The Birth of Something New
Having finally finished treating the Horse Lords to all the courtesies she could bear, Rodima of Common House Yrauos waddled back to her stifling chambers in the squat keep of Conrond Mor as gracefully as she could. Once inside she immediately shut the door and awkwardly shrugged out of the clothes she had received as a gift from a Hippus noblewoman who had recently given birth in favour of the gauzy garments of her home. Though they failed pitifully to cover her bulging stomach, she would suffer any indecency to combat this sweltering heat which even made the brown-grey stone walls sweat. The year she spent with the Hippus Horse Lords, which would normally be the blink of an eye to any being so long lived as a Mist Elf, turned into an eternity due to this near-demonic heat.
She longed for the constant cool breezes of her homeland, for the faint smells of pine rather than horse manure- even her mother’s long, scowling face became a fond memory. So when she descended from the high of her memories and noticed a letter addressed to her ‘Penned by the Hand of Her Royal Highness,’ Rodima made a rather unbecoming squeak of happiness, rushed to her desk, and opened the letter with the practised haste of an elf.
She read it once, paused and frowned, then read it once more- this time aloud to make sure she read it correctly.
“It is only with the delight of a sister and the relief of a mother that I receive the news that you, Rodima of the Sea-Side Village of Yrauos, and your brothers of the Misty Maiden have reached across the Narrow Sea safely to make contact with the other peoples of this world. With the pride of a Master whose apprentice has wrought well I tell you that your continued efforts not only better your own prestige, but that of your entire nation across the sea, but I must remind you, as the Know’ed Huntress does her daughter, to be ever wary and always aware of your surroundings. You do not reside in your home.
Still as a child who has done well you must be rewarded and so I impart to you the permanent duties as Royal Ambassador to the Hippus Nation so that you may continue to diligently serve your loving queen and your equally loving nation.
Isil Carensir,
Queen of the White & Lady of Lessien Luacuteinwë, the Eternal House of Stars”
Royal... ambassador? Rodima stood still for some time and even then she could not quite grasp the unwanted reality of her situation. She had left her home under the pretence of being the face of an exploration party, and was sure that once contact had been made a proper Noble of the Higher Houses would be sent to treat with the foreigners.
Her mind was a frenzy of thoughts and it took Rodima a few minutes to realise how afraid she was. It took her even longer to realise that she had wet herself out of fear. And still yet longer to realise that it was not urine which pooled at her feet.
