King of the World #8: Shaka

Edit: having to draft and slave from your culture cities would be a real setback. Maybe the mali capital can become a drafting center for a while, with 100% culture happy should be less of a problem...?

You don't want to draft at all, you'd have to give up the +100% culture and +2 commerce/town from Free Speech which is way too valuable for a culture win. Slavery maybe, though Caste System is generally better.

I guess that's why a cult newb like me should just shut up and watch the fireworks :-)

uMgungundlovu?

When Zulu culture spreads throughout the world, you will be able to not only spell it, but pronounce it three times fast!

The first time I played the zulu was actually on this map. When I saw that city I thought, that can't be right, the mod must have messed up some city names.

I think we're now officially set up for the stretch run.

I started the round by getting what gold I could from the dupes on the Diplomacy screen:

Civ4ScreenShot0000-37.jpg

Here's hoping old Sury can leave his heathen ways behind and become a productive member of the international community. I somehow doubt it, but I did my part for world peace and harmony.

I also rebuilt my resource trade network:

Civ4ScreenShot0008-37.jpg

I'm also trading Gems to Willem for Pigs. I think this setup, overall, gets me more bang for my buck.

And with that, I was ready to begin the round. I dithered between 100% Culture and less throughout the round, and finally settled on running it like I would the Science slider in a Cottage Economy: With as small a surplus or deficit as I could in terms of straight cash. I figure I'll pump it to full once all of the Cathedrals are in play.

The good people of Thebes granted me a Great Artist. He was quickly sent to Memphis to settle and help them play catch-up.

Civ4ScreenShot0017-31.jpg

In terms of the great war against Charlemagne and Stalin, the Holy Roman Empire lost their second city and quickly buckled, joining the evil Chinese empire. Stalin, meanwhile, held out. He even demanded tribute in order to call off hostilities with me.

Thankfully, our good buddy Saladin put a quick end to that particular brand of nonsense:

Civ4ScreenShot0019-25.jpg

Was it necessary? No. But it was a nice gesture.

In 1405, our greatness was recognized by the world community:

Civ4ScreenShot0020-27.jpg

We would have topped out Culture, too. But probably not any of the other lists. Well, land is power, after all...

After the pope demanded that I go home and read a book, I was on the sidelines watching as the war continued to unfold between the world and Stalin. Needless to say, the world was winning:

Civ4ScreenShot0021-20.jpg

Uncle Joe ended up the vassal of Suleiman, of all people. Ah, well. Maybe that'll help to keep the Chinese in check. At least a little bit.

In 1445, Mark Twain was born in Thebes. He, too, went off to Memphis to settle down and write books about Tom uMgungundlovu and Huckleberry Finn:

Civ4ScreenShot0022-22.jpg

See? I told you that Thebes could function as a nice little GP Farm, even with all those cottages!

It was on Saladin's next Apostolic initiative that I made a major diplomatic misstep:

Civ4ScreenShot0023-21.jpg

I figured that nobody really liked Germany, and that by making Otto at least semi-strong, he would serve to keep some other European powers in check. Indeed, the measure passed, and Berlin was once again a German city. What I hadn't counted on was Willem seeing my ballot and holding a grudge. It took nearly a century to get him back to Pleased. I guess I should have figured that there would be diplomatic consequences to that sort of thing. Ah, well. Live and learn.

I founded a semi-useless city in south-central Africa:

Civ4ScreenShot0024-22.jpg

My chances of getting Islam are slim, but slim is better than none. You can also see that the mid-second-millennium Americas blowup is right on schedule. I'll keep you posted.

In 1480, a beautiful lady popped up in the middle of the desert:

Civ4ScreenShot0025-17.jpg

Yay! Needless to say, my Culture cities got Artists. Everyone else got Scientists.

Of course, it wasn't all good news out of Memphis:

Civ4ScreenShot0026-19.jpg

Freakin' random events. At least Mark Twain survived.

Once Replacable Parts was finally online (My science situation is getting better now that I've got Farms popping up and a good number of Scientists running throughout the empire), I made another quick flurry of trades:

Civ4ScreenShot0027-19.jpg

And I started heading toward Rifling.

We earned one more Great Artist in this round. I think he'll be the last one to settle:

Civ4ScreenShot0030-11.jpg

From here on out, they're pure Culture Bombs. As you can see, Minoan might just get eaten by Zulu culture. Again, we don't need Islam. But it would be awfully nice.

Utica is also considering the Zulu lifestyle:

Civ4ScreenShot0031-14.jpg

If Utica revolts, should we take it? Or burn it?

In 1545, I sent some intrepid, unarmed colonists to South America:

Civ4ScreenShot0032-14.jpg

Trusting in the protection of the Great Wall, they sneered at the Barbarians and the Workers set out to tame the landscape.

The Barbarians were not impressed:

Civ4ScreenShot0033-12.jpg

Should've called that city Roanoke. Okay, so what went wrong there? Was it that the Great Wall only works on its native continent? Or were the Barbarians exempt from the Wall since I built my borders around them? Not that it's a huge deal. I got 60 Gold out of it, and the Workers managed to flag down the ship and make an escape back to Africa. Just more a matter of curiosity.

Speaking of Africa, I made a swap with our good buddies, the Koreans:

Civ4ScreenShot0034-9.jpg

And I upgraded a good chunk of our Thebes garrison:

Civ4ScreenShot0035-8.jpg

Given the Suez bottleneck, I think we're once again safe from incursion. Though our treasury took a hefty hit.

It was there that I decided to call the round.

Here's a look at our hemisphere:

Civ4ScreenShot0036-9.jpg

And the Americas:

Civ4ScreenShot0037-5.jpg

Australia seems more crowded than it usually is. I guess even crappy land is at a premium with this many Civs on the map.

The Domestic Advisor:

Civ4ScreenShot0038-9.jpg

Memphis is 100 turns from achieving Legendary status, and each of the Culture cities is working on its third Cathedral. So I'd estimate we probably have about 75 or so turns left. Not bad.

If you look at the Tech situation:

Civ4ScreenShot0039-6.jpg

You'll see that we're slowly but surely clawing our way back into it. Nobody has more than three techs on us. I think next round is going to start with another technological fire sale, though, to refloat the economy. Once we get those final Cathedrals in place, I'd like at least a couple turns' worth of 100% culture.

Why I'm including the Diplomacy web, I have no clue:

Civ4ScreenShot0043-5.jpg

It's... impressive, I'll give it that. But it's hard to get any useful information out of.

Here's a screenshot of the Power Graph:

Civ4ScreenShot0044-5.jpg

Our Rifling upgrades aren't represented on there. We're still a middle-of-the-road Civ, though. I don't think we have too much to worry about. Maybe we can sign a Defensive Pact with Korea, just to be sure.

And we'll wrap it up with a peek at the Victory Screen:

Civ4ScreenShot0045-5.jpg

I don't think we have to worry about anyone sneaking a victory out from under us in the next 75 turns. If they do, I'll be very impressed. So I think the win is ours. It's just a matter of pressing Enter a bunch of times. I think I'll wrap up with one final, long round and then we can move on. Assuming the unexpected doesn't happen, of course.

Thoughts?

Hilarious stupid colonists. Yes, you might want to do some recent next time, the great wall says on its info that it only keeps barbarians out on its own continent, just so you can do stuff like this on barbarian islands.

Although if it was your original continent, the barb would have been automatically pushed out when you settled.

So, other than my execrable attempt at overseas colonization, am I on the right track? Anything else I can do to speed things along?

I wonder how a fully useless city looks then... To me it's pretty much like your Bulawayo :p

Yay! Needless to say, my Culture cities got Artists. Everyone else got Scientists.
Better turn those scientists into merchants until you're able to afford 100% culture.

Keep up the great game and entertaining reports

Yep, you seem to be doing fine. Have three cathedrals in each city and hit end turn until you win. ;) If you manage to get Islam feel free to spread it around... more cathedrals will help speed things up and you won't really have much else to do.

Can you calculate your current rate (how long it'll take your cities to reach 75,000 legendary) and estimate what time you'll finish at? Should be well before any AI threatens with space.

Well, as things stand at the end of the round, the longest wait is Memphis, at 100 turns. But each of the cities still has a Cathedral pending, and things will no doubt be sped up by GA bombs, the potential of Islam or Confucianism, random events, and a possible Golden Age or two. I'd say we're probably looking at 70 turns or thereabouts.

@neal "So, other than my execrable attempt at overseas colonization, am I on the right track? Anything else I can do to speed things along?"

As I posted earlier, I think you should have run 100% gold until your cathedrals are up, and then 100% culture. You are 'wasting' culture now... I think you should switch to gold asap (and maybe do merchants instead of scientists in the/some other cities?) and swithc back after memphis has all its cathedrals...

other than that, I think you're doing fine! If all goes right, your only lost city will be a city lost to the barbs in 1500 AD :-)

Also you probably already know this, but save culture bombs for the very end, don't use them right away. That way you'll know for certain which city will need them to catch up to the rest. No penalty for waiting on the bomb as long as you want. (until 69001 culture of course)

Dang - looks like the Turks got Visigoth, and wouldn't you know it now has Christianity. Ah well, seems you're well along now with what you have - another religion would just be some nice icing.

Any thoughts on corporations? Anything you might be able to get to that does not involved Scientific Method?

So what IS going on over in the Americas? Strange, but it looks as though Lincoln is the vassal of Sitting Bull and that Monty is at war with everyone BUT Lincoln. Perhaps I just cannot see the red line in the screen shot?

All right, all right. Let's accompli this little fait.

I started out by calling a halt to my empire-wide library- and university-building programs and forcing my army of scientists to go back to school for MBAs. Running Merchants to support culture was a stunningly obvious strategy, and I'm an idiot for having missed it. Thanks to everyone who pointed it out. I also shilled old, useless technologies (here's lookin' at you, Divine Right!) to anyone who would give me a buck for'em and ran 100% cash in anticipation of the Cathedrals' completion. After all was said and done I cranked up the Culture slider and had about 7,000 gold with about 70 turns to victory. And, at about -100 per turn, I was well on my way.

I sought out the protection of a well-stocked military that was, more importantly, well-liked by the rest of the world:

Civ4ScreenShot0000-38.jpg

Wang was also willing to sign a Defensive Pact, but Mao was eying Korea hungrily, and I couldn't afford a war with China and its massive vassal network.

Indeed, when the People's Republic came calling, I bowed and scraped with the best of them:

Civ4ScreenShot0001-42.jpg

Humiliating? Yes. But the Zulu people would understand when the spear-and-shield banners flew from every flagpole.

I took out my frustrations with diplomacy on the good people of Utica:

Civ4ScreenShot0003-38.jpg

The populace cast out their Roman governor and offered the city to us. I sneered, butchered the lot of them, and salted the earth. If they would turn so callously on Caesar, what would stop them from doing the same to me? And besides, Rome is a powerful ally of ours. I needed to keep up appearances.

Shortly thereafter, sure enough, the world exploded in violence:

Civ4ScreenShot0004-39.jpg

Thankfully, Saladin (and therefore I) managed to stay out of the bloodshed. My international image suffered quite a bit as I turned down friends on both sides seeking military aid, but I had built up enough goodwill that all they did was grumble.

In 1645, my almost-useless city, Bulawayo, bore fruit:

Civ4ScreenShot0007-40.jpg

It was too little, too late, but spreading Confucianism as quickly as I could gave me something to do with my time. I never managed to put together a Cathedral, but I'm sure the handful of Temples and Monasteries I built were a small help.

Stalin came by, offering me a hilarious offer that I simply had to share:

Civ4ScreenShot0008-38.jpg

:D Just... just demand it. I would've given it to you. Offering me five gold is demeaning to the both of us. Whatever. Run along and play in your Siberian hell. I've got a game to win.

It was a bit late, but we did get the *Cha-Ching!* random event:

Civ4ScreenShot0011-34.jpg

Were victory not so near at hand, that would have been HUGE.

Pope Saladin I brought up another one of those fun little "City reassignment" ballots:

Civ4ScreenShot0012-29.jpg

But I had learned my lesson. I couldn't afford any hard feelings at this point. I sat the vote out.

In 1760, it was finally time to finish things:

Civ4ScreenShot0013-33.jpg

Two of the three cities were at 69,000, and Memphis was only a few thousand behind.

Artists! On your marks, get set.... Sing!

Civ4ScreenShot0014-31.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0015-27.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0016-31.jpg

It honestly shaved less than 10 turns off the win, but it was still an impressive finale. The booty-shaking was heard round the world.

I hit Enter one last time.

Civ4ScreenShot0018-30.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0019-26.jpg

That was more fun than I'd thought it would be. Cultural Victories are still a bit dull, though. Thanks to everyone for reading, and special thanks to those that shouted suggestions from the peanut gallery! This game would have been significantly more bumbling without you!

YAY! First KotW culture victory! With Shaka:lol:

So what are we doing next? From looking at this game, I'd like to see a Sitting Bull/Pacal turtle space race victory, but that's just me. Vikings got second place in the poll, are we doing that?

haha that was awesome... fun to see the Zulu drums beat culture and not war!

A thought for the next one, stolen from Brucha's thread in the Civ3 section that sounds like fun...

See if you can't take Stalin, spread your borders to Warsaw Pact specs, and finish with a space race victory in the name of Yuri Gagarin!

Nice to see a KOTW won by culture. Congratulations on yet another win!

Perhaps Russia for the next civ? Considering how much of a non-factor Stalin was, it would be nice to see an example of how to play them :D

I think there were only two huge surprises in this game - India being killed early and Russia being a non-factor. Most of the time he dominates completely, so I don't know what happened. Anyway, Russia usually knows how to play Russia.
