Divine Intervention V: Montezuma's Madness

I say ASAP. I'm not changing anything this turn (I think all my quests are done with except the prophet of Nihil. I'll have something concerning him by tomorrow I think)

The world turned whilst gods and men plotted away, to bend the world to their will. The God of Luck was no different.

His word had spread, yet he spread it further.

His home city of this world had grown, yet a call of pilgrimage grew it further, large towns of believers springing up across the countryside.

Seoul's defences had stood tall, now they towered above the city, standing a proud guard.

And the men who stood firm on those walls, who had before numbered many, now thronged the parapets.

Seoul would stand strong. Montezuma would not find the Koreans easy pickings, the God of Luck hoped the other nations would fair as well, yet he feared for the worst. "Nihil's machinations will be hard to stop, yet stop them I will", he whispered to the dark, "even if it costs me everything. Let the Game Commence"

----

A sheet of paper fluttered on the wall of Montezuma's bedchamber, pinned to the solid stone by a simple knife, the words weaving across the sheet. It read:

MONTEZUMA

CEASE AND DESIST ORDER

MONTEZUMA, LEADER OF THE AZTEC PEOPLES, YOU WILL CEASE TO FOLLOW THE ORDERS NIHIL, GOD OF DESTRUCTION, AND HENCEFORTH:

1. PURSUE NO MORE WARFARE WITH THE OTHER NATIONS OF THIS PLANET
2. FOLLOW THE GUIDANCE OF THE TREE
3. RECANT YOUR PREVIOUS ACTIONS AS AGAINST THE TRUE PATH OF THE WORLD

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE ORDERS WILL RESULT IN GRIEVOUS ACTION AGAINST THE AZTEC PEOPLES BEING TAKEN OF UNLIMITED SCOPE AND SCALE. A SIMILAR LETTER WILL FIND ITSELF TO NIHIL, DO NOT WORRY YOURSELF ABOUT THAT.

WORRY ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES

THE GOD OF LUCK

@ Arsonist (and Arsonist ONLY!)

Spoiler :
No,really.
Spoiler :
Really really.
Spoiler :
You weren't defending Wang Kon from the Aztecs. I know you didn't. ;)

Shaka is in WHEOOH again (surprise surprise, that idiot once again has rerouted his economy's funds straight into the military) and it's near certain Wang is once again the target.

And super longbowmen or not, someone has got to die over there and it's not Shaka. Unless you find that it's directly intervening against you and should not be done, Shaka's going to get his army to attack from me. I've been trying to set him up as a world power but so far he has failed to live up to my expectations.

If Wang is so much favoured by you he has to live, I'll just reroute his attention to Qin instead. A land bridge, Engineering and a few trebs and pikes should get the job done.

@Paulus (And ONLY Paulus)

Spoiler :
No, Really
Spoiler :
Really Really.
Spoiler :
Really Really Really Don't Peak
Spoiler :
What about making Wang Kong a vassal of Shaka, and some story about the Koreans seeking the protection of the Zulu armies. It'll aid the Zulu economy and science rates, keep the Koreans on the face of the planet and let you take out another nation now instead of later.

Acamapichtli strolled the southern shore of Whale Lake, just as he had done every morning since he was a child. Hoping to catch sight of one of the lake's leviathan inhabitants, he strained his aging eyes to look out across the water...

Something had changed.

A puzzled expression on his face, he scanned the lake's surface, trying to understand what was different. A moment later he stumbled backwards, falling down onto the soft sand with an awestruck look about him.

The great glacier had melted! All his life, Acamapichtli had known the western end of the lake as a place of ill-omen; an icy blight on his people. But now...

Gathering his composure, the elderly Aztec picked himself up and marched westward, to get a closer look at the newly defrosted waters. What he found was even more remarkable than the melting of the ice.

Beneath the lake's calm surface, he could clearly see trees growing. Everywhere he looked, wooden limbs rose up from the depths like pillars of brown-green smoke, their topmost branches nearly breaking out into the air above.

Acamapichtli stood, mouth hanging open in baffled wonderment, for some time. Indeed, it was only when a large crab nipped him on the toe that he recovered himself, and hurried off to spread the word of this incredible blessing.

----------------

"Your most glorious Majesty..." said the Tree Shaman with a flourish, "welcome to my humble abode."

Montezuma looked around the huge courtyard, noticing Johnathon's men training alongside those of the Shaman.

"I would love to give you a tour, my Lord, but I fear we have more pressing business..."

"I'm sure you've already heard of how Tree has bestowed his blessings on us once more. And I'm sure you will be equally glad to know that he has not punished us for setting aside our official religion."

"As ever, Tree is both merciful and humble. He asks not for our worship - though he would certainly reward it. All he asks of us is that we protect his forests from those who would bring them harm. And that, mighty one, is why I requested that you grace us with your presence here. Now that we have discovered the home of Tree himself, a great mission falls upon us..."

"Already, Zulu invaders have tried to defile Treeland. Thankfully, their initial efforts were thwarted, and their routes to the holy land made more treacherous. But, sooner or later, the heathen invaders will return in greater numbers, seeking to plunder the untouched wilderness for their own sordid ends."

"We Aztecs are Tree's chosen people, and we have a duty to come to his aid. It will take time, I know. But we must begin preparations for a military expedition to Treeland. Civilisation cannot be allowed to take root there!"

-------------------

What to do:
Spoiler :
Chopping rules apply, but exception will be made if the chops are used to build an ocean-going navy.

Your task, which will last for the rest of the game, is to seek and destroy any city or settling party on the Treeland continent. No cities may be settled there, and all captured cities must be razed.

I realise that this will become increasingly difficult as time goes on, so I'll make the rewards proportional to the effort you expend. You won't be punished for failure (ie. if there's a non-Aztec city on Treeland at the end of a turnset), though you'll lose Tree's assistance if you don't make enough of an effort. The presence of any Aztec city on the continent, however, will have serious consequences.

Edit: I should add that this only applies to Treeland itself; the smaller islands around it are fair game for settlement.
Changes:
Spoiler :
*Restored the sacred sites (no metals added, but there is now a rather lovely sacred-tree-lake-with-crabs).

*Gave Johnathon the Morale and Leadership promos.

*Gave Tree Shaman the Nav1 and Med3 promos.

Wake the Beast...

The forest.

Is that where I am?

Montezuma was not sure, he felt as though he had not moved in an eternity.

He opened his eyes and saw the trees of the Kingswood illuminated in the afternoon sunlight, a stray beech leaf floating gently down and landed on the Savage ruler of the Aztec's head.

"Johnathon!" The shout was no more then a hoarse whisper.

"My king! You are awake!" Johnathon was such a loyal soldier, even while Montezuma lay in a comma, he still kept watch.

"How long?"
"2 weeks my friend, what happened, when I returned from the forest fort I feared for your life, the Shaman has proclaimed the return of the sacred groves a miracle, people all over the realm are inspired, they are hailing it as a new era."

Civ4ScreenShot0049.jpg

What did happen? Montezuma had been listening to the Great Aztec Scientist Acatlotzin and how he was about to launch the realm into a golden age, when a bright flash of gold had blinded him, and he fell into darkness. His dreams were strange, dark clowns and warrior gods. Pulsating crystals and beautiful water spirits. And that light, the cursed light, Montezuma remembered now, it was a constant annoying golden orb in his dreams, continuously pestering him.

It feels like it is still buzzing around me, Montezuma thought as he sat up, the Kingswood sat South-east of the capitol, Johnathon must have figured that Montezuma's favorite place would have some good on him, maybe he is right, maybe the forests are the life blood of the Aztec people.

"Bring me up to speed Advisor"

"Political tensions have broken out into war in Europan (the Celtic/Japan/Spanish continent) Isabella is likely to lose the war. On the home front thousands of people have gathered around the capitol requesting funds to found new setelments in the wilderness, proclaiming the Tree wants them to protect all of Aztecian forests, including the ones not currently within our territory proper."

"I say we should let them, send the settlers out."

Civ4ScreenShot0050.jpg

The city of Teotihuacan (OOC: i hate aztec names) constructed the Great university of Sankore to help the scientific fevor that seems to have taken the realm with the return of the Tree.

*i thought i took a screenshot of a set of Gallys destroying the 3 Beast's barges, but it apparently didnt save or something, so enjoy a wall of text*

"Mazatil, what do you think that is out to see?" Huemac asked, for the past year the five Aztec soldiers had been traveling the south, only now they have been trying to get home. The recent militarization of the barbarian southern kingdoms have been most troublesome to their efforts.
"Whatever it is it cant be worse then what we faced when we passed by those old ruins of Buntu, not natural what happened there." Tayaun was always the one with the biggest mouth and the stupidest head.
"Its a fleet, Their Aztec barges, their bringing us home!" Zeia and Tecocol were off gathering firewood, and by the time they got back a small dingy had pulled to shore to greet the small troop.
"I can see we arrived just in time, you look like one sorry bunch of warriors." The captain of the Beast's Barge had brought his fleet down to escort the soldiers home. While packing they talked of 'sea' things. "Aye, the Pirates have been more aggressive of late, attacked London bay past year, raped and pillage strait to the docks, but them new caravels came just in time they did"
They boarded into the dingy and hurried back to the fleet, this close to Khoisan and the pirates were apt to be patrolling.
"Great Tree save us!" Tayaun's eyes were wide. Out in the bay dozens of galleys were ramming the Beast's to shreds.
The captain shouted a curse."Looks like were walkingm Mazatil always had a way with words.

Civ4ScreenShot0056.jpg

"For your great efforts in the south, I award you lands and incomes." Montezuma's day at court would start well.

The five dirty soldiers had at least tried to look their best, Wide grins had spread over their faces, no doubt thinking of wrenches, booze and lordships.

"The lands South West of Teotihuacan will serve nicely, don't you agree Johnathon?" The political maneuver was not lost on the General, these dangerous soldiers were given lands empty and worthless, and yet the smallfolk would call it a great gift from Montezuma the Glorious.

The soldiers slowly made their way out of the room while his next audience arrived to tell him of the ambush of Khoisan, "I told you he would cheat us!" That was Tayaun, his loud mouth could be heard from the entrance hall.

"It's no great loss" Montezuma told the Admiral after his story of the three god gifted ships end.

"My lord i care to disagree, that was the backbone of our Red Strait fleet, with out it the Pirates will be moving north and into Aztec waters!" The Admiral of the capitol's fleet was trying to contain his anger.

"How many ships do you need, you have caravels, and the docks on Teotihuacan are mass producing galleons as we speak, your waters Remember that?" That sent the Admiral over the edge, storming out of the room. He would get his ships, the first of Montezumas Glorious fleet was already well on its way, only a matter of time.

Civ4ScreenShot0054.jpg

The next on the day's agenda was a ambassador from Korea. "Oh Montezuma would you please help your long time friends the Koreans and help us strike down the vile Japanese, ever since their devassalation they have been quite a threat, taking a few Spanish city's in their war." Montezuma nodded and quickly signed the declaration of war, nobody likes the cold shoulder of Tokugawa, and his campaign in Spain was at an end, this was an easy way to make nice with the wealthy Koreans.

On the way back to Montezuma's audience room to meet the Queen of Spain, Johnathon voiced his thoughts, "who taught you politics?"

Montezuma was puzzled, he was always good at politics, but it seems like lately his strategies were working better, "Call it a gift from the gods."

The night ended in war.

Isabella her holy queen of Spain, protector of the realm and upholder of the gods. Montezuma thought she was lovely, too lovely...she wanted something.

She wanted war.

Civ4ScreenShot0053.jpg

A threat it was, she never moved them or sent a ship in that war, but it was hurtful, trade was rich between the two nations.

It was between the Zulu's and Aztec's too, before....

Civ4ScreenShot0057.jpg

The War of Three it was called, and it lasted through out the next few decades, through the discovery of liberalism and sailing around the world.

Civ4ScreenShot0061.jpg

Of the Hindu faith, every nation in the world believed in the gods, their actions were hard to ignore, Both Brennus and Isabella tried to sway the world to elect them as the representative, but it would never work.

Civ4ScreenShot0065.jpg

Montezuma heard reports from the Lizard's city, their secret Colosseum was built, and then they began to offer up gold to the Aztecs, their entire production went to it.

The fool, the idiotic fool. "He did what?"

"All of it my lord"

"all of it?"

"All of the midlands, from the Spanish holdings, to the border of the American peninsula, to South Celtia."

"Why would he resign himself to an island, and become a non-player in world politics?"

Civ4ScreenShot0063.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0062.jpg

"The overseer of the Midlands and Vassal to The Japanese was much more, agreeable to the Aztec economic needs, The natives of the midlands that had been under Japan's heel were still underneath it, but not for long, they were the Incans, and they would eventually surpass the Island of Japan.

Civ4ScreenShot0064.jpg

"War, this requires war, a holy WAR!" The shaman's letter had been quite clear, with out him in the capitol it was much more easier to get away with industry across the realm.
"One ship we shall send, to look"

Civ4ScreenShot0066.jpg

The captain of the Sea Tree was not sure what he was doing, for hundreds of years the Aztecan people relied upon the Forests for their defense and military, the long bowed archers of the forest, the forest chariots, and forest jaguars. And the sea was just trees in water. The Aztec people do not have the technology to wage a modern war.

"Raise sail, we are pulling close to the city, lets see whose banners ride there."

As the Sea Tree pulled into view of Treeland the air was tense with elder days. And blood.

"The Forest reclaimed what it owns. But we need to stay out here and patrol the shores, the forest shall not be defiled."

Civ4ScreenShot0058.jpg

When Montezuma first heard the reports of a Zuluan army in the Kingswood he laughed, a catapult and a spearman, pitiful things, Johnaton's Forest Guard quickly overran them. But when Montezuma had set foot into the Forest, it seemed like a attack against him self. Trees defiled, body's everywhere, and blood. Rage boiled in him and he ran off deeper into the forest.

Civ4ScreenShot0067.jpg

Johnathon ran, jumping over the fallen branches of the Kingswood he sprinted to the end of the peninsula Montezuma had to be there, his king was unprotected.

As the forest dwindled the Cliffs of the Wood loomed up, and Montezuma was there with his back to him. He was staring off into the sea, where a forest of sails and masts were stationed offshore. Johnathon had never seen them all before, the reports were impressive enough, 17 fleets.
"My lord, why did you build so many ships, we do not need this many for defense against barbarians or Zulu galleys?"

"I built them for.....war"

"But my king, Aztecia cannot wage warfare, we do not have metals for knights or soldiers, we only have the forest."

"Its a new kind of war, a War of Science, ships....and gunpowder......"
Montezuma slowly turned around, a Beech leaf floated gently by and he looked in Johnathon's eyes,"Its a Modern war"

The leader of the Aztec's eyes were burning orbs of gold.

"I am not at all pleased at your ignorance,
far too long have you tested my patience,
now you will feel your rightful punishment,
since you seem so dumbly hellbent!

I demand of you to take your fleet,
And bring the Spaniards to your feet,
they will kneel to the Aztec or die,
that is the words the world will know you by!"

Spoiler Tracnar :
Perpentach is very disappointed! You will be punished severely once CCRunner gets around to do my edit. Until then, here are my tasks for next round:

-Destroy or Vassalize Spain. If impossible, do not take peace.
-Chop down two sacred places and build Workshops/mines over them. If you do not do this task, whatever the False Shrines hold for you will be lost to you.
-Delete the Tree Shaman unit.

Spoiler CCRunner(edits) :
Spoiler Seriously, no looking others than CCRunner :
Raze Tzintzuntzen and place a Lake tile in it's place; place city ruins around it. When you have done this edit, please post this along with it:

Spoiler The Neverending Rain :
The clouds blocked out the sky as the citizens of Tzintzuntzen gathered in the village square. A mysterious jester was reciting poems of immense beauty, and many people stood amazed despite the heavy rain. After what must have been a couple of hours, the entire village was gathered there, enthralled by the poets words. They did not notice the water rising.

And when the water finally reached Perpentach's mouth, he kept on talking, under the water. The townspeople, now completely lost in the beauty of the mans voice, dived beneath the surface to listen. And stayed below the surface. About a quarter later, the last Aztec in the city had drowned. Perpentach slowly walked away as what had once been a beautiful town quickly became a lake. And when the lake had grown large, a rock fell from the skies and into the lake, and a huge wave rose, laying waste to anything nearby.

... Also, what do we do? Tracnar seems inclined to blindly follow the Tree still?

A bubble of grayness grew from a spot in Montezuma's bedchamber. He shouted, "You again!"

Lowkey snickered, "Yes, it is me... You have completed you quests..."

"You! What were they?"

"If I tell, you will stop: You braved the tide and you suffered a stab. But all will be forgiven... A general has tricked Izzabela: he is now solely for your cause. Also, your lands will give greater bounty."

"You must be asking for another Q"

"Yes! Attack the Shrine of Izabella, you will be rewarded: Also, stay true to the Tree forever and I will continue to give your gifts of my aspects..."

"Montezuma" spoke the voice from the darkness "Montezuma, it is not I. I am not who I was. You see, my powers have.... expanded due to the influence of a far greater power than you. Your powers can expand thus. Imagine... annihilating your enemies with a thought. All you could desire with the snap of your fingers. The man who is not a man waits to the north. Bring him to your capital. I wish to speak to him. Bring him in the next fifty years and your rewards shall be great. Power, riches, wisdom, and all the architecture of your chosen neighbor. Should you fail in this quest, all of Aztecia's greatest achievements will be forfeit. Similar rewards shall be given as soon as you cut off the worship of those who would leave you astray. Burn the heretics, cut out their legs from under them. The worshipers of this 'tree' must die"

What to do:
Spoiler :

Bring the prophet of Nihil to the capital and leave him there. Cut down All of the sacred tree sites and kill with the tree shaman. I don't mean kill him, I mean convert him to a soldier and attack with him. Bonus points if he dies while attacking. If you do all this, PM me the name of one of your neighbors and you will get all of their world wonders in random cities of yours. If you fail, all or most of the wonders you control will go to others.
