Very slow turn transitions...

So I'm running a decent computer.

3.2GHz Processor overclocked to 3.5GHz
GeForce 7800GS AGP video card
Windows XP Pro
2GB of RAM (PC3200)

My problem is that of huge maps the turn transition is VERY slow, often taking 1-2 full minutes to move to the next turn. This only occurs late game (about 300+ turns in) I have tried setting the game to the lowest graphics settings, this does not improve the speed at all.

Anyone know if I can speed this up? I don't like taking 45+ minutes for 10-15 simple turns...

Welcome to Civfanatics :band:

1-2 minutes per turn in late game is quite possible on huge maps - because of the huge amounts of cities and units to compute and lots of other stuff going on. You might want to uncheck show friendly moves which might speed things up a bit though...

Settings won't make any difference since AI turns depend on your processor

Thread necromancy, go!

I'm also getting this problem. My computer is full of gigahertz, but often after a few hundred turns on a giant map, turn transitions slow down to a crawl. They go from 10-15 seconds to anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes.

I finally got fed up with this and spent a while in the world editor. I narrowed down the problem to a single worker with scripting issues. In the saved game I attached, I'm experiencing a 2 minute slowdown. If you open the editor and remove the blue worker sitting on a crystal patch just northwest of The Press at the top right corner of the map, the problem goes away and the turn advances normally.

I'm not sure if the slowdown will affect everybody, but I would like to know if there's any other information about this out there. It took me a really long time to find out that the worker was the cause of it all, and I'd like to be able to go through a game without opening the world editor.

Yes, upgrade your cpu or overclock it more.
What kind of cpu do you have, pure gigahertz mean nothing, a 3.5 ghz pentium 4 based ( so also a pentium D) is about as fast as a 2.5 ghz amd 64 cpu, and around 1.8 ghz core 2 duo...

If you really want super speed, you need to pay up, on pc upgrades that is...
Get a good board, a cpu like an E8400 or similar, clock it to 4+ ghz, and off you go :).

Of course, as above there may be game bugs that cause unnecessary processing... But there's nothing you can do about it really, except report the bug... The only thing you can do is upgrade your pc...

That seems like an unusualy long time. i have a 3.4 pentium 4 cedar mill and late game on a regular huge with default civs my time between turns is about 11-12 seconds. About 1 second per civ.

Ok, so here's my rig:

Intel Core™2 Quad CPU 2.4ghz
4gb Physical Memory, 8gb Virtual Memory
256mb GeForce 8600 GTS (1758mb Shared System Memory)
Creative X-Fi w/ Dolby setup

Now I have all effects turned off, graphics settings set as low as possible; despite having a fair computer to be running Civ IV on. I always play huge maps, so that may sneak its way in. But mid-way through a game my turns are taking 15~30 seconds to take, not including the lag for windows to load, automations etc.

Oh, I'm running on Vista SP1 Ultimate 64-bit and playing on Immortal or Deity difficulty.

Any suggestions?

That's essentially the same computer as the one I have, and 15-ish seconds per turn on a giant map is about normal for me. You should really only be concerned when it starts taking upwards of three minutes, in which case you can fix it quickly and cheatingly by opening the world builder, reviewing the entire map and removing all the AI workers that aren't in the middle of a work animation.

A shame, the game is much more pleasant with the one-two second turns of the early game.

Don't worry, once you've killed off enough rival civs, it goes back to 1-2 seconds. :P

But then comes the nightmare of managing hundreds of cities, I suppose...
