capital because I think it's better to keep it close to maximum as much as possible.

I explored up to Monty's capital, then rushed and eliminated Russia swiftly with my Phalanx stack at minimal losses. He had three cities out at that point that I all kept without further ado. Just before the the war I also settled the northern silver/pig city for the happy faces and commerce.

My own city placement would have been quite different, but since I wanted to keep then Russian cities I made some ad hoc adjustments. I'll fill in the empty areas later as efficiently as possible though.

After the war I quickly settled the southern city to block off Monty.

I've got 6 cities now and my economy has of course tanked (I used up the gold from the conquest for quick research of Masonry and will build the Pyramids next, recovering my research). Barracks will go into all cities to inflate my power rating, hopefully keeping Monty at bay for a while. Libraries will come next and then I'm going to focus on the standard path to Liberalism, and consolidating my empire.

After Rifles I will probably crush Monty and tech to space. We'll see.

Maybe I'll abandon my shadow game and resume from a Best Ball Save instead, we'll see about that ;-)

(Some resource icons are not shown on this picture because it's a mosaic of some overlapping screenshots and I didn't take enough care to have all icons being displayed properly when I took the pictures. Also note that "bare map view" has been enabled, so actually there is some limited fog of war remaining which is not evident from this picture.)

(I popped two techs from goody huts.)

(The spearman was in the build queue of one of the captured cities, not planned.)

(Enough units at the moment for city garrison and fog busting. More workers will come, then some reinforcements and additional settlers to fill in the empty lands successively.)

Weird and abusable game thing:

Spoiler :
lionresourcecy8.jpg

The Lion in this screenshot will ONLY move to the tiles with a red dot. After observing this for a few turns, I have concluded that the black dot has a resource in it- for some reason, animals CANNOT move onto resources. I will found a city 1W of black dot (it has fish 2N of it). So I am sure I will have one of Iron, Coal, Aluminium, Oil, or Uranium. Fantastic.
Very interesting, actually I got a Lion locked in at the exact same spot but didn't know about the move restriction. Well, Bleys will be happy about that, considering his initial settlement decision ;-).

Settled 1 east of initial spot to pick up corn. Early on, got some luck (popping the wheel and then AH from the only 2 huts I saw). I also got the herbal remedy even while building workers at pop 1 (got the health bonus). By the time I actually was ready to whip, all that whip anger was gone. So thats about the best time I could have possibly got it. So there was now a permanent +2 health in my empire. I switched tech from Agriculture to Mining when I popped AH since my workers had stuff to do now and then beelined BW. And found copper was in my fat cross. At this point and knowing that Moscow is close, it is 100% in my mind that I will be rushing Peter. Teched up Agriculture and Pottery while chopping out a settler and building a couple of warriors (worker worker was initial build).

I founded Sparta in 2550BC.

The state of the world at this point as I knew it at this point:
2550overhead.jpg

Athens:
athens2550.jpg

Sparta:
sparta2550.jpg

Chopped/1 pop whipped out a Granary in Athens and started doing queue swapping tricks with a phalanx and a barracks to make sure I could whip a barracks for 2 for maximum overflow before any phalanxes were made. Setting up a 2 pop whip of barracks and then later a library was much easier than trying to 2 pop whip phalanxes with so many awesome tiles in the fat cross that gave entirely too many hammers. I did the same thing in Sparta and so by 2000BC they both had granaries up. Athens had its barracks up and Sparta had it ready to 2 pop whip when it was time:

Here is the world in 2000BC:
2000overhead.jpg

The archer at the bottom there will come into play later.

Athens:
athens2000.jpg

Sparta:
sparta2000.jpg

This is a good screenshot. You can see exactly what I did here to enable 2 pop whipping. The barracks was the first build after the granary was in, but I took it out of the queue the turn before it would have had 30 hammers in it. I then built a phalanx until it was almost done then built a library until I was ready to whip the barracks and then start mass producing phalanxes. When it was time, I got the library ready for a 2 pop whip and whipped it.

Before I went to war, I noticed that archer from earlier running around south of Athens and standing on 0 defense tiles. It was too good an opportunity and I waited until he did it again before declaring and taking St. Petes and killing the wayward archer. St. Pete's had a granary and immediately started work on a barracks.

I worked through his lands pillaging his stuff to minimize his ability to keep producing stuff. He did have iron but hadn't quite hooked it up (I saw the worker mining a hamlet right as I arrived near Moscow. It is the tile NW of Moscow for future reference.

I razed Novgorod and planned on choking him a while but when he for whatever reason left himself with only 3 defenders to try to harass St. Petersburg with 2 Archers and I had around 7 healthy attackers, 3 with CR II and 1 almost healthy CRII axemen and 1 more that was less than almost healthy. I took my chances with it. First three attackers died but the 4th was at 61% and the 5th and 6th were 95+% to kill him.

Coincidentally, on this turn a Great Scientist was born in Athens. I had been working Scientists as needed to constrain growth and also go for an early Great Scientist. He was immediately settled in Athens.

The GS got settled after this screenshot was taken.

Sparta:

Moscow:

St. Petersburg:
stpetersburg.jpg

From here I prioritized getting Novgorod refounded as Corinth asap. A few turns after Peter's demise, I 3 pop whipped a Settler and sent him scurrying over to the spot. Meanwhile the workers were prechopping and improving around St. Petersburg and Moscow in preparation for the Pyramids in St. Petersburg (I had better whip overflow options there with the granary already in place) and to partial build the GW in Moscow if possible as I was quickly running negative gold at 0% research.

As soon as Corinth was founded the workers improved the stone, then chopped and mined the pre-done stuff in Moscow to get some hammers into the great wall. As they moved on the next turn I decided since I could chop it out that turn, to give one of the forests for the pyramids to Moscow to actually take it (the chop would complete it). So no money. But barbs will not be a problem for the most part now.

Meanwhile, St. Petersburg had put some decent hammers into the Pyramids thanks to some nice overflow from its Library. I miscalculated here and overchopped because I forgot I was getting some hammers from the barracks I had prebuilt to whip for this. So the workers that are chopping now need to move on or waste their hammers on more stuff that we don't really need urgently. Pyramids is due next turn.

Athens and Sparta worked on units mostly but after I got the great wall in they both prebuilt walls as a potential substitute for generating a little bit of cash. Also it gives me a power boost without making more military upkeep which is starting to become painful if we don't war soon. Moscow finished the Great Wall and whipped out its granary for 1 a turn or so ago. Corinth kind of sucks. I've got a worker going over to improve the sheep but it will be a while before that city is worth anything more than bonus hammers to walls or HG if we do that.

I'm still at negative money at 100% which is kind of not good. War with monty needs to come sooner rather than later and I suppose I should send my chariots out scouting down there. That was a messed up micromanagement. I held them back to protect against barbs but then when the GW was in that was pretty dumb.

Now here is a seriously WTH moment. I think one of the AI's is reading future hermits thread cause this is insanely early for the GLH to be gone:
seriouslywtfglgonesofast.jpg

Spoiler :
I read through the other reports. I'm surprised nobody else settled Athens 1e to pick up the corn. I expected almost everyone to do something to pick up the corn.

Siggboy's round sounds intriguing to me. I really can't stop kicking myself about razing Novgorod but there really was no way to know Peter would be such an idiot and let me have Moscow like that. If I hadn't razed it and the other stuff had played out similarly I would have another city and would have finished those wonders earlier. And if he just leaves his 5 archers in Moscow like a sane person Novgorod is essentially worthless for a long time.

Spoiler :
I read through the other reports. I'm surprised nobody else settled Athens 1e to pick up the corn. I expected almost everyone to do something to pick up the corn.

I did.

On the cash problem: cottages! You have one in your game. And I like the scientist move. He'd bulb alpha, and there would be no point to that.

Spoiler :
I could have had a hamlet that used to be on top of the (future) iron space but i pillaged that while waiting for some reinforcements because the cash was nice.

The cottages will come soon enough now that the Pyramids is done in a turn. Although I really need another worker or 2 as a settler is getting whipped out of Athens in a turn and it is going down to the jungle area. I'm not revolting until the Settler is on his way even though it will cost me some beakers.

I thought I played very well, But that was before I read vale's report. THe fact that he is almost done with pyramids impresses me. But oh well.
Spoiler :

Turn 65: another phlanx
Turn 68: Meditation done, start priesthood

Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

Turn 73: Finished my last phlanx and sent it over to St petersburg to distract him...; Start Stonehenge only because I don't like to create reinforcements. :D
Turn 78: declare war with 5 phlanx; Finished priesthood start pottery
Turn 80: 2 phlanx of 4 phlanx die trying to take Moscow, Looks bad doesn't it? But wait, He is only left with one archer of his original three.
Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

Turn 81: I take Moscow with no more losses. Moscow starts barracks because I looks like it may have good production.
Turn 83: Finish Stonehenge and start a phlanx to help take St. Petersburg; THe phlanx by St. Petersburg dies...Oh well I don't need him to distract it anymore.
Turn 86: Start another phlanx

Turn 88: Finish phlanx and start oracle.
Turn 94: Finish russia off; Raise St. Petersburg because I wanted it one north...Now I'm not so sure...Oh well.
Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

Turn 96: start sailing? Why because I always put writing off. I don't know why.
Turn 98: Vermin get into the food stores at Moscow. Maybe my luck is running out.
Turn 102: Get oracle and metal casting. I hope everyone likes metal casting.
:D Start a settler because I have only 2 cities.
Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

Turn 105: Moscow connected to capital thanks to all of Peter's workers.
Turn 107: Start a settler in moscow
Turn 108: Start writing now that sailing is done
Turn 110: I wanted to stop here and ask for advice as to what to build next, but the great wall was to alluring; So with the help of a worker I begin chopping it. This is in Athens, btw.
Turn 111: Sparta put up in the pig horse elephant position east of my capital. Start granary in it. A great prophet is born in athens. I quickly add him to insure I get the great wall.
Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

Turn 117: THe great lighthouse is built somewhere far away. Probably to a civilization that has only one city.
Turn 118: Start math
Turn 119: Start another settler in Moscow.
Turn 120: Corinth is set up where Novgood was to get stone for pyramids.
Turn 121: Great wall built in Athens. Boy am I lucky. And Montezuma declares war on me. Probably because I only have 4 phlanx and a warrior. THis one made me laugh.
Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

He has 3 jags and an archer. Pitiful. I'm suprised. I played the next 3 truns and he goes after my capital. And as soon as he declares war I start a phlanx in Athens. Completed one turn before he gets to my capital. I also make the phlanx on Sparta? Move to Athens. He is one turn away when Monte attacks. Monte loses 2 of his jags and his archer on my one phlanx. XD My phlanx from sparta cleans up the last one.
I decided to save here even though I don't believe it is a particularly good place to stop. But I've already gone over the 120 round limit.

Pros: I built stonehenge, THe oracle, and great wall. And you don't have to waste a click declaring war on Monte Because he already did that for us. I didn't want to go to war with him this early but I think it could be possible since he only sent 3 jags and an archer I doubt his protection is very good. I also have metal casting which will help when I beeline optics to meet the other civs because I don't think Monte will be around for much longer.
Cons: I'm at war with Monte. I lost the Great Light house...But who didnt?
I only have barracks up. And I only have 4 cities, And three of them are new.
A look at my cities:

Wow vale, outstanding round indeed. And the +2 health event?

Still have at least Rolo to play, not sure if Hermit is going to have time, and I do still want to see Diamonds report, even if he overshot the cut-off, but I dont think anyone is close to Vale so far. Everyone else seemed to have a minor bad-break here and there.

Spoiler :
GLH in 1450 ?? That is insane, I am only 60ish hammers from finishing it in my own game. I think I can say with some confidence that my own game will not be chosen, though, even though I think the GLH would be pretty solid (check out Monty's land in my save, its prime for GLH cities).

I am going to actually play my own save a bit, totally unofficially, to see if I can still effectively rush Peter and get the Mids once I have that stone city of his. I am curious to see if I had the timing right. "Allowing" Peter to build a couple cities instead of units kind of helps me save on Settlers later, and since his coastal cities would be GLH powered, I could keep them all (except maybe St Pete, raze and move it myself, not sure).

I wont play past that, so I wont be meeting any other AIs, or getting any other kind of advanced info. I should be able to tell by 1 AD if I would have pulled off the gambit. That ok? If anyone else thinks would actually vote for mine, I wont do it. But my idea was to use the GLH to fund a low-cottage SE Hybrid, with an eye on farms, workshops and watermills instead of cottages, that was my plan with it. Heck, I think if I had 1 seafood in Athens I would have 5 more Phalanx's already, and the GLH would be built, and Peter would be all but dead, heh. Its amazing how much production you can get out of a 5F tile.

Spoiler :
I almost never get that health event when it doesn't cripple my early game production to take it. So that was a very positive thing.

Keeper it sounds like you and I had very similar starts with the huts. I think probably the speed difference was a switch to a bw beeline when the hut gods were kind to us and then later focus on getting granaries active as soon as possible. It is kind of sick how much production you can muster when you have good food and granaries. (Plus forests to chop for any extra needed oomph).

I managed to sneak in 45 min today to play out the first round. So far so good. But I leave tomorrow morning and am gone for two weeks :)

Spoiler :

I started by settling 1N for the corn. Otherwise, too low of food for capital.

Started going Ag-AH to get food going. Noticed horses between me and Peter, who I met early.

Met Monty...shudder.

Teched through mining-BW and have copper in capital...phalanx rush on Peter on the way.

Declare war on Peter 1375BC.

Sack St. Pete's right away

Then Moscow

1200BC Get classic lit quest...we should DEFINITELY GET THIS!!!

1150BC Sack Novgorod. Normally I would raze, but it has stone and I want to chop pyramids in Moscow.

1000BC Peter down to 1 highly defended city. I leave it to the group to decide whether peace would be taken or finish Peter off and prepare for the inevitable war against Monty (I'm thinking add cats and attack pre-longbows running 0 slider and rep scientists for necessary research)

How do you post saves?
In the "Post Reply" window (not the "Quick Reply") you will see an icon of a paper-clip. Click it, and find your save.

You should name your save in a way that we know what it is, see some of the other names of saves for the idea. No worries if its not EXACT, just have your name, and the game, like "MC_2_KoS_1000_AD" or something, game, your name, round # (although the date of the save will tell us the round), and date of save.

Glad you got a chance to get the round in hermit, good round too, looks like you also have Peter pretty much smoked.

Sigh, I am depressed by my round, totally blew it moving to that coast. Stupid blue circles, I thought for SURE there was a fish up there!

Yeah, I saw the blue circle too, but wanted the corn. 1E would've been the better decision though in hindsight.

I was thinking corn for 2nd city, with a seafood and the 2 AH resources, Athens would have been sweet.

Oh well, thats why we have the Best Ball format, so that gambit plays like mine and bad breaks like OTAKs wont kill us.
