Role Play Challenge: DeGaulle's League

MaD I think you are gonna Stomp all over this one. I hope the map is agreeable and you get to spawn off at least 10 colonies.

Is The great Lighthouse a priority?

Let's see: Industrious leader , Archeopolego, Lot's of Colonies to force trade routes on, choppable forrests in the BFC. I dunno, ya think! ;)

What you should to is play Vicky and WB in 6 Shakas.

OMG--you absolutely HAVE to do that for a subsequent RPC. It's like the Washington game, but in reverse. Maybe put in Hatty and another female AI for competition.

Wow, this has been great fun, even though I was waaaay behind on just about everything compared to a normal game.

I originally started heading for the AP (and was quite close to achieving that win) since I head my mind set on a diplomatic victory, then I rechecked and saw it was only UN so I had to change my plans.

Still it seems no one really hated me this game, thanks mostly to early free religion. Combined with the fact that the leader with most votes was hated by a lot of people since he/she stuck with a religion almost no one was using (aside from my colonies), UN victory came very easily.

These kinda relations are very fun and very unusual at least for me:

DeGaulle's League: PArt I

To start this RPC we settled in place taking advantage of the fresh water and the abundant food.

DegA0000.jpg

We sent our warrior west while we started the build order Warrior/workboat/workboat/worker/warrior/warrior/warrior/settler/lighthouse/GLH

Techpath went: Fishing/mining/BW/sailing/Masonry/IW

We sent our warrior north to find our only goody hut

DegA0001.jpg

Stupid Warriors. Can't you see the French want to liberate you after we settle your lands!

So after Bronze Working

DegA0000-1.jpg

Nothing!

However we met the first AI

DegA0001-1.jpg

Good, no war-Monger and a fairly large Pansie, er I mean potential valuable Colony, no no I mean a great friend!

We dropped city #2 in the best location

DegA0002.jpg

And while we were researching Iron Working to get a decent Military AND chop away at those jungles, we managed to build

DegA0003.jpg

Good we shall need it to combat two very strong Financial leaders. Did I say TWO?

DegA0004.jpg

Why, yes I did!

But the Million Franc question, do we have Iron???

DegA0005.jpg

Well, there is alot of land to explore still as well as nearby islands. Depending what the north brings I forsee some islands as being part of our "French Core" of cities.

SO I think we should build some Galleys to explore and defend our clams. As far as the next techs???

Mysticism/Hunting/Archery. We have delayed defense way too long.

I think you should explore!!!! Seriously, you have the GLH built, IW, and even met several leaders but still can't even see past that strip of land!!! AHHH!

Screw archery. You can practically fogbust with galleys on this map. You only need about 4 warriors to completely fogbust the land you have now.

But yes, definitely, build some galleys, or even workboats, to explore the areas. With the GLH on a map like this, expand overseas and it'll all pay for itself.

What a crappy land so far. No strategic resources. Scratch that. No resources whatsoever. Jungle all over the place. Pfff, this is going to be an interesting game.

i don't see why you didn't place orleans 1e ... true ... it would lose +2 health from fresh water, but it would also leave room for another decent city 1nw of the desert

@Sian:

I agree. Mad, it seems to me that if you're going for a base core of cities on one landmass, you need to plan for more, less-optimal cities.

@ SIan/Almighty. Actually City #2 is a production behemouth. 5 hills, wheat, and enough river to irigate all those grasslands. Add the Moari and watchout. Planting the city 1 E get's me 2 weaker cities rather than one stronge one. Also, the region to the west of City #2 is alikely a late fillin and not ont I plan right away.

There is also another river to the north which I believe is similar. Fresh wat for eventually irigated farms plus seafood and 2-3 hills for production.

Mad, can you update your opening post with links to the different rounds? I have found this is very handy for determining if you posted a new round, and then finding it! Thanks!

DeGaulle's League: PArt II

A very ANNOYING early part of the segment here which seams to have worked out pretty well.

Let's take a look at what our Noble French Friend is up to.

Let's start with the techpath: Hunting/Archery/Mysticism/AH/writing/Pottery/HBR/Compass.

Unusual later techs but they make the most sense in this game. Also I think archery was prudent as Victoria is a noted backstabber even if she rarely declares war.

We then built a Galley to scope out the lands. It got killed. We sent a warrior north. He got Killed. Our seafood got Pillaged.

Then DeGaulle got mad and built some more Galleys, and explored the north

DegB0000.jpg

The good news is we have horses.

DegB0001.jpg

Bad news is where is the damned metals!!!!!!!!!!! Well, at least there is no Shaka, YET!

Finally after cruising that Snakey continent we find

DegB0002.jpg

An off-shore iron source, and in a not so bad location.

So we send our archer/Settler/Galley to get some iron and see this interesting map.

DegB0003.jpg

Note the Blue color there (it aint French).

Next turn

DegB0004.jpg

Yes that is Indian Lands that is blue. However, after settling our iron city (again on a river.

DegB0005.jpg

So there are ruins on that hill as well as an Indian archer. Anyone know exactly what happened here???

So we move along and meet another leader

DegB0006.jpg

So Victoria/Asoka/Darius/Zara. A hefty assortment of tech-mongers.

So know Asoka is nearby to the east, we plant another city, not exactly optimum right now

DegB0007.jpg

But some irrigated farms and we are OK. Have I talked alot about Farms??? Yes, I think we are completely avoiding cottages this RPC.

Se start exploring English lands to the west and get Judaism spread to us.

DegB0009.jpg

we adopt it forming a block with Asoka/Victoria/Darius with Zara on the outside.

We dropped another city on the second landmass, claiming 2 seafood and cows. Decent production with some workshops.

Our first GP was a Great Merchant which we shipped off to London for a 3300 gold mission.

DegB0011.jpg

By the Way, Victoria got the circumnavigation bonus in 1660 BC !

So we ramp the slider up the 100% and start dealing

DegB0012.jpg

Next city was a solo land mass which got us more seafood (Sid, are you listening!)

DegB0013.jpg

Finally, we settle our last city, along the jungle river

DegB0014.jpg

I can sense Victoria ready to expand in that direction.

A view of our cities

DegB0016.jpg

Now that is 8 cities and at least 2-4 more areas to fill in. The question is do we expand northeastern on our second landmass

DegB0015.jpg

Or mix those newer cities into a tight, compact landmass allowing the rest of that continent to be settled. My guess at the moment is to settle it since resources like oil, uranium, coal could be there.

We made one large trade

DegB0017.jpg

Before finishing

DegB0018.jpg

Early harbors with the Great Lighthouse is pretty darned powerful.

The question is what do we tech next??? Currency, Code of Laws, Aesthetics.

AND, do we monopolize Compass or trade it off

DegB0020.jpg

SO a struggle at first, but things looking up. A monopoly on Compass, almost finished the Maori in the production city, and close to getting iron hooked.

The biggest question is do we start mobilizing, or let diplomacy rule for a while. I shoudl remind everyone that trade route yields are much higher during peace than war.

Getting Diarus or whatever to give up currency will boast your GL even more! If it takes compass: then do it.

But if he doesn't go for it keep it a monopoly, they will slaver over that Compass they will! Great Job!

Why didn't you settle Chatres 1NW? Then you could settle a city on that desert tile and have 2 ok cities on that island. With GLH, those trade routes would be quite nice! ( although i admit, there would be NO production. Buy hey, its a whipping city then!)

Ya, for the second time I disagree with one of your city placements Mad! :P That fish will be WASTED! WASTED!

Well mad, I have to agree with the others. A city on the desert tile would have netted you in 2 fish and a clam. Then the other city 1N and would have made a good city too. The 2fish/clam city would have been a prime candidate then for Maoi statues, but Orleans already gets that. Still the game is shaping up. Can we get a shot of the big island you are colonizing with resource flags on? I would have put Tours 1E of the plains hill, then a city to grab the rice and the cow. Iron city more to the NE to get the clam and the iron. Those would have been stronger cities imho, but then again you are a way better player then I am. Keep it up.

Alot of displeasure over That island city!

My thinking is that with 2 coastal seafood there is alot of food to support the two mines and some workshops. In a sense 1 VERY efficient city rather than 2 average cities. Remember I am self limiting the French Core to 8-12 cities.

Yeah, settling 2 cities on the small island neither would be great. Mad will get enough islands and colonies that trade routes will be lucrative enough as-is.

But really, you should be getting on that. I'm still waiting for your colony of Shaka to pop out so you can rule over him with an Iron Fist.

I am at a decision point here and want some advice before I proceed. I played out the game up to 850 AD one certain way which has gotten us hopelessly backwards in tech (if you recall my past games you know when I say hopeless I mean it). Basically I Monopolized Compass while the world went trade nuts. I do have an outdated armada ready to attack Victoria.

I am considering replaying this segment by spreading arround Compass ASAP.

I am looking for what everyone wants to see. All RPC rules are still in effect. Do we want a sporting chance and replay the segment, or simply post what I have and the hell with it.
