Taungoo the Haven Kingdom

In the north the Shan waged yearly attacks against the Ava, with much ground being gained in the recent decade. Ming expeditions to the area failed to put down the insubordinate peoples and trade relations to the region have slowly crumbled. The history of Burma was violent and over the past few decades increasingly turbulent.

The current king of Taungoo, of the Toungoo dynasty, Mingyinyo had taken the throne from his uncle after committing regicide in 847 [1486] and had since been slowly building his kingdom into a mighty realm, challenging even its own masters of the Ava dynasty. After years of obedient rule Mingyinyo had finally built himself into a strong enough kingdom with enough manpower to show his might. A few important skirmishes with Pegu and other smaller villages in the area had gathered him a quite nice military resume.

This capability was finally being heard of by villagers in the southernmost areas of Ava, many of which later switched allegiance to Taungoo following news of further incursions in the north by the barbaric Shan. Over the course of his reign up until this point, Mingyinyo had slowly been increasing his capitals population through means of buying up merchants with offers of greater trade and the slow trickle of migrants from the north. The additions of all these new people had slowly made him into one of the richest monarchs in the region.

With the death of the last king of Ava there was some issues with the new king and his distrust of the court around him. His actions led to them fleeing to Taungoo, giving a much needed boost in nobles and bureaucratic know how. Some events that followed in the later months of 863 [1502] led to a large amount of mistrust between the rulers of Ava and Taungoo.

With Ava seen as a sinking ship by even it’s own people, it could be time for Taungoo to take over as the dominate kingdom of northern Burma.

OOC: Man that was too short.

The spring brought with it new life to the landscape around the river Irrawaddy, and rains brought a rise in water and the slow deterioration of stable trade routes. Mingyinyo was appreciating the beauty of the landscape with members of his court. Devising new plans to spread his power and economic might. Citizens of Taungoo tended to their rice paddies, soldiers stood guard at the royal palace, nothing more than a large stone complex that shared double duty as a place of worship.

Carpenters crafted away at various hardwoods and were quite well known in the region as masters of quality. Something Mingyinyo himself enjoyed very much was watching the carpenters do their work, and gifting them with his praise, one of the many reasons his people beloved him. Troubles were coming in the north and he knew it, it wouldn’t be long before the Ava kingdom fell to the barbaric onslaught, yet he kept his hopes high and the morale of people in good condition.

Of his entourage there were a few new faces for just this occasion. Mingyinyo had requested architects and planners to accompany him on his spring day walk. Discussions on the future of his kingdom were the focus of the day. He brought the group to a street of Taungoo, weathering away by water and down the hill it was covered in flood water, preventing crossings. The king pointed to the roads and waters and when Mingyinyo spoke, all listened and all were silent.

“My kingdom is in a state of emergency as you can see, our roads are failing and bridges of the past have collapsed or are in serious ill repair. I have gathered you men here today to let you see what I wish you to correct. Such problems must not remain visible to outsiders, I want this mighty kingdom to shine to all that view it. I order the finest quality of roads, covered in stones, to line the great capital of my domain. Bridges made of teak will cross the streams and rivers. I wish it to be completed by the beginning of the winter, I am willing to pay well for your successful completion of my plans.”

No one replied, they simply bowed and kept records of what and when, small boys followed the well to do builders, keeping all the writings and notes in bags along with other gear. They seemed famished, but no one cared. So they continued their observations, following the king and his guards around the city. Mingyinyo did not care about wakening through the dirt and mud, he was above such ridiculous fears, he had the theory that if a king mingled with his people, the people would better support him.

They arrived at a forest in the process of being clear cut for new expansion, men labored with axes held high, mighty swings would snap little trees with little issue. Elephants and water buffalo pulled logs in bunches towards other little work areas where they were cut into viable building materials. Some carpenters carved the oddly shaped or short logs into furniture pieces for the wealthy or decorative items to trade. Minhyinyo spoke about what they witnessed.

“These are my people, our people. Hard working and skilled in all professions and crafts. Just look at how mighty our tree cutters are, and the commanders of the animals that pull the logs from the mud and muk of the forest floor. All the way to the men who work on the final product. Just like a mighty army, well maintained and trained, Taungoo is above all else in the world in efficiency.”

They kept to their walk, heading back towards the palace complex of Mingyinyo and his servants. As the walked the streets lacked the severely poor, everyone did well enough to get their rice, no one starved. At the gates of the palace they were greeted by women servants, possibly doubling as sexual objects for the court and king. Mingyinyo turned to the builders, his guards and the nobles that were with him.

“This is where you stop and where we separate. Go begin your planning of what I desire and you will be rewarded handsomely. When your plans and required prices are confirmed come back and talk to my court and I, we will gladly see to it that you get what is needed. This kingdom is yours to live in and it is mine to rule, keep your hard work up and you and I both will prosper and become the greatest.”

So they separated and into the palace gates the king went. As he returned and was serenaded by the beautiful women around him and a feast prepared in his absence was in his dinning hall, he received more information about the Shan in the north. Disgruntled he did not see this as a problem as much as an opportunity. So with haste he begin preparing diplomatic letters for the people in the villages around his border, offering protection and prosperity. This was the beginning of his greatness and all those around him could feel it in the air.

Why They Run

They came at night, cutting through men, women and children without remorse and with furious swiftness. Aggravators of the peace. This men came to take what did not belong to them, the lush farmlands and rich trade centers in Ava. It was early spring, a family from the northern limits of Ava rule had been traveling all winter. Just mere steps ahead of the Shan barbarians and perhaps within moments of death at all times. They were Bamar the cultural enemy to the Shan, and they knew they had to flee without hesitation.

South is where all of these refugees were heading, some to Pegu, but most to Taungoo. A sanctuary by the river, protected and far from the threat of being hunted down by evil warriors in the night. As they traveled south they passed through the capital city of Ava. Rumors of a distrusting king, the end of the military’s ability to fight the hordes and many other horrible tales. Some were good though, and in the darkness and gloom of everyone’s fears there was hope. A place not much farther to the south where families could settle and be safe, a kingdom ruled by a godly figure whose courage and knowledge go unmatched.

Back in the north the Shan progressed with intense speed, slowly over powering the armies of Ava. Crushing them with ease as the chain of command collapsed. Villages had fell to them and many fields lay unplanted and many homes sit empty. After a severely heavy rain a one of the expeditions sent by the king of Ava met in rice paddies a swarm of Shan marauders. Confused, surprised and immobile in the mud they dropped like flies to the dirty Shan. Unstoppable was attributed to them by the generals in their reports to the king. While in Taungoo, Mingyinyo laughed at his former masters incompetence.

And those families still ran, leaving the northern parts of Ava in an ghostly shell of its former appearance. As they came to the south the spread of myths of the Shan only frightened the locals more. Upset and on the verge of panic many of them simply picked up shop and moved on southwards. Pegu had been unwilling to accommodate for these new migrants, but Taungoo had long prepared for it.

New roads, bridges, markets and freshly cleared plots for farming were abound. The new migrants were welcomed with open arms by the locals. Mingyinyo watched his kingdom transform into a densely populated city, slowly emerging as the cultural center for Bamar peoples in Burma.

The king of Ava watched as his kingdom washed out from under him like a river bank during the wet season. His people leaving him, unsure of his capability to lead them out of this crisis. Mingyinyo waited with a caring heart, or so it appeared to the people. Ava threatened war, but they couldn’t act on it. At this rate war from both north and south would annihilate them.

When they reach the edges of the great city of Taungoo they first notice the lush fields, orchards and lumber piles. Constructions everywhere, a guard at every building, watcher on every road. In the city they find the stone palace and Buddhist temple complex and with any luck see the king himself. Merchants sell goods from all around, jewels and spices, breads and wines. Life was to good to be true, if only everyone knew of this place.

Taungoo the city of the kind, powerful and faithful.

OOC: WTH YOU STOLE MY IDEA!

To the Ottoman Empire
From the Commonwealth of Lithuania-Novgorod

Greetings, the merchants of the Commonwealth have petitioned us to request that you allow them access to other ports of the Black Sea trade. Our merchants have much interest in trade in this region and wish to be allowed to trade their goods through the ports of Azov, and others in the Crimea. Likewise the Commonwealth would be pleased to allow Ottoman merchants to its ports and cities.

Is this acceptable to the great Sultan?

Our Baltic merchants long to dock in your ports and ply their goods in your markets, no doubt your traders too wish to sell their wares in our fine port of Riga. Perhaps we can agree to mutual access to our ports?

To Changati Khanate

We have heard that your great empire has access to the riches of the Orient. The Commonwealth's merchants and citizens do sorely desire for these exotic goods to filter into their markets from the port of Asthrankh we would be willing to allow your traders access into this port if you allow ours into your markets.

We accept access to our ports. Increased trade between our nations will be beneficial.

We can certainly endorse the notion of peace. Nations prosper only in peace. We will always act in such a way to maintain the peace. As far as conflict is reduced, we support an agreement between our peoples.

That was not a threat. Unless, of course, your empire is harboring pirates rather than merely failing to contain them. But we would not believe such of so ancient and noble a people as Majapahit.

we thank you for accepting out proposal

The Flag of Italy

The Italian Flag, sometimes called the Cross and Stars or Braducci's Banner, was adopted in 1493 by the confederation. It was designed by Marco Braducci, a Corsican artist who served in the Italian conquest of North Africa where it was used first as an unofficial regimental insignia, becoming popular with soldiers and statesmen alike.

The Cross represents Italy's devotion to the Papacy and the Holy Roman Catholic Church while the green stands for the people of Italy. The five stars in the right of the flag represent each of the cities states of the Republic, the fact that they are set in white represents the peace that exists between Italians.

Italia greets her distant friends! We wish to partake in the new trade boom that your leaders seem to be fostering in your lands. Will you permit Italian ships to dock in your harbours? In return, your merchants will find themselves welcome in the Mediterranean market.

OOC: Israel, if you could just name that story I did "The Navigator" I'd be much obliged. Thanks.

The Red stands for the blood taken for independence. White stands for peace between us and China and a peace that will be honored. Green stands for the lush jungles and hills of Vietnam. The sword represents the Le dynasty and its commitment to protect the people. The Green Circle represents the faith of Vietnam and that it is hoped to unify, not dissentigrate, the nation.

Ayutthaya is still open to an alliance among any Siamese or Indian nation.

Well, since everyone else is posting flags, here is the flag for ther Ryukyu Kingdom:

P.S. I have no clue what the colors stand for. I've found sources telling what the colors mean in a different Ryukyu flag, but not for this one. :(

Indeed your merchants are most welcome in our ports, and no doubt our merchants would be pleased to trade in the Mediterranean.

When are orders due? I might miss this one as I attempt to figure out what exactly I am going to do with Wales. I need a grand plan before sending orders. Not just invade England and leave. :p

I might get them in tonight, if I am lucky, as my truck's brakes are out and needs to be repaired before I can work. So that will give me time to work out a plan.
