MilarNES: Birth of A Civilization

As war rages in North Europe and North America, more and more nations meet each other, with some of them starting on a good foot, others not so much. Cultural exchange is extending in Europe while trade is becoming more useful to improve the richness of the countries and more attempts are made by the governments, kings and emperors to provide better for the lives of the normal peoples they rule. Gaia still hopes that bloodshed would stop, as each violent death pains her as much as to the deceased, but so far hope isn't strong enough to stop the violent acts in land. Also, the scientific advances made by sages all over the world bring many more nations into the next technological age, and many wonder what the future will bring them.

Africa

The great work of the time in the nation of Brundagana has been finished! Reaching a height of 150 meters, 140 meters and 70 meters (Brunda, Adra and Future, respectively), they stand a few kilometers to the south of the capital of Brundagana, giving testimony of the hard work done by thousands of unskilled and skilled workers, as well as architects from the whole country. The construction of the last parts of the pyramids was eased and sped thanks to an invention called wheel that helped the workers to carry the heavy stones used in the building easily. Also, the Impi regiments kept marching towards their intended objectives, encountering several tribes, some of them friendly, others indifferent and a few of them hostile to the troops. Some of the latter were able to stop the advance of several groups of Impis in the south and the west, but the northern army has managed to reach points very far away from the capital, as the inhabitants of Adragana manage to expand their dominion of the strange island. (Pyramids wonder finished (+7 EC, +2 Culture), all other Pyramids scrapped, Wheel (+1 EC), expansion, +4% Tribal Gods)

The priests of Damietta are doing their best to lead their nation towards the greatness they perceive to have been conceded by their gods of the desert. In one of the border towns of the country, some people have discovered that certain stones can be used to produce fire faster than the traditional method of rubbing two wooden sticks one against the other. Also, the lessons learned in the recently cancelled construction of the monument to the gods have been applied to excavate better blocks of stone for buildings and the such. Also, a expedition was launched towards the north in an effort to expand the lands of Damietta: the first attempt was foiled because there was already a presence in there, but some other lands north from the island were unspoiled as of yet by human presence, so the settlers landed and started to build up a yet unnamed city in there. (Stone Mining, Fire (+3 EC), expansion, +3% Saharan Pantheon Gods)

The Guanche best hunters have recently designed a new weapon that can be used to attack objectives at longer distances than slings can, and also throw deadlier projectiles. While work keeps going on in the construction of the temple to the god Achamán in the Canary Islands, a new project is being developed in the mainland to provide more food to the people and improve the living standards as the barbarians in the south are subdued with small losses and a risky expedition is launched into the sea, reaching a small archipelago in which they settle easily, as none of the islands was inhabited. However, communications between the islands and the Guanche mainland will be difficult for a lot of time, until something faster and more reliable way of sea transport is created. (Lance-Propeller, expansion, Temple of Achamán worked on, Projecto Acequia started (gives +2 EC, 3/8), +3% Achamán Worship)

Asia

In the expanses of the Tigris and Euphrates valleys, as well as the settlements in the Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts, the Babylonian Empire has never felt as strong as before. Putting pieces of cloth on their ships propel them further than the oars alone can, and the first new ships have been built in the Mediterranean port of Kanjar. These dhows are being used to expand along the Mediterranean coast, creating settlements but not occupying it completely. Up in the northern lands, expeditions towards the east and the west, but the eastern expedition met with groups of savage barbarians that shoved the groups of settlers and warriors, stopping them from settling down in the shores of the Caspian Sea. And, in the Persian Gulf, the Oar-Ships are doing a lot of work, attempting to ferry as many people as possible to new settlements in the coast. (Sailing, expansion, +3% Babylonian Paganism)

The ancient power behind the Chrysanthemum Throne in the Empire of Japan, the Bowser family, has taken over the throne of the country! After the changes made by an Emperor who decided to get free of the influence of the Bowsers to take charge of Dai Nippon Teikoku, Bowser VI decided that it was time for him to take up the mantle of the Throne and launched an attack against the city of Edo which could do little to stop them, as all the soldiers were away. The Emperor was allowed to live, although he was forced to abdicate in favour of Bowser VI, who immediately started to make changes around. Dai Nippon Teikoku was immediately renamed to Koopa Kingdom, and the capital of Edo to Nyn-Nyn. Meanwhile, the plans of expansion are being put into action, with several soldiers conquering the southern half of Sakhalin Island and a jump into the mainland, as well as several pirate attacks that affect many people. (Sailing, expansion, +4% Playerism)

The peoples of the nation of Shanjuó have continued with the expansive plans the military government has laid out for them, but no further work has been brought from the leadership of the country, as they remain isolated and don't communicate with the mayors of the towns and such in order to give them directions and orders. (Expansion, EC banked, +2% Survivalism)

In the southern land of the Asian continent, the people of the nation of Singodia still work hard in order to make a place in the world. While the peoples in the north-western border were enticed to join the nation upon seeing the prosperity that the Singodians were enjoying, those in the south-western border rejected the Singodians' offers, which forced the army to attack them. The loss of several warriors was painful, but it certainly was worth as many lands were conquered and the barbarians receded. The introduction of ships that were used to attack the barbarians from the coast also played a role in both the war and the expansion of the country towards the east, and the starting of a great project to provide more foodstuffs to people and new methods to extract stone from mountains spell great economical improvements for Singodia. (Fishing, Stone Mining (+2 EC), expansion, -1 Warrior, Great Agricultural Works (+2 EC, cost 8 EC) started, +4% Fertility Cult)

Europe

As the war in the Anglian islands rages on, the peoples of the Gaulic Confederation do their best to improve their way of living and their influence in the world. Several people expand towards the south and the east, taking over many lands that were either hardly inhabited or non-inhabited at all. Several Teutons have joined the Confederation, attracted by their uprising culture and economy, bringing with them several animals they use to work in the farms and provide them with food. Also, a new colony has been created, further than the High Mountains in the south, with several new people joining in the new colony. (Animal Husbandry (+1 EC), expansion, +4% Ancestor and Personality Cult)

Meanwhile, the peoples of Idyll decide to reject the ways of metal to go forward in their lives. However, their rejections of metals as valid means of creating better tools do not cast them as backwards people, as they have managed to do many a good things with their time. For example, one of the sages, upon observing the movement of the Sun and the Moon, has realized that the two astronomical bodies always do the same movements every several days, and has applied this knowledge to create a calendar that will help people know when seeds must be planted for it to be efficient or when the farm animals must be sent to the slaughterhouse. Also, several people have started to investigate an efficient way to translate thoughts into paper, while settlers travel downriver and expand the borders of the nation of Idyll. (Calendar (+2 EC), Writing (8/10), enters Bronze Age, +2% Militarism)

Meanwhile, the rulers of the Kingdom of Hellenium are working very hard to ensure control of as much land as possible for their subjects and themselves. The introduction of a new weapon to the nation, as well as the start of an industry that will give many people a work position and the cities better constructing materials, speak much for their attempts, and they are using all of this economical output towards making a bigger army, which was launched towards the east. However, there was not many lands that were taken by these brave soldiers, but still enough was taken to satisfy them, specially on the north. This concentration of troops in the east has, unfortunately, given rise to several people in the north that have taken control of much land and have decided to push the Hellens back towards the south. (Stone Mining, Lance-Propeller (+1 EC), expansion, +3% Hellenic Polytheism, +1% Roman Paganism)

In the Kingdom of Rome, things are improving slowly, and the last problems of the first years have been finally shaken down, as new ways to get more food for the peoples are being implemented all along the kingdom. These newly-discovered sources of food, and the riches they have brought, are being applied to an increase in the size of the army, for some ignored reasons that are not known yet. Also, trade with the nations of Milan and Hellenium keeps going on, and with them come several peoples of those countries that are very keen in expanding the influence of their religion into the nation. (Agriculture, Animal Husbandry (+2 EC), +2% Roman Paganism, +1% Animism, +1% Hellenic Polytheism)

Not much is done in Pictland, save for the construction of several fortifications in the Heartlands to present a better front against the invader, and prays to the Celtic gods so that this war finishes soon. (+4% Celtic Polytheism, Northern Forts finished (gives better chances to the defenders in a battle, cost 2 EC))

Playing the cards the spirits have dealt to them as best as possible, the United Tribes of Milan keep expanding and doing their most to improve the way of life of their people. A settling expedition launched towards the south, across the Big Mountains, meets both with success, as a new settlement is created in there, and with several people that talk a language similar to theirs, yet different in many aspects, and that call themselves Iberians. Also, in the capital of Milan, after the Royal Tombs were destroyed in a strange earthquake that shook the whole city, the stones were scrapped and used to build new buildings in the city. It would be in one of these new buildings that a man called Legna brought up the idea to translate words into a flat rock so that they could be used as messages and ways to make accounting an easier thing. Also, attempts to start a trading relationship with the Gauls are started in secret, but they don't bring any riches as the Gauls don't seem interested in a business relationship with their southern neighbours. (Writing, Fishing (+3 EC), enters Bronze Age, +3% Animism, +1% Roman Paganism)

North America

In the eastern seaboard of North America, the young Britannian Republic continues their efforts towards the expansion of democracy to the whole world. Their best soldiers have managed to reach other sea at the north of the capital, having followed the Laurent River until its mouth, where a new colony has settled down, and their Longboats have taken several settlers towards the south, in search of new, warmer lands in which living can be easier than in the cold stretches of Pendragon. The buildings of this city are currently being improved, especially the Britannian Senate House, which is being reconstructed under the new principles of masonry; the ports of the cities of Ashin and Hanmat to better communicate those cities and provide them with more resources; and the Oracle of Mai, where people might be able to find answers to their questions. (Masonry (+2 EC, Bonus +25% Wonder), expansion, enters Bronze Age, Port's Mouth project started (+2 EC, cost 8 EC), Oracle wonder started (10/40), expansion, +4% Shara)

The Nootka, being patient people, have surely used that patience towards the best things they are able to do. Making the most of their new-found knowledge of sailing, they have armed several galleys and sent them towards the south and the north in attempts to expand their holdings as much as possible. In the north, the galleys and oar-ships were able to conquer several islands and secure new holdings in the name of the Confederation, meeting with several natives that offered help to survive in the cold plains, with some of them sharing the knowledge of a new weapon that allows people to kill animals at long distances. Also, the attempts to extract large blocks of rock from the floor have met with success, and this success has been expanded into a new project to build several channels that will connect the crop fields to water at longer distances. (Lance-Propeller, Stone Mining (+1 EC), expansion, Farm Channelling Lvl 1 (+1 EC, +1 Culture/turn, cost 5 EC) started, +2% Sun and Moon Worship)

War seems to be the only thing in the minds of the people of the nation of Seri as they attack their southern Mexican neighbours with all the strength they can. Separating their army in three groups, they have launched an invasion of the Mexican lands that, although it had some snags when several Serian soldiers died in an assault of the Mexican lines, all in all it was a resonating success as all enemies were wiped out and the remaining Mexicans agreed to join the Serian Empire. After the effort spent by the builders in the construction of the Monument to the Spirits, people have learnt the best ways to extract stone from quarries, thus improving the quality of buildings while the army asks for the construction of a new training ground in which soldiers will be able to learn new ways of fighting and battling with enemies. (Stone Mining (+1 EC), expansion, +1 Army Quality, -1 Warrior, Seri Proving Grounds Lvl 1 (+1 Army Quality, -1 Upkeep, cost 7 EC) started, +4% Spiritualism)

Oceania

The solitary lands and waters of the Indian Ocean are calm as no one disturbs its peacefulness. The Sarawak do not make much in the name of military actions save for defending their colony in Loidense from barbarian attacks. However, this doesn't mean they stay dreaming in their laurels, because they are doing their best to improve the way of life in the country. While the hunters of the island of Loimáetke managed to create a new weapon that could be used to hunt animals at longer distances than slings could, the priests of Sibu have managed to determine that the Sun and the Moon, representatives of the God-Emperor in the sky at day and night, visit the Earth with a rhythm that can be calculated easily: the Sun produces the same shadow always every 365 days, and the moon goes from full to dark to full again in more or less 28 days. This will surely help them to make up a new way to signal the holy days of the nation. (Calendar, Lance-Propeller (+2 EC), enters Bronze Age, expansion, +4% Worship of the God-Emperor)

South America

The people of the young Chibchan democracy in South America keep expanding their holdings as much as possible. And, indeed, they expand very fast through the jungles of the continent, as well as they expand the size of their army until they manage to get the biggest army of the whole planet. However, as they run towards the south and the east, they encounter groups of natives that have no interest in joining the Chibchan nation and have indeed proved their worth in defending themselves against the feared Eagle Warriors, using their poisoned darts against them and killing an entire group of Warriors before the Eagles retire. It is hoped that the new weapons, created by the best sages of the nation and made of a strange thing that is excavated from the ground like stone, but lighter and stronger than it, can make a good job in “convincing” those natives that joining the Chibchans is in their best interests. (Bronze Working (+2 EC, Bonus +1 Army Quality), expansion, ´-1 Warrior, +2% Aztec Gods)

The Inca Empire, trying to catch up with what the other nations are able to do (although not knowing of these other nations themselves), are investing a lot of time and money in it. Two new improvements have been brought to the light, as the sages of the nation have created a method of transport that makes it easier to explore and carry products from one side of the country to the other, the most courageous people have been able to domesticate several animals that can be taken care of and be ridden by those the animals trust. Meanwhile, a great temple dedicated to the further glory of the Sun is being built in the shores of Lake Titicaca, and it is hoped that, once it is finished, the Grand Temple of the Sun becomes the holiest site of the religion of Inti. (Animal Husbandry, Wheel (+2 EC), expansion, Grand Temple of the Sun (+1 culture/turn, +1% Inti/turn, cost 6 EC) started, +4% Inti)

SPECIAL INTEREST NEWS

The Gangelt War

The tide of the war in East Anglia seems to be turning against the natives of Pictland, as the Gauls start to take much land from the Picts' hands, as they retreat northwards in order to protect the heartland of their small nation.

While half of the army goes to the north and builds several fortifications near and around the ancient capital of Inverness, the rest of the soldiers try to defend central East Anglia from the attacks of the enemy, but after they unveiled their improved Kriehgeiter Bands (which now include soldiers of all kinds in order to be as flexible as possible), the Pict soldiers didn't stand much of a chance, although they made their defeat expensive as several Gauls died when attacking them. However, these valiant stand of the Picts in face of overwhelming numbers has inspired several Picts now under the rule of the Gauls to rebel and take their weapons against the invader. Also, the strategy used by the continentals to finally surround and defeat the Picts in central East Anglia nearly cost them the city of Edinburgh, as the retreating soldiers could have taken the capital back with minimal loss of life since it had been abandoned by the Gauls and left in care of a minimal-sized militia that would not have stood a chance against a trained and well-developed army. (Pictland: -1 Woad Warrior, -1 Atlatl, -1 Rider, -1 EC from occupation, +3 Blue Militia (Resistance); Gaulic Confederation: -1 Atlatl, -1 Kriehgeiter Band, +2% Ancestor and Personality Cult, +4% Celtic Polytheism)

Pirates of the Sea of China

Several pirates armed and supplied by the Koopa Kingdom have been attacking several points in the Sea of China, attacking specially coastal towns as they provide the best loot, even if it is not a lot. However, this action has brought them into the point of view of the Shanjuó nation, who has until now been unable to repel the attacks due to the lack of a navy that can navigate the waters and warn whenever these pirates come. (Koopa Kingdom: +2 Treasury)

In the Turkish coast...

Several civilizations met in the region of Asia Minor as they attempted to one-up each other by trying to settle in as many lands as possible. While the Babylonians use their oar ships to conquer the island of Cyprus and several coastal points, the Damiettans manage to take over a piece of land the Babylonians had not found yet and the Hellenians expand their holdings by connecting the two colonies in Western Asia Minor and follow the coast towards the north. (Babylonian Empire can now contact with Damietta and Kingdom of Hellenium)

Tribal Meeting

As several Nootka galleys passed near their ports, the Serian peoples couldn't give credit to what they were seeing: these ships used cloths to impulse themselves instead of using oars! As the people inside landed, some small problems in communication prevented them from reaching some kind of accord, but soon the Nootka left in their galleys towards the north, and after that the border guardians reported several newcomers that came in peace, wishing to talk with the leaders of the Seri nation. (Nootka and Seri may now contact and make agreements)

Greetings, our southern neighbours! We would like to know if you would be willing to start a trade agreement with us, as it would improve our economies a lot.

FINIS (for now)

@Everyone: I'd really like for you to send orders sooner, it's really a headache to sort so many orders at last hour. Also, some people don't realise that it's more economical to research something from the Bronze Age and a turn after research two Stone Age techs at half prize.

@Crezth: if only you had sent orders sooner... don't worry, I have decided to eliminate the 3-strike policy.

People, don't forget to have a look at the first page, there have been a few changes with the wonders. For example, now all wonders need one tech in order to be built.

The next update's deadline will be next Wednesday 25th March at 7 PM GMT+1 (1 PM EST). Please, try to be on time, it's rather sad to see that many people wait till the last minute to send orders.

I'll update the stats tomorrow. I didn't put the Culture points in the update because I realised it was rather tiring to make the count and write it. Don't worry, they will be in the stats.

Hope that you liked it (and that you laughed at the title of this update).

Capital update, sir.

To Milan
From the Gaulic Confederation

We realized and welcome your traders, but our path network is lacking: Even the Kings don't see all of their domain and his Darali lead with a padded glove. However, this will soon change. We Promise.

The stats of all the nations have been updated. You might notice that there are a couple of things missing from the stat template from before, it's because it occupies space and isn't needed yet. Once we arrive to the pertinent techs, the stats will be extended.

EDIT: great update again! very good quality and excellent ponctuality.

From Babylon
To Damietta

It seems you have decided to focus your expansion efforts on the eastern mediterranean, a sphere of influence we consider Babylonian territory. We are only to happy to share our trade routes and ports with fellow peaceful traders but frown upon their use for military purposes.

We would like to sign these agreements with you:
1) You shall refrain from settling any further lands in Turkey or the eastern mediterranean. You shall cease populating any further lands in the middle east.
2) We shall agree not to try to occupy any parts of the eastern african coast (which we could do quite easily with our new Dhows) and officially recognize your current gains in the middle east, Turkey (but no more in either theatre) as well as all of Africa as yours.
3) We shall sign a non-aggression pact
4) We shall begin trade between your lands.
5) We shall begin the process of importing your religion to our people as we are not a religious people and you are (theocracy-driven) and thus we are willing to accept your religion into our lands so as to to help us better understand our south-western neigbours.

To the Kingdom of Hellenium

Greetings to the strong and mighty king of the Helens. Your reach extends far and wide and we are glad to see your people strong and healthy.

1) We do, however, wonder at your expansion plans for the Black Sea. We would ask that you allow us to develop the rest of the Asian continent while you develop the remainder of the European continent. Please draw your forces back northwards so as to better repel your northern barbarians and we will ensure we do not settle any lands near your nothern borders. (so asia babylon, europe helens)
2) would you sign a non-agression pact with us?
3) Would you trade with us?

Would you trade with us?

To: The Helens, Damiettia, Rome, and Milan:

We propose the organization of a formal mediterranean trade alliance.

We would propose that organization of much more formal and organized trade amongst our people. We would like for all of our nations to invest in the infrastructure of trade with an emphasis with trade along the mediterranean. These harbours, trade-houses, caravenserai would represent an investment in our futures.

OOC: I want us all to invest a few EC (whatever milarqui deems appropriate) so that we can each get 1 more trade route with each of the other members of the mediterranean trade alliance. This would help our treasuries quite a bit during peace time but would produce reduced results if war comes to the mediterranean. EDIT: Milarqui: How much would it cost each of our members?

Immac.

You can only get 1 trade route with each nation. However, if you wish to do it, you can do a trade alliance that could speed up the process of raising how much money you would get from trade. Let's see what the others think and I'll tell you my opinion.

Also, I need people's opinion on Arian's suggestion of tech-research speeding through trade.

EDIT: To everyone: Please, try to follow the order template on the first page and when you write your orders don't write several pages worth of orders. Give them concise and straight to the point (this one is specially directed at Immaculate and Charles, because they tend to write very large orders that make me dizzy). Just say "this guy to this place". If you want to provide reasons for your moves, make it short. And, Immac, there is no need to make the orders in two parts as you have been doing lately, you can provide the whole orders in one shot (no need of giving the guys orders for the first 25 years and then the other 25 years, just give them for the whole 50 years).

What about just +1 value to each trade route (increases max by 1)

Also, I need people's opinion on Arian's suggestion of tech-research speeding through trade.

I don't feel qualified to offer an intelligent opinion game-wise but role-play wise i guess it makes a little sense. I don't think it should be moer then 1Ep towards the tech in any single turn (so it should be minor)... but thats just an uninformed opinion.

Here's a suggestion for the 'Friendly Tech Exchange'

1. Two civs must have (friendly) contact with eachother.
2. A civ can gain ONE tech point per turn in a random tech of its current age (or an earlier age) from the other civ. That civ must ofcourse have researched this tech.
3. ONE tech point per contact for a civ. I.e. if you made contact with 4 civs you can gain 4 tech points at max per turn, distributed over your unresearched techs.
4. You can not gain tech points from more primitive civs than yourself :p

Story soon aboutthe various holidays. I need to find names for the months first.

I do appreciate your idea, Arian, but putting that into motion is alot more than a moderator should have to deal with. This NES already has leaps and bounds worth of depth already. I believe technologies should have the option to be traded, but other than that, I don't really see a need to kill the moderator with 1 tech point per civilization that my country has contact with. While I do see a case for it, with cultural diffusion, I do not believe this case makes up for the vast amount of work that it would take to keep this process alive.

Think about it, you're done with adjudicating that country's orders... Then you have to make sure the wonders do their thing, make sure that growth points, if there are any, are adjudicated, and then look up each and every country that country has contact with, make a list of technologies that those countries have vs. the country in question, and then assign a number on some system for each tech, roll a die, add a point to the country in question's technology that won the roll, then repeat the process for every country that the country in question has contact with.

Eff that. What happens when we're in the industrial age and all countries have contact with one another? It may not be that big a deal at the moment with country A having contact only with country B, or maybe even C. Later on, however, the process would kill the NES.

If we MUST have some sort of cultural diffusion, or technology swapping (And I agree that we do), it should only happen durring war-time (And perhaps not have a system, but leave it up to moderator arbitration), and if countries agree to give/trade technologies as a part of a trade agreement. This keeps the NES from becoming a complete chore to update.

Oh, and another thing, my EC should be at 14.

We will not sign unless you change the first point, as we are an Eastern Mediterranean nation and will not be told where to settle. Though with Middle East all we are interested in is the Red Sea.

All the mistakes have been corrected, including one with Pictland's stats that I hadn't seen before.

As for the spin Amon puts to Arian's idea... I suppose that he is right, it would turn me mad to do the accounting over who gets how many tech points in which technologies. Remember that tech trading can't happen until you get Alphabet (should I change it to Writing, instead?).

Immaculate's idea for a big trade alliance between the mediterranean powers could cost quite a bit... I'd say that it would be about 6 EC per nation, and perhaps would rise the top on 1. BUT remember, if two nations in the trade alliance go to war, the alliance will go to the dustbin, and you will have to start from scratch, no matter who goes in war. Just a reminder that, if you believe someone else in the possible alliance will start a war, you'd better not start anything.

May peace exist between our nations into perpetuity!

We acknowledge your concern about our colonies along the Black Sea coastline. We are a sea people by nature, and our people have always used the sea lanes to explore and colonize new lands.

We will, however, cease to explore those shores, if you do agree to acknowledge our sovereignty in all lands we currently control.

We also find this 'trade alliance' concept beneficial, but we are also willing to raise the stakes - will you also agree to an agreement between our nations that confirms that our interests in this world are mutual, and that our peoples are both cousins and allies?

I'm not sure any writing or alphabet would be required for tech sharing, imo. It's just something that games like to throw in there to make those techs worth a damn. So long as you can speak another person's language, you can teach that person how to do something.

We too have interests in the red sea. If you withdraw your forces from turkey and cede this land to us, we would be willing to agree to an accomodation involving this land that would see its western coast (africa) recognized as yours and the nothern 1/3 of the eastern coast recognized as yours as well. You would have to agree to allow us to lay claim to the rest of the arabian peninsula and asia while you would claim the rest of mainland africa.

Would this 'agreement' mean that our military would have to support each other's mutual interests? (ooc- ie: if you are attacked we are required to come to your assistance and vice-versa)? or did you have something else in mind?
