NotW XXVI: Children of Kylorin (Game Thread)

Werewolves? I only heard them in tales from other villages and castles where they were attacked by them. But why would they come here of all places?

*The elder slowly walks away and starts to doze in a chair*

Agghhh grunts the orc.*

Well... we should get prepared for another threat and attack as soon as possible. Hey Catharsis, smith us some swords will ya?

Who called me Stumpy? The miner spins around and is confronted by a pair of long slender legs that only one race could possess “oh aye…” His gaze goes a little higher and he suddenly is aware that the legs are attached to a hunter. He has heard stories about hunters and quickly pulls his mind from the gutter. “I would certainly be glad of some company in these dark times especially from someone with your skills and beauty.” Who knows where a few drinks might lead the miner thinks to himself, but realises the chances of the hunter needing some manly protection will be rather slim.

Get me some dwarven brew, will ya? Let's see if it stacks up to our human brew?

OOC: Goddammit, I didn't get the whore. Well, at least I'm a whore in one Forum Game.

When the fist shock had faded the Shaman returned to his tent.

He settled down in front of his ceremonial totems and went into deep meditation sending his mind out to call his ancestors.

After half an hour he returned to the real world having apparently received an answer. He slowly rose to his feet, gripping his rattles and stepped towards the fireplace. Circling the flames he started howling and dancing, trying to ward the evil spirits who had apparently infested this village.

The Golem stands watching everything happen. Though to the towns people is might as well have been a statue in town square.
Wandering so long had taken it here, and maybe slaying this Killer of the Little Ones is it's purpose...

"where this beast comes from, and how the heck this "everything but peace" conference will go?" such were the thoughts of the (crippled) old man sit near the center of the village. Days spent watching ladies of the country and healing his remaining hand were over apparently...

The woman gave a wry smile, and laughed heartily. "Oh, can't be that bad," she remarked, wrapping her arms around z4ackdabeast, and putting her head cooly on his shoulder. "If you wanted a night you'd never forget, soldier, marked by some short action and then your incapacitated, naked form, you should have yelled sooner.."

An unmistakable whiff of hair pomade and horse liniment precedes the Champion into the village square. The Champion's trim, muscular body is oiled and polished to a spit shine. He wears a light cotton shirt, worn nearly translucent through long use, just so you can tell, and his trousers are cut off at the knees. Around his neck he wears a shiny gold medal, and he's happy to talk about it to anyone who asks. He loves new people in town! They're the only ones who don't know enough to sneak away at his approach. Right now he approaches the pair of traveling merchants.

So you're Love, right? And you're Pinman? And you've heard about this werewolf business? Terrible thing that, just terrible. Brrr! Gives you the shivers, doesn't it?

He shivers theatrically. The sun glints off his medal.

Oh, this? I won this at the all-Amurite races. Strictly no magic allowed, you understand! Just sheer muscle power and grit. I won the five mile race -- record time! I was neck and neck with this big Malakim guy the whole way, shouldn't even have been allowed in the races -- he's no Amurite! -- but what can I do about it? Then I blew past him on the last hill, it was like he was running in quicksand! Poor guy, but you can't argue with the will of the gods, right? Did I tell you we have a town carnival coming up in a few weeks, to coincide with the big peace conference? I'm entered in everything, naturally. Going for my tenth straight sweep of all the contests, isn't that great? You can come and watch -- I'll give you little signs with my name on them that you can wave to show your support. Everyone will have one! If you wait here just a minute, I'll go get a couple -- tell me if you like the red, or the blue!

The Champion hurries off, leaving the merchants drifting like dried leaves in his wake.

Sliding off of the embarrassed soldier, the whore slithers over to the champion, dirty blond bangs falling over suddenly vulnerable blue eyes. An unmistakably oversized cotton dress keeps her barely covered, and she approaches with her hands behind her back, innocent.

"Oh, Champion, what are we doing do to about this werewolf? You'll save us, won't you?" she whispered, nearly on the verge of "tears".

The Champion, returning with his arms full of red- and blue-lettered signs, eyes the whore with some trepidation. Much as he loves to boast, he has the distinct feeling that any such errant claims would be put to the test rather sooner than later. Eventually, he seems to decide that the best course of action would be to pretend she hadn't said anything --- and while he was at it, also to pretend that her dress was up to the usual standards of propriety.

Red or blue, miss? Best to be prepared. There's a carnival coming up, you know.

The orphan runs over to the farmer's daughter

"Want to play conkers?"

The priest is dressed in a long, white robe signifying his high rank in the Church, the bottom of which trails along the ground behind him where it has become dirt-stained and tattered. On his head he wears a gold, stylised crown of thorns, and in his hand he carries a wooden staff covered in gold leaf. Engraved in both is the symbol of the sword and shield, the holy symbols of Junil.

He walks slowly through the village between his house and the Chapel in an almost dream-like way, deep in prayer, head bowed. As he walks he does not make eye contact with the people he passes, largely because his eyes are firmly shut - after all, when angels guide your way, who needs to see where they're going?

He arrives at the Chapel door, raises his arms and motions towards them, a keen-eyed on-looker might notice a subtle smirk flash momentarily across his face as the doors creak open heavilly. He enters in silence and the doors slam shut.

From within the sound of fervent prayer can be heard.

The first day passed in relative quiet. The shock of the mayor’s murder seemed to have little effect on some who introduced themselves to the newcomers in the town. Some few lamented the death of their leader, but the vast majority asked one question—“What about me?”

The village went to bed, each person hoping the killings were over, but each fearing otherwise.

Day One

The villagers awoke in the middle of the night to the smell of smoke and sulfur. They massed together in the village center, gazing towards the not so distant forest fire. It soon became clear though that it wasn’t threatening them directly although the smoke made it quite hard to see, and they turned back to their huts for bed.

After a fitful sleep, dreading what they would find, they gathered in the village square. Or not find as the case may be

As they gathered, it quickly became clear that one of their number were missing. With awful certainty, they made their way to the home of the farseer, ZPV.

His hut was average by village standards, not exceedingly large but not tiny. The door stood slightly ajar. Cautiously, the shaman Kulko opened the door and peered inside. The inside was largely intact at first glance, but closer inspection revealed that the door to the kitchen was standing open and several pots and pans littered the floor. Already knowing what he would find, the shaman (everyone else had turned back by that point, not desiring to see the body of their fallen comrade) looked inside and saw the body of ZPV with a gaping slash across his throat.

A quick search of his apartment revealed a letter, confirming to Kulko the surprising fact that
Spoiler :

ZPV was a wizard infiltrator
Troubled, he turned to leave. It would be the last thing he would ever do.

At that instant, a giant beast pounced. The shaman had no chance—he was dead in an instant. The beast took his prey and ran off into the smoldering forest. It was clear to everybody they had just seen a werewolf.

Spoiler :
The shaman was innocent!

Troubled, they began their day. The Travelling Merchants opened for business. It was generally agreed that since neither had any family left, both murdered individuals life savings would be voted on that day.

The Champion sidles out into the village square as if he's hoping no one will notice him, and he delivers his entire speech while facing a convenient wall, on the theory that that way, maybe no one will hear him.

Um. Yes, well. Before he died, the Shaman did say he had an eensy weensy suspicion of someone, and to make a note of it if he was killed. Which he was. HE DIDN'T TELL ME WHY HE WAS SUSPICIOUS, I just want to make that clear. Ahem. So. I said I would make a note of it, and I do try to keep my word, even though I wasn't expecting to have to, you know, so, um, Ekolite the Priest, you wouldn't happen to have wolfish tendencies, would you?

Duty done, the Champion sidles right on back to his hut, only poking his head out once more after a few seconds to request the gold. (Renata)
