Backwards Logic
Emperor Palpatine
Morning, Day 4
The men woke up and began the usual routine of waiting for the cook to finish playing with his rifle and instead make some grub. Joining the line at the makeshift food tent was D'Artagnan59, who was untied that morning and Methos, who during the night had the fortune to be healed. After chowing down some bacon and eggs, Methos and few other squad mates thought it a good idea to go over and check on Bigfoot to see how his recovery was going.
What they found shocked everyone. Bigfoot was lying face up in the bloodied cot, a pair of bullet holes in his previously shredded legs and one in the temple for good measure. It was all too obvious that he hadn’t made it through the night.
As a few prepared a grave for their fallen comrade, some others searched through his belongings for anything of importance. Finding the crucial Map, a new man was going to be needed to safeguard this vital piece of information. Without it, the squad was lost.
Speaking of the map, before his untimely demise Bigfoot had found three possible routes to the extraction point, all with their merits and demerits. Outlined in three separate colors with notes along side, Nico thought it best to let the squad determine the route they would take tomorrow. Clearing his throat, he addressed the men.
“After today’s march has ended we’ll be at a point where we can take one of three different routes to get to the extraction point.”
“Option 1 is the quickest route to the rendezvous. It also happens to be the most dangerous by cutting through insurgent territory. It will shave a day off our time to get to the extraction zone, but another ambush along the way is all but guaranteed.”
“Option 2 takes us through a valley to the extraction. While taking this route does not add or subtract any time, there’s a chance that insurgents can hide in the hills surrounding us and ambush us along the way. There’s no guarantee we’ll be attacked, but no guarantee we’ll be safe either.”
“Option 3 is the longest route, but also the safest. By going this way, we’ll be far enough away from insurgent centers of activity and will most likely not be attacked by them. However, because this takes us fairly off course it will add a day to our travel time.”
“So during today’s march we shall vote on what route we would like to take so by the time we get to the ‘fork in the road’ we’ll know what leg to take. Keep in mind that we have roughly eight days left until we reach the extraction point as it is. Gather your gear, let’s get moving.”
The men returned to their tents to dismantle them as thoughts poured through their heads. Now more than ever, the decisions they made today would impact the whole squad for the remainder of the trip. This was not a responsibility to be taken lightly.
“Oh yea,” Nico added. “Another vote on the Wire Cutters today. Let’s see if we can find them a new home before sundown, okay?”
