Ulayashblah Kingdom (Ulaya Kingdom for short):

Aww you didn't like my name? :(

I will take control of the Colmassa Kingdoms (who afaik are npc).

Colmassa Kingdoms: Through marriage-like connections both forced and not, they will consolidate. As consolidation proceeds they will begin pushing south along the coast. Encounters along the eastern edges with the Coyac and Ahay tribes result in skirmishes for land and/or food. Larger settlements develop.

The Leav kingdom will keep being a buffer state desperately trying to remain independent and playing Aestia and Aarut off each other.

The Poneb empire will keep steadily improving its military technology and remain as adaptive as ever. It will vassal Gapvar (if it hasn't already) and keep expanding to the east. If it comes into conflict with the Sariv and the Sezat, it'll fight back with all its strength. If they start losing, the Poneb will call on all their allies, the Rosk (they'll promise them to stop expanding their influence in OTL Finland, and may even promise a little support against the Thelsing), and even the (*gasp*) dreaded Aestian empire. Once/if they win, they'll annex most of the Sezat kingdom and part of the Sariv kingdoms.

The Rosk kingdom will try to get some of its lost strait-tax-money back somehow (diplomatically, and if needed with threats of war, but not war since they're going to have enough as it is). They'll keep fighting their endless wars against the Thelsing kingdom, while also improving their military technology.

The Thelsing kingdom will keep trying to survive against the richer, more powerful Rosk kingdom. Guerrilla warfare, propaganda (try to start another civil war in the Rosk kingdom), etc. If the Rosk are defeated/have a civil war, the Thelsing will try to take OTL Finland among other land from the Rosk.

The Lanverg kingdom will seek to preserve its culture's "purity" (their culture is the closest to traditional Olan). They'll do their best to remain independent, and will even sell their colony in Greenland to the Aarut if needed. They'll also keep expanding along the Scandinavian coast.

The Aarut kingdom will continue improving their naval technology (by now they should be close to having the best navy in the world since the Navacubi are dead).
In Europe, they will try to get even closer to the Targarotans and make sure Aestia doesn't try to annex Leav. They will give the Rosk kingdom a small share of the taxes they get from the Rosk straits to keep them happy.

They'll seek to consolidate their position in the Americas: they'll buy the Lanverg colony on Greenland for a small amount of money and negotiate with the Targarotans. They'll offer to buy the dying Amarisle colony in the Americas (and won't pay much for it since it's worthless to the Amarisle). A bit later on, they may even slightly expand their territory in Britain.
Throughout this period, the Aarut will encourage Olanic people to migrate to their colonies, including the ones in Britain.

They will expand their colony in northern "Western Asia", but the focus will be on the Caribbean. The Aarut will seek to increase trade with Central America, and they'll be introduced to native luxuries like rubber and tobacco. When they're ready, they'll start a war with the Timiquican Empire at the slightest provocation (such as being too polite and trying to not provoke us :p) and annex it. They will then turn most of it into large tobacco, rubber, etc plantations.

As the native population (now mostly enslaved) keeps dying, they will start resorting to other options. First, they (these "they" are the wealthy plantation owners, of course) shall try to hire Olanist colonists, but that will lead to many more problems. Eventually, they'll buy slaves from other places (such as the Olanist pirates; see below) to make up for the dead Timiquican population. If the Poneb beat the Sariv+Sezat, they will try to buy as many Sariv and Sezat slaves as possible. When that well runs dry, they'll just buy slaves from anywhere they can get them. This will cause the slaves to become very ethnically diverse, and eventually as plantation owners realize how good this is, they'll seek to increase the diversity even further. A huge international slave market will develop in the Aarut kingdom.

Sometime before/during/after the Timiquican war, the Aarut king will declare the Aarut empire. Although conquests in "Western Asia" will continue, they will for the most part be done by colonist/merchant armies. The Aarut government is to focus on developing a very efficient bureaucratic system and hopefully increase the empire's stability.

Merchants in the Taretara kingdom are to continue acting normally (and be a little biased (favorably) towards Olanist people). They will start hiring Aarut soldiers (many of which should still be stuck in Taretara jobless), acquiring bigger and bigger armies as they start fearing for their security in a foreign kingdom. Eventually, a charismatic bald soldier-turned merchant with one of the biggest armies around will unite most of the unemployed soldiers and many small and/or paranoid merchants into a large pirate/merchanting force ("Then I thought, who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone,
I'm gonna be a pirate on the ri-ver Saskatch-e-wan!") (there's going to be the pirate fleet, which pirates around, and then a lot of merchants flying the pirate flags for protection (in exchange for a vow and small fee, of course): any who sink a ship flying the pirate flag get hunted down by the main pirating fleet).

The pirates will seek to avoid conflicts with large fleets (such as Taretara's) as best they can, and will accept merchants/soldiers of any nationality among them, although they'll still be mostly Olanist. In a short time, nearly all Olanist (and many of other nationalities) merchants will be flying the pirates' flag and their fleets will be merged with the pirates'. Eventually, after a few months, when Taretara's king is very mad and rumors about Taretara blaming Aarut reach the Aarut court, part of the Aarut fleet will sail down to meet with the pirate fleet. The pirates, being very respectful of the Aarut, will agree to stop raiding ships that bear European flags (including the Tezan, unless their fleet is pathetic). In exchange, the Aarut kingdom will help them establish a small kingdom in western Africa and offer all of the pirates positions in the Aarut Royal Navy. Once the slave trade gets going, the pirate kingdom should get quite rich and even more powerful.

Wow, thanks qoou!!!

(and you also tuxedohamm :) )

The Deadline of Death has passed, however I will be online for half an hour or so.

Uh, Aestian Empire:

Attack neighbors! Be a mean neighbor, become continental pariah, possibly break apart.

Just wanted to say this still lives and I'm working on it, if anyone is interested :)

I have bascially been wasing my time recently. I will update this 'within days'. However I'm probably going away next weekend, so there could be another wait after that...

Anyway, I'm determined to push this to the modern age before ending it. Just a few more centuries left now :)

As always Daft, I am a loyal player to the end. If DaftNES 2 didn't falter our following then a couple weeks surely won't.

Who knew the Yujin could expand that far? Certainly not me

I look like I have the largest land empire... :o

I am you silly... ;)

Little Amestrian States are little.

NJ Takaraji btw.

Am I awake? No nasty Aestia blocking Olan expansion into Europe, huge tracts of land in the Americas, etc.

Also (this is probably going to be in the update), but my huge slave trade didn't happen because New England isn't as cash-crop-y as the Carribean, right? And the pirates because it was either way too OOC or way too weak.

Edit: Lol at "Kronahar colony". They must be damn proud of their little 1-mile island :p.
The Lanverg have a major city in the frozen Scandinavian north?

Era 13: Exploration, Recovery and Rivalry

Disease and war were once again major features during this era. Yet there was also renewed optimism by 1750 AD (led mainly by the eastern world), and a growing sense of rivalry and competition for prestige among the major powers.

In Europe, the Argine dynasty came to rule over the 'Targar Union', and many of the Targarota kingdoms and states beyond. Mutual antagonism and aggressive expansionism by the Argine Empire and the Aestian Empire resulted in a series of wars, ending with the famous Twenty Years War (actually 1676 to 1699 AD). This war grew to involve the Tezan kingdom in the south and the Aarut in the north as major players by the war's end, and dragged in much of the rest of western Europe at some point along the way.

The Twenty Years War saw the largest armies ever assembled in Europe since the original invasion of Tagarot's horde some 1,300 years earlier. The first battles were the most bloody, as cannons and smaller firearms were used on a large scale, while tactics had not really changed since earlier centuries. Mercenaries were hired from across Europe and beyond. In particular, Vespian tacticians and siege engineers were hired by both sides, which gradually changed the way the war was fought. Mass unarmoured musketeers made an appearance by the war's end, although pikemen were still needed to protect them.

The end result of the War was the weakening of the Amestrian sphere, and the dissolution of the Aestian Empire into Ustri and new Amestrian states, while the Argines expanded their power far beyond the Mern[1]. Other powers also gained, notably the Leav kingdom and the new power of Sturmault which rose from one of the smaller Amestrian kingdoms, due to having a well-trained army and enlightened leadership. Other powers like the Geldut and Amarisle lost out - Amarasile disappeared from the map, divided by Kilamys and Argines on the mainland, while the Kronahar were finally able to unify the south of their home island. Tezan lost territory in mainland Europe, but it managed to gain some of the Gintara[1] islands and began venturing across the Atlantic...

Before and after the Twenty Years War, there were of course other wars and civil wars across Europe. The Lanverg Kingdom faced trouble from the Asuat peoples, whose culture it was attempting to suppress, but this did not last long, as the Asuat proved too vital for the whaling and fur-trapping trade of the far north. The neighbouring kingdom of Thelsing became a vassal of Rosk after several wars. The Rosk Kingdom also gained lands from the Aarut and the dying Aestian Empire, through mostly peaceful means, and was eventually able to set up a common trade league across the Baltic.

The Vespe kingdoms united with the western Kaliks after a series of small wars and royal marriages, forming the Curias Kingdom, whose army was recognised as the best-trained and best-equipped in Europe. The eastern Kaliks formed their own alliance in response, yet remained on good terms with Curias, as both cultures were now very similar. Together they also provided a haven for scholars and academics of all kinds.

In the south, the Mutyl Kingdom became home to a new 'progressive' sect of Wainism, which was condemned as heresy by the Tezan, and suffered invasions by the Yansalan-Wainists of North Africa. Mutyl became an ally of the Orimudan Alliance, which fought a series of exhausting wars against the Saratian Empire, which was in turn stubbornly holding on to its new capitol of Varuzan (old Pelonar) and still contesting control of the Kuliuz[3], despite suffering constant power struggles and rebellions sparked by religious and cultural problems.

(It may be worth nothing that the Holy Yansalan Empire was actually growing more tolerant of other religions at this point, while most of Europe was now home to so many different religions and cults that they rarely became issues during war or any other time).

The resurgent Marzhung rampaged across the eastern edges of Europe from around 1670 AD, after being re-united and led by the warlord Zuratahn, later known as Emperor Marzhung I. The Sezat and Sariv kingdoms, weakened by their joint invasion of the Poneb Empire, suffered the full brutality of the Marzhung hordes (the 'mountains of skulls' are well documented), who also raided deep into Poneb lands before retreating. The progress of urban settlement in the region was halted for a while. But Poneb made alliances with the Rosk kingdom and was able to keep control over the Gapvar and Griut lands. Meanwhile the Sariv regrouped beyond the Astar Mountains[4], and the Sariv kingdoms were reduced to one survivor, the kingdom of Variv, which fought back from near extinction to become a respectable power in the following decades.

The Marzhung later defeated the Keyzad of Nadzavosk, which had been weakened by cultural and religious divisions. But Nadzavosk recovered quickly as a vassal of the Marzhung, and when the Keyzads of Serezyl and Urgury were peacefully united in 1710 AD, it was partly out of the mutual need to resist the power of Nadzavosk (but partly to survive the general turmoil in the region following the end of the Twenty Years War).

Over the course of the century, unhealthy conditions in marching armies and besieged cities helped to spread another wave of deadly diseases across Europe, which delayed recovery from all the wars and civil wars. By 1750 AD, both the Middle East and the Far East had an advantage in terms of wealth, while the Far East had an even greater advantage in manpower...

Beginning with the long reign of Empress Taina (the 'Empress of Peace'), the Varakan Empire achieved great success with diplomacy (or, as some scholars claim, their motives just happened to be the same as their neighbours). An alliance with the Marzhung freed those 'barbarians' to focus on exploiting weakness among the powers of eastern Europe, while it freed the armies of the Varakans and their vassals to focus on other borders. As the Tanyura Katan in India expanded from a vassal state to an empire in its own right, it continued to offer token homage to Varaka. Also, despite the promise of control over the valuable Kuliuz[2], the Sumetche Empire did little more than spectator in the Orimudian-Saratian wars, and instead allied with Varakans in several wars against the Holy Yansalan Empire.

While Varaka seemed to prosper, Yansalan power was eroded on several fronts, including the southern Nile and the Pargian Sea [5], where despite some recapture of land from the Nalkut Kingdom, the Manzuru Empire continued to expand its power and influence. The Tezan Kingdom of north-west Africa slowly began to take over as the centre of Wainist power and influence.

Yet Yansalan culture still flourished, and new books on physics, astronomy and medicine were published. They, together with the Sumetche, Orimudans and western Varkans, now had a level of knowledge and education that was far in advance of most of Europe. Their cities were healthier, and suffered less from the deadly diseases which raged elsewhere. They also experimented with (immobile) steam engines to pump water, and with primitive devices for making and storing 'electricity' (as it was later known). Similar progress was made in the Far East...

This was a new golden era and revival for Yueren culture, which rivalled or exceeded the achievements of the Middle East, and produced many great literary works of its own at this time, concerning history, medicine, chemistry and physics (although some claim that older books were just re-written from older sources, and much of this knowledge had already been known to the Yueren scholars for centuries). At the same time, the Zhihui Empire became more chaotic, isolationist and tied closer to the religion of Shyinism. The revival of Yueren culture owed much to the slow unification with the Yanshi Kingdom in the east.

By 1650 AD, the leaders of Yanshi had become some of the most influential figures within the Yueren alliances, even if they were not actually the most powerful. Aside from a new interest in science and learning, the Yanshi also convinced several Yueren states to commit to a joint venture of shipbuilding and exploration, to be carried out on a huge scale - both in terms of numbers of ships, and the size of the ships themselves (and of course, the resources needed). The beginnings of industrial machinery and assembly-line methods could be seen in the dockyards of the Yanshi and Yueren cities at this time...

All the shipbuilding and voyaging was not just an attempt at increasing trade and influence - it was mainly a response to the Takaraji Union, which (together with its allies and vassals) was threatening to take control of the shipping routes across the whole western Pacific coast. Takaraji was also becoming a rival to the Yueren and Yanshi in the fields of science and learning, and had even dared to propagate its own version of the old Yueren written language across south-east Asia, to the outrage of traditional Yueren scholars.

With trade routes, influence and prestige all at stake, these two spheres fought each other with as much energy as the wars seen elsewhere. But the battles were fought mostly over sea, rather than land, and wars were mostly fought between vassals, mercenaries and 'privateers' rather than overt warfare as in Europe.

In the north, the Takaraji struggled to keep the northern Waeluta peoples on their side, who often cooperated with Yanshi seafarers. But in the south, the Takaraji gained the mainland coastal territories of Miniashi (formerly under Tiandishi/Tuizen rule), while the Yujin Kingdom remained a loyal vassal and expanded its colonies southwards in the name of the Takaraji rulers, and of mutual profit. The Yujin gained partial control of the southern straights from the Dagon kingdoms (which remained divided, though they had conquered the rival Ulayonta kingdom) and established links with the Ceyloni Kingdom of southern India.

Ceyloni seafarers proved a great asset to Yujin, yet they also convinced the Yujin leaders to finance costly expeditions into the far south, searching for a fabled continent of golden and silver cities (perhaps, as some historians later claimed, these were distorted tales of South America). What they did find was Australia, and arid land with curious animals and natives, yet with no great riches to trade or plunder. By 1750, the Yujin-Ceyloni colonies in and around Australia were being slowly abandoned.

Meanwhile, ships of the Yanshi and Yeuren made their own voyages into the Indian Ocean (some actually went beyond southern Africa), and small colonies were founded in the southern Zuli Islands[6] in competition with the Yujin (the Yujin had conquered some of these by 1750 AD). The Yanshi also ventured right across the northern Pacific (with some help from Waeluta tribes) to the continent of America (this was the first confirmed documented voyage to America by the Yueren or Yanshi, though there is evidence of many secret voyages in previous decades and centuries). By 1720, the Yanshi had even founded colonies on the western coast of North America.

By that time however, the Takaraji had helped the unify the Kamewai[7] islands deep in the Pacific (which they had stumbled upon decades earlier) and had established a colony there, from which they made regular trade expeditions to the west coast of the Americas (often as far south as the Colmassa Kingdoms), gaining influence among powerful native rulers. The Americas were becoming another area of competition with the Yanshi.

Back in mainland Asia, the Yeuren faced another threat after 1740 AD as the new Akuden kingdom, made up of several different steppe peoples, invaded from the north. By 1750 AD, several northern cities had been completely destroyed, their inhabitants massacred. The other Yeuren states rallied to the defence of the north, and some sold off their ships to friends in the Zuli Islands and Indian Ocean. Only the Yanshi continued to put much effort into challenging Takaraji for control of the seas.

Thanks to the Guraj Empire, India could boast some academic achievements of its own. The Guraj had long been keen importers of knowledge from both east and west, and they had a wealth of new influences to draw upon during this era. Records tell that Guraj Emperor Uhlajalha VII was fascinated with machinery, and even had a Sumetchen steam-powered water pump built in the grounds of his palace. Guraj territory, though, was gradually pushed to the eastern edge of India (gaining a higher percentage of ethnic-Agrian population), as the Tanyurans advanced from the west in the name of great Varakan.

India remained divided - the Kaj Empire sometimes joined the fight against Tanyurans, but only if it could gain land for itself. The Vijpura Empire fragmented into small states, later absorbed by the Zhulharasa kings of the south.

In the Americas, disease continued to take a terrible toll on native populations (especially as new contacts were established with both east and east). The leaders of Lantan faith declared that a 'great nightmare' had come to the peoples of the continent, but the promised great awakening never seemed to arrive. While some of the larger societies were able to absorb the impact of the diseases, others continued to decline, or disappeared altogether.

Amongst the native powers, there were only two notable changes - the collapse and replacement of the Ilameca Empire by the Tulkimaceh Empire in central America, and the sudden rise of the Amasa Empire in the far south. The other changes were a result of the foreigners, particularly the Aarut, though other powers gradually entered the scene, and fought battles with each other that only sometimes related to events back home.

The colonial drive of the Aarut proved hard to stop. By 1655 AD, the Danahamei Kingdom (the nearest civilised state to the Aarut colonies, one already weakened by disease and division) had been conquered by an unauthorised expedition of heavily-armed European 'adventurers' (mostly from Aarut and Lanverg, but some from other parts of northern Europe) in alliance with other native tribes. Within a decade, the whole of former Danahamei territory was claimed for Aarut and dotted with fortified outposts of Europeans.

Exploration into the far north followed, where outposts were built to trade for animal furs from local tribes. At the same time, the struggling Amarisle colonies were absorbed with little fighting. The emboldened Aarut colonists then set their sights on the huge Mantahu Empire in the south. Perhaps wishing to trade for European weapons and knowledge, the Mantahu leaders had boldly decided to welcome Aarut explorers, allowing them deep into the empire - which, as the Aarut soon discovered, was being wracked by new outbreaks of disease, and showing signs of collapsing into civil war...

Yet the writings of Aarut explorers also speak of their amazement at the great cities of Mantahu, with majestic Lantan temples built of finely carved stone, and markets full of goods from as far away as South America, all unlike anything they had seen further north. Around the same time, other Aarut expeditions were also finding the great cities of the Carribean and Central America. The native American cultures were hardly at their best, but clearly made a huge impression on Aarut writers of the era - although not enough of an impression to deter them from attempting hostile invasions.

From around 1667 AD, various groups of Aarut 'adventurers' set out from the northern colonies to invade the Mantahu Empire, in the hope of carving out a large piece of territory for themselves. Most groups had less than 500 men, and none had official backing. Most met with disaster - some local factions were gained as allies, but most others soon turned hostile. Mantahu soldiers wearing composite armour of metal and fabric proved able to stand up to Aarut soldiers in close combat. And, while the native population had been decimated by disease, they still greatly outnumbered the Aarut. Some survivors later faced trial and execution for disrupting the peace with the natives, as Aarut authorities began to tighten their control of the northern colonies.

Still, after repelling the first European incursions, the Mantahu Empire did eventually collapse into civil war. Later generations of Aarut colonists and settlers found themselves siding with various native factions at different times. The eastern territories soon reorganised themselves as a republic based on older Panto traditions, while the west remained fragmented for decades, until by 1750 AD it had been pieced together by a new 'emperor' with the backing of the Aarut - although not quite a puppet state, it was dependent on Aarut military forces to help maintain order, especially along the Atlantic coast.

Meanwhile, the Aarut King had given official blessing for a war against the Carribean island empire of Timiquican, which seen as an easier and richer target, and one that stood in the way of Aarut ambition to control trade in the region. The cannon-armed ships of the Aarut seemed invincible at first, though they later proved vulnerable to swarms of highly manoeuvrable Timiquican boats, full of fierce boarding-warriors. The Timiquicans fought back ferociously at every stage, having had plenty of practice with island warfare over the past few centuries.

By 1720 AD, the Aarut had managed to conquer many islands and parts of the central American mainland, effectively crippling the Timiquican Empire, and had also captured part of the neighbouring Hulat Empire. But it had been costly - the Aarut eventually pulled out of the Timiquican mainland, facing constant attack by skirmishers and raiders, while many Aarut soldiers began to die from strange diseases during land campaigns in the tropical climate. Hostilities continued (Timiquicans and Hulat continued to fight each other too), and the level of trade did not return to its former heights, forcing the Aarut to turn to plantations for growing sugar and other things considered luxuries in Europe. Around the same time, rival powers were now arriving from Europe - Taretara and Tezan - and these were able to capture island colonies of their own from the Hulat Empire.

In the following decades, Aarut began to take a more cooperative stance towards the native Carribean powers, and began to make deals with them to contain any further expansion by the new colonial rivals. Privateers and pirates also began to prowl the waters in much greater numbers, especially Kronahar ships sailing from their new outpost in the Ausra Islands[8], alongside new Kilamys settlements. By the 1740's, there were many privateer fleets fighting unofficial wars with each other, and some islands changed hands regularly. Many natives also found their way onto these fleets, and some European ships also found there way into the hands of native powers.

The privateer fleets were not contained to the north Atlantic - Since 1625 AD, Aarut explorers and traders had been venturing along the coast of South America (mostly peacefully), and they had built up a string of fortified trade posts by 1750 AD. Taretara also begun venturing to the southern continent after 1720 AD, opening another area of competition, while facing opposition from the native Anukarac kingdom of the Anuca[9].

The Nacubi States of southern Africa (last remnants of the former Navacubi Empire, before it was replaced by Taretara) also began to venture across the Atlantic to South America in search of new trade routes, further complicating things there. The Nacubi were simultaneously fighting off incursions by the Taretara into the south of Africa, and began to make alliances with the Aarut (and even helped them create a short-lived colony on the west coast of Africa). The Nacubi were in need of friends as they were also facing pressure of annexation by the Hom Empire, to whom they remained vassals. Nonetheless, Hom ships sometimes accompanied the Nacubi on their voyages to America.

Old documents from this time also hint at first contacts with Takaraji ships sailing right around the tip of South America into the Atlantic coast. The 'civilised' powers had now reached every corner of the world...

Its now around 1750 AD.
