NERFSNES - Boring Times

The Po People declared that this is the beginning of the Second Plaque of the damned. They set up military camps in chockpoints at the alps hoping to funnel their enemies into kill zones. Offering citizenship for 5 years of labor or 2 years of defense the Centi helped the Po Republic secure the mountainous borders.. just in time for the first family to arrive...

They rode in past a cart of copper and slashed the merchants. A small group of 30 Chariots in all they slashed and shot through the first wall and reache the Celtic City of Mihan before they are stopped. To the east another group of 40 broke through a coastline fort and was stopped only outside of a Remulan City Called Ravenni. Slowly between waves of the barbarians they added two more gates to all their defenses and a twin barrack/armoury building just inside. After 300[1] years Europe finally settled down. As did the Po Confederation.

300 years since it started at 1000.

That would be nice

Hear that, people? Invade your neighbors, create breakaway factions in existing states, anything interesting and interactive so that--uh--I don't have to make stuff up all by myself.

I'm working towards it. It's just that I'm so very far away from any other players!

Spoiler :
Next turn, I plan to have my people do some "exploring". :)

OOC: I'm not being mean, but flyingchicken did say meta-story conflict. I promise I'll do simliar or worse for Dalran, anyway...

EDIT NOTE: AndrewG, feel free to create a faction in my area to wreck havoc in my area if you like.

The West Wradyslaw- A Legacy
During the wars with the Po Republic, the West Wradyslaw were determined to win themselves land. A small faction advocated peace with the Po in exchange for citizenship, but the power of the Chiefs and the natural hostility of soldiers to the enemy prevented this.

In time, the Po Republic would beat back the enemy at the gates- chariot warriors would break through ever more rarely, and never do enough damage to justify the incursion. But this victory was not without price.

A West Wradyslaw state survived on the former lands of the Centi, who enemies of the Po knew could reliably fight on their side. Worse, the rising power of Taxana created an equal rival to the Po, willing to exploit this situation.

The Conquests of Sakana
(OOC: Actually, I think I'm doing a bit too much on local affairs. I'll try to do equal to this story on other people-related ones, though)

Part 1: Gaining Intelligence
Sakana reached Dalran in 953 BC, with a force totalling 30,000 men. Believing that his people would never be safe as long as the "Dalranese race" survived, he was determined to wipe them all out to make the new homeland safe.

As he realised, he had two great weaknesses. First, he could not concentrate his armies in one place- he did not have the means to supply them with food. Second, once his people had conquered enough land to live on their resolve to continue would plummet, making further campaigns difficult. He also had little intelligence on the locals- he had to question conquered peoples for what information he had.

Guessing from his intelligence that there were two states (he mixed up Danion and New Dolensach), one stronger and one weaker, Sakana decided to invade Danion. His armies were divided into three forces of 10,000 men, which remained close to each other so he could take command of any one when required.

Unknown to him, the King of Ysora and the Viceroy of the Viceroyalty were considering the situation as an opportunity (the King of New Dolensach was fuming that they didn't even know he existed, but this was irrelevant). Whether or not, they reasoned, this barbarian won, they could seize much of Danion before he could react.

Obro, King of Danion, was not worried by the South Wradyslaw- he had an army of 100,000 men himself. But Ysora and the Viceroyalty together had 70,000 men- attacking at the same time as the barbarians, they represented a dire crisis.

At the battle of Dashan, Obro defeated both Ysora and the Viceroyalty at the cost of only half his army. Impressive as this victory seemed, it would later open Sakana's road to conquer all three Dalranese powers.

Meanwhile, Sakana had managed to recruit the services of Kratho, a diplomat who knew both South Wradyslaw and Dalranese languages. On his advice, Sakana issued a proclamation of full religious tolerance for the Northern culture, and promised to restore the North to them as their own. By this means, he managed to recruit a further 10,000 Northern warriors.

Obro- The King of Danion during the early part of the wars

Part 2: The Fall of Danion

i: To the Battle of Masein
King Obro was horrified at this turn of events- the barbarians, far from being a mere opportunity for his other enemies, now appeared as they were- a mortal threat even by themselves.

To counter this, the King marched northward, hoping for battle. By the time he reached the South Wradyslaw army, however, Danion itself had already fallen. He knew that if he lost this battle, all was lost...

At the battle of Danion, Obro was indeed victorious. Sakana lost half his army in battle, and had to withdraw to prevent the destruction of all it. It was believed that the threat was passed, and Obro even considered the possibility of conquering Ysora or Viceroyalty lands before they could recover.

Meanwhile, Sakana faced an internal challenge. Drusuli, one of his best generals up until now, argued that he was a failure as a leader. Sakana countered this by challenging him to a duel. Victorious in it, he removed the primary challenger. He was safe, for now.

As Obro marched north, he expected to be able to destroy the barbarians. By now, he was overconfident- the barbarians, he said, had overextended themselves and would surely flee northward. He was wrong.

Sakana decided to feign retreat, exploting the fact the South Wradyslaw language was not well known. He reinforced this impression by burning the crops of Westerners as he left, preventing him from feeding off the land if he advanced again. Obro, as expected, pursued his forces in the hope of victory.

The culmination of this was called the Battle of Masein. In reality, the Danion army was in Masein itself while Sakana's army was on the hill above it. Both armies were tired by this point, so for one night neither expected battle.

ii: Battle of Masein
Sakana was by this time desperate. If he lost this battle, he would be overthrown by his men- even the territories he had already gained outside Dalran would be tenous. Worse, he and his family would be killed.

Circumstances were not as bad as he believed. Obro, expected that Sakana's last resort strike would be a night attack, kept his men awake in anticipation. After a few hours, he decided to march up the hill- but Sakana's night watch detected his advance.

The result was a desperate melee at the top of the hill. Sakana, however, saw his opportunity. Rapidly getting together what men he could, he had a soldier with good eyesight help him direct them around the enemy forces.

Meanwhile, Sakana himself focused Kratho and, with him by his side, hijacked a Danion chariot. Pretending to be the driver, he had Kratho cry "RETREAT!" in Danionese, causing panic in Obro's forces.

By 6:00 A.M, the battle was over. Obro himself had fought valiantly during it, but by now was barely alive. Danion had now fallen.

Part 3: The Fall of the Viceroyalty

i: Securing Danion
Senhire, King of the Viceroyalty, believed this to be his chance.

BT Orders:

All tribes will expand militarily, and begin to settle down.

Just follow the outline I had, and focus on military and economy ;)

The Great Cataclysm:
An excerpt from History of the Americas Part 1.

Many modern-day historians believe that a great catastrophe destroyed much of Central American civilization before 1000 B.C., as they haven’t found many artifacts from this time period. What they have found that dates to around 500 B.C. is a manuscript describing a great cataclysm. This book will now present what historians have determined from their studies of the text and other discoveries.

There were a few warring tribes before 1000 B.C. The two most dominant of these were the Lokitlan, and the Midland. The Midland was a loose confederation of tribes, which covered most of the Central American coastline. The Lokitlan was a smaller tribe that was located inland and was made up of a fierce group of warriors. Each member was trained from birth in the ways of war.

In 1000 B.C. though, the organization of tribes all changed. Most people believe that there was a great meteor strike just off the coast of the Americas. This meteor strike would have cause tidal waves and earthquakes. The dust and earth tossed up by the strike darkened the skies for days. The Lokitlan determined that this was a sign that their gods were displeased. They attacked every tribe around them without warning, taking many prisoners. They sacrificed these prisoners day and night over a period of two weeks until the skies cleared and the rivers had run red with blood.

The skies cleared and the Lokitlan were pleased. They were the only major tribe left in the vicinity. They changed their name to the Mecixia meaning, “The god’s chosen” in the old Lokitlan tongue. They also started to call their land Tlacizo. The meaning has since been lost, as the Lokitlan language underwent rapid changes around this time as well.

BTW flyingchicken, maybe you should make your own stories? Not to the point where it becomes an (additional) chore, but if you have your own story ideas you may as well use them.

The Shanvan
The Shanvan were a Cordax tribe near the Mecixia just after the Great Collapse. Like the Mecixia, their name meant "The god's chosen" in their own language. During the assaults around 1000 BC, it is speculated that they fled southward from the attacks.

Legends tell of a leader, Kevana, who rallied the Shanvan at this point. Arguing that they were God's Chosen, and the attack was unprovoked, he managed to persuade them to go to war.

The Tlacizo were the only major tribe remaining. However, most of the tribes in the area were angry. The skies had cleared, but they refused to believe that the Tlacizo festivals were responsible.

The result was the Compact of Revenge- an alliance of every tribe the Tlacizo had attacked, determined to wipe them from the face of the earth...

I add my stuff on update time, which is supposed to be tonight, which means you guys have about three to four hours to post and/or PM stuffs.

I'll get onto it...

NOTE: flyingchicken, you can disregard this stuff if you didn't see it before you started the update.

Shenafon up to the Wodakan Wars
Shenafon was a town state to the west of Laward. It would never become anything near as great as Laward as it's height, but it would dominate Sadion for hundreds of years. It would leave no legacy significant to the world or Sadion, but for a time it would rule...

The rise of Shenafon began in roughly 920 BC. At this point, Laward was reeling from the loss of empire but knew it could not defeat the Jesranites if the other peoples helped them. On the other hand, the other states feared Jesranite hegemony replacing Lawardian domination.

Soon, the state of Jalsenor gave Shenafon a deal. In exchange for supporting the efforts of the much smaller town to create a Neutrals Leauge (to combat Lawardian domination under Jesranite leadership, and to combat Jesranite hegemony), they would in exchange be given the leadership. Shenafon had less then a fifth of the strength of Jalsenor (which was substantially weaker then Laward), but it was the closest the Neutrals had to a serious contender (on it's own) to the power of each Leauge. It was also too weak at this point to be dominant.

Wodakan Wars:

Introduction:
Around this time, Wodakan was a dying empire. About 100 years prior, the King, hoping to streamline administration, had appointed Governors to the Empire- each for a quarter. But the resulting Wodakan Civil War had weakened royal power, and in time all four Governors became hereditary. They each had a certain degree of de facto independence- particularly the overnory of the Sanghai (a southeastern Governory), which had not only gone to war independently, but had at times disobeyed direct royal orders to cease expansion east of the Jordan.

King Hensho of Wodakan had managed to regain a degree of influence over the Empire, and most of the Governors were willing (for various concessions) to support him in war. Hoping to gain a new power base, he hoped to overcome expected supply difficulties and conquer Cyprus.

Wodakan Manipulation:
The first issues were finding a pretext for war and a way to secure sufficent supplies for the campaign (fishing could deal with some of that, but would not entirely solve the problem). The total Sadion and Wodakan navies were correctly assesed as being roughly equal, making the long supply line to Sadion tenous at best.

Opportunity knocked when Desanan, a Lawardian with a claim to the now abolished throne, came to Wodakan to request help. Hensho knew that if he attacked immediately, the war would be seen as a pretext- meaning that the Sadion states would unite against him.

To counter this, Desanan was secretly given funding to begin an uprising against Laward. The money could be traced fairly easily, but as expected the other Sadion states considered it not worth their while to deal with the problem.

But what Hensho could not have foreseen was that the Governor of Archasan, one of his northwestern territories, attempted to launch a seperate invasion. The reasoning behind this gesture was an omen, which his prophets had interpreted as him being destined to conquer Sadion.

The fleet was starved and too weak to be a significant force by the time it reached Laward, but it reminded the Sadion states of the potential threat.

Due to stuff beyond my control (i.e. a computer with Windows 98 not automatically installing stuffs for my flash drive), I will write the update tonight and will post it the soonest possible time tomorrow (in my time). No more major input will be accepted from this post on, though little cultural things are still appreciated. :)

My computer had some problems...can I still write some general "orders"? If I can, the Neapolian Chiefdom chould expand in Tauria, thanks to an economical crisis that will hit the other two Chiefdoms. When the Neapolian will conquer in Metauripolis, the Chiefdom will be renamed to "The Second Taurusian Kingdom". The Kingdom will expand without much problems in Tauria until 1300 a.F. (1000 BC). The crisis and the Neapolian expansion will oblige a lot of people coming from the opther three Chiefdoms to migrate, colonizing the Hetrenian Ocean (Western Mediterranean). The targets of the colonization will be: Gena (OTL's Liguria), Genuipolis (OTL's Genoa), Tersia (OTL's Provence), Terselia (OTL's Marseille), The River Vaurus (OTL's Rhodanus), Zeria (OTL's Corsica), Fusia (OTL's Spain), Fusiapolis (OTL's Barcelona), Terceia (OTL's Cartagena).
In the colonies a new type of governement, the Republic, controlled by the Great Chancellor, will appear, and it will be diffused everywhere in the Taurusian world, particularly in Cosentia and Sariana, where mercantile colonial republic will develop.
Religiously, the Taurusian Polytheism will disappear, and the 3 Henotheism will expand everywhere in teh Taurusian World, but in 1287 a.F. (1013 BC) a new religion will appear, the fusion of the 3 henotehism, the Cult of the Triforce, based on the three forces of the three main gods, Hetreno's Courage, Saria's Knowledge, Etnio's Power.

Fusia, Barcelonia and parts of Savory is under the Baci Kingdom of Guin, the only Guin Power left after the Invasion (forgot) and an Ally of Po. They are a trader of tin and a miner of Copper and Silver.

Venti

The Venti are a large Normad Tribes of the Baltic. They are squat and muscular. With long feet and usually blond/brown hair and gray eyes. Their sociaty is based on the Prima Heirs, who recieves half of what the Patarach has worked while the Burial takes a quarter and the others take a quarter.

Terinti

A Minor Population boom after Migrations of Centi and the Chariot riders changed the Race. Although True Venti still live in Scandinavia on the Baltic Coasts Terinti, a Mixture of Agriculteral Venti and Centi. These people still have the Ventian Culture but embraced Agriculture.

Huritun Confederation and Co.

In about 800 B.C. first 'not accident' glass is made by those in OTL Prussia on the sandy shores. They became rich and expanded the. Huritun Confederation is a Cheifdom based on trade.

However, the other tribes, who have been growing larger and stronger over the years, are suddenly pushed out by the growing Huritun Confederation. The Ruthi and the Grutin Confederations grew to protect from the Huritun but the vast majority dissapeared... From a mass migration south

Migration

Fifty years later (750) in the Celtic Tribes of the Rhine large muscle bound men march out of the forest. Behind them are families and on their shoulders are large axes. They are the result of the Terinti Migration. Their names are not known but they advanced into three major areas: Yujul (OTL Biscay) Bay from around Neanther River. The Second was traced from OTL Bavaria to across Tultoi(OTL Danube) River and settled in OTL Croata. The Last was traced from OTL Warsaw to settle in OTL Moldavia and Bulgaria.

At about 740 they begun to affect trade to the Po Republic. The migrationers didn't set up kingdoms but destroyed the old chiefdoms and made tribes and villages along the coasts of seas and shores of rivers. The Po called them AqiiniSani or Water Insane. Their culture in these areas are nearly all dedicated to gathering water plants, animals and birds, while trapping game. Their trade is mostly shells and ceremonial swords that are given to the river after a successful battle. These are Barbarians.

Update? (10char)

The Great Cataclysm: Ripple Effects

The Kahnawake knew nothing of a great meteor, or of wars in a far-off land. What they did know was that their land was suddenly flooded with foreigners. For the Great Cataclysm sent wave upon wave of tribal migration, as Hoki fled Lokitlan, Kurrane pushed against We'avoku, Ts'ena encroached upon Havarrake, and so forth. Dubbed "Skwena", regardless of ethnicity -- a corruption of a Wendanawa word for "wanderer" -- these refugees poured into Kahnawake lands in a steady stream, looking for peace and prosperity.

What they found instead was a mixture of curiosity and disdain. How could these Skwena bear such fine metal tools and beaded adornments when they possessed no skills of their own? The Skwena were begrudgingly accepted into the Kahnawake homeland. At best, they were put to menial labor, forming a working class to replace the Wendanawa who were working their way up. At worst, they were put to slave labor as servants or on Kahnawake tobacco plantations.

Karranake, Mikmak's economic advisor, expressed concern over the increase in population, for the Skwena were forming communities of their own on the southeastern fringes of Kahnawake land and were demanding a share in the government food distribution system. Mightn't it be time to send envoys to see what was going on in the rest of the world? And possibly send a garrison or two to the southeast to keep the rabble in line? Besides which, exploration might be a good diversion to ease overpopulation problems.

Mikmak sent a trade expedition, slave-borne carts full of corn, furs, fish, tobacco, and fine garments off to investigate the land of the Skwena. Perhaps they could acquire the materials to make those fine metal objects themselves. But clearly the Skwena had run from a warlike people -- cautiously, a batallion of Mikmak's finest warriors was sent to accompany the caravan.

Any word on the update? (It's understandable it would be delayed, but no posting and this'll stay dead).

Religion of Non-Northern Dalran Cultures
The Dalran "pantheon" was a polythiestic one. The general assumption was that every culture (Wodakan, Sadion, Northern, Western, etc) had their own sprits. The Northern Spirit was seen as an anomaly, and usually villified (to rationalise their own control of the land).

The Southern idea of Spirits (as opposed to Gods) was a major influence. In the extreme versions, the "Spirit World" has as many spirits as the mortal world had humans, ruled by "Spirit Kings" who approximated Gods. The idea of prayer did not exist- the "Spirit Kings" set the rules, and shamans could listen to some of them. But only Spirits could actually talk back, even in praise.

I'm evil. This is not the update. :p

At the moment the update is at 3,100+ words, 16,000+ characters, and it still doesn't include the material after my last post nor infos on China. I get to work on it at most 1-2 hours a day (unlike last time, where I worked for several hours straight).

I'm going to stop promising deadlines at this rate, but I swear to God it will be up before Sunday night, when I can finalize things with a several-hours-straight work schedule (not Saturday since I'm going to a comedy show with friends and family).

I might backtrack and include the posts and PMs before this one, especially if you guys provide a summary and a summary of links on information on culture and religion of the peepz; not that I haven't read them all, it's just difficult indexing things all by myself. :)

Note the word work, and it is, but I also swear to God that it's fun work so far without any stats to worry about. ;)

The Rise of Marcism

History:

1- Origins:
Marcism as a religion originated with Desuro (1004-965 BC), a member of one of the tribes that encountered the migrating Wradyslaw. Desuro, as a "pacifist" (there were so many rationalisations around it to make it irrelevant) argued that his people should submit to Wradyslaw displacement. They refused, fought, and were destroyed.

Desuro had warned the Wradyslaw of the coming army, and had earned an audience with a major Wradyslaw chief. He managed to impress him with his ideas, ensuring the rise of Marcism continued.

2- Status over Time:
Savolaks disliked Marcism, but by the time he began uniting the tribes it was a significant force. Needing a political ally, he decided to sponsor it and grant formal permission for Marcists not to engage in worship.

Through Savolak's war of conquests, a minority of commanders were Marcists- but there were about twice as large a percentage of commanders as they were a percentage of people in the South Wradyslaw. They were generally accepted, but a feeling remained of alienation.

After the wars, Marcists held to a doctrine of Slow Progress. They would do their utmost to get Kings on side, but they were to be considered unreliable. They would attempt to plant "roots" amongst the local populace, in order to be able to endure in Dalran despite any setbacks that may come their way.

Tenets:
-Marcism is a monistic religion, arguing that Unity is the highest goal of humanity. Disciplined armies, friends, comrades- all of them approach but do not achieve Unity. It's ultimate achievement comes through Enlightenment, as all those Enlightened are born as one person (Marco, an elder with a reputation for great wisdom, was claimed to be such).

-Marcism, while notionally pacifist, in practice has a rationalisation around it for almost any situation.

-Most conventional Gods are claimed to be lies, but acceptable ones for control of those born into ignorance to control them while persuing Enlightenment for as many as possible.

-Death is said to be final, and each one to reduce the ultimate glory of Unity. This is the reason for the notional pacifism.

The Collapse of the South Wradyslaw Empire

i- Introduction:
On Sakana's dying day, he knew he had achieved a lot. The three great empires- Danion, the Viceroyalty, and Ysora, were all humbled. Two were conquered, and one barely held on to it's own capital.

He had hoped to complete the task he had set out to achieve, but it looked like that would be impossible. Westerners had fled southward, and would no doubt attempt to reclaim their homeland some day. Conquering Ysora was still possible, but it was going to be harder now.

On his deathbed, the main factor on everybody's mind was the sucession. Only Sakana and one other, Jonmai, knew the matter was already sealed. Jonmai had sworn to Sakana to carry out his will exactly as he desired- his war plans with Ysora, the obliteration of the Danionites, and war with Marcism.

It was hoped that Jonmai could continue the legacy of his predecessor, and create a Wradyslaw Empire covering all of Dalran. But he was weak- a natural follower, not a leader. His rivals accepted Sakana's decision, but all of them wanted the sucession. Worse, the Kings of Ysora and Danion saw this as a chance to invade the Empire. This would be a challenge.

2- Jonmai's Brief Reign:
The first order of buisness was to continue the campaign against Ysora. Some sort of strategy to take the capital would be necessary- and if the resolution was not quick, a significant detachment would have to head to the Danion frontier (Sakana predicted a likely invasion attempt).

The strategic situation was poor. The Ysorans had naval supremacy, and supplies from their colonies. Their army was equal in size, and due to the Danionites would soon outnumber them. Worse, too many casualties would destabilise the Empire- there were only so many Wradylsawans.

Sakana's plan was to march along the coast, besieging Ysoran colonies one by one. But this was clearly flawed- the Ysoran navy controlled the seas, and could reinforce the colonies with food. Jonmai, trusting in Sakana's war plans, refused to accept amendment.

The Ysoran counter-strategy was to attempt to cut off the Wradyslaw from the conquered territories in Former Danion and the Former Viceroyalty. Marching northward, they...

Kahnawake: Maritime Improvements and Expansion

As I wait for the update, I'll leave it to flyingchicken to let me know what is found by the Skwena trade expeditions to the southwest.

As the Kahanwake trade empire expands its reach, Kahnawake fishermen bring in hauls for profit as well as subsistence. Simcoane becomes a great port city, and the Kahnawake improve their maritime technology. The traditional Kahnawake fishing canoes get bigger and bigger over the years, until finally evolving into multi-plank boats with working sails. As the fishing off of Gannetauwe -- Newfoundland's Grand Banks -- becomes less and less lucrative, fishermen look to the south.

Some conflict arises with the Tionoti over fishing rights to Pocuohnkkun -- Cape Cod and the nearby islands of Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands -- but the Kahnawake keep to deeper waters, and the Tionoti port of Pocuonte (Boston) develops as a place for Kahnwake fishing vessels to repair their boats and trade. Kahnwake fishermen explore the coastline as far south as Cuba, establishing a series of small ports along the way.

[OOC: I'll post more detail about the fishing ports and the tribes who live nearby later, if I have time before the update.]

Doslzhiism and the Ualug pantheon

The Doslzhiism religion claimed the Ualug gods were dead and replaced with the Doslzhii pantheon:
Arost, the god of freedom;
Firum, the god of war;
Ealla, the goddess of fairness;
Watus, the god of change;
Neasa, the goddess of death;
Pomra, the goddess of life;
Dosl, the chief god and the god of balance.

Each member of the pantheon had a direction. Dosl's was inward. The god of the outward direction was unknown and was supposed to eventually betray the other gods.
